The Angel Has Landed

Editorial Reviews
All-Music Guide
This is space rock of the most wistful, introspective and gorgeous kind, with songs that deserve their surrounding beauty.

Sonic Drench
This is truly beautiful music without any flaws to speak of.

Album Description
Vaportrail is proud to announce the release of their first album in over 3 years. On The Angel Has Landed, the band has incorporated more keyboards, guitars, and samples to fill out their lulling hypnotic songs with more nuances that reveal themselves after repeated listens. The album runs the gamut, from pretty acoustics ("Finders Keepers", "Melt", "Rest In Peace"), to dizzying guitar rave-ups ("Eta Carina", "Dream Yourself Awake"), to dynamic, mind altering space rock ("Europa"). No two songs are quite alike, yet the record flows nicely and holds up as one great piece of work.

4 out of 5 stars Droning ambient rock........2001-09-22

Knowing nothing about this CD and judging from the cover picture, which reminded me of the 'psychedelic trip' section of "2001: A Space Odyssey", I expected Vaportrail to sound like a hybrid between Ozric Tentacles and The Orb.
However, more fitting comparisons and influences probably include groups like Ride, Red House Painters, Swervedriver, the early Curve or even My Bloody Valentine (though with a bit less noise and feedback).
Vaportrail make the kind of slow, repetitive, atmospheric, trance-inducing ambient rock that's best appreciated when you lie down in a darkened room. It's great music to fall asleep to, and I mean that as a compliment. In fact, drifting away in a trance seems to be a theme reflected in several of the song lyrics and titles (Rest in Peace, Dream Yourself Awake, Melt, Suspended).
Lots of layered guitars, strings, synths and not much else: most tracks move very slowly and more similar to lullabyes than rock songs, with only a few tracks (Eta Carina, Dream Yourself Awake and Europa) offering more than a faint, discrete drum beat. "Acoustic landscapes" is the term that comes to mind.
