Album Description
Double Yellow, a new CD featuring the band by the same name, presents a series of free improvisations by Portland based artists Rob Blakeslee on trumpet, flugelhorn & misc., Michael Vlatkovich on trombone and misc., along with Los Angeles based Brad Dutz on innumerable percussion & concertina, plus William Roper on tuba, percussion, voice, bovine horns and shells. From this somewhat traditional combination of instruments emerges an unusual music of arresting timbres, intelligence, wit and intensity.

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

I am on a Roll today, finding all the odd balls that nobody has reviewed yet. Okay, get this: take the beautiful simplicity of chamber music from the London Sinfonietta; add some Rock-N-Roll rhythms with some wacky modern instrumentation, throw some of the songs off the beat just when you understand the melody, & use some strange titles like 'Yellow Pages', 'Adjustable Wrench', & 'Rust for Piano'...I think that will describe it. Some experts compare his style to the metric complexities of Stravinsky & the repeated formulae of Phillip Glass with the energy Madonna's dance music. Why isn't there a 'Listen to Samples' section? Okay, so you can't hear it for yourself. You will have to take my word on it...Bummer, it maybe out of print...never mind.

This latest compilation release from Deutsche Grammophon, hot on the heels of The Yellow Guide to Opera, consists of not only three CDs, but also a 144-page booklet that provides biographies of 100 composers, a glossary explaining 100 musical terms, and notes on each of the 42 tracks on the discs. Aimed, clearly, at newcomers to classical music, the three discs cover almost five centuries of music, arranged chronologically from the Kyrie of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli to Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Orchestral, chamber, and vocal are all represented, performed by a roster of celebrated names: the Amadeus Quartet, Martha Argerich, the Vienna Philharmonic, and Herbert von Karajan, to name but a few. A Good Introduction to Opera.......2002-01-09

For those persons looking for an introduction to Opera this compilation is an excellent beginning. The recording quality is pretty good overall, and the performances are both interesting and satisfying.

I keep listening to these CD's, and they always sound fresh and fun.

An absolute riot, and a lot of great (if brief) music!.......2002-08-02

What a wonderful project. Pianist extraordinaire Guy Livingston has assembled 60 pieces for piano, each under one minute in length, from composers well-known and obscure, and put them all together in this delightful collection. Some of the composers you'll recognize are Englishman Dan Warburton and American William Bolcom, but all of the pieces are worth noting. Some use electronics, percussion, or prepared piano, and Livingston's pleasant speaking voice can be heard on more than one, but it's always his confident and skillful piano that's at center stage. Some are hysterical, like the piece by Ketzel Cotel, who turns out to be a cat belonging to a New York City composer, and some are quite serious and demanding. But best of all, if you don't like something, wait a minute, and some else will replace it!
A great album to have going in the background -- if you don't mind having your mind and your attention twisted around periodically -- or to listen to while you stare at nothing.

Ignore That Rediculous First Review.......2007-03-28

To see 2-1/2 stars as the overall rating for this lovely gem of an album really upsets me. And all because someone wholly unfamiliar with this arena of music, by chance stumbled across it, and decided to hate it based on a bizarre comparison with a dead icon. Likewise, to bring up a cheesy wannabe punk band as a comparison is indeed like equating apples with oranges. Sounds like he needs to expand his record collection badly.

While admittedly there is a slight tinge of psychedelia coloring a few of the songs, this is really an alt-country album and fans of that genre will love it and haters will hate. I will admit that it did take a few listens for the album to sink in but now I'm totally hooked. Couple of the standouts are:

What Voltage is the Moon: a beautiful, emotive and cinematic instrumental piece that perfectly flows through melodic peaks and valleys.

Stargazer: impressively maudlin and gorgeous harmonizing girl-boy vocals.

By the way, the singer sings quite capably with a longing twang perfect for this genre and the steel guitar is a show-stealer. Please check this album out and give some much-needed attention to this Indie Scottish band.

highlands and fishing villages.......2006-03-27

While listening to the CD I wanted to find some information about the band and was so shocked by the negative review here that I have decided to write this.

This really is NOT anything like Green Day and it is neither "teeny-bopper" nor "bubblegum".

Try to imagine Spiritualised and The Jesus and Mary Chain playing indie folk music.

I'm sure it will sound great for driving across their native Scotland to, from quiet fishing villages to rolling highland.

Oh and yes there are some sliding steel guitars.

One Bad Element can RUIN an entire Band........2005-09-03

I was led here by some circuitous route online, looking for a band with Jerry Garcia-like trippy steel guitar (noone does it like he did I guess?).

Anyways, I may be an overcritical SOB, but this band has a common defect....the music seems OK, but the SINGER is so farging teeny-bopper whiny and derivative in a downright Green Day bubblegum fashion that I cannot cope!
