The Dead Poets

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
More than merely presenting poetry in a novel way, The Dead Poets are continuing a long tradition as old as poetry itself. One of the earliest poems in English, “Beowulf,” describes scenes of Old English bards (called “scops”), performing poems about tribal history to harp accompaniment. In modern times, musicians have often mined poetic tradition for their lyrics: Simon & Garfunkel with “Richard Corey” by Edwin Arlington Robinson (1896-1935); Loreena McKennitt with “Lady of Shalott” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892); and so on. The act of putting poetry to music allows both listener and musician to transcend the words and the notes. The Dead Poets call this marriage ofsong and verse “musico-poetica.” It’s about learning poetry by note, not by rote. We hope you enjoy it.

Album Description
Great songs are often considered great poetry, but with The Dead Poets, great poems also make great songs. A favorite verse, a catchy melody, a bit of harmony—put them together and you might hear something in the poem you hadn’t heard before. The Dead Poets use music to transform classic poetry into a fresh and exciting experience, accessible to everyone. From Cummings to Dickinson, Wordsworth to Rumi, you’ll love the way the “muse” in music brings out the “Oh!” in poetry.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27

This recording is arguably one of Sondheims greatest! The Frogs, which appears here with a brilliant cast (Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell among others) is one of Mr. Sondheims oddest pieces of theater. Although it was recently revived on Broadway with a new book by Mr. Lane and that recording is probably better, the entire first half of this recording (which is The Frogs) is brilliant for nostalgias sake and for the amazing expierence of the music itself. Mr. Sondheim has created such music for The Frogs! Very grandiose and stunning!

But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!

The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

Contrary to other reviwes posted I will tell you that the Evening Primrose on the Mandy Patinkin Cd "Dress Casual" IS the "Primrose" to own. This one was in my opinion under acted and undersung. While Mandy Patinkin is always over the tip, Ms Peters is one of the best Interpreters of Sondheim's works and the orchestration on this is much darker and deep, like the subject matter of the piece. I found this whole CD lacking, given that just like the "Dress Casual" I bought it only for the "Evening Primrose" selections. Thank the GODS for CD Burners so I can compile my own best of Sondheim CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15

I find the Evening Primrose here much better than that on "Dress Casual." Firstly, because the two performers--Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy--are both amazing singers. Also, because both of these performers are younger and thus, their voices are more "youthful". For this musical, in particular, "youthfulness" is important; Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are simply to mature to effectively do these parts. I find Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, absolutely superb, and his version of "Not While I'm Around" (on the NYP Sweeney Todd recording) is far and away the best I have ever heard (except for LuPone's dismal British accent). This Evening Primrose alone is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing........2004-02-17

>The Patinkin-Peters version of "Evening Primrose" is in Patinkin's "Dress Casual" CD, the studio recording that became the basis of his Broadway concert. I believe this was the first time all four songs were recorded.

Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2004-01-31

If you're looking for the Mandy Patinkin "Dress Casual" CD (as an alternative or supplemental "Evening Primrose" recording), note that Amazon has it listed, for some reason, under "classical music".

    Album Description

The Dead Poets Society soundtrack marked the three-time Academy Award-winner Maurice Jarre's (composer) fourth collaboration with director Peter Weir. The two collaborated on Weir's 'The Mosquito Coast' (1987) as well as 'Witness' (1985) for which he earned an Oscar nomination and a British Academy Award and 'The Year of Living Dangerously' (1983) for which he received the Sydney Critics Award. Jarre took home Oscars for David Lean's 'Lawerence of Arabia' (1962), 'Doctor Zhivago' (1965) and 'Passage to India' (1984). For the Dead Poets Society, Maurice Jarre was faced with perhaps the most difficult challenge... He had to write the final dialogue with his music, to draw together the feelings of those students who stood up for their teacher (Robin Williams). What he came up with was a kind of anthem, a piece of music which not only summarized the feelings in that classroom, but also touched that deep yearning for truth and justice within us all. This soundtrack also features a track from the Witness soundtrack, 'Building the Barn' and four tracks from the 'Year of Living Dangerously' soundtrack. Warner.

Love the music from the film, but disappointed that an album titled the same as the film didn't include more of the film music but was instead somewhat of a Maurice Jarre soundtrack compilation (including music from "Witness" and "Year of Living Dangerously").

I am sure that anyone reading this review will agree with me on the fact that m. Jarre's status as a composer is beyond legend. What a pure genius. HOWEVER, I simply have to write this review to warn his fans what a huge disappointment this album is. Frist, the quality of the recording is tinny and insipid [I am not some picky audiophile, but live albums usually leave a lot to be desired]. Most important is that the arrangements and their performance by this orchestra is just totally unsatisfying. Lets face it, what we all love about Jarre is the power of his music in relationship to the films for which it was done. We want the evocative quality of the real scores, pretty much as they were for the films. You wont find it in this album[close your eyes and think of your favorite film score. You can hear it in your mind easily. now imagine hearing an album where the arrangement of it that you hear bears little relationship to what you lovingly remember. Thats the reason for my profound dissatisfaction]... So just buy the 'real' soundtracks and enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars "Ageless Composer..Legendary Icon Extraordinaire..Jarre".......2002-01-21

Highly skilled composer one of the "Old Guard" film scoring Giants...belongs to a very exclusive club of longivity...creating some of the most brilliant scores ever to grace filmland...Mauice Jarre can write music for any story-line...from any country in the world...one who fits the bill of legendary icon in his most worthy profession...FILM COMPOSER EXTRAORDINAIRE!

Not being one so taken with LIVE RECORDINGS, but this 2-CD-Set has much merit, quality and enjoyment, all music composed and yes, conducted by MAURICE JARRE, with very capable musical organizations~ BBC Concert Orchestra,Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, how's that for a Grand Slam line up...but let's see what musical scores make the grade of "stand outs" and the ever popular "highlights".

Starting with the stand outs ~ "A PASSAGE TO INDIA"(1984), string section opens with counterpoints from percussion, giving you a sense of traveling through India, brass takes over with a main theme, gives the ten minute Suite body---"FATAL ATTRACTION" (1987), solo piano sends chills through your memories of the story line, almost textures of "Classical Jazz", blending eerie strings with muted brass joining in for substance, reminds me of some of 1940's murder mysteries with Bogart or Mitchum---"RYAN'S DAUGHTER"(1970), haunting theme with melodic overtones, give way to the percussion section, moving within the unforgettable melody always stumping the music fans, where have I heard this before?

What you've all been waiting for...the HIGHLIGHTS ~ "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"(1962), exceptional score for this stunning film, won an Oscar for "Best Original Score 1962", percussion and brass draws you into the desert, living each passage from an unforgettable arrangement that sits high on the composers list on his achievements---but the one everyone remembers for orchestration, originality and lasting impression of "Classic Soundtracks" is "DR, ZHIVAGO"(1965), sweeping Russian melodies with poignant blends of the windwood sections, listen as the counterpoints abound reeking with passion as the love of two women for one man, the Main Theme is probably one of the most recognizable in the world.

Milan Records has given us an additonal score "SUNSHINE"(1999), a beautiful haunting score that has Jarre's signature in place, the chorus gives off a heavenly sound of "Pure Harmony", counter balanced by the orchestration, gotta love it!

This significance of this album is the earlier music. The music written for the famous French film director, G. Franju. The characteristic Jarre sound had already crystallized at this stage. The later selections on this recording are a testament to various musical idioms which Jarre can write for while maintaining his own unique style.

        Album Description

Their debut album `the electric haze' created an emotional experience through the use of instrumental textures and moods. With their second release, `deprogramming' they re-explore some of the avenues already tread upon in the virtual city of `electric haze' as well as providing some new experiences as well.

This is not just a remix album. A coalition of artists including band members and some of their friends have reworked six of the tracks from the original album into new and startling configurations. In addition, the album contains previously unreleased material.

Their sound has been described as a modern splicing of New Order, Future Sound of London and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Carla Archuletta of the indie music magazine The Global Muse has said "Count Dead Poets Society as one of the few modern and innovative bands in the sub-cultural underground of the disenfranchised that is defining Electronic Goth."

According to Raven Nightshado, the band's keyboardist and vocalist, "This was a cool way for us to sort of re-explore some of the ideas we had originally put into 'electric haze'. We wanted to do a re-mix album instead of a bunch of singles because I've always thought that singles were kind of boring. Who wants to listen to nine mixes of the same song? It's kind of narcissistic for any band to do that and I think it's a waste of money to buy a single. Maybe someday we'll do something in that format, but not right away.

We got a few of our friends to work with us on this stuff and D-Rokk really came through for us with his mixes. Some other people have signed on to do re-mixes for future projects but D-Rokk is the only non-band member whose mix made it onto `deprogramming'. Unfortunately, one of his mixes wasn't completed in time to make the pressing, so we'll have to stick it in somewhere else later, maybe it'll be a hidden track or something.

DEPROGRAMMING is also our first official release with lyrics I've written. The track is called Synners. We've done it live a few times and people really seemed to like it, so we decided to put it on this release. When Wa and I finished recording the vocals, we knew we wanted to have Ryan Mann from Hotboxed as a guest vocalist. Those guys have been friends of ours for a long time, and we're very proud of them. Back in the days when we used to produce concerts, we had them at several of our shows, while they were still in highschool. So that's pretty special to me. I think Ryan has the coolest voice, and he is fun to work with."

Wa, the band's percussionist and programmer says that "The idea behind `deprogramming' was partially about the phenomena called `deprogramming' which is employed by people whose children or other loved ones have been indoctrinated into cults. There is a recovery process which follows retrieving the cult member from the cult and showing them how to `unlearn' the dogma they have been brainwashed into believing. Our `deprogramming' is one in which we hope to bring to light the relationships of humans to machines, to religion, and to government. With the right help, people will unlearn the doctrine of spoon-fed non-reality which permeates so much of pop culture today. It's a way to unwind from the cult of Brittney Spears."

Get this CD. That's all there is to it. Why? Because it's terrific. Am I annoying you yet? The tunes range from catchy pop (Tyger, Crocodile Tears for example), terrific acapella numbers ( Daffodills, the haunting 3-part round of 100's Of ways), laid back country/folk (Rubbin' Brown Bellies) upbeat joyous singalongs (Blue Breaks Through) etc.etc.etc...
These guys are good, really good. Their musicianmanship (if there is such a word) brings established poems as well as their own compositions to a wonderful life. Listen to the samples. If you don't like this CD, well, then.........I'm just not sure about you. Then why are you here? Oh just get it!

I've never enjoyed poetry like this before! The Dead Poets offer a fun, toe-tapping take on classical literature that would make Emily Dickenson hide behind her chair. (Like in Emily Dee, where they let us know that every Emily Dickenson song can be sung to The Yellow Rose of Texas!) They weave the classics into modern lyrics in some songs (check out the sample of Crocidile Tears, which does Lewis Carroll proud). In other songs, they simply let the poetry stand alone, complemented perfectly by their melodies (Funeral Blues, by Auden). I've never seen another CD that can be enjoyed so much by both kids and adults. From the hilarious to the profound, these three guys' melodies will have you singing and dancing, crying and laughing from start to finish.

I haven't heard anything like the Dead Poets. They take great poems and turn them into great songs with a folk/bluegrass sound. They sound similar to Phish. There is a real focus on bringing out the rhythms already in the lines of poetry, thus the poems flow naturally and don't sound forced. I had "Tyger, Tyger burning bright" running through my head for days as if it were a catchy radio song. The beautiful harmonic developments and skillful instrumentation make this CD enjoyable to music lovers, as well as poetry lovers.
