A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Lay in a good round of cosmopolitans, ditch the rug and get ready to turn 2004 into 1944 with these retro swing kings. In an album where horns are king, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Christmas disc will please fans and remind the elders that the big band sound has not left the building. While singer Scotty Morris is a bit too mannered at times, he does an adequate job of covering the Yule's coolest, including "Blue Christmas," "Merry Christmas Baby" and "Is Zat You Santa Claus?" and can write a seasonal tune worth returning to every year: Highlights include Morris' own "Rockabilly Christmas," the timeless "Christmas Time in Tinsel Town" and "Last Night (I Went Out with Santa Claus)." But with the Daddy's baritone sax master Karl Hunter blazing and the rhythm section fanning the yule log on "Jingle Bells (Cha Cha)," this might be the disc to jumpstart your holiday party -- even before Thanksgiving dinner gets in the oven. --Martin Keller

4 out of 5 stars Beware - this album is almost too much fun!.......2007-01-11

If you're not prepared to stomp your feet, sway your hips and just generally let loose, this album is not for you. BBVD brings every bit of their modern Big Band, big sound, foot thumpin' style to every one of the tunes on this CD. Great fun to hear them do their thing with Mr. Heatmiser.

4 out of 5 stars Tree Chopin' Good.......2004-12-15

Now if you ask me, this is the style of Christmas music you need to be listnin' to before you go out to chop down your neighbors tree to drag it in and use for your Christmas tree because you are too lazy to go out to the state park to chop one down. It gets you in the mood for mischief. I ain't proportion that ya'll ought to go out and chop down your neighbor's tree, I'm just saying that this music will make you feel like getting' up and doing something frisky and possibly naughty.

I love it. So does Mama. Junior don't like it, but that boy is as dumb as a sack of hammer (don't tell his mama I said that because she'll have my hide)

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected!.......2004-12-15

If you're a BBVD fan, you won't want to miss this one. My husband bought it for me becuase of the "Heatmiser" song but it has shared my CD player with only the Barenaked Ladies "Barenaked for the Holidays" since I got it. I would highly recommend this CD!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite up to snuff.......2004-12-11

I've been a big fan of BBVD for years, but this CD just doesn't quite make it. A few very good tracks, Last Night I went out with Santa Claus and Mr. Heatmiser are excellent. A few OK tracks and the two instumental versions of Jingle Bells that just drag on. I was hoping for more, especially after the Christmas CD the Brian Setzer Orchestra put out a couple of years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2004-11-14

Great retro holiday record. Also look for Royal Crown Revue's contribution on Maybe This Christmas Tree, equally as charming.

5 out of 5 stars True Tribute.......2007-03-11

It may seem odd to honor a SoCal punk band like the Offspring with a string tribute, but i can't see a better way to pay tribute than with a genre so wildly different and unthinkable. The fact that string tribute actually works demonstrates the strength of their compositions and owes a lot to the masterful music arrangement and production. Music is about ever evolving ideas and genre bending, and musicians are supposed to take one another's music and challenge our preconceived notions. I especially recommend tracks 2 - The Kids Aren't Alright, 6 - Self Esteem and 8 - Want you Bad. The original composition - Off String, does a beautiful job of capturing the spirit the music and definitely holds its own against the other tracks. This is a must have for the true Offspring fan as well as anyone else looking for an irreverent take on this genre.

3 out of 5 stars Too Literal.......2006-02-08

The string quartet tribute to these Offspring songs are, in my opinion, a bit too literal. They try too hard to stick - strictly - to the original song and sometimes it produces awkward sounding music. For example, I think the best piece on this CD is the original song composed by the group performing in this CD. In a sense this is less a tribute than a translation, and the Offspring did just fine with their original instruments. Offspring fans might enjoy this CD, but I would reccomend any string quartet tribute - done by Todd Mark Rubenstein and David Davidson - to your other favorite band.

4 out of 5 stars Think Metallica -> Apocalyptica.......2005-11-27

If you were to take an accoustic version of the featured Offspring songs, then have Apocalyptica cover them, this is probably what you would get.
This isn't a disk *by* the Offspring, it's a string tribute to them. It's good for when you want some Offspring, but in a relaxing background form. The music is wonderfully arranged for the most part, with a few sparse moments not quit living up to what I think they could have. Overall, if you can pick this up for a decent price, it is definitely a must-have for a true Offspring fan who can appreciate music that's a little on the classical side.

1 out of 5 stars IT SUCKS ASS.......2005-08-25

i hate it i hate it i hate it

its dumb, it sucks, and its embarassing.

This is an utter disgrace to my favorite band. How can you POSSIBLY compare orchestra to THE OFFSPRING???? Plus, the orchestra sucks. Want some offspring? buy a REAL cd!

3 out of 5 stars This Is What You Want.......2004-07-09

If you thought Mase's flat, slow delivery was in tortoiselike mode on "Lookin' At Me," your assumption couldn't be more wrong. "What You Want" displays Mase's slow-mo flow in torpid like slug mode - lackadaisical. The number is well-crafted and reinvented around a well chosen sample. Though the track features some of the worst Spanish pronunciation of words in the history of language, it's still spellbinding. The "New Jill Flava" trio, Total, provide their captivating croon and harmonies - backup vocalists for the Notorious B.I.G. and gained fame from their '96 self-titled debut - but sound better with deep, seductive funk grooves. "What You Want" remains to be one of Mase's finest and successful releases.

              5 out of 5 stars Da Bomb.......2000-01-14

Even though Mase isn't in the game anymore, he deserves his share of props. This joint with Total is one of the best tracks he has done. I wish everyone would stop hatin' cuz right now he's richer than any one of you reading this.

3 out of 5 stars Mase can do better.............1999-07-22

Mase & Total make a great duet but he can do much much better. He needs to rap or sing instead of talk. Besides I think it's a alright song.
