John Peel Sessions
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's often been bemoaned that the Birthday Party, Nick Cave's postpunk outfit, never managed to capture on record the confrontational frenzy of their live performances. These four sessions, recorded for the John Peel radio show between September 1980 and November 1982, arguably form the most accurate portrayal of the band ever released, as they were under severe time constraints on each occasion. The 16 tracks survey their finest work--"She's Hit," "Big Jesus Trash Can," "King Ink"--all with simple, portentous bass lines and Rowland Howard's vicious stabs of reverberating guitar. The juddering rockabilly of "Release the Bats" (which, much to Cave's disgust, became an anthem for Goths worldwide) is also featured, along with the seldom heard "Marry Me (Lie! Lie!)" and a churning cover of the Stooges' "Loose." As the tracks (and the years) pass, one can see Cave's progression toward writing somber murder ballads, such as "Deep in the Woods." And there is undeniable evidence that he was a tremendously funny man from the start: "Even my dog kicks me!" he howls during "Figure of Fun." --Dominic Wills

Album Description
Two CDs featuring the '90s coolest Britpop band's infamous Peel Sessions. The stamp of approval from John Peel was always the kitemark of a great band, and Gene repeatedly rose to the honor, recording four sessions during the mid-to-late '90s that wonderfully capture their blossoming career. Disc One features their in-studio sessions, the first, laid down in December 1995, featuring stark early versions of tracks from their sophomore album Drawn To The Deep End. The second, in February 1998, previewed songs from their third album, Revelations. Disc Two's sessions were recorded during live shows. The first at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in January 1999, the second in August of the same year, in the Maida Vale studios on John Peel's birthday, Both sets are awash with the rough passion and tender compassion that infused Gene's entire canon; fitting testaments all to the 90's most elegant lost sons. Universal. 2006.

Customer Reviews:
AWESOME.......2003-06-21
I am a JAMC fan and think this album is absolutely great. I believe it clearly captures the magic of the band. And the capital of Nebraska is Lincoln.
Reasonably exciting live tracks, absolutely no surprises.......2001-09-21
All of these 21 live tunes are unreleased. However, the actual songs were released on the 'Psychocandy' and 'Darklands' CDs. If you're looking for new songs, you'll find mostly covers here. (The JAMC were never good at acoustic covers, so even kangaroos can guess what 'My Girl' sounds like). Most of the tunes have the same straight-to-tape sound of the original CDs, except sloppier. Some intense tracks really do terrify (In a Hole, Taste The Floor, Some Candy Talking), I found the rest to be nothing we haven't heard already. OK, but hardly great.
Brings ya back.......2000-04-27
A good reminder for all who've forgotten what a genius band the JAMC was. The first several track are very early, pre-Psychocandy noise hysteria, but the real revelation is hearing stripped-down acoustic versions of the songs on that album. They're almost more wonderful without all the feedback--pristine, melodic songs whose delicate music runs against their nihilistic lyrics. Things get a bit lame later in the disc with some of the JAMC's less distinguished later tracks, but the acoustic version of "My Girl" is killer.

Customer Reviews:
'IMPOSSIBLE-TO-PERFORM' MUSIC...LIVE..........2004-03-31
This Heat were a pretty amazing band - utilizing `standard' instruments such as electric guitar, bass, vocals, percussion and keyboards, along with less-common ones like found percussion and tape recorders, they fused political and social consciousness with musical adventurism and created something that was energetic, stimulating, on-the-edge and ... (gasp!) ... listenable. Their studio albums - the 1980 self-titled debut (a.k.a. `Blue and yellow'), and the crucial, shattering follow-up, DECEIT, released in 1981 - blew the listener away. It was amazing to hear what they had achieved by deconstructing and reassembling what most people considered to be `rock music'. I heard several people comment to the effect that `Well...that's interesting, but they could never perform that stuff in a live context without lots of additional people to help.' - which brings us to this document.
MADE AVAILABLE was recorded live - Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward and Gareth Williams performing alone - in BBC's Maida Vale Studios in London. Three of the tracks were recorded in April of 1977, five in October of the same year. The trio utilized their usual array of instruments and effects - they were pioneers in the live use of tape loops, using both prerecorded material and sounds looped as they were generated live on stage. The effects are breathtaking in their imagination, power and (despite what some people might feel about music such as this) emotion. From the first album are offered live versions of `Horizontal hold', `Not waving', and `The fall of Saigon'; `Makeshift Swahili' from DECEIT appears here as simply `Makeshift'; we are also treated to four tracks illustrating the band's ability to create music on the spot: `Rimp romp ramp', `Sitting', `Basement boy' and `Slither'.
They set us on our ear with each new release - and set us to thinking as well. This music is every bit as powerful, vital and relevant today as it was when it was recorded - a lot of people have learned (the less-kind might call it `stolen') from their pioneering work, but I have yet to hear it equaled. Most of their recordings are now out-of-print. If you're musically adventurous and appreciate sounds that will stretch your mind, and you run across any of their work, I would suggest picking it up while you can. THIS HEAT and DECEIT will hopefully be reissued - it's a crime that they're not more readily available - and MADE AVAILABLE is an important piece to their puzzle.

A solid compilation.......2001-04-26
Following in the footsteps of THIS IS CINERAMA, this compilation of radio sessions and live performances may not be a good introduction to Gedge & Co. but makes for a nice alternative listening experience to the studio albums. The first session is a tad shaky, but things get better rapidly; "146 Degrees" and the amazing "Reel 2, Dialogue 2" (their most underrated B-side) are highlights, as is their lively cover of the Turtles' "Elenore." Audio quality is very good.
melodramatic!.......2001-04-18
Drama queen David Gedge of The Wedding Present sings songs about love and broken relationships in his British accent. Most songs use some combination of male and female vocals, piano, organ, flute, and sometimes strings. The album did not speak to me, although most songs are catchy. The acoustic version of "Pacific" is nice, but the one of "Dance, Girl, Dance" is just BAD. The lyrics tend to be on the melodramatic side so it gets old real fast.
