Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels great and small argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults--a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady." Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter-egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively; the stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters; and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks.

Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that many of the rarities here have already been repurposed by shrewd mixers, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form. A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Mm-hmm! I can smell that funky music!.......2007-06-18

Rare indeed; I can't imagine where you would find original 45s or even LPs containing all of these songs. That would be one lifetime task. The good folks at Rhino Records with their remarkable and creative tastes took out all of that hassle for us and now offers a rather unique set of rare funky music from the vaults of Atlantic/Atco and Warner/Reprise dating 1967-1977 with 91 tracks spanning across 4 filled-to-the-brim discs. Any soul music fan will no doubt want to explore this area of the R&B category (funk and I mean pure funk), but at times the flow of the music could seem a bit too much to handle. Some of the cuts go more than 3 1/2 minutes and sound like they might not end any time soon. The other case would be some tracks sound bizarre or unusual in terms of sound due to instrumentation, arrangements, etc. Such "bizarre" tracks are the sitar-laced rendition of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Steppin' Stones" with a crazed flautist leading the way on a very blazing and dizzy-sounding track. The good outweigh the not-so-good remarkably, though. So get ready to hear punchy horns, infectious, simplistic and driving drumbeats, super funky bass lines, crunchy guitars, oozing organs and ultra-soulful vocals. On disc one, some noteworthy tracks are "Spreadin' Honey", "Get Otta My Life Woman", "Snatchin' It Back", "Sexy Coffee Pot" and "Help Me Make Up My Mind" (an answer to "Can I Chane My Mind"). Be sure to check out "Sookie Sookie", "Feelin' Alright" (done by Lulu (To Sir With Love)!), and "Engine Number Nine" on disc two, "Face It" (love the female backup singers on this), "Wah Wah Man", an alternate extended mix of "Rock Steady", "Suavecito", and "Nuki Suki" (from Little Richard) on disc three as well as "Moon Shadow", "Kissing My Love", "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky", "Chug Chug-A-Lug", "Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away", and "Chicken Heads" on disc four. Those were just some of my favorite tracks, so I may have missed some. Many are instrumentals, but there are a handful with vocalists singing about love, dancing, partying, social concerns, etc. Bottom line: worth checking out and worth the discovery. You definitely won't hear this stuff on commercial radio. Only about three or four songs you'll recognize; the rest is like a surprise. If you're into R&B and want to explore the funk side of it, you can't find a better pick, and about 90% of these songs aren't available (some or many) together anyplace else. The real deal of funk; that is "what it is!"

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IT IS ?.....NOTHING BUT A NON STOP PARTY! .......2007-02-10

This set right here could very well be the holy grail of rare and hard to find grooves. This box set is funkier than a high school locker room! Every track on here is certified stank(aka funky). The most amazing thing about these tracks is that they capture the spirit of the times better than a lot of their more popular comtemporaries(at least in my opinion). "What it is" feels like an audio documentary of underdogs making the funkiest music and having a great time doing it. If you listen to how these tracks are sequenced, you'll feel like a story is being told - rather than just listening to another compliamation of vintage r&b music.

I'm only 25 years old. Every time I play this set, I feel like I'm at a 70's block party, chillin' in a long black cadillac fleetwood and scoping out some foxy mamas with hot pants and thigh high leather boots
(that's how good the music sounds). With 20 plus tracks each per disc, you can't help but be amazed with the consistent quality of the music.

All I gotta say is buy this set and let the funk be your guide to love, happiness, and your rites of passage to throw it on down and dance your
a-- off!!! If you ain't diggin on this, you're diggin a hole for yourself!

Long live the funk baby!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Mind blowing. Worth every penny. And so on........2007-02-04

This is the real deal folks. Music with grit and soul and feeling, before the shining distraction of drum machines, computers, samplers, bling, and "MTV's Cribs". I saw an ad for this and went to several book and record stores such as Borders, and to my local hip indie CD store (headquarters to the local music scene circle-jerk), trying to describe it to various clerks. Which was about like trying to teach a card trick to a basset hound. Save yourself the agony of trying to interest a white twenty-something body-piercing pincushion in ordering this set for you, and just get it here. You'll be glad you did. The sheer quantity of great music on this is staggering. I love the mix of instruments with vocal tracks, and the mix of "name" artists like Aretha or The Meters with many very obscure ones. Whoever compiled this did a great job in selecting the track order, so it makes it perfect for a long party. Everyone will be getting up and shaking their groove thang. This is priceless music from a lost era, so grab it before it disappears again.

4 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment.......2007-01-28

I am a funk fan who is still by all means learning...With the passing of James Brown recently, I have tried to speed up this process a little and take as much in as possible. I think this collection of "underground" funk is phenomenal, 4 discs and never a dull moment.

4 out of 5 stars Soul-tastic... All Hail Rhino! Nobody knows box like Rhino knows box.......2007-01-14

I stumbled over this set just a few days ago, and I have to say that it's easily one of the top 10 best random-artist compilations I've ever heard in my life, and I own hundreds of them.

I won't say there's no filler--by filler I mean the cover tunes--and I'm confused as to why "What So Never The Dance" is credited to the Houseguests when this is a longtime Bootsy Collins track? What, is Bootsy in trouble with Warner Brothers and can't re-release his own stuff under his own name anymore?

But disc one is an absolute gem--you can't make your own mix better than they've done it here. If you're a fan of James Brown, Parliament, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, the aforementioned Bootsy, Tower Of Power, Prince, early Stevie Wonder, Motown, Isaac Hayes, then you shouldn't be without this set.

Absolutely worth buying.

The original Broadway cast recording of Annie still has as much charm as it did in 1977. Charles Strouse wrote the snappy music and Martin Charnin's clever lyrics capture the misery of the Great Depression, the glitter of the upper-crust life, and the character of the FDR administration. Andrea McArdle shines in the title role, most notably with the classic anthem "Tomorrow," while Tony-winner Dorothy Loudon and Reid Shelton provide support as the hag Miss Hannigan and the benevolent Daddy Warbucks, respectively.

The 1998 remastered edition includes as bonus material 17 minutes of tape Strouse and Charnin recorded for backers' auditions in 1972. They present the seven songs with some plot structure and early ideas for characters ("Miss Asthma" was a precursor for Miss Hannigan). Many of the songs didn't survive the final cut, but "Just Wait" eventually became "Little Girls" and "We Got Annie" was resurrected for the 1982 film. "Tomorrow" also appears--touted as the song's earliest recording--and Strouse and Charnin's rendition will increase your appreciation of McArdle. You won't listen to this rough draft every time you play the CD, but you'll enjoy it if you have any interest in the show. The booklet includes the original synopsis and production notes as well as new notes by Charnin on the extra tracks, but no lyrics. --David Horiuchi

"Annie" remains one of the great classic musicals of the American theater. The songs are as fresh and lively today as they were when the play was first produced. They lyrics capture a "hard knock life" and the determination and hope of one little orphan. This will be a timeless key to Americana in years and years to come.

Who stated that Aileen Quinn is a better Annie than Andrea McArdle.

I have not listened to the CD (have the original album), but had to share that those that the 16 year old claims "suck" are amazing. I saw the original Broadway production, and have loved the music and stars since. Those who followed the first few Annies on Broadway (and those casts), don't come close to the talent displayed back then.

Album Description

Porter Wagoner is a much misunderstood artist. Singing about the peaks and troughs of the human experience from inside a purple sequinned Nudie suit he has created the most extraordinary catalogue of any country music artist, and quite possibly any popular performer, ever. Don't believe me? Then check out the skull cracking and heart rendering reverberations of The Rubber Room, the troubled soul of George Leroy Chickashea, the desperate howl that is Lonely Coming Down and the seething hurt that is Fairchild. Yet amongst this human train-wreck there are jewels of burning pathos and profound spirituality like Moments of Meditation and Little Boy's Prayer. It is indeed this collision of an image that is at times admittedly pure kitsch, with songs and a delivery that are soul-shakingly sincere, that makes Porter Wagoner perhaps the most compelling recording artist of all time. Still not convinced? Then go now, right now, and listen to The Party by Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. For the first time the darker, more poetic highlights of Porter Wagoner's astounding career have been compiled with love and care, featuring a slew of tracks never before sighted on CD. Once you have heard this album you will never be quite the same ever again!Psychotronic, dark, heartfelt country... with a touch of showbiz! First time on CD! Deluxe collectors 16 page package featuring original LP artwork and exclusive liner notes. All tracks are remastered in 2006 from the original master tapes! Compiled and curated by noted musician (Snog, Soma, Black Lung) and film composer David Thrussell.

5 out of 5 stars RUBBER ROOM.......2007-07-17

This was a very good C D. Music like it used to be real glad I got it

5 out of 5 stars Pictures From Life's Darker Side.......2007-04-28

The fact that Porter Wagoner brought non-other than James Brown in to perform at The Grand Ol' Opry should give you some indication that he is much more than a pompador & purple Nudie suit.

Johnny Cash once remarked, "No one tells a story like Porter Wagoner" & the likes of "Fairchild" & "Jim Johnson" are all the proof you need. Murder, lust, madness,& sheer unmitigated heartbreak abound here. In short, this as macabre as Country Music gets. With perhaps, just the right amount of unintentional kitch thrown in to sweeten the deal. Regardless of that, the sincerity of of "Moments Of Meditation" & "Lonely Comin' Down" cannot be denied.

Though perhaps somewhat overshadowed by a certain tall haired protege, many of the songs here reveal not only a consummate craftsmen, but also someone willing to push the boundries of his genre. I'd be hard pressed to find another song quite like "Rubber Room" filed under "Country". At times, it borders on 60's Psyche. Fortunately, Wagoner's forays into Disco have not been included.

Songs like, "Fairchild" & "The First Mrs. Jones" have more in common with the Pulp Noir novels of Jim Thompson than anything you might have seen on Hee Haw. Despite sometimes lush arrangements, these songs capture the true bleakness lying behind Country's shopworn cliches. Many of the songs here bring a chill as they tickle the funnybone.

While Hank Williams Sr.'s Luke The Drifer recordings are an obvious influence, I'd say it all lies somewhere inbetween a Countryfied Serge Gainsbourg & Leon Payne's "Psycho".

Maudlin, macabre & heartfelt, this is one of the finest Wagoner collections on offer. Not to mention some of the darkest stuff to ever come out of Nashville. It's rapdily becoming one of my favorite Country albums of all time. Much more than the man who introducted us to Dolly Parton, here's proof that Wagoner is truely one of the most underrated figures in Country Music.

4 out of 5 stars Who knew life was so desperate in the country?.......2007-04-20

Desperation, poverty, adultery, insanity, murder... they're all present and accounted for. Vintage country music is great stuff! An excellent collection from one of country music's unsung greats. Hipsters will love this...

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Country Storytelling .......2007-03-29

First off, this is not a greatest hits package, so if you are interested in that, you might want to look at some of the RCA packages that are excellent. But . . .
Storytelling has long been a basic facet of Southern life and country music strongly reflects the storytelling infleunce. There was a time when those stories weren't all happy, fluffy pieces like you will hear today. Go far enough back in country music history and murder songs abound, some repentant, others defiant. "Rubber Room" compiles a ranging collection of story songs recorded by Porter Wagoner. The truth is that these songs aren't always pleasant and they aren't feel good. But they plunge into the depths of the human condition with deep insight. What you get is a portrait of an extremely strong artist performing some powerfully written songs. Summarizing them is difficult so I would say they best thing you could do is experience this CD. Everything from miscegenation to adultery to the paralyzing impact of alcohol is explored here. And it helps to underscore what all of us Southerners have known, Porter Wagoner is a fine singer and interpeter of song.

4 out of 5 stars if John Waters put together a Porter comp, this would be it.......2007-02-21

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rock for any age.......2007-04-02

I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of this CD! Buy one; you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars If You Like What You Hear on the Radio, Buy This........2006-11-10

I'm really just a radio fan of 38 Special. But I decided to take a chance with this "best of" collection. And I came out golden on this one. Every single song is at least as good as the handful that you hear on the radio now.
Personally, I tend to go for the harder bands. So I'm often having to enjoy my music in a semi-voluntary semi-solitude while pretty much everyone else plugs their ears and runs away. But this is catchy, very nice, and lively while somewhat softer rock and roll, with a more general appeal--something that the whole family can kind of enjoy together. I would probably compare 38 Special to the Eagles, for beat, intensity and overall listenability.
So far it has a 5-star average rating, and I wouldn't mess with that.

4 out of 5 stars Great Tunes.......2006-08-17

This is really good music to listen to on a beautiful day driving in the car or just hanging out- I love 38 Special and this CD has alot of their hits on it. Its worth a buy

5 out of 5 stars WHOA.......2006-04-21

I could see, why they are called Southern Rock indeed. At first, back in the old days (aka 90's for me), I mistaked this guys for an 80's band. Most of their great songs came out in the 80's I believe. So, these guys can't be southern rock. But that doesn't matter, cause they still kick it.

Caught Up In You, is quite a good song, due to the guitar solo. It's practically that 80's "Dream song" since it's so perfect in every manner. You know how the band Autograph had their perfect song called "Turn Up the Radio"? Well, Caught Up in You, is just as perfect, or more perfect. I can picture many things when that guitar solo goes off... It's quite astounding what music can do to the brain.

Somebody Like You- When this song first started, I thought it sounded a little like Billy Idol's debut. This isn't a waste of time ballad, like some bands right. This is happy feeling, yet sad due to the "broken" heart. Any broken hearted person could listen to this and feel great. This song makes alot of sense, which helps you come to your senses. (good line huh?) The Soli (minor guitar solo) is very good.

Like No Other Night- Very very 80's. I could see someone rocking out to this song. I heard the song "Straight to Your Heart" inside that song, by Bad English. Except, it's well written. I could imagine John Waite singing this. Over all it's a great song.

I reviewed only 3 songs, because they touch me the most on the inside. They're fantastic. I love .38 Special. Where would the music world be without them. This cd (off itunes) blew me away, listening to the whole thing. I listened to this cd many times last night, and I didn't get to bed until atleast 3 am! haha!

On my ipod, I only have hair metal and classic rock, aka like Journey, Boston, Eric Clapton, etc. I got sick of rap and R&B, so I took it all off. Sound crazy? Well, I've only been listening to classic rock and hair metal for a few years, since I was born in 1990. KEEP CLASSIC ROCK AND HAIR METAL ALIVE.

5 out of 5 stars This guys are not Southern Rock in my book.......2006-01-03

If you looked up 38 Special on the internet or in a book, you would probably see these two words: southern rock. Widely considered southern rock, I think they have a more Foriegner-type pop/rock sound and feeling. This album is a rather nice compilation. It has all the major and minor hits and fan favorites. You get 18 songs on one disc and it's rather inexpensive. Not a bad deal. If you like 80s pop/rock like Foriegner or REO Speedwagon buy this superb collection of radio friendly rock godliness.

    Product Description

    Powerhouse Records is proud to present the latest release from our "Guitarchives" Series--"Danny Gatton Live In 1977-The Humbler Stakes His Claim" This release is comprised of newly discovered and previously unheard recordings made by Danny Gatton's sound engineer Chris Murphy throughout 1977 and 1978. What distinguishes these recordings from other live recordings is that these recordings were actually made with microphones placed in the audience, so there is a real feeling of being right there in the club with glasses clanking and audience responses, rather than the more sterile sound of a "board mix".
    The set list features some Gatton repetoire standbys such as "Harlem Nocturne" two very different versions (one which features a cameo by the late Dick Heintze on Hammond Organ), "Fingers On Fire", Nit Pickin'", "Canadian Sunset" and two scorching renditions of "Sweet Georgia Brown" as well as obscure songs like Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce" and two Blues numbers: the slow blues "Danny's Blues" and the shuffle "Walkin' With Danny".
    A must for Gatton and guitar fans!!!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY TOTO!!.......2007-05-05

    All of the songs are incredible!! from the very famous AFRICA, the great ballads I'LL BE OVER YOU, ROSSANA, the pure pop of 99, GEORGY PORKY, pure rock of HOLD THE LINE, PAMELA, and the newest songs included here LOVE HAS THE POWER, CAN YOU HEAR THAT I'M SAYING, this is the classic TOTO whom I knew when I was a child; brillant album, brillant songs, excellent sound!!

    5 out of 5 stars Past to Present 1977-1990 by Toto.......2006-11-10

    Love every minute of this cd. It's music from my teenage years. Favorite song is Africa. Would say anyone would enjoy this music.

    5 out of 5 stars Great New Songs!.......2006-06-25

    I have all the TOTO albums so I bought this for the 4 new tracks. As a compilation I think it's fine, though the choice of tracks is not perfect and does not do justice to TOTO's ouvre fully. As for Byron, lets just say that despite what you think of his looks or clowning on stage, the guy has a good voice. Love Has The Power reminds me of Africa. Jungle drums and golden guitar melody. Can You Hear What I'm Saying also carries the spirit of Africa in it's lilting rythms and lush guitar licks. I for one think that TOTO excel at funk and have no problems at all when they decide to veer off into this territory. The musical direction suited their vocalist perfectly. Of course, not many TOTO fans would put up with a purely soul direction so he had to leave. As an aside, what group on earth could play so diversely? Play Hydra next to the new tracks here and you'll be questioning if it's the same band after you pick your jaw up off the floor!

    4 out of 5 stars -.......2006-04-16

    Calling this `generic corporate rock' is hilarious, if insulting to toto who put a lot of thought and effort into their music. The only thing that's a bit generic about this is 1990's digital standard dogging down their tape masters.
    I'll be over you is an example of a toto song with good vocal, lyric, music and barrels of emotion. I think this is a truly beautiful track and once you develop enough to listen to these songs for what they are (love songs in the truest sense - could be about your dead mum!) you will see that toto are a great band on the whole. This cd is 1990 so obviously it suffers a bit from the digital of then. Ironically the songs like Rosanna that loads who buy this seem to love are the kind that suffer most compared to the vinyl releases which is only a credit to what decent tracks they are. Ones like I'll be over you translate perfectly to cd and remain as beautiful on this cd as they are on the 45 12' single.
    I mean really though, generic? Of all things you could call toto how could you call them generic. Do you listen to the musicianship. The human energy put into the keyboarding, the drumming by the least generic and possibly best drummer to ever walk the face of earth. Solo's by lukather? I think you should listen again.

    My thoughts on this disc are that its not perfect no, it is `artistic' as an album is and not designed/may not satisfy `best of' customers/ fast forward happy listeners (that's maybe why it's not called best of- or greatest hits.
    While understandably 'past to present' means greatest hits to a lot of you, to other's it means a `vision' of what's gone on. A reflection on toto `from back then till now'
    Get the essential toto if you are hoping to find a personal fav track you aren't sure is here, or if you are one of those hungry people, you like big big cd's that contain lots of avenues. This is album art. I think it is a great start and a great cd I highly recommend to anybody.

    4 out of 5 stars Toto. Studioperfection to the smallest fingertip........2006-02-14

    Toto is a "perfect" band, in that sence that soundwise it`s overall perfection. The reason for not 5 stars, is that on some tracks the perfection is to much. You can`t eat sweet cackes every day, sometimes you have to eat some dark rye bread if you want to feel good all over. But anyway. Here we go. Track 1 Love has the power, start`s with a weird choir song, which sound`s not to good. But when the instruments and the vocal kicks in gear, it sounds great all trough, with enough space between the different instruments to make
    it a good listen. Track 2 Africa with it`s ethnical drum beat in the beginning, and the cool "low key" vocal set`s the standard for this 80 ths hit song from Toto. Overcool studioperction this one. Track 3 Hold the Line has it all, from the beginning with the hammering on the keyboard to the last drumbeat, it lift`s you up. One of the few tracks with "fuzz" on the guitar`s which makes a glimmer touch with a small breezee of "light heavy metal" for a change. Track 4 Out of Love, sorry to say is a let down. A big one too. When this Cd came out in 1990, this track was unrelased. This ballad is a stream of cliches. Anyway with Track 5 Georgy Porgy we are back in business again with this funky song, with fresh rythmic drum beat for a change. Track 6 I`ll be over you is a nice ballad for but has much of the same problems that Track 4 has, some boring perfection elements that drag`s it down, but other wise fine.
    Track 6. Can you hear what i`m saying is also a previously unreleased track, but this one shine`s for a change. It` has a certain "jazzy funk rock rythm "beat which lift`s it up. Track 8 Rosanna is a classic. Classic Toto at his best. It`s a well composed gem, which shines on every beat. Track 9 I wont hold you back is anyway a stream of cliches, when it comes to ballad sing/song writing. It`s slow ok,but this is to much "sugar cake" to spark a shimmer. Track 10 Stop Loving You, has a great instrumental synth beginning, but then it`s suddenly change`s into an ok funky beat song, with some great instrumental elements included. Track 11 99, is an early ok funky song, which sparks here and there, but it`s easily forgotten. Track 12 Pamela is a likeable song which hold`s the standard, execpt for the overkilled synth sound from the 80 ths which pop`s up here and there. Track 13 Animal is total out of t line. This sound`s like poor man`s "disco funk". The theme goes around and around, and doesn`t kick off. But anyway. Toto shines most of the time and is a great introduction to the band for beginners. Toto is anyway studioperfection to the smallest fingertip, either you like it or not.

    2 out of 5 stars Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-12

    I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
    The Kink's CDs really put a person in a 'State of Confusion'. I have yet to find a CD collection with all of the Kink-essential songs on it. This CD is bad because it doesn't have all of the essential songs, AND to top it off two of the songs are LIVE versions. What a rip off!
    The essential songs are: Come Dancing, Catch Me Now I'm Falling, Lola, You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, Destroyer, and Around the Dial (if I'm missing any, please let me know).
    So, you have to pay $14 to buy the CD on Amazon, but you are only getting $3 worth of original, great songs (Come Dancing, Catch Me Now I'm Falling and Destroyer). You can buy the songs Destroyer, Around the Dial and Catch Me Now I'm Falling for $1 each on iTunes. (Unfortunately, iTunes and Rhapsody don't currently sell the other essential songs I've listed.)
    Ray Davies is really making it hard for us to get all of his best songs in one place, but by doing so, I'm sure he's making a heap of money from us all.
    Hope this helps.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't Forget to Dance.......2007-03-16

    When I was in high school, I loved the hard-edged sound of the Kinks, the Who, etc. Much later, the Don't Forget to Dance video really touched me for some reason.

    I noticed that most Kinks collection lack this masterpiece. Now, it is my all-time favorite Kinks song. Although I still love the more hard-edged songs by them and Lola which defies description, I plan to buy this collection to have Don't Forget to Dance along with many other fine songs.

    5 out of 5 stars My high school students gave up rap for this!.......2006-11-05

    I had forgotten just how much fun the Kinks were, then I purchased the CD for the song Come Dancing and had no idea that I would know all the other songs on the CD. My 14-18 year old art students pick this CD over rap and current artists to listen to whiile creating art works. It is just plain old fun!

    4 out of 5 stars they always delivered the goods.......2006-08-22

    The 70's-80's Kink era was considered the weaker material but when you listen to this compilation, they still put out lots of quality material.

    Their sound and approach changed a bit, they obviously went more commercial, and they lacked some of their original identity yet these are still great songs. 30 years later, this was not a weak era and they put out a lot more good stuff then most other bands.

    Rock and Roll fantasy, Detroyer, Celluloid Heroes, Don't forger to dance, Superman are all killer songs.

    I would like to see one day when they get a boxed set w/You Really Got me era, Lola era and their hard rocking Destroyer era.

    5 out of 5 stars THE BEST.......2006-03-16

    I REMEMBER LISTENING AND SINGING TO THE KINKS AS A 10 YEAR OLD CHILD. GREAT CD. RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY.

    What have we got here then?let me tell you,31 tracks of imaginative, energetic,addictive poprock with intelligent lyrics,that's what.
    The first CD I've bought for three years.And the wait was worth it,by a group that wasn't well known here,nor in the US.Great shame that.
    The first song that made me sit up and notice them was "Making Plans for Nigel"(1979),that one got quite a bit of airplay over here.
    Their highest chart success was "Senses Working Overtime",which reached number 10 in the UK charts.
    A group that has had more then it's fair share of bad luck.
    (Andy Partridge's stage fright at one point,didn't help matters.)
    But a group that's always worth a listen!
    ~~~~
    Every fan of XTC will have their own favourites,but for me standout tracks are:~
    Life begins at the Hop
    Making Plans for Nigel
    Generals and Majors(double A side with "Don't lose your Temper",shame that track is absent from this release)
    Towers of London
    Sgt.Rock(Is going to help me)
    Ball and Chain
    Great Fire
    Love on a Farmboys Wages
    Dear God
    The Disappointed
    The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
    I like the music on this collection. However the sound quality is uneven. The treble on "The Mayor Of Simpleton" for example is blistering. Not all cuts suffer from this problem so if you intend to listen to the songs back to back you will need to repeatedly adjust your eq to make things bearable.
    5 out of 5 stars A great overview of a band that should have been huge........2006-07-27
    "Fossil Fuel: The XTC Singles 1977-92" is a a compilation of every British a-side the band released during their tenure with Virgin Records. As an introduction to the band, it provides a fine overview of their career and history and you can hear how many pieces should have been huge singles, but never were.
    XTC started as a ska/punk new wave band, driving rhythms, buzzing organs (courtesy of keyboardist Barry Andrews) and skanking guitars from Andy Partridge dominated the early work. While it was a bit inconsistent (mostly due to odd vocal styles), Partridge's compositions already showed an undercurrent of wit ("Statue of Liberty") and pop hooks ("This is Pop?"). When Andrews departed to be replaced by guitarist and sometime keyboardist Dave Gregory, the band's compositions became more and more enamoured with harmony, arrangement and melody, first the compositions of bassist Colin Moulding (throbbing mechanical rocker "Making Plans for Nigel", early acoustic rumination "Ten Feet Tall") then eventually Partridge (the churning "Towers of London").
    The band eventually took an unusual shift, embracing these textures even further, to the benefit of their performances and receeding the punk elements in favor of Beatles and Beach Boys inspired pop elements-- the brilliant pop hook on "Senses Working Overtime" provides a fine example of this. When they quit touring, using the studio as an instrument and compositional tool became central to their work (Moulding's delicate and lovely fantasy "Wonderland", Partridge's "Love on a Farmboy's Wages"). A pair of late '80s pop albums ("Skylarking" and "Oranges and Lemons") produced a seemingly endless series of stunning pop songs, many of which are represented here ("Grass", "Dear God", "The Mayor of Simpleton", "The Loving" are all absolutely stunning). While their last record with Virgin felt a bit overarranged to me, they still managed some great pieces ("The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead") and have remained relevent as long as they've recorded.
    Literally the only complaint I can make with this is the decision to leave off the Dukes of Stratosphear (XTC's alter ego when they recorded psychedelic music) singles-- while they didn't seem to pick the best of that project for singles, it seems it should be here. Nonetheless, with the material presented in remastered sound, this is a fine collection and a worthy starting point for anyone curious about the band. Just make sure you listen all the way through as the band's evolution is dramatic.
    5 out of 5 stars The Definitive XTC Compilation!.......2005-09-04
    This release contains EVERY single XTC released on their beloved (arf arf) Virgin Records between 1977 - 1992. From Barry's finger on "Science Friction" to the woefully withdrawn "Wrapped In Grey" single. Purposeful, but incomplete, collections prior to this (the very cool Waxworks/Beeswax set, the poorly compiled The Compact XTC, and the almost obligitory in it's existence Upsy-Daisy Assortment) are seemingly rather unnecessary next to this. It contains all of the hits, near hits, and should've-been-hits. It also contains all of the Terry Chambers singles (his last being the gently psychedelic "Wonderland"). Considering the genuine quality, quantity and diveristy of the material this would make a great introduction to XTC. And for old fans : a great collection to reflect upon the awesomeness of XTC. Highly recommended!
    2 out of 5 stars Not what you might expect.......2005-07-31
    Some music fans seems to want to praise this band as an "undiscovered treasure" or "underrated, shoulda been stars" group. Frankly, there isn't anything all that impressive on these two discs.
    And look, I LOVE British music. But I wanted hooks, memorable melodies, stylistic nods to the Beatles or the Kinks (or even Blur), some sort of British pastoral whimsy etc......there is virtually none of that here. The entire first disc is just boring - maybe if you like some of Elvis Costello's albums like "This Year's Model" and "My Aim Is True", you will find something to like here as the sound is similar - that now dated, post-punk, new-wave sound that really doesn't interest me at all. I was hoping the second disc would be more melodically interesting but it was not to be, save for a couple of songs towards the end. Even they, however, weren't THAT great.
    So, I gave this band a chance......but if this is their best stuff, then I'll leave it to others. I tend to think that maybe in this case, widespread success has eluded them because they simply aren't that good. Definitely listen before you buy.
    A teen pop star whose fleeting fame was usurped by that of Donnie Osmond, Keith Green--former runaway and rock & roll bad boy--went from rabble-rouser to born-again Christian in the aftermath. By the mid-'70s he and his wife, songwriter Melody Green, dedicated their full lives and musical abilities to their faith, forming the still active Last Days Ministry, in which the music played a central focus. Tragically, Green died in a 1982 plane crash and his short but prolific career thus became of greater poignancy to the evangelical Christian community left in the wake of his passing. Green's musical message, piano pop with hard-line born-again themes and lyrics showcasing his theatrical vocals ("Most people don't find out till they're half dead / That they need another life"), is presented in total on this posthumously issued volume of The Ministry Years. --Paige La Grone
    Customer Reviews:
    5 out of 5 stars those crazy prophets.......2007-05-07
    To call Keith Green a prophet may seem the product of an unguarded moment, particularly if 'prophet' is up there beside 'flawless' on your conceptual shelving. Yet a slow-and-steady listen-through of this two-disc compilation does more than take me back to my teenage years, when Green plausibly had as much influence as anyone on the shaping of my adolescent faith. It reacquaints me with his prophetic impact on a generation of mostly young Christians in this country and the United Kingdom.
    Like many prophets, Keith Green saw matters in black and white. Like many, his preference for the short, sharp shock over against conversation and process galvanized many of his listeners into a depth of commitment to Christ that might not have happened otherwise. It alienated others, who might have become friends.
    Like many prophets, his impact was for a moment. Like many, he died suddenly and young.
    Like some, his legacy endures--arguably--because its more extreme impulses were not allowed the years in which they might have grown into something uglier, something destructive, something vain.
    In consequence, his songs wash over this reviewer with a potency that is difficult to reduce to description. Time and again, Green picked up on a theme, set it to music, and brought it across in a more relational, intimate, transparent mode than seemed possible. In that way, too, he was a prophet. Like one of those wandering 'men of God', his proximity to the divine mind and heart are almost spooky. Like them--his mission accomplished--he was quickly gone.
    If there was a more powerful influence on what we now call Contemporary Christian Music, I cannot imagine who that would be. Keith Green handed us a precedent made of words, expressions, a penchant for exhortation while there is still time that continue to flow into the work of artists as diverse as Twila Paris, Delirious?, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Chris Tomlin.
    Green pushed at every boundary that ever appeared around him, driven by a near obsessive hunger to see others love Jesus as he himself did. He did not worry about offending if only some poor, homeless wretch might still be brought in.
    He would have been hell to work with. Keith Green at faculty meeting? The horror ...
    But when he spoke, back then, lots of us listened. Many of us chose. Many are still living out the implications of that choice, realizing in retrospect that God used an imperfect spokesman to say something better to us than even this passionate troubador knew he spoke.
    Like prophets do.
    5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2007-02-06
    While the music itself(by modern standards) may be considered easy listening,the lyrics are hard hitting meat and potatoes. You know exactly where he stands and where we ought to. The praise is just that too.
    5 out of 5 stars Some of the best music in History.......2007-01-28
    Keith Green was God's chosen instrument to sing truly life changing, God glorifying songs that edify and open the hearts of believers to Worship the Lord. I thank God for this compilation of tremendously wonderful songs that soften my heart and bring tears to my eyes whenever I listen to them. This compilation and the 80-82 cds as well are my favorite music of all time from any genre! I whole-heartedly recommend this album and any of Keiths albums to all who want to come closer to the Lord.
    3 out of 5 stars Keith Green "Ministry Yrs- '77 - 79' ".......2007-01-05
    Keith Green excelled at integrating 'popular folk' sounds into Gospel. It was unique because for one Keith was blessed with an unusual ability to seemingly be adept at singing on the high end of Tenor reaching well above where most could reach, and his 'sound' was undeniable of that ability. He both wrote & composed his own songs which although to his credit, do not present a wide variety of style, exposure, or influence other than what was his signature sound. His anthology contained here represent his legacy well, but realizing his career was cut very short after contracting cancer. His Strong points continue to be the integrity in which he lived matched Closely to the themes of which he sang. Also his passion and love for his LORD was undeniable throughout his repertoire. This is a very good listen, not so much for Keith's creativity, but for the content which consistently ran strong to encourage those who make think themselves unable to reach God;Keith's testimony is one that protrays Jesus, as his Redeemer, Lord, Advocate & Friend.
    His songs convey a 'Real' relationship with God that is both powerful and unbreakable.
    5 out of 5 stars A never ending ministry.......2006-12-25
    God brings certain people into this world for a reason. Keith Green didn't leave his own mark, but delivered God's timeless message through his music. Through his musical ministry you can feel his passion and love for Christ is real. He believed what he said and practiced what he preached. Every time I listen to his music, I feel his energy and passion for God and can't help but be touched my it. The difference is, the music and words make me think of Christ and his selfless love for the world. It isnlt just another "hey that's a great song." There is substance and meaning. I can't help but think that this God fearing and exceptional man was taken home so soon because our heavenly father felt this world wasn't good enough for such a devoted Christian. His work will live on because it is God's will.
    5 out of 5 stars Classic and Upbeat Fahey.......2006-03-04
    I am a major fan of John Fahey because he plays music that sounds like a guitar, rather than songs that can be played on guitar. Some of his albums feature songs that may sound obscure to the uninitiated, but this one is very approachable and really showcases his best. One of my all time favorite guitar albums.
    5 out of 5 stars Lively Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals .......2004-10-05
    John Fahey excels as performer and composer in this outstanding compilation of his distinctive brand of solo, finger-picked, steel strung acoustic guitar blues and folk.
    This well selected set covers a period when Fahey was really sharp and focused.
    Melodic, original, engaging solo instrumental pieces, played with attack and gusto - Fahey always thumb and finger picked a full loud sound out of his dreadnought Martin guitar.
    The instrumentals are a fusion of traditional blues and folk and John Fahey's gutsy reinventions of both - here we have striking metal strung guitar sounds and strident melodies.
    Many of these sharp, punchy, lively, highly original guitar pieces will become favourites you'll feel compelled to hear again and again.
    This re-release comes remastered and with three new bonus tracks (tracks 16-18) making it a must buy.
    5 out of 5 stars Great collection chosen by Fahey himself.......2003-06-03
    One of the most inventive guitar players you'll ever hear on a compilation chosen by none other than Fahey himself. The CD adds thee highly generous bonus tracks to the original, including the 23-minute "Fare Forward Voyagers" -- a jaw-dropping passacaglia of sorts that never dips in invention or interest for its entire length.
    5 out of 5 stars Acoustic guitar's most brilliant pioneer.......2003-01-10
    This single-CD best-of has a fair amount of material in common with Rhino's 2-CD "Return Of The Repressed" collection, but is a more compact and cohesive reading of the first half of Fahey's career. Stunning acoustic guitar work with the undying creativity that Fahey infused into all his work. If you haven't heard Fahey's work before, this is an excellent starting point; exploration into his original, full albums is also highly recommended.
