Porno for Pyros
Editorial Reviews

The guitars aren't so meaty, the musical textures are much quirkier, yet this is the fourth Jane's Addiction album in all but name. The unique and still baffling Perry Farrell remains the real addiction, of course, and his fans will eat up these alternatively bemused ("Pets") and scarifying ("Packin' .25") tracks. --Jeff Bateman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Amazing- Doesn't need "Ex-Jane's Addiction" tag .......2007-04-25
This band/record is so nice it's ridiculous to compare it to Jane's Addiction and just ignorant to slam it for not sounding like JA. Jane's Addiction is one great thing-this is another. Totally different atmosphere and sound. The members(Vocalist/Percussion)from JA sound better than ever with added dynamics/nuances but it's Dave Navarro's "replacement"(ha-ha)Peter DiStefano that turns in one of the most jaw dropping guitar performances put to record. Very psychodelic with tons of feeling. I wouldn't call PFP's songwriting on this album more mellow or laid back than JA like others do(don't forget all the JA softies). It's def slower on the whole but no less intense...just in a murkier more hypnotic way. The more I hear this record the more I remember the massive quality.
A great album........2006-01-20
I only give 4 stars because only the first three Jane's Addiction albums deserves five stars (being of "classic" status). I assume that this would have been the fourth Jane's album if they did not make the mistake of breaking up. This is a great album and should be in every Jane's Addiction fan's collection. The music is really that good and, like Jane's Addiction, that original. Listen to the excerpts and judge for yourself. I doubt you will be sorry. Unfortunatly the following Porno For Pyros album lacked the luster that the debut had.
Start to Finish.......2005-07-21
PFP may be better than Jane's Addiction. From Sadness to Orgasm this is very entertaining. So the songwriting sucks, Perry Farrell makes it sound good. Highly recommended for anyone who can think. Also, Perry Farrell happened to be guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight and he performed Pets With Peter DiStefano for the closing I stayed up just to watch it.
Such an amazing record!.......2005-05-17
Of COURSE Jane's Addiction was the best, but this 1st P4P album is beautiful. I like it so much because of several elements:
1) Of course Stephen Perkins' drumming is SO wicked and has more exotic percussion than when he played with JA (ie- more finesse, less rock), 2) Peter DiStefano's electric guitar style is so ethereal, he creates amazing soundscapes, BUT also has amazing funk appeal.
3)Martyn LeNoble on bass is such a perfect fit because he drops a Spanish, majestic groove to the rhythm section.. and of course
4) Perry's voice sounds great, his lyrics are very poetic/beautiful, his harmonica playing is actually a good thing and sparse, and his whistling is in perfect spots!
To sum up, this is an awesome album of ethereal funk infused rock, with Spanish majestic feel.
Good S---t.......2005-03-03
For me, it's the memories that make this album worth listening to. I remember when 'Pets' was in the Buzz Bin on MTV,and when the video appeared during the 'Washing The Dog' episode. That was summer of 93 I do believe, back when the world was so much simpler, before I even had my driver's license....ahh, the memories. And it's cool catchy offbeat weird Perry Farrell greatness too, so pick it up.

I will grow on you!.......2006-03-01
Perry Farrell is without doubt the Bowie of my generation. Each new recording moving into a different direction.
Don't expect a replica of the first Porno's CD. This album definately takes time to grow on you, but it is worth it.
In a era of throw away fabricated pop, Perry remains an artist true to himself.
Very Disappointing.......2006-01-28
For any music lovers out there who are late learning about the wonder that is Jane's Addiciton and subsequently Porno For Pyros, avoid this album. All the positive reviews are very misleading in my opinion. Anyone who likes the band will of course be curious to hear this album. I don't discourage you. I just want to save you the frustration and disappointment that I experienced with this. I LOVED Jane's in the heyday, and still do, and the first PFP album is killer. This last gasp for PFP was created over a period of a few years while the strung out band members escaped for surfing trips to try to get clean. They didn't have much focus or drive on this one. I have had this cd for years and really WANTED to like it. It's just boring. Tahitian Moon is ok for a few listens....
Porno For Pyros - Good God's Urge.......2005-10-11
This album is brilliant. Yes, it's that simple. Highlights include tracks 5 and 10. They're the more mellow tunes. The rest is also pure brilliance though and shows a diverse range of musical genres and performance levels throughout. I'd also go as far to say that the feel of this album is quite surreal. There's twists and turns and up and downs that will always surprise with each listen. It's like a tripped out roller-coaster ride that you'll rarely tire of.
Lastly, I reckon this album is far more musical than anything I've heard from Farrell's previous projects (e.g. compared to earlier tracks from Jane's Addiction). Thus, a person who appreciates more instrumental pieces, the usual chilling and sweet vocals from Perry, and experimental beats won't be disappointed with this album. Just forget about expecting coarse rock guitar and drums though. And yes that's a good thing. Turn it up!
Porno For Pyros - 'Good God's Urge' (Warner Brothers).......2004-11-21
This is the band's second and final release and it's a bid more mellower than their self-titled debut. But,rest assure it's still pretty cool sounding.I'll say this much, that I can truly understand as to why Jane's Addiction disbanded when they did.Porno For Pyros is DEFINITELY a step forward for vocalist Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins. The best two tracks here are "Tahitian Moon" and "Thick Of It All".A couple of others that sort of grabbed my attention are "Dogs Rule The Night","Freeway" and "Ball Eyes".Just an all around good stylish alternative rock CD.
I couldn't give this CD away fast enough.......2003-07-25
This CD is rubbish...No matter how I tried to "understand" or get into this album I never got it...It's like one, boring 45-minute song...What's sad, too, is the new Jane's Addiction CD "Strays" is striking me the same way...Maybe I've just out-grown these guys...

One can't help but wonder what the other members of both Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros think of their erstwhile lead vocalist repackaging their hits into a collection bearing only his name. In that respect, the whole thing is a bit curious, but once you get past the presentation and into the music, it really becomes irrelevant. Particularly since the 16-song collection kicks off with two new tunes--the electronica-meets-rock jam of the title track and Farrell's drum & bass workout of the Led Zeppelin chestnut "Whole Lotta Love"--that clearly show it is indeed Farrell's genius that drove both his previous bands. The rest of the material, rather than just being a straight hits compilation, features some rarities and remixes ("Been Caught Stealing," Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love") alongside FM staples such as "Jane Says," "Stop," and "Pets." Rev is a complete musical package that freely ranges from dance music to hard rock to funk to psychedelia, all bearing the unmistakable stamp of Farrell's soaring, pixielike voice. --Adem Tepedelen

question.......2006-05-24
I really don't have anything new to add here. I agree with most of the reviewers here. Well, except for Daniel.
I actually want to ask a question and I'm hoping someone here knows. Where does the song "Tonight" come from? Is there another album I can find it on? If so, is it any good?
Umm.........2006-03-25
I'm sorry, but I thought this album was forgettable crap. It is guitar noises and screaming. If you're looking for anything melodic, Rev is not the place to find it. I fancy myself a fan of many types of music, and I am not very picky about what I listen to, but when I sat down and heard this album all the way through, I couldn't find one song I liked. Waste of my time.
Worth the .......2004-12-15
i'm surprised nobody else mentions the fabulous cover of the beautiful song from west side story! i've loved that song since i bought the "pets" single on tape on which it was the b side... unfortunately tapes wear out and i was without this wonderful song for a couple years. and then this collection came out... it is vital for any perry farrell fan to have and i've been a farrellian for years now!
in response to mick selnt's advice to buy "strays" and if it grows on you buy "ritual" - NO FRICKIN' WAY! i don't know how long that guy's been listening to either porno for pyros or janes... but buying "strays" is absolutely NOT the first step! either "ritual" or "nothing's shocking" will do... if you like those buy the triple xxx record and "kettle whistle" and the porno for pyros albums... and last but not least buy "strays", although it'll prove mediocre to the rest of the collection.
no offense, seriously mick... i'm sure you're a nice guy and i don't mean to be condascending... i'm real sorry to be so harsh: [...]
An interesting collection.......2004-10-15
as everyone else said...its not new material but its a great collection that all Perry Farrell fans must have.
Not bad but lacking and misleading.......2003-12-10
First off the two 'new' tracks by just Perry, in a word, suck. I know it's only because I don't enjoy electronic music but I hate seeing Whole Lotta Love desecrated like this. Actually, the song Rev is a bit better but I usually just skip it and move on. Well this albums has a lot of great songs on it, notably the exellent remix of Been Caught Stealing and Stop as well as a VERY brief overview of both Jane's and P for P's existances. This was the first album I bought with Perry and I actually thought that Mountain Song and Summertime Rolls were some of Jane's Addiction's best songs! How wrong I was, (the best is 3 Days, for the record) but that's the impression you get from this supposedly 'greatest hits'. Obviously there are no new Jane's songs on here as they hadn't yet regrouped for Stray yet. The two soundtrack covers at the end are good for fans, very rocking and great songs to begin with. If you want to get into these two bands I suggest you just go out and buy Strays and then, if it grows on you, Ritual de lo Habitual. This one's kind of lacking for newcomers and sort of redundant for those that have the albums.

essential for the P*rno for Pyros completist.......2007-04-28
To provide an honest review of "Sadness," I must first confess that I thought the corresponding LP was Perry Farrell's strongest and one of the decade's best rock albums. Along these lines, "Sadness" is a satisfying maxi-single. You already have the title track on the main album, so there are no surprises there. 'A Little Sadness' is probably the most rewarding track. It is an acoustic version of 'Sadness.' The remaining three tracks are live. 'Cook the Rice' is a quality acoustic song. While 'Pets' isn't as interesting as the version played at Woodstock '94, it is well performed. 'Pete's Dad' may not only be the most unusual song on the disc but the most unexpected tune by P*rno for Pyros. It is a self described Christmas song with themes of multiculturalism and miraculous healing. As with much of the maxi-single, it has a softer tone that foreshadows "Good God's Urge" and notes a departure from the band's hard rockin' 1993 debut. At the time of review, there were many reasonably priced copies (under $5) for sale through Amazon's marketplace sellers. Given the quality of music and the availability of affordable copies, "Sadness" is essential for the P*rno for Pyros completist.
