Twitch [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This was Al Jourgensen's first full-length venture into the darker possibilities of electronic music. Harsh synthesizers, brutal drums and cynical lyrics defied the easy classification of "techno-dance" when this album was released in the mid'80s. The programming is proficient and creative, taking the limited sound technology of the time into new areas. "Just Like You" and "All Day" make early use of processed vocals and cryptic spoken-word fragments. In "We Believe" and "Over The Shoulder" Jourgensen renders ominously driving bass lines and metallic percussion to project pessimistic visions of a cold, technocratic society. The album's second half is dominated by a long drum & noise piece: an interesting experiment that would lead to intriguing sound collages on subsequent albums. --Mark McCleerey --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars My fav Jourgensen release.......2006-11-25

I have really liked alot of Jourgensen's cd's (Psalm 69, Linger Fickin Good, Rabies, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste) but for some reason I'm always drawn to Twitch when I'm in the mood for some old school goodies. I think its because the album is pure and doesn't try to be something its not, yet is a pioneer and a sign of things to come for the entire genre for over the next decade. If you like Twitch you'll probably also like Poesie Noire (Complicated - Compilated), Numb (Christmeister / Wasted Sky), Nine Inch Nails (Pretty Hate Machine), Frontline Assembly (State of Mind / Gashed Senses & Crossfire / The Initial Command), Skinny Puppy (Rabies, Bites, Remission)

5 out of 5 stars Love it or Hate it.........2006-02-04

This album has a special place in my heart. Forget what you know about present day Ministry and listen musically. Its very much an 80's sound, but even so it still was ahead of it's time.

This is one of my essential albums of all time. For the price of this album you would be a fool not to own a copy. I have this, and the 'Twitched' album version myself, and plan to buy both cd copies also. Some say that there's only a few good tracks on here, but i disagree fully. "Good" is a relative term based on different criteria, but i feel each and every track has something to offer, and has it's place on this album. I hesitate NOT one second to give it a 5 for that reason. I love this album!

3 out of 5 stars Solid release, doesn't really fit in a genre.......2005-12-23

I regrettedly have to give this album 3 stars due to inconsistency- the first 5 tracks are fantastic, classic Ministry pieces... but the remaining 4 generally lack anything interesting about them, and one of them is even a remix.

Contrary to other reviewers, I would say Twitch is not 'noisy', nor does it remind me too much of industrial in general. It's basically Al's take on synth pop, in other words it's angrier and has nothing to do with romance. The songs are VERY catchy, but are quite political and rebellious at the same time. No screaming here, just Al's raspy whisper, sometimes used in melodic fashion. There are some similarities in the melodies to Front 242 or the like, but the production style is very different from those bands, more along the lines of later Ministry (LORAH) as far as drum/synth sounds.

"We Believe" is a darker song, shows early on Al's penchant for ominous atmosphere. I'd say "All Day" is the highpoint of the album, complex, great lyrics, catchy as hell, fun to sing along to. "The Angel" has that 80's radio single feel to it, and even has female guest vocals. Very well constructed, again interesting lyrics. "Over the Shoulder" and "Just Like You" are great dance floor material. "My Posession" has some more good lyrics but very little going on musically. "Where you at now?/Crash and Burn/Twitch" is 12 minutes. Seems like Al messing around with a few beats and synths, not much point to it, not many vocals. Lacks again something interesting to latch onto. The "Over the Shoulder" remix is too much like the original, a common problem with remixes. "Isle of Man" is a simple melody repeated, about a future Earth destroyed by pollution, but really sounds cheesy ("Can't clean it, I mean it!")... Ministry would get successfully ominous later. I agree with someone else that it sounds like pirates would sing it.

In conclusion, Twitch has 5 great Ministry songs, so if you can get it for cheap, buy it. If not, download those songs, they're fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars noise personified.......2005-11-17

i would have given this album 4 stars except that this album is extremely influential.i can't believe how much this sounds like early Nine Inch Nails.i love NIN just as much as anybody but Trent should really be paying Al some royalties.this is a great album for those who like their music experimental and noisy.i wouldn't suggest this to any country music fans that's for sure, eventhough i do like some of the classic troubadors like willie, johnny and waylon.as a big fan of ministry i love this album and like that it's his first full-length.for those ministry fans who are used to the harder guitar-oriented stuff this might come as a little suprise as it is much more 80's-tinged and electronic, far from N.W.O.,and Al's voice is less harsh during this time period as well.trust me,i am not taking anything away from that because i like the second half just as much.good stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Near perfect.......2005-09-02

This is an album that I use to play a lot on Friday nights when my friends and I were on our way to a show, or the city, or just for a good time out. It gets you pumped up. I think it's a really solid piece of work, near perfect. It's industrial, yet it's not. Whatever it is classified under, the album works. It is my favorite Ministry release. As far as the other Ministry releases, I much prefer the earlier to the recent.

5 out of 5 stars No Idea.......2006-01-28

You people have no idea what you are talking about. The Stryder was a very influential band, even though not many have heard of them. Bands like Taking Back Sunday, and Brand New would likely not exist if it wasn't for the Stryder. The reason that this cd sounds different is because their drummer is the guitar player/singer and they have a different drummer. (Who is incredible.)

1 out of 5 stars Meh........2006-01-21

The Stryder tries really hard to be heartfelt and intense, but the effect here is like a B-grade boyband-singer fronting an amateur indie-pop outfit. I almost feel embarassed for them. The overwrought vocal inflections make up for the hollow melodies as effectively as too much cheap cologne masks bad body odor. Lyrically, the Stryder achieves what the average 8th grade teenybopper kid would in her diary, complete with cloying pseudo emo/R&B pop style please-come-back yearnings (Missing Without You) and antiauthority frustrations, complete with the obligatory I'm-so-defiant f-bomb (Crook).
The fairly natural and un-slick production on this album is well suited to the style of guitar/bass/drum interaction, however the vocals could use some reverb and/or slight mixing down, as they tend to be rather stark and two-dimensional and could benefit from closer context to the band. The few interesting guitar lines sprinkled throughout tend to be mixed too low to interact effectively within the mix, and the arrangements and chord progressions have the potential for being more engaging and imaginative than they are. A cool but ultimately too-long drum solo at the end of the closing track, Circular Highway, has more unction and charisma than the entire album, which, save for a desperate few brief moments, has little power in any respect.

2 out of 5 stars Different Singer.......2005-11-19

I loved the Stryder's first album 'Masquerade in the ...', but this doesnt even sound like the same band. I had read somewhere they had a new singer for this album, and because of that they just lost that distinct sound. I was very disapointed in this album.

5 out of 5 stars Jungle City Twitch.......2004-11-13

Jungle City Twitch is a great album by the Stryder. The album is full of beautiful melodies and visuals. Peter Toh's voice is melodic and almost nostalgic of Jeff Buckley. Scottie Redix's voice is full of soul. This album reminds me of a modern day Pet Sounds on account of its creativity and its uniqueness. Only after listening to the album a few times I find myself humming along to all the catchy songs.

1 out of 5 stars Mmmmmmm.......talented.......2004-06-15

Wow, these guys sure are amazing. From the singers whiny, pre-pubescent voice, to their shallow, immature, less complicated than limp bizkit's lyrics, I don't see how they even got a record deal! Even, and I don't use this phrase often, Good Charlotte is better than them! If you would like to hear some actually decent music, try sampling anything from Thrice, Lostprophets, Letter Kills, or Flaw.

4 out of 5 stars Percussive weirdness.......2004-07-03

I've always loved the percussive elements found in most kinds of music, especially in that of electronic, dance and rap music. This is a very percussive driven record, but it's also highly expressive, zany, and fun.

Compositions such as the aptly-named "Twitch" and the multi-sectioned title track are like the soundtracks to cartoons. Each is filled with potential directions without lingering on any one idea for too long (especially in "Twitch"). Among many other audial oddities you'll hear bursts of radio stactic bump up aginst sounds of dominoes falling and mousetraps snapping (Pateras documents some of his sound sources in the liner notes to this CD).

"Meshanitsa", which employs piano and a computerized voice, is like a disfunctional conversation between two people where both particapants has something to say and has to say it at the same time. It's a fascinating duel that's cut by brief snippets of silence after each spat.

The only misfire on this collection is "Inevitable Plasma", only because I personally find this kind of freeform noodling on a solo piano too tedious for my taste.

Overall, this has been one of the more satisying releases that I've come across from the Tzadik label's Composer Series.

5 out of 5 stars Great melodic rock.......2006-03-10

The third release from Aldo Nova was a departure of sorts from his first two CD's. Pressured from his record company, he brought in a number of outside writers and musicians for the music here, and recorded what presumably was to be a more commercially friendly release. Although Aldo Nova later apprears to have been displeased with TWITCH, I found this to be superb. Why it was not a monster seller is a mystery to me.

TWITCH leans very heavily on keyboards - even more so than his previous release SUBJECT. That's not necessarily a bad thing as long as they are a match for his wonderful guitar playing - which in my opinion it certainly was. TWITCH is also more mellow than the significantly harder rocking SUBJECT from two years earlier. Musically, this kind of reminds me of what one might get from a musical cross of April Wine and Dokken.

Aldo Nova's singing on TWITCH is not very different from his first two releases - he has a mellow voice and style that is largely devoid of the more soaring vocals from guys like Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson when they just cut loose into the microphones - Aldo's style of singing reminds me more of a mellowed out Don Dokken.

TWITCH begins with "Tonight (Lift Me Up)" - a mid-tempo mellow rocker with a memorable guitar solo. This song was very radio frienly and could have been a hit.

"Rumors Of You" is a ballad with a female guest sharing vocal duties. A decent tune - sounds like it could apprear on adult comtemporary radio.

"Surrender Your Heart" is one of my favorite ballads. This too has a female guest on vocals. It's not exactly a power ballad - it's too soft on the electric guitars for that - but the keyboards are awesome and these lyrics for the love of your life make this one a winner.

"If Looks Could Kill" and "Stay" are both melodic rockers that have a pop-metal feel to it. Sort of like early Bon Jovi. "Heartless" and "Fallen Angel" are the two fast rockers on here. Although loaded with keyboards, both have some fancy guitar work. TWITCH closes with the instrumental title-track. All told, I think a great effort under record company pressure for a different writing and recording approach from the first to CD's.

This out-of-print release is now rare and very hard to find, so if you ever see for under - say, $20, I advise you to grab it as you never know when you'll see it again. Ditto for SUBJECT, BLOOD ON THE BRICK'S, and NOVA'S DREAM.

4 out of 5 stars Aldo Nova may have hated this album, but I love it.......2005-12-21

What's the 4-1-1?
Canadian guitar sensation Aldo Nova was riding high with the release of his 1982 self-titled debut. Propelled by the infectious pop-metal classic "Fantasy," Aldo Nova went on to sell over two million copies. Aldo's 1983 follow-up Subject: Aldo Nova didn't fare quite so well. Executives at his record label were disappointed with the fact that Nova chose to do something different, rather than the same old same old. Subject: Aldo Nova was sort-of a concept album that wasn't necessarily bad, but not what you'd expect after hearing his debut.

For Aldo Nova's third album Twitch, the record company took the reigns and forced Nova to rely on outside songwriters and incorporate a more polished, keyboard heavy sound. Aldo has gone on record denouncing the whole Twitch experience, but fans of melodic rock beg to differ. It may have sucked for Nova not to have had as much control of the album, but the final product wasn't bad at all. With so many pros working on it, how could it be bad?

Get your dark shades, florescent t-shirts, a white sport coats ready because "Tonight (Lift Me Up)" will take you right back to the days of Miami Vice with its pulsing keyboard changes and fuzzy guitar power chords. The chorus hook is undeniable. Nova pours out plenty of emotions on "Rumors of You." I could see this track actually working for Rod Stewart at the time. "If Looks Could Kill" pushes the keyboards to the background and puts Nova's guitar skills on prominent display. Multi-layered vocal harmonies dominate the chorus.

Its more flashy guitar runs for Nova on "Heartless," as he lets out his frustrations about his latest love. The track has another memorable chorus that could easily pass for an eighties movie theme. The keyboard tones on "Fallen Angel" bounce similar to the way they did on Bon Jovi's "Runaway." However, it's the drums and vocals that a highlighted throughout. "Lay Your Love on Me" is drenched in some of the heaviest riffs on the album. Nova employs another Bon Jovi technique by using the Sambora voice tube (maybe that's why Nova's next album was on Jon's record label?).

Sadly, Twitch turned out to be a commercial flop. It didn't even place on the charts. Of course one has to wonder, if the artist doesn't support it, how far is it going to go anyway. Nova was able to get out of his contract with Portrait by the late eighties, but disappeared on the face of the Earth. He did reemerge in 1992 with the release of Blood on the Bricks, and again in 1997 with Nova's Dream. But don't cry for Aldo, he went on to write and produce for many famous and successful artists.

The Verdict
Aldo Nova may have hated this album, but I love it. If you're a fan of eighties melodic rock loaded with keyboards, guitars, and passionate vocals, you'll love it too.

5 out of 5 stars HIS BEST YET!!.......2004-10-16

AS I HAVE SAID BEFORE IN MY OTHER REVIEW OF ALDO'S "SUBJECT", HE IS A TRUE MUSICAL GENUIS. AFTER LISTENING TO "TWITCH", IT CAN ONLY BE SAID THAT THIS WORK OF ART IS HIS BEST ONE YET!
IHAD THIS GEM ON VINYL,NOW YEARS LATER I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT I OWN IT ON CD. HIS MUSICAL BRILLIANCE IS UNIQUE. I WILL CONTINUE TO ADMIRE ALDO NOVA FOR MANY MORE YEARS TO COME.
I LOOK FORWARD TO MAYBE SOMEDAY ANOTHER MUSICAL MASTERPIECE FROM ALDO NOVA. BUT FOR NOW, ALL OF HIS GEMS WILL NEVER BECOME JUST MEMORIES.
LISTEN TO ALL OF ALDO'S WONDEROUS GIFTS, AND YOU TOO WILL HAVE TO AGREE THAT ARTISTS SUCH AS HE ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.

5 out of 5 stars Nova's greatest work to date.......2003-04-08

Twitch (1985). Aldo Nova's third studio album.

Back in 1982, a Canadian rock musician who goes by the name Aldo Nova, showed up on the music scene with a single popular hit 'Fantasy'. This anthem was hailed by many to be a classic radio rock staple and the future showed commercial promise for the lone hard rocker. Unfortunately, this was not to be. The debut album (1982) failed to really launch Nova's career, and so he disappeared into obscurity in the eyes of the world. However, under the radar, Nova continued to make music with his semi-prog album, Subject(1983). He did receive some help by a better known rock artist and best friend Jon Bon Jovi in many areas of album production. After two fairly hard rock albums, he decided to hire several session musicians and their third outing would take on more of a lighter approach.

Twitch(1985) took two years for Nova to make, but the longer time in the studio paid off with perhaps his strongest set of songs he's ever made. Instead of the faster, pompous hard rock jaunts found on previous albums, Twitch concentrates on a pop/rock melodic delivery both vocally and instrumentally, through the use of guitar, keyboards, and guest female vocals in various songs.

'Tonight (Lift Me Up)' and 'Rumours Of You' both offer the perfect touching, mellow-paced introduction to the ambient mood of Twitch. Following it is the excellent ballad 'Surrender Your Heart'. From here, Twitch brings back the edgier element of earlier albums with the rockers 'If Looks Could Kill' and 'Heartless'. It calms down again with the optimistic track 'Long Hot Summer'. 'Fallen Angel' is my personal favorite track because it combines the faster harder pace of Nova's earlier work with an ethereal melodic soundscape, making it one of the best songs of his career. 'Stay' is another good ballad that follows. The only track I thought seemed like filler was 'Lay Your Love On Me' because it lacked the emotional impact of other songs. Topping off the album is the instrumental title track which, although a bit generic, has some good guitar riffs towards the end.

Twitch, even though never heard by the general public mass majority, is a phenomenal collection of punchy rockers and beautiful ballads that could please most anybody. Given the chance, these songs could have contended with the likes of Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, and Hysteria era Def Leppard. 5 stars for solid musicianship, production, and musical execution by Nova and the various session-artists. If you like 80s melodic pop/hard rock and come in with an open mind, you will not be disappointed. This masterpiece has been hiding in the shadows for far too long. It's about time that someone gave it a spin. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Headed for Stardom.......2007-02-13

I stumbled upon this group accidentally and then checked out all their songs on their website. When I finally got the CD, I didn't stop listening to it for about a month straight and it's still in heavy rotation on my iPod. Every song is amazing in its own way with great lyrics and harmonies. "Take Me Down" has to be one of the sexiest songs ever written. I saw them play at a local club and the place was bursting at the seams! Chris Snyder, the lead singer, not only has a strong, amazing voice, but she's beautiful, funny, sexy, and proudly out (go, girl!) I'm just waiting for this group to hit it big ... and they will. I'll get to say I saw them when they were still a hot local SF band but unfortunately, then my days of a $5 cover for a blow-the-roof-off-the-place-with-a-three-hour-show will be over.

5 out of 5 stars Great new band with a classic sound.......2004-04-17

Stumbled (almost literally) upon this band while in San Fran for the weekend. Absolutely amazing! Great music - upbeat, original, and fun. Classic guitar driven rock led by Chris Snyder's incredible lead vocals. The band has great chemistry and charisma which shines through in their live performances.
