Sex, Age & Death [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Quite possibly the greatest accomplishment of Geldof's musical career. Recorded at the studio of Queen drummer Roger Taylor and Tricky producer, ex-Boomtown Rats and long time collaborator and friend Pete Briquette as producer. Sex, Age & Death sees Geldof exercise his emotional demons with songs of ruthless honesty, brimming with passion and emotion in an album of live and loss. 10 tracks including 'One For Me', '$6,000,000 Loser' and 'Pale White Girls'.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "Final" album from Boogie Down Productions.......2007-06-05

Sex & Violence--

Released in the winter of 1992, this fifth studio album from Boogie Down Productions found its frontman, KRS-One in a state of transition. In his personal life, he was recently divorced from wife and fellow rapper Ms. Melodie, and had been recently sued by a former manager; the `BDP crew' was whittled down to DJ Kenny Parker and sideman Will `Willy D' Broady (in the liner notes a bitter KRS takes the time to point out that others "are not down, so stop frontin'"). West coast-based rap acts were coming into their own as a collective, from Ice Cube to Cypress Hill. The Geto Boys gave a southern face to gangster rap and east coast-based rap had a handful of new faces like Black Sheep and Naughty by Nature. What's more, a trend of infighting began with some of BDP's fellow politically-minded peers like X-Clan and Poor Righteous Teachers, who took to criticizing KRS on records or interviews. KRS-One's response to all of this was not as the pacifist he had gained a rep for being, but to come out with guns blazing, Criminal Minded style. The stark cover art by Robert Williams lets listeners know this will not be the average hip-hop statement. This was perhaps KRS-One's angriest album since his first, taking swipes at various perceived enemies, both internal and external to hip-hop culture.

Throughout the LP there are superb production values by the artists (DJ Kenny Parker & KRS-One), and guest collaborators Prince Paul ("Who are the Pimps?", title track) and Pal Joey ("Duck Down"). "Questions and Answers" takes on hip-hop journalism with a skeptical eye; "Build and Destroy" questions whether Islam-influenced rappers are just bandwagon-hopping; "Say Gal" bashes backstage groupie behavior. "Drug Dealer" admonishes street-level drug merchants to at least try to go legit; appealing to civic-mindedness in drug lords may seem uncouth, but in KRS' worldview, "organize and legitimize your business; remember, everybody else did this." The album's other subversive track is "13 & Good", a tale of a disco club hookup gone terribly wrong: Guy meets girl at nightclub, they go home to be intimate, girl admits to being 13, gets mad, calls her cop father who's apparently on the `down-low'... This predates R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" songs by over 10 years, by the way. The album hearkens back to By All Means Necessary with a spoken-word closer, "The Real Holy Place", where KRS waxes philosophic about contemporary religious trends.

The anger reflected on this album spilled over into real life, as KRS & crew would bum-rush alternative-rap act PM Dawn at a performance and physically remove them from the stage. Album sales were overshadowed by rap's newer superstars (and likely the Soundscan system which wasn't kind to anyone who didn't post big numbers in their first week). As a result, this is arguably the most slept-on release from BDP. A deluxe re-release should include the excellent remix to "We in There" and any other bonus material.

5 out of 5 stars Great album with an important message.......2007-04-23

Its kind of hard to deny what Krs-One has brought to the game. His flow is phenomenal and the insight he gives is precious even now. Standout Tracks: DUCK DOWN, RUFF RUFF(dope match up with Freddie Foxx), 13 AND GOOD(the story of a guy who sleeps with a teen that calls her father who is a gay cop will have you in stitches), POISONOUS PRODUCTS, QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, LIKE A THROTTLE, WE IN HERE, THE REAL HOLY PLACE(the deepest track on here), WHO ARE THE PIMPS? and the reggae tinged joints like SAY GAL and SEX AND VIOLENCE are gems also. Filler: NONE! Bottom Line: BDP's six album is still a classic with a message that still isnt heeded till this day. Besides the slammin production, Krs showed that he was 100 steps ahead from the average rapper with this album. Any born again hip hop head would do well to start off with Edutainment and work their way down to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Better than I remembered!.......2007-01-19

For those who like real hip-hop, who know it's not about the bling bling and who want the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite from the Teacher!!!.......2006-08-11

I really feel like this was the best BDP album. KRS-1 is always amazing yes...but this is just mind blowing! It deserves 10 stars. Start your hip hop collection with this.

5 out of 5 stars Question? Why everything you do is Fresh? .......2006-05-30

I've attempted to write this review before but it would not post due to it's length, so I'll attempt to be brief, (notice I said attempt). Why would I run out of space writting about a seldom heralded little known BDP album?

Well, first being that I consider this album to be perfect. And I mean perfect in every sense of the word. Sex and Violence is my all time favorite album and I ain't scared to admit it...

But first, let's set the historical context. The Blastmaster was at a very strange time in his life when he made this album. He had just divorced his wife Ms. Melodee. He had split up from the majority of the BDP crew (hence the harsh liner notes for anyone but Kenny Parker and Ill Will to "Stop Frontin'"). He'd been subliminally dissed by X-Clan, (RIP Professor X), Wise Intelligent from Poor Righteous Teachers, and Prince Be of P.M. Dawn. Maybe even a little subliminally by Ice Cube and NWA, (although that one's gotta be read into really deeply). Hell, even D-Nice was talking bad about Kris in the Source. The Heal project had failed. BDP's live album and corresponding video did not move the units that he or his label had desired. Even worse, East Coast Hip Hop seemed to be on a decline, (this album was released prior to Illmatic). What to do? Well, for starters, Krs showed up impromptu at a P.M. Dawn concert and unceremoniously through Prince Be off the stage, ("Damn, Kris IS kinda big"), and then proceeded to rock the house to the tune of "I'm Still Number One". Proof positive KRS was not havin it in '92.

Unfortunately, all of these incidents led to a very confused fan base. Seems everyone had gotten used to KRS' Stop the Violence and Edutainment messages and forgotten Criminal Minded and By All Means Necessary. They also forgot that KRS is still a human being and not some sort of deity. Ultimately, his fan base left him as it has done and will probably continue to do for years to come. The fact that KRS is an artist and will express himself with how he is feeling at the time needs to be recognized. I'm sure ALL Hip Hop fans have felt alienated by KRS albums or ideas at some point (myself included).

Sex and Violence is the culmination of all of KRS frustration. The Blastmaster of old reared his ugly head and spit hard and fast. KRS bludgeons the competition with tracks like...well, everything except "The Real Holy Place" which is a sort of spoken word piece about God being within us all and "Drug Dealer". On the later, KRS brilliantly advises drug dealers of the world to unite and use their money to improve the community. Of course, all anyone heard was that the dealers should "Organize (their) business and open up a school. This was again interpreted by any of his fickle fan base left that KRS wanted to make Drug Dealer High School, (c'mon now, Open your mind and put a book in it!!!).

Other than those two songs, from the intro where KRS plays the role of a DJ dying from lack of vinyl, (a BIG issue back in 92, believe me) to the final grand indictment of the IRS on "Who Are the Pimps?" KRS seems to have no end of material for fueling his fire. For the sudden prevalence and dominance of Gangsta Rap, (and most specifically NWA's Efil4zaggiN album), the fire of the singles "Duck Down" and "We In There" came out punching with lines like "I spit on your #1 hit" and "in jail in a pair of panties you'll look just stunning". For X-Clan and PRT there's "Build and Destroy" where KRS scientifically breaks both crews and his philosphy down with classic lines like "Too many teachers in the class spoil the school/after awhile you've got blabbering f*ckin fools" (ouch!!!). For society at large there's the second single "13 and Good", "Say Gal" and "Poisonous Products". Here Krs edutains the masses about our musical and societal problems with infidelity, morality, vanity... Basically holding up a mirror for us to look at and ask "What the f*ck is wrong with you?"

To explain all this "madness", KRS supplies "Question and Answer". Here KRS breaks down the point of the whole album. In a format similar to "Imma Break It Down" by Eazy-E, KRS interviews himself about various times in his career, his overall message, his own sincerity, and what he's doing to help. Sadly, this track was never a single so no one ever heard KRS explanation and most of the singles fell on what were becoming deaf ears.

Next come the biggest surprises of all. The first is the crazy allout breath control fest of "Like a Throttle". This is the ABSOLUTE BEST exercise in breath distribution ever. I've memorized every line in this album and am amazed to this day how KRS rips this sh*t!!!! The second big surprise comes in the form of a newly invigorated Freddie Foxxx. While Foxxx had appeared earlier on Kool G Rap's Wanted Dead or Alive track "Money In The Bank", it is on tracks "The Original Way" and "Ruff Ruff" where Freddie starts repping the sound that made him the commodity he became a short while later. His LOOOOOOOOOOONG verse on Ruff Ruff is one of his best ever and, if you ever meet me or KRS or Freddie and are so inclined to hear, has a great story behind it.

Finally, the results. After all that, the album didn't sell. In fact, it remains the worst selling BDP album of their carreer. The first album to receive a "Mic" in the source, (they were records before this album was reviewed), received a 4 1/2 rating. The label released 3 singles (all of which have near classic, must have extra tracks). They did three videos. Everything was in place except for the alienated fan base. Maybe they'd all jumped on the West Coast band wagon of Gangsterism and Mysogyny. More likely, they just weren't ready for the new Boom Bap. I figure when the revolution that Nas, Wu-Tang, Boot Camp Clik, and DITC was brought to the table, KRS had to feel like he was slapped. The Teacha and more importantly innovator was ahead of his time again. Pick it up so you can make it your time now.

(Guess that wasn't very brief, huh?)

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the SEX.......2005-03-30

Hal Lifson has done it again. This is a great trip down memory lane. I have so many visuals to the songs. Fran Jeffries singing Sex and the Single Girl....Edie Adams doing Big Spender with a cigar. Noxema and Take It All Off made me want to shave at the age of nine. And then there is Ann-Margret....is there anyone better? I say NO!!! Hal - this might sound corny - but Thanks For The Memories

5 out of 5 stars So much fun.......2005-03-07

This compilation reminded me how much fun music can be. The songs really seemed to raise my energy level and I found the whole CD a great workout accessory. I also enjoy it while relaxing. Some of the songs are familiar--others seemed more obscure but still catchy and definitely a reminder of the 60s.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and Fun.......2005-03-07

This is one of those CD's where you will scratch your head remembering tunes and commercials from the 60's. Some you will never have heard before, as they were never released in the states, others were minor hits, and then there are the blockbusters, such as "Goldfinger." "Girl Don't Tell Me," by Sandy Shaw, "Come and Stay With Me," by Jacke DeShannon, and the Bob Crewe stuff are particular standouts. Add to this mix these zany, sorta sexy commercials and voila, instant party classic for swingers of all age. I got a big kick out of this record. It is fun and amusing, and kinda sexy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Retro Music.......2005-03-04

I just got this CD as a birthday gift, and I love it. Not too much notalgia for me -- I'm only 26! -- but tons of great songs I'd never heard before. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes sixties music!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Romantic Music!.......2006-09-09

Like many others, I discovered this CD because of Sex in the City and LOVE it. If "Anna" is the song that appeals to you, you'll be absolutely swept away by Regina Carter's Paganini, which is exquisite and was also played on the show.

5 out of 5 stars Sex and the City.......2006-04-08

Looks like a good bit of people bought this for the same reason. Anna from the end episode "La Douleur Exquise!" of season 2 of Sex and the City. Aparently other songs from teh CD were in the show too.

I had to do a good bit of googling before I finally found out the song and artist. Listening to the whole song is no disappointment...

...however the other CDs advertized by this artest seem inordinanly different... I heard somewhere that this song was made because it did a better job of representing what the artists grandmother would have liked (who gave him everything she owned when she passed away simply because she loved the fact that he wanted to study music)...

Anyhow, the end result was a very good song.

5 out of 5 stars Quite brilliant!.......2005-09-09

Like a lot of other people, my intention in purchasing this album was to hear the 'Anna' track that I had heard and fallen for on a particular Sex and the City episode. Turns out the rest of the tracks are just as magnificent. I'd highly recommend this to anyone seeking some truly touching and pleasant sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-08-18

I first heard Gunnar Madsen on Sex and the City. I couldn't figure out what song it was, but I would play it over and over with Carrie's voice over and everything. Then I figured out it was "Anna" and a moment later bought this CD. It is better than I expected, only having heard "Anna." I play this CD all the time. It is perfect for when I'm reading, driving, cooking, doing anything. It's fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Chill music.......2006-03-19

I came across this CD at a music festival booth. I asked the vendor what would be good for massage, as I am a CMT. He popped The Dreaming into a CD and I listened for about 5 minutes before I was hooked.

Just about every one of the songs on the CD is amazing. An incredible mix of Middle Eastern rhythms, ethereal voices, and otherwordly ambience. People ask me all the time what I am playing when I use this CD for my massage sessions. I recently got a DJ friend into this music, and he's in the process of acquiring all 4 CDs by this duo.

My absolute favourite song is Dmaot Malach. When I listen to it with my boyfriend, it feels like we're a million miles away from the world.
We're major fans of Zero 7 and Sound Tribe Sector 9, and this CD is also with us on any trip or evening together.

5 out of 5 stars So Much More Than Expected.......2005-09-22

I had heard several tracks from this CD and was excited about receiving it, however, I was blown away by the fact that I LOVED EVERY TRACK on it. Not only from the point of view of a fan of fabulous music, but from the fact that I can use the music in the psychotherapeutic exercises I facilitate (Breathwork and tantra therapy). Every track is hugely evocative and transporting and the sequence of the tracks is perfect. Couldn't be happier about a music purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Subtle, melodic and definitely spiritual.......2005-02-22

One of our teacher at the yoga studio put this music during a class. Suddenly, everything was different, everything was flowing with grace and I would feel going deep into myself as the poses went.
But you don't need to practice yoga to like it. It's real music and the soul and the inspiration are there.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous album - one of my favorites.......2004-12-01

I found this CD in a yoga shop and bought it without knowing anything about it. it was one of the best purchases i made! The soft and melodic tracks, with sophisticated rhythms and beats underneath are perfect to play around the house, and especially when working. I'm a graphic designer, and we play this CD all the time in the studio. It really helps the creative flow...! And what's interesting is that i don't seem to be getting tired of it, i just keep discovering new layers and depth.
It's a wonderful CD, i highly recommend it.

Chicago-based Carlos Villalobos has created a romantic, danceable music made up of flamenco guitar and percussive overlays on La Esperanza or "The Hope." There are reminiscences of the Gipsy Kings in here but Villalobos makes a recognizable niche through these instrumentals that are introspective, urgent, and quietly uplifting all at the same time. The album dips where the Spanish flavor moves aside for a smooth jazz feel, but this is rare enough to boldly interrupt listenability. The appearance by singer Glenn Medeiros was enjoyable, but real highlights include "Gabriella's Lullaby" for its tropical melody and expert brush work (although it's unclear from the credits whether this was programmed or played by Villalobos himself), "Teaser" for its emotional vibrancy and percussion, and "Sueños," which dips into worldbeat waters. Overall, La Esperanza pleases well with energetic rhythms and vigorous expert guitar--not bad for an album whose biggest flaw is its jacket's rather dull, two-page list of grateful acknowledgements! --Karen Karleski

La Esperanza quickly became one of my favorite groups, especially when I want to listen to music to relax. Fantastic guitar playing! (I wish they had more CDs. If you have to choose between this one and Esperanza II, buy this one.) Gypsy Flame by Armik is in the same genre. You will enjoy listening to both.

I always play this CD when entertaining as it sets the ambience for parties where people want to just relax and talk and family and friends enjoy listening to it.

I had bought this album, some years ago and lost it, and just recently re purchased it, the music still today is timeless. I can honestly say that this is one of my favourite albums, the way the boys have mixed the sounds of flamenco and in some instances sounds of nature, especially in "Without You", its incredible. These guys are very talented musicians and am surprised there is not alot more of their stuff around, maybe thats what makes it all the more special and rare.

    5 out of 5 stars Great listening.......2006-11-04

Beautiful music and beautiful guitar pieces that are ideal for easy listening or latin dancing. My realtor friend wants to use to play in home tours. I told her where I got it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-07-25

I expected the Album to be good and was not dissapointed Enjoyed every bit of it.

5 out of 5 stars HOT EAR CANDY !.......2000-04-02

In July of 1999 this cd pulled me in...it is so seductive and bewitching. If a mans passion for a woman can be expressed through his guitar, this is what it sounds like. These tunes make you want to get up and dance or get down and dirty! My favorite songs are Teaser and Suenos..."te quiero"...This cd will ignite flames of desire and you'll need to hear it again and again!

    Album Description

The Necks' first album was released in 1989 in Australia and in 1996 on the label Private Music in the U.S. Right from the start, all the elements of the group's sound were firmly in place. The difference between Sex and the many other CDs they would record afterwards is the purity: The trio's hypnotic repetitive piece relies only on piano, bass, and drums; no electronics, extra keyboards, samples, or lengthy introduction. We would have to wait for Piano Bass Drums nine years later before they would come back to these essentials. Apart from the instrumentation, everything here is as one would expect from a Necks album. There is a single hour-long track, a two-bar motif repeated endlessly with minute variations "populating" it. Pianist Chris Abrahams remains self-effaced, keeping things very quiet. The light swing in Tony Buck's high-hat and Lloyd Swanton's bass give the piece a serious jazz feel - probably the reason why the group continued to be considered jazz, even though their music exists outside standard categories. It all works well, better than in Aquatic. The music here is not as communicative as in Piano Bass Drums, nor as mesmerizing as in Aether or as contagious as in Hanging Gardens. In the end, Sex stands in the Necks' discography as an average example of their work. One cannot point any specific problem, but they did better albums than this one

5 out of 5 stars Improvisation at it's most universal high.......2003-03-22

The moment this CD starts, your body relaxes and goes with the music. Rhythm, peace and soul are threaded through the notes to create a Jazz masterpiece. It's obvious The Necks were open and working their magic when they created this piece. It lasts 56 minutes and when it ends, you'll start it over and over again. It's a classic that you need in your music library.

Imagine a 56 minutes long piece, with a simple repeating melody, solid rhythm and short piano, strings, percussion magic trips into improvisation area. And it's not BORING ! ... For me, this is a great symbiosis of minimal and jazz music. MASTERPIECE

    5 out of 5 stars ambient jazz.......2001-04-15

This album is the musical equivalent of rain blurring a window.

5 out of 5 stars An Hour of PERFECT Music.......2001-03-20

Although named "Sex," the 56min song that takes up the whole CD is the perfect background music for a LOT more than just sex. It scores HUGE as dinner music, its calming enough to lull you to sleep too (I listen every night at bedtime), and even my parents LOVE it! This album/song is a MUST have for every household! DONT LET THE TITLE FOOL YA!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A little repetitive, but great........2006-03-22

The one I bought had a different cover, but the same tracklist. It's nice to hear extended versions, as well as previously unreleased tracks.

My only gripe with the score is the slight clipping on some of the tracks, and this is the case with every recording that I have heard.

This is a great score, and along with the solid performances by the actors, makes the film great.

5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME! MUSICAL PERFECTION! 10 STARS NOT ENOUGH........2005-04-06

Ennio Morricone's score for Cinema Paradiso is inspired. There is, in my opinion, no more perfectly-suited score for a film. I purchased the original DRG version as soon as possible after seeing the film. The great thing about this "newer" version is that is features additional tracks--the more the better, in this case. Melodic, sweet, nostalgic, and lyrical. The absolute best of Morricone, universally acclaimed, and among the favorites of the composer's admirers [and there are legions]. A wonderfully engaging listening experience apart from the film.

One of my favorite selections [that may not be an obvious choice for many] is the medley that underscores the movie-reel montage, where the composer takes the main theme and plays it in different styles, including dixieland, swing, and lush-romantic. The love theme, co-composed by the Maestro's son Andrea [then a budding composer], is almost too beautiful. This is music that sweeps you along, rising and falling at just the right moment.

This music has been widely emulated in commercials to evoke nostalgia for a time-gone-by. And, for good reason, it's just plain delightful.

ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL TOP 5 MORRICONE ON ANYONE'S LIST.

      5 out of 5 stars brilliant, premiere!.......2005-01-01

fast shipping from caiman_com, I ordered it during the Christmas holidays and received it right before the New Year's Eve. Far beyond my estimation! Besides, the most important thing is the soundtract. This CD has 23 tracts. I compared this one with another version: "Cinema Paradiso: Original Soundtrack Recording (1988 Film) [SOUNDTRACK]" and found out that the former one included all the tracts the latter had and much more than that. The price between these two version is very similar. That's why I bought this imported soundtract! The quality of the songs is perfect!

This CD is a great companian with the original movie! It will remind you of every sentimental scene in the film. Highly recommanded!
