In the bestselling DM canon, this is one of their very best--mature, Euro-elegant, smartly contemporary (thanks to producer Tim "Bomb the Bass" Simenon), honest ("Insight"), edgy ("Barrel of a Gun"), and armed with at least one killer single in "It's No Good." --Jeff Bateman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The 2007 entry in Armin Van Buuren's State of Trance series takes awhile to get going, but eventually kicks in with the blissful epics that have made him one of the world's most popular DJs. On mix records, Van Buuren usually expresses the two sides of his DJ personality via the two-disc format; disc one is filled with frothy vocal trance, the other is populated with more progressive material. SoT 2007 stays true to form. This time out though, there's an obvious disparity in quality between the two. Van Buuren goes downright cheesy for his lighter disc one (called "on the beach"), and with a few fleeting exceptions like Kalopsia's "The Blizzard," it's pretty forgettable. However, the second, more progressive disc ("in the club") improves noticeably as AVB leads off with two self-produced bombs "Miserere" and "Rush Hour." It still has a high cheese level to be sure, but its excesses are cut with relative dark matter like the lovely mashup in the middle of the disc, consisting primarily of Reh Mundi's "Perspective" and Ronski Speed's "The Space We Are." As with contemporaries like DJ Tiësto, Van Buuren seems to believe he needs to be all things to all people, but his more commercial instincts are too pronounced here, leaving his more devoted fan base with only half a mix to enjoy. --Matthew Cooke
Album Description
Van Buuren is one of the biggest names in dance music and the current #3 DJ in the world (as voted by a DJ Mag poll). He continually pushes the bar with fresh trance sounds. This is the next chapter in his annual mix album series; a two-disc continuous mix of this year's hottest trance tunes from a stellar lineup. Alongside Armin's superior mixing skills, "A State Of Trance" is an inspiring and uplifting aural experience.

Fantastic.......2007-07-25
I am somewhat newer to trance and am still getting accustomed to the lingo.
I read some of the other reviews before I listened to the album. I agree that disc one, "On the Beach", is much more of a mellow trance; and of course, the name of the disc implies this. Most of the tracks are excellent--I just have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this time of trance.
I absolutely loved the second disc, "In the Club". The tracks are out of this world! I was listening to it during my boring commute and was loving it. Track 12 flipped on, and all of a sudden, the whole album just seemed a hundred times better to me. Tracks 12 through 16 make up my personal favorite trance mix I've ever been exposed to out of all of my favorite DJ's--Tiesto, Buuren, PVD, and Micro. This made me feel 100% secure in giving the entire album five stars!
pretty nice!.......2007-07-22
Pretty good, especially the "in & out" tune...... for more stuff like this, I recommend a couple compilation series on iTunes..... "Euro Club Hits Vol. 1", "Euro Club Hits Vol. 2", "Vocal Trance Club Hits Vol. 1" and "Vocal Trance Club Hits Vol. 2"...... these are digital only so you've got to get them on iTunes or Napster or Rhapsody....
Not as good as the previous state's of trance.......2007-07-22
The '05 and '06's were much better than this record, which is pretty good, but not nearly as good as his previous work in this series.
Just buy it now!.......2007-07-20
I have been an ardent Armin fan for years. ASOT 2007....brilliant work. I saw Armin live a few weeks before I got this. The track "firefly" will always take me back to his performance. The crowd was chanting ARMIN ARMIN ARMIN as he had a huge beaming smile on his face. And I got his autograph. So I am in love with him for sure!
On a serious note, I have listened to this set a zillion times. You will want to also if you buy this. Love it.
Armin at his best!!.......2007-07-20
I feel compelled to add this paragraph to my original review, for we have a troll (who obviously hates Armin Van Buuren) going through these reviews and saying that they are not helpful. You will notice that 8 negative votes were given to many of the reviews. Do not for one minute pay any attention to those negative votes (I believe one person is casting these votes), for "A State of Trance 2007" is everything the positive reviewers are saying it is.
I wholeheartedly agree with the majority of my fellow-reviewers who stated that this is Armin's best release yet. "A State of Trance 2006" was also very good, but Armin outdid himself this time.
I won't repeat the comments of former reviews, but I would add that I was surprised that no one referred (when pointing out their favorite tracks) to the amazing club hit "I Am" by Markus Schulz vs. Chakaa. I found it to be absolutely phenomenal and IMHO that track, not "Evergreen," marks the transition between the first and second half of CD2.
There was one track on CD1 that I didn't care for ("Wouldn't Change a Thing"); the vocals just didn't appeal to me. And on CD2 I considered tracks 6 & 7 ("Perspective" & "The Space We Are") to be fillers. Am I complaining? Far from it, for the other 25 tracks were sweet to the ear and will bring any trance fan (especially those who love vocal, melodic, and high energy trance) to a state of audio nirvana.
I believe this is, by far, the best 2 CD set released this year. But I have ordered the much-anticipated "Nightmusic, Vol. 2" by Thrillseekers, and if that release equals or surpasses Nightmusic, Vol. 1, it will give Armin some tough competition.

Tiësto sticks to his guns on a new album of original compositions that follows 2004's Just Be. Elements of Life strikes a satisfying balance between inventive vocal tracks and signature trance stormers: "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Driving to Heaven," and "Bright Morning Star" all glow with the Dutchman's epic sound, one that is simultaneously haunting and uplifting. On the vocal side, the soaring energy of "Break My Fall," which features BT on vocals, will not disappoint fans of the duo's prior work on "Just Be" and other collaborations. To be sure, there are a number of less convincing pieces as well: "Dance4Life" with Faithless's Maxi Jazz falls flat, and the lyrics of "Can You Feel Me" prove that the genre's reputation for banal wordsmithing is not entirely undeserved. For the most part, however, these weaker moments are outweighed by the stronger tracks. Principal among these is undoubtedly "Sweet Things"--in which Charlotte Martin's vocal high-wire act is complemented by some exceptional programming--a track that is sure to receive a great many spins by DJs around the globe and yet further proof that when it comes to bringing alive the female voice for the dancefloor, Tiësto remains without equal. All in all, it's a safe bet that many of Tiësto's Elements will be making their way into DJ crates and MP3 players alike. --Brent Kallmer
Album Description
Tiësto is undeniably one of the greatest DJ talents of this era. Internationally recognized as the world's premier DJ and producer, Tiësto continually takes electronic music to the next level - pushing boundaries with his addictive and creative trance creations. With his prior album releases enjoying outstanding success in the States, the time has come for his next installment: ELEMENTS OF LIFE. This record includes brilliant collaborations from the likes of BT, Maxi Jazz (Faithless) and other incredible female vocalists; a stunning collection of uplifting trance ensues. Supporting this release with performances at Coachella, WMC and an extensive national tour through Summer 07, Elements of Life will be THE electronic album of 2007.

old tiesto.......2007-07-18
I am kinda disappointed in this cd I like the old tiesto way better than this stuff. Hopefully his next cd rocks.
Tiësto is Tiësto.......2007-07-11
After Just Be, I didn't have too high expectations of this album, even though I did like Just Be. This album doesn't have slow tracks, the vocal performances are just great. All songs fit his style and a couple of them may remind you his first hits.
Music to Write Code By.......2007-07-05
Another good addition to a long playlist of trance electronica I listen to while writing code. Thanks, D.J. Tiesto!
Simply Great.......2007-07-05
One of the best Tiesto CD's I've had the pleasure of owning. It has been playing on repeat for a week now and I haven't gotten tired of it. "Sweet Things" is one of my favs on it. The teme from Pirates of the Caribean is awesome too.
Dissapointing coming from Tiesto........2007-07-04
I expected better of Tiesto, but his decline continues with Elements of Life. Some of the tracks (like Sweet Things) were just bad. Terrible vocals, poor sounding in general. Let PVD and AVB take over; they deserve to. They continue to produce quality stuff. Tiesto has just finally began to choke on his ego, and it will be the eventual complete demise of him. Tiesto is more concerned about spreading his name, and doesn't spend enough time in the studio. He has basically forgotten about the music that has famed him. AVB does a weekly radio show and keeps on top of everything Trance. Tiesto keeps on top of himself, and nothing more.

The boys at Anjunabeats--who in their collective DJ persona go by Above & Beyond--have probably done more than any other outfit to reinvigorate the genre of trance in the last five years. This is largely thanks to their mix compilations, which have featured talents like Gabriel & Dresden, Kyau & Albert, and Smith & Pledger. So it's a bit difficult to explain how these tastemakers could see fit to include a track peppered with a geek-speak warning that laptop overheating results in decreased battery life (Chunk & Twist's "Battery Life"). But such oddness is soon forgotten with the entrance of "Essence," a predictably excellent effort from Jaytech with plenty of swing. Disc 1 also features Joonas Hahmo's "Together," an effervescent fusion of house and trance elements that works like a charm. Disc 2 leaves the gate with Maor Levi's "Shapes"--whose splice-and-dice vocals nod to James Holden's seminal remix of "Nothing"--followed by Marc Marberg and Kyau & Albert's "Megashira," a must-spin track that is electro on the outside and trance on the inside (and features an absolutely stellar breakdown). Volume 5 is the most electro-influenced installment of Anjunabeats yet, but Above & Beyond are careful to use the harder-edged stuff as a springboard to give their trademark euphoric material even greater effect. --Brent Kallmer

Great CD.......2007-07-24
A Friend recommended it, they make great music, can't wait to see them live, i was impressed with the music!!!
Above & Beyond Is Amazing.......2007-07-24
Simply put these CD's are great. I haven't stopped listening to them since I got it.
Excellent Job.......2007-07-20
This is the first Anjunabeats album I have owned and within a few minutes of popping it in, I knew I had something special here. As far as trance goes, this album is everything you wanted to hear, perfect sounds and instrumentation. Just when things start cooling down a bit, they punch you square in the chest starting the next track. I saw Above and Beyond live at Electric Daisy Carnival 2007 and was able to glowstring through the entire set, eyes and mind wide open.
My only gripe is that it's two discs. I can't pick one.
Tracks worth mentioning? One Wish, Home, One Night In Tokyo, Needs To Feel, Formalistick... There are a lot of great tracks here. Have fun with this one!
Worth twice the price for CD2 alone!!.......2007-07-19
As is the case with many double CD sets, one CD eclipses the other. In this case CD2 was far superior to CD1. It's not that CD1 was bad, but CD2 was soooo good. Having said that, I did enjoy a few tracks on CD1; namely, "Together" (by Joonas Hahmo), "Tomahawk" (by Oliver Smith), "Amnesia" (by Nitrous Oxide), and the excellent closer "Good For Me" (by Above & Beyond).
CD2 is a classic! If you love melodic trance you will be treated to pure sonic bliss. There are absolutely no fillers here, though track 10 ("Cold Front" by Remo Con), a "techno progressive" number, was a bit jarring at first until the melody kicked in. I don't believe I would be guilty of hyperbole if I were to say that this is the best trance CD I've listened to in years (with the exception of my all-time favorite trance CD, CD2 of Thrillseekers' amazing 2 disc set "Nightmusic: Vol. 1." (If you love melodic and high energy trance, you simply must own that set...check out also the latest release by AVB, "A State of Trance 2007".)
The standouts include: "One night in Toyko" (by Purple Mood), "Make Me Believe" (by Daniel Kandi), "Home" (by Above & Beyond), "Oceanic" (by Above & Beyond), "Never Gone" (by Adam Nickey), "One Wish" (by Evbointh), and the stunning closer "Suru" (by Super8 & Tab). This is not to belittle the others, for they will prove to be ear candy for you as well. And I was impressed that Above & Beyond was able to take a rather old song ("Razorfish" by Tranquility Base) and give it new life in a refreshing remix.
There was only one drawback on the whole CD. When I heard the last note of "Suru" fading out, I was left longing for more. Oh well, thankfully one can always resort to the priceless Repeat button!!
WOW!!! Amazing album........2007-07-18
I recently bought some music to run to and this is one of my favorites. Keeps me moving and I love to hear it over and over again. Great work from Above & Beyond...you guys have me hooked.

His band Jane's Addiction helped grease the alternative-rock skids as the '80s hit the '90s, and Perry Farrell--pushing 50--now aims for a new decade and another century. The ethereal artist's revelry of contributors to his latest project includes one-named artists Flea and Fergie, Peter Hook (ex-New Order), and a creepy posthumous appearance by Jim Morrison. That's right: leave it to Farrell, creator of rock festival Lollapalooza and some of his genre's most impulsive music, to dust off the Lizard King, whose healthy vocal slinks and slides beneath the baiting, rhythmic lyric "Just try and stop us/We're going to love" (complete with a Ray Manzarek-like organ riff at the bridge). The novelty of "Woman in the Window" will undoubtedly generate the most attention. But Farrell's Satellite Party leaves plenty more on the table, channeling the punk-and-metal command of Jane ("Kinky," "Insanity Rains") with some of the pop sparkle of his Porno for Pyros ("Hard Life Easy," "The Solutionists"), while tossing in a couple of choice covers to boot: Rare Earth's "Just Wanna Celebrate" and the Bee Gees' "Lonely Days," recast as "Mr. Sunshine." --Scott Holter
Customer Reviews:
Great party album and amazing live band!.......2007-07-17
wow. I wasn't too exposed to Jane's addiction or Nuno's stuff...so my fairly unbias opinion is that this is a really good party album!
The tunes are mostly groovy and definitely grow on you. Admittedly, the thought of Jim Morrison's voice on a song sounded way weird to me, but I love that song! Ton's of other guests too.
SP is a great live act also! I am super excited to see them several times over the next three months as they are on tour with a band (that I probably like even more :-X) called MINK. Mink is another electric live band that really is great party music, but with a little more rock edge than SP. Two great bands touring for three months, do yourself a favor and see them (Mink's self titled debut comes out late August, don't miss out).
Five stars for satellite party's debut.
Don't think Jane's Addiction!.......2007-07-10
I'll start by saying I'm a huge Perry Farrell fan. I'm into his work with Jane's Addiction the most (I think the live, self-titled album is their greatest work). Satellite Party- Ultra Payloaded is definately upbeat and funky throughout- but I prefer the Perry Farrell that can be upbeat and funky as well as racy, deep and cutting edge. You don't get that side of his art in the lyrics on this album. "Wish Upon A Dog Star" is an obvious hit single attempt- all hooks, no substance. Perry is an incredibly talented writer and it saddens me to say his writing seems to have taken a step back on this album- the lyrics are under-developed and sing-song. Possibly some influence from Nuno (Extreme) may have caused the music on this album to be a lot "lighter" than what fans of Perry's music are really craving. There is some interesting guitar and bass work on the album, but nothing mind-blowing. The album is mediocre to good- better than that local band your sister raves about, not NEAR the calibur of Jane's Addiction or even Porno For Pyros. All that said, I have full faith that I will enjoy the material from this album a heck of a lot more when I see it performed live- Perry's just that great of a performer!
begining of something .......2007-06-20
i hope this marks the begining of a new avenue for perry ...this sound could provide a rich texture much like janes did for all of us years ago . this a good cd more like 3 1/2 stars but not a 3 . not a waste of money . good house party tracks on here as well as some good stuff to add to your playlist . i would recommend it , great summer music....not angry like janes was ...but that fit the time much like this does...
This is a fun album.....and Nuno plays on it!.......2007-06-14
Perry Farrell has created a fun album of funky tunes that make you want to dance. He's supported by a good group of musicians who help him bring the songs to life. Most notable of these musicians is one of the most awesome guitar players the world has ever known - Nuno Bettencourt! Nuno also helped with production duties, clearly helping to give the songs that funky groove he's well known for and adding a few great guitar riffs and solos here and there to spice things up. It's safe to say that this album is not groundbreaking in any way but it certainly offers you some good sounds and fun grooves to help liven up your next party. Favourite songs include the groovy "Wish Upon a Dogstar" and "Celebrate" which has a bit of an Extreme (Nuno's former band) influence to it and the nice mid-album ballad "Awesome". Play it loud and have some fun!
Party on a commercial space flight.......2007-06-13
What would a party be like on a commercial space flight? What would the music sound like? These are the questions Perry Farrell would like you to answer by listening to his Satellite Party. You know when you look at the night sky with all the constellations, and there's one star apart from the rest? That's where Perry claims the party is. Ultra Payloaded collectively contains elements as old as symphony and as modern as electronic programming.
Without Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) on guitar, the music wouldn't fit the name. Nuno's style is perfect for the Satellite Party name, bringing funky riffs and radiant solos to the space flight table. As expected, Perry Farrell's voice is still unique. Featured appearances on this album which bring a poppy and alternative flavor are John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Peter Hook (New Order), and Fergie (Black Eyed Peas). Nearing the end of the album, a nice surprise is "Woman In The Window," with spoken word never before released by the late Jim Morrison.
While Perry Farrell's Satellite Party won't make as big of a splash as Jane's Addiction has, it's more impressive than Porno for Pyros and certainly worth the listen for Farrell fans.

Excellent........2007-07-22
I love the CD, but the DVD comes only with the tour video, not the music video (it says it includes a video in the box).
Overall, a nice, smooth, energetic mix by my favorite DJ.
Blah.......2007-07-20
I was disappointed with this album. It is more techy and less melodic and trancey as Passport to the Netherlands and Right of Way. Plus I had already heard more interesting versions of the same tracks elsewhere before I got this. I have faith in Ferry and I think he'll surprise us with another great release in the future. Just not this release...
Ferry Corsten - Passport to the USA.......2007-06-28
Let me say that Ferry Corsten's newest release "Passport to the United States of America" is Good, but it just didn't really blow me away. I thought his Passport Netherlands was stronger.
Passport USA is solid but never really reaches epic trance status. It gets in the ballpark, but never really made me go "wow" for any extended period of time. Plus you're paying quite a bit of money for only one disc of music. I could do without the DVD if the album cost less.
There are TONS of other trance/ dance/ electronica discs out there. I would skip this and get Armin van Buuren's "A State of Trance 2007" instead.
One of Ferry's Best.......2007-06-25
Certainly a great mix. Although it's unfortunately only 1 disk, Ferry still delivers a well balanced collection of the recently popular electro-sounding progressive trance in addition to the high pumping synth lines that Corsten does best.

Killer.......2007-06-08
If you like anything resembling electronic music, you'll likely LOVE this! I have all his stuff...he's amazing, especially with a hi-fi system or earphones that really cover full frequency (flatly): 5-25K Hz.
Armin breaks loose in 2006.......2007-02-14
Armin van Buuren's style, from the countless mixes/broadcasts I have heard him put out, tends to waver with inconsistency. I think A State of Trance 2006 is where Armin finally hits his stride and is able to keep up with his own work.
Disc 1 (On The Beach) is a really great opening disc. Whether you find yourself rocking to and fro in a hammock or grooving enthusiastically in the sand & summer sun, this CD acts as a nice soundtrack. More atmospheric and spacey, Armin illustrates his grasp of the wheel when he proves himself able to incorporate some type of a pulse - sometimes surprisingly quick and hard - into this kind of "spaced" motif. In other words, On The Beach is not by any stretch of the imagination something ambient, and yet it is. The unobtrusive bpm simply propels the music, which takes the forefront, onward.
Disc 2 (At The Club) is where Armin has been known to shine; crazy, pulsating dance-floor-destroyer melodic trance comes pumping out of the speakers the minute the laser hits the disc. It doesn't become boring, and thankfully the vocals were really kept to a tolerable minimum in this mix. At The Club reminds me a lot of the frenetic, almost breakbeat melodic trance Armin dished out with his ASoT:2004, only this flows much better, linearly instead of jagged peaks and valleys. I loved ASoT:2004, but sometimes the lack of careful mixing or track placement makes it too hectic too enjoy - even on the dance floor, if you can believe that one.
I feel like Armin's been tinkering with stylistic techniques during the previous State of Trance mixes - 2004 & 2005. I loved both, but each went off in some undesirable direction at some point and never quite seemed able to return to base. Armin seems to have taken the warmer from 2004 and the cooler from 2005 and rightly combined them to produce 2006; highlighting his electronica capabilities with flying colors and putting forth a set in which BOTH discs are equally as desirable.
....No doubt this puts Armin back on the maps, even after releases like '76' temporarily took him off of my own. A great all-around CD to own, especially for Armin fans but also those of The Thrillseekers, Tiesto and Solarstone.

Excellent Trance Set !.......2007-02-08
The Trance style of music is something new to me.So,I took a chance on this CD set and I have to say it's exactly what I was looking for. Both CD's are EXCELLENT in my opinion.I liked it so well I bought AVB's CD set - 10 Years - which I also feel is an Excellent set.
Armin is simply the best.......2007-02-06
I won't go into a lot of detail here, but both of these disks are pretty amazing. The first one starts out somewhat slow, but then it builds into quite an energetic masterpiece. The second disk is pretty mind blowing throughout. I listened to the second disk first because the sub-title (In the club) drew my attention more. After listening to that disk about 25 times, I finally listened to the first disk, subtitled (At the beach) and to my surprise, after listening to it one or two times, I found myself liking it even more than the first. No way around it, if you like Trance, you have to buy this two disk set, it's as simple as that.
Good Service.......2007-01-24
Thanks, the response was prompt and adequate! appreciate the sincerity of the description.

fantastic.......2007-06-29
Simply the best trance album of 2006. Listening to the whole album, one can enjoy a definitive experience of "future sound of trance" . Hard to pick a favorite, but one thing is for sure : "Air for Life" will be a true trance classic.
Soft .......2007-06-02
I have heard these guys play before live there are off the chain . It was a little to soft for me But ok . I think they put way to many vocal songs on the cd but over all they did a good job . It was ok but not the best cd over all put in 2006 far from it .
Best CD of 2006!!!!.......2007-05-21
Brand new, thanks! This is the best CD I bought in over a year. A totally cool, chill-out CD. My girlfriend loves it too.

HELP I CAN'T STOP PLAYING IT!!.......2007-03-12
Oh my god, this cd is simply awesome. It is relaxing and upbeat at the same time. I can play it in the car on my way to work when I'm stuck in traffic, or at home at night when I dim the lights, it fits both environments. My best songs are mostly the vocal ones.
Stealing Time- I can relate to the songs lyrics
Can't Sleep- Very etheral vocals, heavenly!
Hope, and Liquid Love- nice instrumentals, flows well with Can't sleep
Alone Tonight- clever lyrics in this song
Overall the album is great and is one of the most unique CD's in my collection.
One of the best cds I own.......2007-03-10
Excellent cd as others have noted.
Most of the tracks are great.
Standouts are: Air for Life, and: Can't Sleep. They are simply superb. Great music with variations of driving beats and soft interludes. Female vocals that are almost hypnotic.
Track: Good for me, is great as well. Soft, with great vocals.
Most of the other tracks are very good, but as noted by one of the other reviewers, I did not like voice of the male singer(s) on what otherwise would have been very good, if not great, songs.

Nicely done ULTRA.......2007-05-29
Had this CD set for a few months now and I love most of the songs. Ultra has done a nice compilation of remixes.
A mixed bag.......2007-04-03
Ok, I normally don't buy mainstream compilation releases because most of them sound to "cookie-cutter" for my tastes. After listening to a few samples, I decided to give this 2 CD set a try. Unfortunately its basically a tale of two halves. CD 1 on my opinion is pretty bad and cookie cutter to boot. Disc 2 was above average for the most part. Defitetly much more hints of house on CD 2.
Ultra Dance, Vol.8.......2007-03-27
I love this series and this CD is no exception. It is a great CD with great songs. I love all the remixes. This is one of my favorites. I own all the ultra dance CDs.
good stuff.......2007-03-19
I like this, especially the Eric Prydz track, which is hot. I've recently just got into dance music and I love the Ultra compilations and also the compilations on iTunes called "euro club hits vol. 1" and "euro club hits vol. 2"
Ultra Dance Vol. 8 is GREAT!.......2007-03-09
My roommate and I both really like this music set. We recently went to Mexico and a shop owner heard it coming from our rental car and bought it from us on the spot! I reordered it as soon as I got home!

The back of this two-CD set may say "File under Lounge," but frankly, lounging will be the very last thing on your mind once you put Louis and Keely on. It's simply impossible to stand still while the duo, backed by Sam Butera and the Witnesses, gets going. When Keely sings "Hey boy, I can really cook," there's a tiny chance she's talking about something that takes place in the kitchen, but the galloping bass line behind her says that she really belongs to the dance floor. Whoo-hee! Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" is taken at a frenetic pace--do these people ever pause to breathe? The bulk of this collection was recorded between 1957 and 1962, and it makes for an explosive document of a now-gone era when men in sharp suits hung out at the Copa, babes with pointy rocket-launcher breasts at their arms. The sheer effortlessness of it all is still supremely exciting. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

fun swing.......2005-02-12
i just started to appreciate louis prima's band-this remastered double cd offers an excellent listening experience.
Jump, Jive, An' Wail!.......2004-06-17
Songs from Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses. Songs are great. Compilation includes songs from "The Wildest", "The Call of the Wildest" and "The Wildest Show at Tahoe".
Fast, funny, and worth every penny!.......2002-09-09
I was skeptical about buying a compilation CD set for fear it wouldn't be good... but I was wrong! I can't get enough of these CD's. I do Swing dance and Lindy Hop, and I think some of the tempos to these songs are a bit fast for dancing, but excellent for listening to when you just want to be in a good mood! Keely has a great voice, and Louis is just plane hysterical :D
A trip to the Moon on nuclear wings!.......2001-12-08
What a blast!
This was my first introduction to Mr. Prima & Co. What a swingin' treat!
You can tell from each and every cut on this twin CD set that these guys were having fun. Many of the songs have little ad-libs between Louis, Keely Smith, Sam Butera, and the other band members. Louis jumps in between solos to throw out comments, he'll scat, even proto-rap, and is having such a good time he'll try to keep from laughing while he and Sam duel with brass. Only true professional musicians can get away with that sort of thing and make it sound good. Louis & Co. are top-notch pros.
Keely solos on a few cuts to round things out, and basically, you get the feeling of what it must have been like to be kickin' it in Vegas back in the swank era while taking in Louis Prima's act. Maybe tomorrow night, you'll catch Dino at the Sands, and take in Torme on Tuesday. Or, maybe you'll just keep coming back here to see Louis, Keely, Sam, and the Witnesses again and again.
Many of the songs are just plain fun ("Robin Hood/Oh Babe", "Banana Split For My Baby", "Felicia No Capicia", "Greenback Dollar Bill", "There'll Be No Next Time"), and even the old standards take on a wink and a smile when Louis gets ahold of them ("The Music Goes 'Round And Around", "That Old Black Magic", "Just One of Those Things", "Embraceable You")!
Get yourself a martini, sit back and relax, and get ready to be swung back to swanksville. This set is one swingin' good time, whether you're six or sixty!
Fun with the swing masters.......2000-11-09
Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses constitute probably the single greatest influence on today's swing scene. I am not exaggerating. And this double-CD is a great place to start: Over two hours of remastered music, a great production design (neo-retro), and long liner notes. My only problem with the presentation is that the individual musician credits are left out. A must for all swing dancers and jazz musicians! ///// KOBY.

Customer Reviews:
Ted Nugent, please phone home.......2007-06-25
Ultra-Lounge Bachelor Pad Royale gives us a great selection of steamy romantic hits from the late 1950s and early 1960s that still sound great today! The lush and creative musical arrangements hold your attention rather easily and the quality of the sound is excellent.
The CD track set kicks off with "The Theme From Route 66" performed by Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra. The sound is cool, savvy and the melody goes along at just the right pace. The strings and percussion enhance this classic number, too. Great! The next track has The John Buzon Trio performing "Caravan" using the organ as they so often did to embellish the beauty of the number. The percussion hits it all just right and "Caravan" boasts a romantic and relentlessly upbeat melody.
"Cool" by Lou Busch & His Orchestra gives us an awesome rendition of this song from West Side Story; and "The Beast" by Milt Buckner oozes class and a certain type of panache you rarely hear these days. Like John Buzon and his buddies; the arrangement for "The Beast" makes good use of the organ. The piano shines on this number, too.
Alvino Rey's rendition of "Night Train" slinks along with a steamy, naturally romantic style that will prove beyond doubt that this music still retains its high quality control to this very day. Martin Denny was doing a lot of exotica by the late 1950s, but his version of "Harlem Nocturne" is sublime! The chimes work well; and the piano together with the bass make this number an instant classic. Hooray!
Sam Butera and his buddies perform a medley of "The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams/Fever" that leaves you sweating from its hot, hot, hot delivery; and "Street Scene '58" makes great use of the sax to romanticize this tune.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The last two tracks on this CD are Julie London's "Black Coffee" and "Melancholy Serenade" by King Curtis. Julie sings "Black Coffee" without a single superfluous note; but you should know that although "Melancholy Serenade" gets the royal treatment from King Curtis, this is not the interpretation of this song that I have heard before. Instead of the dramatic and somewhat boisterous use of the horns; King Curtis's rendition places the organ squarely into the spotlight of the arrangement and the single horn tones down this angle drastically. Nevertheless, the arrangement works well.
The liner notes include an informative essay by R. J. Smith; and the song credits and recording dates are there for you, too. The artwork reflects good taste and there are even two drink recipes!
I highly recommend this CD for fans of "lounge music" and for people who want to remember a time when cool music for lovers actually was cool music for lovers.
Enjoy!
Cool!.......2007-05-13
Brought me back to the days of tuxedos, secret agents and private detectives. Cool, very cool.
LOVE ULTRA LOUNGE!!.......2007-05-12
Nothing can be finer that Ultra Lounge - never a bad thing to say.
Title a bit of a misnomer but..........2007-01-27
Hard to see how some of the tracks on this disc fit in with the whole late-night bachelor pad ethos as they are, quite simply, and in the words of the great Stan Freberg, "too loud, man". That said, this is a great CD. The music is fabulous and beautifully re-mastered (Cy Coleman's "Playboy's Theme" is the epitome of bachelor pad cool and, by itself, worth the price of the disc) while RJ Smith's liner notes are, as ever, entertaining, witty and evocative. In fact the whole package is life-affirming, high-quality fun: just the thing to chase those blues away.
I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10
The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.
