Great band, mediocre offering.......2005-04-04
The Cramps are one of the greatest bands of all time, but this manages to be a below-par offering from the godfathers of Psychobilly. There is nothing new offered on this album, and all the songs sound like rejects from the debut. In end, this is a fun listen the first time, but it isn't as memorable or affecting as the group's earlier works. You probably won't take it out of it's case more than once. However, it is 97% better than anything else on Epitaph.
Cramps - 'Big Beat From Badsville' (Epitaph).......2005-01-30
Looks like 'Big Beat...' is the Cramp's tenth album, for it's very similar to it's predecessor 'Flamejob'.I've always liked this band for several reasons. What the new/old fan gets here is timeless psychobilly from a punk ensemble that first showed it's ugly face during the new wave music era, being the late '70's.One thing about the Cramps is,they change very little.Which in this case is a good thing.Tunes here I liked best were the in-your-face opener "Cramp Stomp","Sheena's In A Goth Gang","Queen Of Pain","Super Goo" and "Wet Nightmare".The tracks here seem to refer to subjects like violence, leather straps, old horror flicks and rough sex,as usual.Couldn't speak for anyone else, but I have no complaints here.A very decent CD.
SIMPLY BAD!.......2000-01-22
The Cramps are one of my favorite bands but this CD is terrible. Just Lux and Ivy going through the motions. Very disappointing! Instead, I highly recommend that you check out Songs the Lord Taught Us (one of the best recordings ever--no bad songs on the original album), A Date with Elvis, Psychedelic Jungle/Gravest Hits, and Stay Sick in that order. Also see them live.
Scratch & Sniff Music At Its Finest!.......1999-11-08
Russ Meyer meets Dick Dale! Makes me want to round up cattle in a Cadilac
I got the BUG!.......1999-08-21
The BUG is back again! This is the best Cramps album since 1985's A Date With Elvis! Usually the Cramps put most of their best songs up front, so the album kinda runs out of gas. But this one comes back and pimp slaps you upside the head all over again! Loaded with great songs... I mean don't you want to know what Lux considers a "Wet Nightmare"? I only wish he'd come out with a lingerie line for men so I could look as sharp as him when I'm vacuuming the apartment. If you've felt somewhat let down by the last few, this one will reaffirm your faith in the almighty power of The Cramps, the funnest band on earth. Just put this one in your Discman and try walking normal.

The Cramps have done it again.......2006-06-13
The Cramps have crafted another sleazy masterpiece of the sounds their best at straight ahead scuzz 60's garage rock, mixed with asnine psychedelia, and sleazy down dirty southern Rockabilly. There is a smattering of B movie horror. The Cramps are a cheap band and proud of it. They stand out of the crowd prefectly. Most bands are mediocre copies of each other (Think of all the Blink 182 and Thrice copy bands I'd like to see lose their undeserved popularity sorry for the tirade) this CD proves they are above the masses. Some of the songs they perform are derivative of older songs the Cramps have heard. If you want the originals of most of the songs they draw inspriation from order "Songs the Cramps Taught Us" if you are a fan of the Cramps I can't suggest these CDs any stronger their perfect. You will not be disappointed all the songs on these CDs are the choicest cuts of raw garage, Rockabilly, and Surf. There is songs on these CD's I had a hard time finding. The out right filthy song by Carl Perkins "Her Love Rubbed Off" and the Rockabilly ode to speed pills that fueled early Rockabilly by Macy Skip Skipper "Bop Pills". I was sad to see that Amazon didn't carry these CDs but you can get these off of Crypt Records. That aside if your a begginner of Cramps get this CD or anything else they put out. If you like it get the rest then get the CDs mentioned above.
It's the Aztec Mummy vs Murderous Me..........2003-11-13
1997's "Big Beat from Badsville" is, in a way, the final chapter of The Cramps' long, twisted ride to fame. After this CD got released, fans had to wait 6 long years before "Fiends of Dope Island" was unleashed. Out of all the records the band made, "Big Beat" is probably the least successful. There are a couple of reasons why. First of all, most of the lyrics appear to be random phrases carelessly cut and glued together. The tracks' choruses and phrases aren't as well-crafted as those on 1994's "Flamejob." While once again delving into the Devil's basket of cheesy science fiction and sleazy sex, the band members were writing the songs in a hurry. It's almost as if The Cramps were rushed into the project. As a matter of fact, a couple of the latter tracks, such as "Burn She-Devil Burn" and "Haulass Hyena" sound like they were written in 5 minutes.
Not all the songs are like that, though. There are a couple of exceptional highlights. Both "God Monster" and "Wet Nightmare" are funny, warped trips into psychedelic B-movies, complete with monsters, aliens, and raining frogs! "Sheena's in a Goth Gang" cleverly describes a girl who descends into the vampire underground, bearing "a hole in her nose like the Sphinx at Giza." "Super Goo" is nonsense at its best! The lyrics can make one envision a commercial for either shampoo or novelty slime!
A second reason why "Big Beat" isn't the best album is because there's TOO much sexuality. The semi-provacative, semi-corny "Like a Bad Girl Should" starts off Lux's libido by picturing Poison Ivy in her bouffant hair, fishnets, and spike-heeled boots. "Queen of Pain" highlights Ivy as a hardcore dominatrix; the song's drum rhythm sashays like a pair of curved hips. Then, Lux once again presents his "bad girl" fantasy with "Devil Behind that Bush," a track where a woman's red lips and black mascara compliment her horns and tail. By the time listeners reach the CD's latter tracks, "Hypno Sex Ray" and "Burn She-Devil Burn," Lux's titillating imagination gets tiresome, and in the end, it wears out its welcome.
The album's content isn't all bad, however. The Cramps did indeed prove that their sound never gets old. Mixing punk attitudes with groovy, 1960's surf rhythms (and a little bit of Lux's Elvis impersonation) is a musical formula that no other band can imitate. The Cramps will live forever!
Growing up in style.......2003-01-22
A life-long cramps fan, I was a little over-excited by the purchase of this album, but wasn't disappointed, despite a weak opening. It doesn't really get going until "It thing hard on" - a classic Cramps track with all the ripsnorting ridiculousness that makes them so unique. My personal favourite from the existing album is "Devil behind that bush..." - a double-edged tale of she-devil woe with enough tongue-in-cheek to leave little room for teeth. Of the extra tracks, "No club lone wolf" stands out.
This is an easy album to listen to and a great start for the Cramps virgin. Yes, they've mellowed, yes, they're funnier than they used to be and no, there really is no-one else like them on the planet. Now how about an album featuring "Weekend On Mars", "Beat Out My Love", "Shombolar" and "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White"...
