International Velvet [Import]

In the spring of 1998, Catatonia's International Velvet was the number one record in Britain, and they were touted as the saviors of U.K. rock. In itself, that's not such a great feat, since specious acts like Manic Street Preachers, Mansun, and Ocean Colour Scene have received similar praise. But in this case some of the accolades are justified. International Velvet is a cosmopolitan cavalcade of style and sound. Some songs ("Mulder and Scully," "International Velvet") are buoyantly punchy, combining the emphatic drama of the London Suede with the quirky vivacity of Elastica. Others ("Don't Need the Sunshine," "Johnny Come Lately") are more reminiscent of English folk- popsters like Nick Drake, and a couple ("Goldfish and Paracetamol," "Why I Can't Stand One Night Stands") even blend elements of trip-hop with lumbering bar balladry. Regardless of musical technique, all the songs are unified by the vocals of chanteuse Cerys Matthews, who can seduce, berate, and reduce the listener to tears all in a single breath. The Welsh music scene is Catatonic no more. --Jon Wiederhorn --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Quite simply, you have never heard how far country music can go, until you have heard Jack Blanchard and Misty Morgan!

OFFBEAT, BUT GOOD LISTENING!.......2007-02-05
FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GET A COLLECTION OF JACK BLANCHARD & MISTY MORGAN. I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED THEIR COMICAL SONGS. THIS ONE IS A GOOD MIX OF DIFFERENT STYLES. ENJOYABLE, YET OFFBEAT.
I lke this CD.......2006-04-27
I like this CD. most of all, that it has Tennesee Birdwalk on it, probably that is the best known hit from these two. I must listen to this CD a few more times to determine what I think of the quality of the recordiing. first time around it sounds pretty good.
An album not to be missed.......2005-12-02
This album is a superb compilation of the best of Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan's songs many of which have been worldwide hit records. I discovered them early in 2005 and I am familiar with many of these songs from their previous albums which I own, but I am delighted to hear the additional songs which I had not heard before. Jack & Misty are uniquely talented Country music artists. Their harmonies are both superb and distinctive with Jack's bass voice blending so well with Misty's rich alto.
Jack is an real artist with words having the ability to 'paint a picture with words'. He composed the majority of the songs they sing and their songs cover the whole range of life experience, as the title of the album so aptly says "Life & Death {and everything else in between}".
Interspersed with the more serious songs are some of their 'crazy' songs which so well illustrate their terrific sense of humour. These include Tennessee Birdwalk, which was a #1 hit and won them a Grammy Nomination in 1970, Humphrey The Camel, Legendary Chicken Fairy, If Eggs Had Legs, the catchy Dum Song and Cows (just listen to the lyrics) :) If you share their sense of humour you will not disappointed.
Other great tracks which relate to life's experiences include The Clock of St. James, You've Got Your Troubles (I've Got Mine), the poignant There Must Be More To Life (Than Growing Old), It Seems Like There Ain't No Going Home, Shadows Of The Leaves, Big Black Bird (Spirit Of My Love), Somewhere In Virginia In The Rain, Changin' Times, Place In Your Mind and Sunset Train. You can easily relate to the experiences in life that inspired these songs.
The two songs new to me, Don't It Make You Want To Go Home and Chapel Hill, are welcome additions which also tug at the heart strings.
Jack & Misty are both accomplished keyboard artists playing much of their own background music - Jack also plays guitars. They are accompanied by some of the best musicians around.
Jack & Misty have to be heard to be appreciated. Their songs just get better with the playing. They have something about them that gives them a "must listen again ... and again .... and again" quality. No how many times I listen to them I just NEVER, ever get tired of hearing them. I just grow to love them more each day.
Many of these songs can be heard on their website [...] ... just in case you need convincing.
Don't miss out on this musical treat.

Great album that grows on you.......2004-11-28
The album that shot Catatonia into the spotlight in the late 90's, 'International Velvet' contained their two radio hits "I Am the Mob" and "Mulder & Scully", as well as other strong tracks "Road Rage", "Goldfish & Paracetamol" and "Don't Need the Sunshine". This album definately grows on you and takes a few listens for most of the songs to shine, one of the few albums I can play all the way through, every time.
sweet catatonia!.......2004-01-06
I am a big fan of Catatonia and this album is the reason. The first song I ever heard from Catatonia was Mulder & Scully from this record. The album is great from start to finish with great songs like "Road Rage", "Don't Need The Sunshine" and "Strange Glue". The singer, Cerys Matthews, has a very unique and sexy voice and the lyrics are skilfully written! It's one of the best albums ever made, buy it!
my very first.......2003-04-30
i was 9 when i bought this album and it was my first album. I bought it as i loved road rage. As i got older i appreciated the album more and realised how good it is. road rage and mulder & scully where, and are, my favourites. The lyrics in road rage are really good but its the way she sings it makes it impossible to cover as it is truly HER song. The album was the best thing i bought and despite fading out Catatonia still remain one of my favourite bands. I also had a huge crush on Cerys Matthews and she was sort of my first idol. This album is definately worth getting and this is coming from a rap music fan with Wu-tang clan and 50 cent surrounding International Velvet!
Welsh have more going on than sheep..........2002-04-09
What do you think of when you think of Wales? Princess Diana? Sheep, lots and lots of sheep? Well those may be representative of Wales but after listening to this cd Catatonia won't be far from thought when you think of Wales. Cerys' voice is addictive and her lyrics are thought provoking and humorous ( I am the mob is a great example of this..) All and all this is a great cd and any one who calls themself a "brit pop" fan should own this cd no questions asked.
I prefer "Dead from the Waist...".......2002-01-09
Cerys Matthews has an amazing voice.
Is it clear as a bell? Sometimes.
Is it growly as gravel? Sometimes.
Is it girlish as a nursery rhyme? Sometimes
Is it strong as steel? Always.
Is it sexy? Invariably.
I consider this a slightly less mature effort than "Dead from..down" but this is a notable warming up thereto. I very much enjoyed the singles "Mulder and Scully", "Road Rage", and "Game On." It's good britPop.

Great Music!!!.......2004-05-16
Wow, I am too overwhelmed. This is soooo great!!!
Brilliance.......2002-03-26
I will be the first to admit my ignorance to Aha's work. They were never the trendiest of bands after the 80s. However, how lucky I was to find 2 versions of this track on the One Night at McCools soundtrack. It is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and I was stunned at the fact it never got any air time on MTV UK or on any of the radio stations here. The haunting music made my hairs stand on end. Absolutely beautiful. I would recomend it to everybody!
Do not neglect this masterpiece!.......2002-03-05
I just can not understand how a song like Velvet can be overlooked? It is utter beauty! The mixes on this disc will give you everything you need to enjoy for years to come. I first heard Minor Earth a year ago and it has not bored me yet. I must have listened to Velvet 500 times so far and it sends chills down my spine everytime.
They're back.......2001-05-15
This song also appears on the soundtrack to "One Night at McCool's". Originally recorded by side-project Savoy.
Esoteric Beauty.......2001-05-01
a-ha's `Velvet' is a whimsical atmospheric piece of sheer beauty. You have to hear it to appreciate this great melodic piece of elegant impressionism. Once again a-ha delivers a work of innovation and inspiration with this heart felt song. The `new york city mix' has a very soothing and tranquil feel to it. There is more than just talent and genius behind a-ha's work. They meld lyric, melody and their unique sound into something that transcends the definition of music. `Velvet' has to be one of their most definitive examples of this quality. I still get a chuckle or a sarcastic laugh when I tell people about a-ha. They refuse to even listen to the music. That is their loss. Yet I still know there are numbers of us out there who appreciate a-ha's artistry and that is a great comfort to me.
