Do Bother At All.......2006-02-08
Koufax is a great band, and to get a free downloaded song of this caliber is a steal. It is much more upbeat then what I have heard of them in earlier albums, but it is a great song. Give it a listen.
Brilliant.......2006-01-16
As of yet I have only heard "Why bother at all" and my initial reaction was "wow, I didn't expect that." It's a very driven and passionate song. The use of the piano is a bonus (there are some bands that use piano or keyboards, but rarely utilize them in a "good" way, one band that is an exception to this is "the Arcade Fire" which if you like the "Why bother at all" track, then you'll appreciate The Arcade Fire.
Anyhow, if the track I've listened to is a testament to the rest of an album, I suggest you snap this jem up soon.
Good album by a great band.......2006-01-05
To the reviewer Kevin Hess:
First of all, the Strokes' lead singer is Julian Casablancas, and Rob Suchan doesn't really sound like him. Suchan is more of an emotive, bombastic singer, while Casablancas is a more monotone, deadpan singer. They're both male and both musicians, but that's where the similarities end. Plus, the Strokes aren't exactly known for their piano work.
I also don't think they should be compared to a band like Keane. While Keane has been together slightly longer, Koufax has put out about four times as many full-length albums as Keane. While I don't particularly like their latest release as much as their previous albums, Koufax comes out swinging on every album -- on every track for that matter. They're experimental, innovative and retro without being a rip-off. While their New Wave influences are obvious and credited, they're doing really original stuff, (unlike bands like the Killers and the like, who are cashing in on writing formulaic singles that sound like music that ended up Depeche Mode's cutting room floor -- not that you compared them to the Killers; I'm just sayin's all ...) while retaining their trademark style. Furthermore, Koufax's lyrics are smart and engaging, involving social commentary and witty plays on words -- not just crappy drivel about failed relationships.
Finally, it's slightly silly to compare a world-renown baseball player to a slighty obscure indie rock band. That's a little beyond apples and oranges -- sorta like comparing Spaghetti-Os and Oreos (though both of those kinda suck).
Anyway, regardless of whether you like Koufax (but if you don't you're a moron), they work their asses off and and they're rockin' the block for a good cause: music that doesn't suck.
How is this their debut?!?.......2005-09-07
Sooooo, the original reviewer is quite uninformed on this fine band. They have several previous releases, to include the brilliant "Social Life." While this new album doesn't hold up to that standard, it's still a very solid release.
While Koufax is driven by keyboards and a stellar rhythm section, don't confuse them with the watered-down New Order mimicry that is currently crowding the airwaves. These guys sound nothing like the Killers, or the Bravery, or any of those other hacks. They bring more rock than cheesy synth-pop.
The two dings against this album are quite simple:
1. It's no "Social Life"
2. The lyrics could have used a couple (okay, a handful) of rewrites

Amazon.com essential recording
One of the best bands of the 1980s and the first American band to be signed to the prestigious British record label 4AD, the Throwing Muses' 1986 self-titled debut and their follow-up EP, Chains Changed, were never released in the United States. Consequently, the Muses early influence on the burgeoning alternative-rock scene was felt in ripples rather than waves. Rereleased and repackaged by Rykodisc in 1998, In a Doghouse compiles the stunning glory and horror of Throwing Muses, Chains Changed, the group's self-released demo tape, Doghouse, and new recordings of five early songs by guiding muse Kristin Hersh. Furious, potent, and raw, these recordings showcase Hersh's unique musical vision filtered through a lens of motherhood and mania. In a Doghouse also features songwriting contributions from Hersh's half-sister, Tanya Donelly, who quit the Muses to join the Breeders and then formed her own band, Belly. Both songwriters utilized unsettling time signatures, anxious lyrics, and airtight performances from their band mates to create the sound of teenage girls bursting into womanhood. A must-have album for fans of Hole, Sleater-Kinney, and even Fiona Apple. --Shawn Stewart

Welcome home........2006-07-16
This rules. Throwing Muses back when they were truly unique and hungry. The later stuff is good (especially The Real Ramona), but to be honest, I think Kristin watered the sound of the band down a bit.
This early material is raw and sometimes vicious, yet insanely catchy. Get it.
follow me to a lean-to.......2006-01-28
When I first bought the self-titled Throwing Muses debut during my weekly escape to NYC from the suburbs, I had no idea what I was bringing home. For almost twenty years now (is that possible?) this record has set my internal metronome by its schizophrenic time signatures and impossible lyrics. This record taught me that poetry was worth paying attention to, that secrets were better shared, that it was possible to exorcise demons with a well-directed wail. Thank god for this record.
Holy crap this knocked my socks off.......2005-05-29
Until I heard this album, I didn't understand how anyone who didn't like the symphony could consider him/herself a "music snob". Now I understand. This stuff is about as good as you can get with electric guitars. Not shabby in the least.
Astoundingly original.......2004-04-15
The self-titled first Throwing Muses album contained on this disc is some of the most original, startling, and harrowing music made in the 80's, or for that matter, any decade in rock history. I was 16 when I bought this record and I loved it immediately. I am now 33 and my feelings for this album have only deepened. An incredible rock masterpiece that I won't even try to describe. Listen to it. If you hate it, thats okay. You just have lousy taste in music, thats all.
This is a Must Have and a great idea.......2003-09-28
this is the stuff right here. a great double disc. taking the muses debut and adding the follow up ep's was a great idea. but it just gets better as disc 2 adds some demos and other odds and ins. very well put together. i'm so glad 4ad did this. the music is of course amazing. a young hersh & donelly are very shape here. hersh is really in rare form here. it's great stuff all over the place. the b sides on disc 1. and demos on disc 2. are amazing stuff and right up there with the debut stuff. it's great that this stuff is out there and no longer rare and hard to find. i first got into the muses in a very unusual way. i saw them on Conan when university came out. man conan gets some good music guest doesn't he. i wish i had it on tape. anyway i think they played Shimmer. it was a great. and hersh really caught my eye. anyway this is really worth getting :)

Playing in my head.......2005-04-21
This groups' music is reminiscent of the 60s and has a rockin blues rhythm that just won't quit. Great songs, wonderful lead and backup singers, good instrumentation. If you play it more than 4 or 5 times, it will be playing in your head all day. The upbeat sounds are good anytime. It would be a treat to hear them play live!
Ultimate Roadtrip CD.......2003-11-17
Catdaddy Jones were great traveling companions on a recent long car trip... the songs were energizing, soulful and the CD moved effortlessly from one shade of blue to another. Especially nice covers of "I Call Your Name" and "Pretty Flamingo."
Got Blues?.......2003-10-31
These guys are the real deal! Energetic, sexy cuts. Great instrumentation and fabulous vocals. Never heard of them? You will soon. Get it!
Great CD!.......2003-09-29
Loved the bluesy, sexy, sassy music on this CD. Great vocals!
Wow- what a great CD!!.......2003-08-29
These guys are fabulous- in fact, they are my new favorite group. Can't wait to see them live! While I love all the tracks, my favorites are "Two Candles", "You Got the Box", and "Make a Wish". Great vocals, great guitar, great combo of blues and rock. A definite must have CD.

Traditional Country, Contemporary Feel.......2007-06-19
For the price I decided to try this one out and it was worthwhile. There is a good traditional feel here, solid musicianship, but there is a comfortable contemporary delivery. The singer conveys the songs well but he could be a little stronger. I think this album would benefit greatly from just having more instrumental features. Often the breaks don't quite meet expectations considering that they clearly have skill. Some of the songs are not real strong either but there are some catchy ones. This strikes me as a band that is close to something special but by this album I would say it is only a "good" effort. It can tend to wear thin at times, particularly with a singer that is not real powerful (though he is likable in his easy style). Worth having and probably will grow on you if you like nice two-steppin', honky tonk music blended with a more modern feel. You'll get your twangy fun for the money, a touch of Dwight Yoakam but with less punch (Dwight meets Jerry Jeff Walker).

Album Description
Singer/songwriter Jim Koeppel crosses the lines that divide rock, pop and folk on his debut CD, Johnny's in the Doghouse. Great songs, singing and guitar. This is a worthy debut.
Customer Reviews:
This is happy, but also memorable and interesting new music........1999-04-15
Jim Koeppel is a unique musician on the scene at last. He's a singer with a dreamy voice and a mastery of the guitar, in addition to being a highly creative song writer. His music says important stuff about lots of things like relationships and peace, but it's highly upbeat and makes people get up and dance. He's also a cute guy with great presence. We want more of his music.
Jim Koeppel RULES!!.......1999-02-05
I've been following this cat for years and if you're into great singing, great guitar playing and toe-tapping tunes, pick it up. Jim's rootsy songs are perfect for that evening in front of the fire with that special someone. And with Hey Mister, he proves he can rock out too. BUY IT NOW YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
