The Lies are a very theatrical band. So much so that their newest album recalls 1970s sci-fi and action-film soundtracks, complete with strutting drums, staccato vocals, and sonorous washes of synthesizer that sound like the work of a band of renegade tuba players. Their music recalls the dirgelike sound of Joy Division, with metallic, monotone vocals over layers of ominous, oppressive instrumentation. The Lies' heavy, retro-futuristic sound is broken up all too infrequently by a tinkling piano intro or a Pavementesque vocal or guitar line; by and large, though, the album is 40 minutes of inadvertently parodic, goth-influenced post-punk. It mines the slim strip of territory between the more genuine-sounding B-sides and outtakes of Joy Division's Substance and the more energetic, synth-fueled work of Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Brian Reitzall on Logan's Sanctuary. Not surprisingly, the Lies find nothing new. They are indie kids by current standards, and were still in diapers when the music that feeds their souls, the gloom-and-doom goth of the 1980s, was in its heyday. If Resigned is any indication, arriving late on the scene has left the band turning stones in search of originality in a field long fallow. --Sarah Sternau

Sean's big brother pulled the sophomore hara-kiri routine on 1992's Free-for-all, sabotaging the goodwill built up by his debut hit, "No Myth," with an album of impenetrable Einsteinian pop. On Resigned, he's back to wonderfully melodic Beatles-inspired fare like "Out of My Hands" and "Me Around." "Like Egypt Was" proves he's still a brainiac, but all the melodies and arrangements here are once again ready for primetime. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars This is what John Lennon would be doing.......2007-04-08

-- if he were still with us.

The songs are very Beatleish and Penn's voice reminds me of JL- especially on 'Selfish', which also features a Lenny Kravitz slick solo lick.

Hard to not play over and over. MP is a musical genius. Amazing how much talent runs in the family- one of our best all time songwriters (underappreciated as he is) with a brother who acts up there with Deniro.

5 out of 5 stars A gem from an underrated artist.......2007-03-01

Michael Penn is one of those artists who has never quite broken through to mainstream success. He deserves it. RESIGNED is another example of his talent. His songs are little gems; filled with intelligent and meaningful lyrics and melodies that show his Beatles influences. And it's the lyrics that will keep you coming back to his songs again and again. For example on songs like "All That That Implies" (To add insult to injury
The sum you gets means I agree
So you can call that empathy
And find someone else to blame)
and "Try" (" Watch you take the fifth as I give you the third degree) he quickly shows his verbal agility as he constructs his miniature examinations of the human condition. And anybody who can reference Underdog and Wally Cox and make it work is obviously a genius. Do yourself a favor; if the singer-songwriter sound is one you enjoy, don't miss an opportunity to add this to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Penn's best record.......2005-10-01

I have all of Penn's records, including the first two originals (not the combined amalgamated evil) and as a whole, this is most likely his best. There is nothing on here that engenders in me any reason to skip a track. His arrangements are excellent for pop, his voice is beautiful, his harmonies enticing...this is his best record. Best place to start with Michael Penn.

5 out of 5 stars Try it.......2004-02-27

Beware of buying this album because it might make you a Michael Penn fan. This probably means you'll get frustrated later on by the fact that he doesn't record enogh albums!

Luckily for me, I don't get tired of listening to this CD. All of the songs are very nicely crafted, as is normally the case with Michael Penn, but this album packs more emotion than any of his other ones. It's very hard to judge the quality of an album by the sound samples Amazon provides, but if what you hear is remotely appealing to you, buy this album. You will thoroughly enjoy this music while you agonizingly wait to hear more.

5 out of 5 stars What a great album!.......2003-09-04

Incredible! Everyone talks about his brother...Why not talk about him? This guy has so much talent. This is one of the best albums ever in my opinion.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new under the sun.......2004-02-18

After the recommendation made by the "music fan" in London (and thanks for that!!) I decided to go and buy the album, which I found pretty uninteresting. Just another little British band doing same things done by others and that will probably go into anonimity shortly.

5 out of 5 stars If you think Coldplay are great, you must own this CD.......2003-09-23

I will not waste your time with lengthy reviews and poetry. It is very simple, if you think Coldplay are great (which I happen to believe they are), then Minuteman will blow your top off. This CD is awesome from start to finish. Buy it, you will never regret it. If you doubt me, sample it. But you will ultimately agree with me, you can't do without owning it if you are passionate about your music collection.
