Second Edition

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Among its many virtues, the second album by John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols group has the most brain-devouring bass sound ever, courtesy of Jah Wobble, whose dubby throb overpowers Lydon's drugged-out wail and Keith Levene's spidery, modal guitar lines. Lydon's words and singing evoke unending horror--they're the voice of a man in hell who can barely understand what's happening to him--and the songs here cycle through a few notes over and over until they're abruptly cut off. "This person's had enough of useless memories," he moans, and Second Edition isn't just a repudiation of rock's chords and catharsis, but a despairing attempt to forget. --Douglas Wolk --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars US Second Edition Vs. UK Metal Box.......2007-07-17

UK MEtal Box has been remastered, all the songs are 1-2 seconds longer than US Second versions. Surprisingly, these longer seconds seem to be apparent in the UK songs intros: jangles, noises, and voices.

Song order: Socialist and No Birds are reversed.

Overall, the UK Metal Box is punchier, and more musical sounding. If you are a US Second Edition fan I think you will enjoy Metal Boxes' nuances.

3 out of 5 stars Killer album...but CD sound does "second edition" serious injustice.......2007-02-02

Amazing record, no doubt. One problem here though. Put simply, don't buy this album on CD, if you can help it. Get the Vinyl format instead. CD's can't even begin to handle the complexity of the sound on this album, not to mention absolutly the deeeepest bass grooves EVER laid on track. "Second Edition" was recently reissued on Vinyl in a round metal canister with 3 vinyl records (that's how it was originally released in '80). And by the way, the album also goes by "Metal Box" hence the round film canister. Get the vinyl "Metal Box", that is if you value quality, you'll thank me.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best post punk albums.........2007-01-13

There is nothing I could say about this album that hasn't been said before. An amazing, influential post-punk album, this is the first PIL CD I ever owned. Weaving together cool guitar lines, loud dub bass, and awesome steady drumming(Martin Atkins of Pigface, Ministry, Killing Joke, etc), along with the offbeat vocals of none other than Johnny Rotten, former front man for the Sex Pistols. Even though it is the same singer, the vocals in the two bands sound completely different, in PIL it is more of a spoken word type of singing.
My lasting impressions, as far as comparisons go, would be a nice mixture of mostly Joy Division(bleak side), with a little bit of Talking Heads(upbeat side). Don't be put off by the first song, it is the only one that ventures into the 10 minute mark, and beside, it is a great intro to the CD. After hearing 'Memories' and 'Careering', it is very obvious where Luke Jenner and the Rapture got their musical influences from. From a different musical point of view, the song 'Poptones' reminds me of Fugazi every time I hear it, very cool. There is only one song that I dislike a little bit, and it is 'Chant' (probably too much chanting). After that is the closing song, 'Radio 4', (another modern day post punk band you may have heard of). This song is nothing like the rest on the CD, it is a beautiful sounding instrumental, reminds me of something you would have heard on Radioheads' "Kid A" album. If you could imagine hearing Joy Division with more instrumentation, or if you just enjoy post punk in general, I would recommend checking this out 'cause it rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-09-21

Thank you Johnny Lyndon aka Rotten for you love of music. I know you did the Sex Pistols for the sake of money, i know Can and Neu are much better than Malcom McLaren or Sid Vicious! And thank you for presenting me this crazy virtuoso renamed Jah Wobble - what a a f***** bass player! What music! Buy this and put them next to your Can - Neu - Funkadelic/Parliament - A Certain Ratio - Liquid Liquid - ESG records. It's where mine is.

3 out of 5 stars not good but...not bad.......2006-09-01

I despise John Lydon. I hope his act is schtick or else he deserves to have the tar beaten out of him.

I also have a limited respect for him. The Sex Pistols, when they wanted to be, were a fine rock band. Their best songs were enhanced by Lydon's vocal attack.

P.I.L. had cool musicians that were distracted by Lydon's absurd wailing. However, this is a musically adventerous album.

"Memories" and "Albatross" are actually good songs. The other tunes have really cool bass and guitar.

If another less-abrasive singer sang on this, it probably would have been better.

If Lydon put this all together then kudos to him, it is a fine musical experiment. If it was a group effort, then Lydon not only marred the work but he also ruined a good thing by taking the sound towards dance.

This album is definetly a bass/guitar showcase!

This is a great collection of Salsa. Terrific cuts. Excellent to listen to and to dance to.

3 out of 5 stars Great practice CD.......2006-08-25

I just started ballroom dancing a few months ago. In addition to my private lessons I took some extra salsa dance lessons. This was a great help for practicing at home between lessons. I don't speak Spanish, so I don't know what the artists are singing. But the tempos were easy to follow for a begining dancer.

The Rough Guide's second foray into Ireland's diverse music scene commences with a feisty instrumental by Flook and compiler Geoff Wallis somehow keeps up the momentum through all 22 tracks and 70 minutes. It is obviously impossible to be comprehensive within a single CD, but Wallis has a fine ear for neo-trad artists who share an unstuffy pub-session esthetic, if not much else. Frankie Gavin¹s scratchy, athletic, sweet-sour fiddle remains as satisfying as it was during his De Dannan days. The Prodigals' The Morning After is at once rueful, funny and poetic. Gerry O'Connor's lightning-fast banjo would sound right at home in American bluegrass. But even amid such remarkable company, Aran Islands-born Lasairfhíona ní Chonaola (pronounced La-sah-reena Nee Hun-kneel-ah) is revealed as a singer of overwhelming power. On the Irish-language ballad, Bean Pháidin (Pháidin's Wife), she vents all the cold fury of a girl whose beloved has married another woman. --Christina Roden

Music has always been an essential part of Irish culture, and the musical traditions of Ireland - focused around pub sessions - remain amongst Europe's most enduring and vibrant. Songs (sung in Irish and English) hold a special place in Irish life and exemplify the vivacity of the Irish singing tradition and its wide range of subjects. This all-new second edition of The Rough Guide To Irish Music provides an extensive introduction to Ireland's musical landscape, from the driving music of Donegal and the foot-stomping polkas and slides of Kerry and Cork to the work of those exploring the borders between traditional music and other genres.

3 out of 5 stars Where is the modern music?.......2005-04-27

The music on this CD is good, but listeners will be led to think that Irish music has not evolved at all since the 1950s. There are plenty of Irish singers and musicians releasing their own excellent material these days in all genres, especially rock, pop, cabaret and singer-songwriter. The CD would be better if some of them were included.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent up-to-date guide.......2005-04-21

Subtitled "Dublin to Donegal: essential sessions & evolving traditions" this is a generous selection of Irish roots folk music, with none of the more commercial or country-orientated numbers that often invade this type of CD collections. OK, maybe The Prodigals' The Morning After is a bit corny, but otherwise this is good traditional stuff.

There are many important names here so it is certainly is a good guide for newcomers, while seasoned folkies will appreciate the overall quality and likely find some favourites. Plus there's more than a couple of really fine artists here that I for one hadn't even heard of (and I'm pretty well versed in Irish trad). Unlike many Irish Folk compilations this is not just old material either - Lunasa's contribution is taken from their most recent album The Kinnitty Sessions and Altan's comes from their forthcoming album. Can't get much more up to date than that.

The who's who includes Frankie Gavin, Dervish, Maighread & Triona Ni Dhonhnaill, Donal Lunny, Paddy Keenan, Seamus Creagh, Aidan Coffe, Paul Brady, Matt Molloy, Seamus Begley, Jim Murray, Cran, Lunasa, Altan & Gerry O'Connor.

There's a balanced mix of songs and instrumentals, fast and slow, with an emphasis on excitement and feel rather than standards. This is indeed an excellent guide to Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Gem for Aspiring Pianists and Lovers of Piano Music .......2006-09-30

This CD brings together a good number (17) of the most favored classical pieces prepared and played by piano students by the millions all over the world for lessons, for recitals, and, most importantly, simply for pleasure. The pieces also have been familiar to, and loved by, music listeners everywhere for many years; nearly all are standard offerings by concert artists in professional appearances and recordings, as well. Because of their wide popularity and solid musical substance and appeal, they represent a common basic esthetic repertory for pianists and piano music lovers.

To present these pieces we have Daniell Revenaugh, an American pianist and teacher, as well as a sometime conductor and inventor, of Berkeley, California. A quick search of the Internet provides little information about Mr. Revenaugh beyond mention of the present recording and one of the Busoni fourth piano concerto in which he conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra while John Ogdon plays the fiendishly difficult piano part. Fortunately, though, I remember Danny as a friend, a neighbor, and a fellow music student at Florida State University during the mid-1950s. (He and I once read a four-hands piano piece together in which he played the Primo part well and I flailed away trying to keep up on the Secondo part.) At the time he seemed fascinated with the idea of being a concert pianist--in particular, an outstanding virtuoso. (He had already, I think, studied with Egon Petri, star pupil of the pianistic giant Ferruccio Busoni.) Since I've had no subsequent contact with him, I am unable to comment on his career, but this CD shows him to possess a firm technique and laudable artistry in performance. He makes the piano sound good!

As I've made a stab, at least, at playing all the pieces included here, except those on tracks #4, #13, and #15, I looked forward to hearing them performed by an accomplished pianist on a fine instrument. On the whole I was not disappointed; indeed, I found welcome bits of revelation here and there, and felt any future attempts I might make at the pieces would be better informed for having heard this CD. (I should note that I've also heard recordings by the composers themselves of those by Rachmaninov, Paderewski, and Lecuona.)

What I appreciate most about Revenaugh's performances is his seriousness of artistic intent. He ignores the fact that these are old chestnuts banged away at, often excruciatingly, by generations of variously able or unable pianists. Instead, he approaches each one freshly as a valued work, without prejudice, condescension or cynicism, and gives it his best, thus breathing new life into these classics. I also appreciate his generous and informative liner notes on the pieces and, what is rare, on his approach to performing them.

While I found the disk to be quite convincing, satisfying, and worthwhile overall, I want to offer a few observations and opinions on selected items. I particularly liked his performances of the Rachmaninov prelude, the two Liszt pieces, the Chopin nocturne, and the Ivanovici waltz. I liked the Beethoven sonata and the Debussy, Brahms, Bach, Paderewski, Sinding and Lecuona items, as well. I found the Beethoven "Fuer Elise" rather too fast for my taste, though as a bagatelle it might warrant such lightness of touch. (I was grateful it wasn't sentimentalized.) I found the Schubert piece also a good bit too hurried, and felt it thus lost much of its Viennese charm and grace. I mostly liked the Chopin polonaise, but did not care for the slow-then-fast playing of the E Major section with its repeated bass figure; I'd have been happier if he'd chosen an intermediate tempo and stuck with it. (It's exciting enough without added histrionics.) The Chopin etude was OK, but, as Revenaugh mentions, the fast bass runs and arpeggios get a bit muddied by the too live acoustics. I'm not really familiar with the Chaminade piece, but I thought it sounded fine. I don't agree with R. that the Paderewski minuet is really a waltz; I think it's a concert minuet.

I do not know what today's cadre of great concert pianists might think of this disk--it is not in any case targeted to them. I do believe that many lovers of the piano and its music, whether players or not, can derive much esthetic enjoyment and edification from it. And to the current crop of budding young pianists, I would recommend most of the pieces as reasonable models for emulation. The few idiosyncratic performances may serve as vehicles for discussion of interpretational approach. Finally, with nearly 73 minutes of meat-and-potatoes piano classics, this CD has got to be a bargain!

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Christine Brewer Sings Schubert.......2005-10-26

Young and vital soprano Christine Brewer is now among the top Wagner and Strauss interpreters entering the arena of big voices on the operatic stage today. This recording, one volume (31) of the famed Hyperion Schubert Collection, finds her singing Schubert lieder, and given that this recording dates back to 1998, it is interesting to hear how her voice has developed.

Many of the sopranos who opt for careers in the operas of Wagner, Strauss, and the heavier weight Verdi/Puccini roles demonstrate less conviction when it comes to the communication required in the German lieder, especially Schubert. But here is Brewer eight years ago with all the promise of her soaring, rich voice addressing the smaller scale intimacies of Schubert and doing it quite successfully. Some of the vocal traits that seemed possibly problematic here (glottal attacks, a bit of pitch lurching) are happily not present in her current vocal estate!

This is an odd cluster of Schubert with Lieder combined with choral works (the Psalms), but given the overall context of Hyperion's venture, these all flow well. Certainly the artists perform them well - Graham Johnson is a superb accompanist - and the choral work is in keeping with the period. Not a great collection of works, but this early introduction to Christine Brewer will become a collector's item. She has a major career ahead! Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars Have no fear !.......2003-01-01

Of course we all demand a capable performance. Unfortunatly I am frequently dissapointed. Prepare yourself to be astonished. Christine Brewer delivers a powerful yet amazingly luscious & almost creamy sound. You will stand jaw-dropingly awed by this unique combination of powerful mastery & Soothing finesse. ENJOY
