Ambush On All Sides

Editorial Reviews
Listen.com
Electronic moodscapes range from moody synth burbles and abstract breakbeat ambiance to lustrous, St. Etienne soundalikes.

About the Artist
Robotic Storm Cloud is the solo moniker of Steve Libbey (Martian Electric/Royal Fuzz Combine), who graduated from guitar effects to software-based sound manipulation. While he uses the same tools as today's modern electronica and dance producers, Robotic Storm Cloud eschews the easy fix of a dance beat for the full, terrifying freedom of digital sound alteration. He's going to keep doing this until someone stops him.

Album Description
This collection highlights much of the early Robotic Storm Cloud work. Mr. Cloud claims to be influenced by the musical tools around him, and thus refers to this album as "The Mac and Early PC years." The limitations imposed by the (relatively) primitive recording setup allowed Mr. Cloud to sink into abstraction and texture, often forgoing melody altogether in favor of a tortured and dynamic soundscape.

Album Description

Set amid the chaos of pre-revolutionary China, small time thief, Sing, aspires to be one of the sophisticated and ruthless Axe Gang whose underworld activities overshadow the city. Stumbling across a crowded apartment complex aptly known as "Pig Sty Alley," Sing attempts to extort money from one of the ordinary locals, but the neighbors are not what they appear. Sing's comical attempts at intimidation inadvertently attract the Axe Gang into the fray, setting off a chain of events that brings the two disparate worlds face-to-face.

The exotic original score by Raymond Wong is complemented by the film's classical pieces, notably Sarasate's acclaimed "Zigeunerweisen" and Khachaturian's famous "Sabre Dance."

5 out of 5 stars What about the dialogue?.......2006-04-08

I have a question about the dialogue on this CD... is it interspersed on separate tracks between songs, or do they talk during the songs?

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2005-10-21

As a Chinese, I love this soundtrack and the movie very much! There is no more I can say. However, it's a good soundtrack and I love it very much.

4 out of 5 stars great CD, but incomplete..........2005-09-20

This is the soundtrack released to the U.S. Just so you know, the soundtrack sold in Asia features a few more songs. Most notably missing is a song preformed by Huang Sheng Yi, called "Zhi Yao Wei Ni Huo Yi Tian" which comes toward the end of the movie. It might be my favorite song in the movie, and it's too bad it's missing from the U.S. soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack.......2005-08-20

If you have seen this unbelievable movie, then you know how incredible the music is. It matches the mood of the movie and everything the previous reviewer said I agree with. It has great sweeping scores with an extremely cool "oriental/chinese" sound and presence to it. I mostly bought it for a few cool songs I fell in love with when I saw the movie and the whole album is great. You will recognize a few of the songs used in a lot of other chop socky/martial arts movies and you'll really enjoy having them along with all the other great music on this soundtrack and it goes without saying, but if you haven't seen or bought this movie yet, get it. We need to encourage Stephen Chow and support him in his endeavors to make more great movies instead of the same old rehashed formulaic, cookie cutter, boring(need I go on?)"Hollywood Entertainment" fare.

5 out of 5 stars There comes a time when you find a soundtrack that's..........2005-06-14

...Absolutely perfect!

As a collector of various movie soundtracks, there are many times when I am utterly dismayed by how unrelated they are to the movies they are supposed to complement.

The Kung Fu Hustle CD, however, is far from any of that! I watched this movie four times in the theater, and every time, the music just mesmerized me from start to finish! The movie was great, and the music was even better!

I quickly ordered the soundtrack from Amazon.com, and when it arrived, I was far from disappointed. This CD is fantastic! It does not leave anything out. What you hear in the movie is what you hear in the CD from beginning to end. The tracks are even in order of which they appear in the movie!

If you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle, then the soundtrack is definitely for you. Go forth! Purchase the soundtrack, and prepare to be pleasantly entertained by the delightful music!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Soothing..........2003-03-04

That's the best way I can describe this wonderful music. It is great background music and very much enjoyable as one cooks, paints, meditates, or just relaxes. It is very pleasant to have when greeting guests for that Chinese meal you prepare. This music should be played in restaurants, instead of pop music (as many Chinese restaurants play pop). It would certainly be more inviting...

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful in its simplicity.......2000-12-14

This album is a showcase for four brilliant musicians, each amazingly virtuosic on their respective instruments, who shine on a selection of Chinese folk and classical pieces. Tang Liangxing launches into the popular "Ambushed from Ten Sides" and you can almost hear the sparks fly as his pipa (lute) explodes in dramatic crescendos. Sisi Chen sparkles on the yangqin (hammered zither), weaving pure poetry in pieces such as "The Plow is Coming." Chen Tao flutters and trills on his dizi (flute) and is especially virtuosic in his opening solo, aptly named "A Bird in Flight," careening and soaring throughout. I'm particularly an avid fan of the er-hu (upright fiddle), and Zhang Bao-Li does not disappoint; he manages to coax such expressiveness and lyrical phrasing from the instrument, the notes strong and poignant. Bravo!

The ensemble pieces are also rewarding--they blend masterfully, each musician commenting on and enhancing the others, soaring from playfulness to deep melancholy in the space of a single musical phrase. They are expertly adept at painting pictures in sound; in "Thunder Ends the Dry Season," you can hear the soft patter of rain (gradually becoming faster as the downpour begins) and feel the farmers' joy upon watching their parched fields saturate with the life-giving droplets.

I played "Ambushed From Ten Sides" for my old roommate a few months ago. This was a fellow who was particularly fond of blasting "techno" music through his excellent speakers, and when I had him listen, he was so impressed that he copied the song onto his computer and spent the next week blasting THAT full volume! Let me tell you, get good speakers and try it out--the results are amazingly compelling, sending chills down your spine and shivers through your flesh...like listening to a story expertly told. Indeed--is Jade Bridge made up of musicians or singers or storytellers or master painters? Give a listen and rejoice at being astounded!
