Conguero Poncho Sanchez is one of the movers and shakers in Latin jazz. But while growing up in the 1960s, he was obsessed with the classic Stax and Motown sounds, and this influence peeks out from time to time in his music. Never more so than on Out Of Sight!, which actually functions as a tribute to his hero James Brown. Here Sanchez makes it funky with such soulful luminaries as Billy Preston, Ray Charles (who sings his classic "Mary Ann"), Sam Moore (of Sam And Dave fame), and Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. Suffice it to say, Sanchez's band and guests dig a groove deep enough to make the Godfather proud. They don't rely on the hits either; instead, choosing some lesser-known 1960s boogaloo gems and Brown jams, as well as some groovy new originals. Sanchez is surprisingly impressive on vocals here, but it's the tight and funky Latin arrangements that make this so super bad. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
Truly Out of Sight.......2006-01-14
When I heard that Poncho Sanchez, once dubbed the King of Latin Jazz, was pulling together a collaborative work with the likes of Ray Charles, I knew that I had to have this album. And it has not disappointed.
The arrangements and composition are amazing as usual. The music jives with the salsa and excitement you expect from Poncho Sanchez. But what makes this album unique is the throw back to the old time singers who pull together dance tunes with the feel of the 50s and 60s with the rhythm of today's hot latin grooves.
This is an album that is a must buy for folks who love Poncho Sanchez and love fusion music.
Poncho is the Man.......2004-09-02
I really enjoyed this CD. Some funky boogaloo and good Latin standards. The enhanced track that plays on your PC is fantastic! A mixture of performance and interview with Poncho. Poncho's cover of James Brown's Out of Sight is really good. The tribute to Mongo Santamaria is a great track as well. This is not my favorite Poncho Sanchez CD but it is a great CD to add to your collection.
A powerful new album.......2003-10-27
This Latin-Jazz old-timer cuts loose with a tight, funky, soul-drenched set of good old-fashioned rhythm & boogaloo... Sanchez style! On the opening track, a muscular version of "One Mint Julep," you may find yourself thinking, "Man -- that guy sounds *just like* Ray Charles!" Well, surprise -- it is! Brother Ray kicks in on a couple of tunes, and is joined on the disc by several other high-power guest artists, including Fred Wesley of the JB Horns, Billy Preston, jazzman Pee Wee Ellis, and Afro-Cuban master percussionist Francisco Aguabella, who bangs a mean bata drum on "El Tambor Del Mongo." It's a lively, earthy set that avoids, for the most part the pitfalls of the jazzier side of the Latin/Jazz equation. If you're a fan, this disc will knock your socks off!
PS - the sound on the SACD is pretty nice... and I just own a regular old CD player.
Tight Set.......2003-10-19
Poncho Sanchez is truly a Cat that knows to Blned styles together&Create His own Fusion&Vibe.Bringing Latin&RB Grooves together as one is exactly what He does on this Project.the arrangements build up&Just come at you&Never let you go from start to finish.great to Hear Brother Ray Charles on board with this set.a very tight set.
PONCHO IS THE MAN!.......2003-09-22
I believe that Poncho has a very good and musical carrer as a conguero and bandleader. He has the ability to mix and combine that Latin and R&B essence of music in this CD. I believe that we can expect a lot from Poncho in the coming years. God Bless the man. He is the Total Man. There is no one the world better him. Well no one living is better then Poncho. LONG LIVE PONCHO SANCHEZ. LONG LIVE LATIN JAZZ AND SALSA!!!!!!!!!

Early in Out of Sight, Steven Soderbergh's take on Elmore Leonard's novel, charming ex-con Jack Foley (George Clooney) lies in a car trunk with lovely federal marshal Karen Cisco (Jennifer Lopez). An organ-and-bass vamp underscores the seductive nature of the close confines, but the music stops cold to allow a police siren to pass by. When the siren fades the vamp returns, underscoring the tension--and the humor. Such punctuation typifies composer David Holmes's role: creating jazzy cues that open scenes like chapter headings. The soundtrack album contains nine of these cues and a handful of scene-setting pop tunes (Isley Brothers, Dean Martin, and others). The inclusion of movie dialogue recalls Holmes's solo album Let's Get Killed, which set snippets of New York street talk to edgy electronica. --Marc Weidenbaum
Customer Reviews:
Lines from the film don't match music, distract........2004-01-28
Look no further than the Tub Scene track. This hot, sexy scene has great music. Why would you buy this CD if you didn't like this track? At the end of this piece, the last thirty seconds are overlaid with dialogue from another scene entirely. Remember when J.Lo has to listen to that creep talk about Toughie the dog and how he would tussle with her, and give her a bone? Those sick lines are the last thirty seconds of the Tub Scene track.
The other tracks are also affected. Hopefully David Holmes will one day offer a pure version of this album for download from online-only music stores, since producing a second CD would cost too much.
Excellent!.......2003-06-12
The soundtrack combines David Holmes smooth grooves with audio surprises from the movie. Listening to the music during the movie makes a great script, good acting and cool editing complete. However, when unaccompanied by the visuals, you can concentrate just on the terrific music. In particular, I had never noticed the flamenco guitar featured throughout the soundtrack. For David Holmes fans, or just fans of the movie, you will not be disappointed!
Wonderful, brilliant, frustrating, annoying.......2003-02-14
I've already seen the movie, big guy.
I always end up with mixed feelings about David Holmes' stuff. He creates wonderful music, and then screws it up by making it second fiddle to whatever droll dialogue he feels like throwing in. It was annoying on Let's Get Killed, where his collection of "New York's Most Neurotic" undermines the whole thing. The Ocean's 11 soundtrack was totally obscured by the movie's dialogue.
Critics need to stand up and call Holmes on this for the silly immaturity that it is. Soundtracks to Tarantino albums used to frustrate me because of all the chattering, but at least they were distinct tracks you could skip if you weren't in the mood. With Holmes, up to two minutes of a groove will be taken up by dialogue from a movie you've already seen. It's not clever, it doesn't enhance the music, it's distracting, and luckily the thing was on sale when I bought it, because I think it is WAY overpriced for only 45 minutes of music.
Holme's, it's cool to use movie dialogue as a punctuation mark; Rhames' "Let's go to Detroit" line is a great intro to the Isley Bros', Fight the Power (especially since they were with Motown for a while). But ENOUGH already! Your brilliance is being undermined by this George Clooney fetish. We want your music to shape OUR reality, not to help us relive a movie.
Enough complaining. Apart from that, the vamps on this album are superb. His selection of a couple of Isley Bros best tunes are perfect and the Dean's "Kick in the Head" is a great complement. Holme's simply has talent and creativity to burn, which makes me want to keep buying his stuff, despite all the frustrating stuff he does with movie dialogue. The "Tub Scene" tune is perfect - absolutely perfect.
Perhaps I should've asked for the MUSICtrack!.......2003-01-27
I must say that if I want to hear the dialog of the movie, I rent the movie!
If I want to hear the music in the movie, I buy the soundtrack! Unfortunately, that's not what David Holmes had in mind, and there is way too much of the actual script laid over the songs on this soundtrack. Not that it's bad dialog...this is an excellent movie. But if you just want to get into the music, don't get this soundtrack. In fact, the songs and the dialog don't even match the chronology of the movie. For example, "It's your Thing" did NOT play during the robbery scene.
Great music, though....I think I'll go look for the Isley Brothers on CD now.
outta sight outta mind.......2002-03-21
The soundtrack for OUT OF SIGHT is an excellent companion to the excellent movie. David Holmes is brilliant, and has greated one of the best soundtracks ever, in my humble opinion. The styles range from lounge to jazz, funk to old classics. Such classics include Dean Martin's "Aint That A Kick In The Head", The Isley Brothers "Its Your Thing" and "Fight The Power Pt 2", and Mumbo's "Watermelon Man". The rest are strickly intrumental tracks, but they are exciting to listen to and really suit the movie, and if you haven't seen the movie, I reccomend you do. On many tracks there is dialogue from the movie, which I think is an added bonus and sets the mood for the songs. Overall its a good buy and well worth it, you'll be listening to it over and over!

Best Vibrations Collection Ever.......2007-01-18
The Vibrations were a popular group during the late 5o's and early 60's. These 5 men had a comparable sound to the Temptations or the Dells but what set them apart from all the rest was their on stage comedy routines and acrobatic dancing performances. The Vibrations were the ONLY group who could hold a candle to Little Anthony and the Imperials stage presentation. The Temptations, The Miracles, Spaniels, Dells, Flamingos and all the rest could only look on with shock and awe at the Vibrations. This collection consists mostly of the Vibrations Chess recordings. The remastering is excellent and most of their best material is available here for the first time ever.

Free Spirit.......2007-05-02
This is such an important recording, here you have a group of young players who never gave it a second thought just to do something they just did it. It was a carefree time this group features Larry Coryell on guitar, Jim Pepper on sax, Bob Moses on drums, Chris Hill on bass and Columbus Baker on 2nd guitar. Produced by Bob Thiele who must have held on for dear life. Flashes of psych sounds are found on this album. Larry plays sitar on I'm gonna be free. But this is not a pop album nor is it mainstream. It really provided the basis for fusion found in the early 1970's , Bitch Brew and Nucleus from the UK kind of music. The cd reissue features detailed notes and photos. I was pretty surprised they could dig that much material up on this group. The remastering sounds very good given the age of the material. Fans of late sixties music will enjoy this music as well as folks into early fusion music.

Simply Masterful.......2003-08-09
The first song I ever heard by these guys was "Joan of Arc". On the first listen, I was completely, 100% hooked. The songwriting, the music, everything and I mean, EVERYTHING, was just perfect. I just had to have everything I could find by this band. I went on a downloading spree, and then bought the record a few weeks later.
I was not dissipointed. Everything this band has done, every single song, is quality. Even the cover art of this album is cool.
While all of the songs here are good, the highlights are:
-The Scene's Out of Sight - An absoutely amazing song.
-Folding Chair - The songwriting in this song can't be beat.
-Shining Jewels - Piano. Beat Piano.
-Joan of Arc - Simply one of the most amazing songs ever.
-John J. Suillivan - A very interesting song. And great.
Just. Buy this. Its timeless and incredible.
Their next one might really be outta sight.......2003-03-24
Melodic power pop with a singer whose adenoidal vocals are an acquired taste. As an album, "The Scene's Out of Sight" is bouncy, kinda fun, and unafraid of swapping spazzy energy for melancholic introspection. Actionslacks will never light the world on fire, but they're good enough that someone, somewhere, might cherish them as a favorite band.
Indie Rock at its best.......2002-11-06
I first heard of Actionslacks back in the day of the now infamous Napster...I downloaded a few songs and discovered that I needed this cd. That was a year or two ago..perhaps three,...this cd has remained one of my favorites and I find myself going back to it at least a few times a week. The songs are all wonderful, they vary between semi-acoustic and rock. Then there are the ballads, like "Last Night I Dreamed" which just blew me away. I always recommend this album to my friends, and all of them that have heard it really enjoyed it and wanted to know where to buy it... If you get a chance to see them live, you are very lucky and do not pass it up.
Great Band!.......2002-02-20
The music is fresh, original, and catchy. This band is destined for greatness!
Keep your eye on this band.......2001-12-19
Catchy, complex pop songs with intelligent lyrics. In this day and age, that's probably a death sentence in the music business. This disc hasn't been far from my CD player since I got it.

great price for 2 LPs and some 12" bonus tracks, BUT...........2007-05-25
My main reason for purchasing this disc was to finally have the 12" version of "Out of Mind Out of Sight" on CD. However, in mastering this disc, they chopped off the last 20 seconds of the 12" version, because the song sounds like it ends cold, but then some synth effects return for 20 seconds before the femal chorus jumps back in with an acapella finally. That has all been totally left off the disc. Bummer.

a must-have for any music collection.......1999-12-01
I saw Jami Seiber play with Ferron last fall and Ferron had her play two songs off of this album during the show. It was so powerful and beautiful that I was actually brought to tears and I ran out and bought the album at the end of the show. Her playing will blow you away. She makes the cello express such a range of emotion and passion. The CD is great for relaxing, meditation, or just thinking in general. It definitely has been the best addition to my collection in years.
a delicious spirit entralling cd. one of my 1999 favs........1999-08-17
i loved her cello piece the very first time that i heard it. if you have a musical soul, i don't think that you'll be disappointed.
Second sight is always best.......1999-06-07
Incredible listening pleasure. I came across Jamie Sieber at a Ferron Concert at the Left Bank in Blue Hill, ME as she was backing her up and of all the CD's I bought that night, this is the one that has received the most play. Meditation to a relaxing evening to the end of a hectic day, this CD puts me into a lucid state. I want "The Goat's Earth" at my funeral don't bury me under forest trees...when I die please bury me under the shade tree...I want to hear the drum beat, I want to feel the dancer's feet. A must to any collection.
