I bought this at the recommendation of my bellydance instructor. I was not disappointed. It's a great mix of slow, fast, instrumental and vocal accompanied arabic music. Not very traditional, but suited my practice purposes perfectly.

This is a spin off of some sorts. The soundtrack to the Film (of the same name) is a really good release. This album is good but the soundtrack is one of the best of his CD's. RELESE SUB UNDERGROUND ON CD with something else SATURN.

Not being a great conoisseur of Sun Ra's work, I still feel confident enough to say that, in spite of psychodelic "spices" that might seem trendy, in spite of "etno" components, this CD shows deep and profound jazz feeling on the part of the band leader and his musicians.
And even if youre not a true jazz fan you still might enoy this eccentric music.

5 out of 5 stars One of the many great records by Sun Ra.......2006-01-09

Sun Ra is one of the most underrated composers of all time! Not only that, his arrangements are at times as phenomenal as the great Duke Ellington. There is so much happening on this disc it is hard to even try to describe it - it ranges from space noises to post bop ballads. 'Images has got to be one of the best songs in Ra's entire discography. It is hard to say whether his Ellington-like arrangement of the song on 'Jazz in Silohuette' or the unique fanfare heard on this album is better - they are both good versions. Sun Ra has discipline in his music and freedom in his music - not many groups of the 60's had both these qualities.

After watching the excellent film, I decided to go out and pick up the soundtrack. I certainly was not dissapointed. The opening "Space Is the Place" is a bit tedious, but who said art had to be entertaining? The album's other classic, "Rocket Number Nine", was subsequently covered by NRBQ. This is truly what galaxies thousands of miles away must sound like. Any avant-garde jazz fan or just 50s - 70s jazz fan in general must pick up this album. Greatest jazz album ever? Possibly.

    Dj Spinna has been around the corner, up the block, down the street, and everywhere in between when it comes to the music industry. After working with the biggest names in hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and dance, it's no wonder his name isn't more known amongst most of the listening audience. This may be due to the fact that he doesn't settle for one particular genre of music. Working his deejaying, production, and remixing skills for projects by Michael Jackson, Les Nubians, Rae & Christian, Mos Def, Mary J. Blige, Soulive, and countless others leaves little room for settling down and concentrating on one thing. It's almost like he's all over the place! That's probably the reason for naming his latest release Intergalactic Soul because you won't be able to label his music as being solely one sound.

    This might scare the ordinary listener, but it's a sigh of fresh air for those looking for more creative minds in music. Look at the recent love for the left that everybody has been giving Andre 3000 of Outkast or Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley. People are looking for something new and innovative to listen to instead of the same cookie-cutter tracks that make up the Top 40. Dj Spinna focuses more on producing with this album, leaning more towards actual musicianship rather than the usual sample frenzy that most other beatmakers resort to. Listening to a song like "Could It Be Too Soon" featuring jazz newcomer Lizz Fields is a perfect example of pushing the envelope in a new direction. The same can be said for the jazzy tunes of the N'Dea Davenport assisted "Where's The Love" and the borderline soul stirrings of Eric Roberson on "Butterfly Girl" Other songs feature jazz vocals, but offer a different twist for the musical backdrop. "Peace and Quiet" features Stephanie McKay on lead vocals in front of a more mellow drum kick, while "Living My Life" showcases Trish Angus singing over a dance arrangement.

    But it's not all about jazz fusion on this album by any means. "Current Events" featuring Alphonso Greer and the title track "Intergalactic Soul" featuring Little Brother's Phonte gives us a taste of the hip-hop side of things. And a funk-meets-dance groove is spliced in with the songs "Outta Time" and "Bye Bye Bye" (both featuring The Radicalz) as well as "Back 2U" featuring Selan. Dj Spinna does a few instrumental cuts like "Final Events" and "Computer Love" (not Roger Troutman/Zapp's song) to round out the album's diverse offering. One thing is for sure....Dj Spinna goes global and beyond with Intergalactic Soul. You're guaranteed to have an musical journey that is out of this world.

    Sun Ra didn't really have "greatest hits," or hits at all to speak of, producing scores of LPs on his own Saturn label in editions numbering in the hundreds, primarily for bandstand sales. These albums sported cover art handcrafted by band members, and the records have become rare collector's items. Whatever the title, Jerry Gordon, the person responsible for Evidence Music's ambitious reissues of the Saturn recordings, has constructed an excellent introduction to Sun Ra's cosmic empire of big-band swing, free-jazz improvisation, electronic sound effects, science fiction, and ancient Egyptian mysteries with this Greatest Hits.

    While the strange trappings of Sun Ra and the Arkestra--the names, costumes, homemade percussion, and space rap that seemed suspended between vaudeville and cult--remained constant, the music was always in development, picking up approaches from the surrounding world and the inner workings of its own processes. The 18 tracks here are drawn from 15 Saturn LPs, a film soundtrack, and two 45 rpm singles, and they range from the earliest Sun Ra recordings in 1956 to 1973, covering the band's odyssey from Chicago to New York to Philadelphia. It was a period that saw the Arkestra evolve from a hard-swinging, modern-jazz big band that was already rhythmically and tonally adventurous to a unique orchestra incorporating large-scale collective improvisation and ritual, then moving on further to a multilayered transformation of funk.

    Through it all, Sun Ra maintained a nucleus of brilliant and loyal musicians, with a saxophone section that rivaled Ellington's for durability and sheer brilliance, however different the musical context could be. Its members--including John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, and Pat Patrick on baritone--supply highlights throughout this collection. Virtually every track is of special interest, another dimension of Sun Ra's fertile creativity. Trumpeter Hobart Dotson adds a crisp brassiness to the intensely swinging "Saturn," and there are Ellingtonian touches in the plunger-muted trombone of "Medicine for a Nightmare." Early versions of "'Round Midnight," with a vocal by Hattie Randolph, and "I Loves You, Porgy" show Sun Ra's faithful and moving handling of other people's music. The episodic space chant "Rocket Number Nine," from 1960, has a Gilmore tenor solo that parallels period Coltrane and a Ronnie Boykins bass solo that uses bowed upper harmonics in a way that was otherwise unheard of at that time. Sun Ra's lyrical solo piano on "The Alter Destiny" compresses his decades of jazz experience (he began playing with Fletcher Henderson), while "Yucatan" is an episode of dense, propulsive drumming. The concluding "A Perfect Man," originally a 1973 Saturn 45, sounds like a slightly tilted theme for an espionage thriller. For those seeking entry into the sometimes daunting world of a great original, this CD is a good first choice. Identification of key soloists in the liner notes, though, would have been a nice touch. --Stuart Broomer

    Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods; Germantown is one of the more celebrated ones. Known for its cobblestone streets and historic buildings, Germantown has grown tough and dangerous over time. Our Bicentennial year found me driving a cab there twelve hours a day, six days a week, a rugged job with few perks. One of the best was the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Sun Ra and members of his Arkestra having a bite to eat at the local McDonald's. If this idea is not improbable enough, bear in mind that he was invariably dressed in full Saturnalian regalia.

    Sun Ra looked then, as he always did, like a visitor from outer space, quite happily out of context, oblivious to acceptance or the lack of it. This, I think, is ultimately the force of Sun Ra. However much critics desire to dismiss him as a quack, charlatan, or vaudevillian, he himself was utterly sincere. When you buy CDs by almost all musicians, you buy entertainment - predictable entertainment. When you buy a Sun Ra CD, you are purchasing a key to an alternate dimension.

    While Sun Ra recorded almost obsessively, he certainly didn't have "hits," unless there's a radio station on Saturn, in which case everything he did is a hit. Most of his records were self-produced and it's a minor miracle that we have them at all. I prefer the subtitle of this CD, Easy Listening For Intergalactic Travel. For novices and devotees alike, this CD offers a very agreeable trip into the world of Sun Ra, from swing and bop into the celebrated interstellar travelogue material for which Sun Ra is best known. It is a particularly good CD for neophytes, because it won't scare them away. There is enough that is familiar to help listeners understand that Sun Ra knew his musical roots cold, and that every note he played, however unexpected, he played on purpose. By the time you hit The Order Of The Pharaonic Jesters you are deep in Sun Ra country, reclining in Rocket Number Nine, libation of choice in your hand, gazing at Jupiter through the portal. Highly recommended.

    First off, i must state that I LOVE Sun Ra, and own 25 or more of his reissued CDs. (I named my cat after him, too.)

    Second, I *applaud* Evidence records for all their many great reissues of Sun Ra, and for even attempting to do a "Greatest Hits" CD retrospective. In some ways they succeed: they've compiled in one CD one track from almost each full length CD they've reissued. And you really can hear a WIDE variety of the many sounds & styles by Sun Ra & his Arkestra.

    However, eh. The success of pulling a track from so many styles and eras ends up sounding too disjointed (if that is possible for Sun Ra). Evidence does a fine job reissuing often two original Saturn recordings on one CD, and they pay attention to the moods of each album and always pair them with like moods. I don't want to discourage anyone from buying this if it is the only way they'll discover Sun Ra. I guess i just want to say that a better way to discover his music would be to listen to several albums in their entirity (go to the library and check them out for free if you don't want to invest $ yet.) Best ones to try first :

    "Angels & Demons At Play/Nubians of Plutonia" - A good beginner's CD. more straightforward but not straight. For those who either love jazz already or are indie pop/post-rock fans wanting to dip into Sun Ra.

    "Super-Sonic Jazz" - also a great beginner's CD, (not too wildly chaotic but early in Ra's career. Still contains brilliant pieces which aren't 'straight.'

    "Sun Ra Visits Planet Earth / Interstellar Low Ways" - another good start, but if you have and enjoy the above, why not try something a bit more out there, like the following...

    "Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy/Art Forms for Dimensions Tomorrow" - WONDERFUL abstract work, each piece has its own feel and mood. My first and favorite Ra.

    "Heliocentric Worlds v1" - another masterpiece, more percussion oriented.

    "The Magic City" - the song 'the magic city' is a 27min masterpiece. part of me wants to mention Miles Davis 'bitches brew', but i know Ra fans would give me hell for that so i suppose i won't.

    "The Singles" (2CD) - many excellent moments. This is the CD (2CD) for those who must have a retrospective spanning his entire career.

    "Soundtrack to Space is the Place" - lots of fun vocal songs here. 70's and proud. the film is a blaxploitation classic!

    I bought this "Greatest Hits" to give to my father for a first go at Sun Ra, but ended up deciding to give him "Angel/Nubians" instead, which he ended up prefering. If you really want to start with a retrospective and hear samples of all eras of Sun Ra, try the 2CD "Singles" instead.

    This is as good an introduction to Sun Ra's music as one could possibly wish for. The collection has many things going for it: a very generous selection (18 tracks, 78 minutes - it justifies the disc's steep price) organized chronologically, which amply showcases the evolution of the Arkestra's work; Evidence has culled the 18 tracks from 18 of their Sun Ra reissues, so if the listener has some favorites (s)he can then easily find the album they originated from. Among the highlights, I'd personally mention the jaunty 'Kingdom of Not', perhaps the collection's most accessible instrumental piece; the strange, fascinating and unique 'Rocket #9', whose successive episodes both contrast and complement each other; the moving piano solo 'The Alter Destiny', full of delicate melodic touches by Sun Ra; the spare and percussive 'Yucatan'. The Arkestra's listeners will not merely hear a band play music, but literally live it; music here becomes a ladder towards the transcendent.

    I bought this CD after watching several videos of Sun Ra that were made later in his career, including Space is the Place, an appearance on Night Music the TV show, and a docementary. I saw him live once at a festival and was charmed and intrigued, I like his nature-humanity-alter destiny message, and the music I enjoy a lot, too. I like the chants, the standard jazz, not so much the squeaking, but it grows on you. The biography book Space is the Pace is also very interesting. The music on this CD is varied, charming, listenable. I hope to get some more of his CDs. This is somewhat earlier in his career, I think, but it has been a good introduction, it has a lot of levels that reveal themselves with more listening. I recommend it.

    There are few words that strike more fear into heart of any music fan than "Greatest Hits". Usually with a greatest hit record you program the CD player to skip certain "classics". This is not the case with this record. It really is a nice review of Sun Ra's expansive musical styles. It opens with some rather straight forward jazz and then ascends through his highly experimental numbers. One thing I really like about this CD is the chronological order. You can really experience the evolution of Sun Ra's sound and the transition from Sonny Blount to Sun Ra. This is the absolute perfect place to start if you are not familiar with Ra and will give you some jumping off points for further exploration of Ra's universe. If you like a particular track, go pick up the album it originated from and begin your travels of the spaceways. If you are a die-hard Ra fan, you should already have this, if you don't, pick it up! It is nice to throw in the CD player and have a real variety of sounds to help you on your journey to Saturn.

    Ok, so this is more like a greatest hits album with a couple B-sides mixed in, but this is still a great collection of Ash at it's very best. Each song is yet another slice of pop-punk-indie perfection. Better still, they're songs for different attitudes, if you are feeling mad and just want to burst, listen to Numbskull, it's perfect for that kind of situation. And the list of incredible songs goes on, but you don't want to hear that. What you should hear is Intergalactic Sonic 7". So go, buy it, right now! I mean it!!

      I also bought the LP in 1977 - and it has remained one of my favorites ever since. Just unique. Catchy, harmonious, rock opera full of some of rock's best voices including David Cousins and Annie Haslam. Should have been much better known than it was, but I'm thrilled it's available on CD now.

      "Time to wake up, time to rise..." are the words which open this album, and they are appropriate to this release of a concept-rock legend on CD. From the beautiful instrumental "Approach" to "Keeper Keep Us" featuring Meatloaf at his soulful best, this album is a joy to listen to. The concept is simple: This is a "recording" of the "Welcome Home" concert of the InterGalactic Touring Band. The Band has been roaming the Galaxy for 10 years promoting understanding and peace through music, and now they have returned to Earth and are playing the first concert in the newly-completed Orbital Entertainment Dome - a space-going concert hall. One or two of the songs give away a disco-era influence (most notably Love Station), but things like the flat, merciless-sounding refrain of "We are the law!" in Space Commando or the intricate instumental weaving in Silver Lady can give you a shiver. So please return your seat-backs to their full, relaxed position, and remember the use of electronic devices with headphones is encouraged on this flight...Get The Inter Galactic Touring Band, and prepare for launch.

      Ever since I got the vinyl LP back in 1977 I have adored this unique album. Nowhere else in the music world have the "spirits" of progressive music and classical science fiction been so delightfully combined, Nowhere! This record stands alone! Great artists, great music, great stories, great fun!
      For years I've waited and hoped for a reissue in CD format, and now it is here at last! Wonderful!

      This album is about as rare as it gets, if you are a collector, you gotta have it. Sci-Fi, progressive fans, you too!

      5 out of 5 stars This is Sun Ra's Arkestra at its most far out........1999-09-25

      Sun Ra and his various Arkestras have a well-earned reputation for being ahead of thier time. Never more so than on this set which captures them live in two complete concerts in the early 1970s. The first piece on the second CD, "Out In Space," sums up the various moods of Ra's music of the period. It begins with a spacey drone; June Tyson then enters chanting Ra's poem followed an earth-shattering blare from the entire Arkestra that will either set your hair on end or send chills up your spine, depending on how you feel about this sort of "free" playing. Solos by all of the Ra stalwarts are played that explore most the tonal possilitites of their various instruments. The CD's notes are particularly helpful here, listing each soloist in his/her order of appearance. This music is not for everyone. But die-hard Ra fans, or music fans who like envelope bending should not pass this one up!

      Apart from their numerous, kick-a** collaborations with other Asian artists, this CD contains the BEST of M-Flo when Lisa was still apart of the gang. (Can't they all kiss and make up?) Seriously, you can play it straight through and enjoy the ride...

      M-flo is one of the most versatile artists in Japan today. They produce a seamless blend of hip-hop, pop and add in the numerous remixes of their songs which are done by every type of artist in Japan and you hav bonified stars. M-flo was made up of a rapper, Verbal, dj Taku and Lisa, a Columbian-Japanese vocalist. Verbal's raps are always witty(although he can be a bit grating to anyone used to 'real' American rap) and he switches flawlessly betwen English and Japanese in his flows. dj Taku spins inventive beats and Lisa has a beautiful, soulful voice. Currently, Lisa is on her own and Verbal and dj Taku have been collaborating with the hottest artists in Japan, such as Crystal Kay, Chemistry and BoA for singles.

      That being said, this is a great, classic M-Flo album and also their last album altogether. It has a great mix of feels. "Mirrorball Satellite 2012" is a slow dance groove with cocky rapping and a disco-feel. "Chronopsychology" is a quick song, similar to the feeling of driving through a bustling city, with a bass line and crashing sound effects. "Hands" is a great chill song, with a piano opener. The rapping seems a little out of place in a song about missing the touch of someone, but it grows on you. Come Back To Me, Prism, one Sugar Dream and Come Again are all very famous songs of theirs. Orbit-3 also has a funky piano hook as well as tite rhymes and has been sampled by other, more hard-core Japanese rappers, such as ZEEBRA. L.O.T.(Love or Truth) is a beautiful song about love that even those who don't speak Japanese should understand. Basically, "The Intergalactic Collection" has just about every great M-Flo song on it, as it was a goodbye album. Perhaps you shouldn't shell out $40 for it, but it is worth it in gaining a great introduction to Japanese urban music.
