Monster Movie
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Monster Movie are a duo from the UK, comprised of Christian Savill and Sean Hewson. The origins of Monster Movie can be traced back to a band called Eternal who released one single on the esteemed UK indie label Sarah Records and played one gig in 1990. Christian was also already the guitarist in Slowdive who were signed to Creation Records. Slowdive released three albums between 1991 and 1995 before disbanding. But I'm sure you knew that. Then followed a period of disenchantment as Britain was gripped by Britpop and Mod karaoke. Monster Movie were formed in January 2000. They decided to play instruments they didn't know how to play and to detune instruments they did know how to play as a device to avoid convention and boredom. They were interested in writing simple detuned melodies.
Between March and September 2000, Monster Movie recorded five songs with Martin Nichols at the White House studio, the same producer and studio used for the first Eternal demo in 1989. The results are a shining accomplishment of impossibly catchy guitarpop, with hints of shoegaze (chugging fuzz bass and swirling, effects-laden guitar work), dronepop (witness "Rovaniemi" with it's layers-upon-layers of effects, keyboard drones, guitar feedback.) and overall just a fantastic sense of pop melody. Monster Movie's songcrafting will make these tunes a permanent fixture in your memory bank. Christian's vocals ride atop with confidence, while the backing vocals of guest Louise Hewson provide the ultimate perfect touch.

Large. Apparition. Beast........2006-04-19
Very good stuff here. Not your average surf band. In fact, the traditional surf/reverb sound is toned down, and replaced by a lot more of a distortion sound. If you happen to own the Los Straitjackets 3-D album, think of the first track, Squid, and that should give you a little bit of an idea. Most of this album is very uptempo, so it's perfect for driving and backflipping around your apartment. Too bad these guys will never get famous coz we need more music like this in the world. Kinda makes you wanna watch a Godzilla movie.

I thought this review said it best of all:
Rating: 7.8
Somewhere along the line, surf music ceased to have anything to do with actual surfing and migrated to kitsch. Dick Dale had "Pipeline", the Surfaris had "Wipe-Out!", and Man...or Astroman? had..."You Can't Get Good Riblets in Space". But although shuddering tremolo bars fit the image of a guy in floral print trunks, the music is mostly instrumental and as such essentially abstract, so you can make it mean anything you want it to. Even early surf rockers like the Ventures and the Tornados realized this and began to incorporate the astronautical, lounge, and kitsch elements that color most efforts in the genre these days.
So the term "surf" as it relates to music today basically just refers to music with lots of reverb and crazy guitar playing, which is fine-- you can acknowledge the roots without trying to turn them into branches. I can say pretty categorically that Croatia's Bambi Molesters are the best surf band in the world today, but given Man...or Astroman?'s long silence, Daikaiju certainly have a claim to the #2 spot. Much like fellow modern surf-rockers Los Straightjackets, the men of Daikaiju keep their identities secret, each represented by a mask in the band's press releases, which also feature a lot of fake Japanese-to-English translations like "Kabuki men deliver most high rocket impact!"
Students of Godzilla, Mothra, and Gamera know that Daikaiju is Japanese for "giant monster," and the Huntsville, Ala., quartet are obviously enamored with the most conspicuous aspects of Japanese popular culture, though they refrain from sticking soundclips from Mechagodzilla sequels all over their albums the way so many other surf groups recently have. They instead opt to let the music speak for itself, and when it does, it's impressive, to say the least. Though their sound is closer to Man...or Astroman? than anything else (it's of course possible that there are members of that band hiding out in their ranks) there's a certain degree of prog muscle behind all that reverbed shredding.
Surf is one of those funny genres where a fan basically knows what to expect and enjoyment comes from hearing it done really well, and Daikaiju delivers on that score, but there is one monumental surprise lurking in this mix in the form of album closer "Farewell to Monster Island". At almost nine minutes long it's nearly four times longer than the average surf instrumental and in place of the manic snare and ride cymbal of a surf beat, the band rides a skanking dub riddim, marrying two genres that in retrospect were born to love each other. The e-bowed interlude is something to hear, but even more impressive is the simple fact that the guitarists hiding behind these masks have a jazz-like sense of how to phrase a solo. The song is the kind of jam that bands just don't do any more, and it sort of makes me wish more would.
So in the end, Daikaiju is an impressive full-length debut for a band that's clearly got more up its sleeve than a few Trashmen 45s and tablature print-outs for "Rabble Rouser". The thing with the masks and stage names like Secret Asian Man and Brain Conflict is frankly little more than a distracting sideshow to the main event, which is of course the band's massive wave of prime surf. Grab your board.

HybridMagazine Review.......2005-09-01
Like me, have you longed for the release of a really great surf rock album? Not a surf rock album that was merely a sterilized distillation of Dick Dale's moments of greatness, but one that reminded how the genre could be freshened up and made viable once again? Perhaps an album that would be as great as the first time that Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet made the world sit up and take notice of Canadian surf, or the first time that Man Or Astroman? grabbed hold of space rock and twanged it into surf? Then, boy have I got just the album for you!
Daikaiju's eponymous release is full to the brim with twanging and boinging guitars, blistering tom rolls, and throbbing basslines. From the very first notes of "Daikaiju Die!" the album is a rollicking good time ride through the world of surf rock. Most tracks on the album clock in at right around three and a half minutes, which makes the album pass by so quickly that there will be an immediate need to hit the play button again. None of the tracks are sleepers (Take that, other surf bands!) and every track has it's own unique character, which makes this one of the finest surf albums of all time. Standouts include the brilliant tremolo swoops on "Incognito" and the stuttering machine gun guitars of "Super X-9". The jazzy cymbal wash of "The Trouble With Those Mothra Girls" makes perfect counterpoint to the deliberate bass walks and chiming guitars. The Van Halen-esque rhythm guitars on the intro to "Sharkakhan" give way to a fast paced racing song that would fit right at home in any good spy movie, especially during a chase scene.
No sleeper tracks. Distinctly different feels melodies in each song. Amazing guitar, bass and drum tones. Musicianship of the highest caliber. Those are the things you will find on this release, Daikaiju. And really, beyond that, the only thing you need to know about Daikaiju is that one of the guys goes by the moniker Secret Asian Man. And who can't stand behind that?

Much more than a surf band.......2005-03-09
It would be easy to label Daikaiju a surf/spy rock band.
Easy, but not really fair, and certainly not accurate.
Daikaiju blends the instrumental surf rock genre with all sorts of other influences. Super-heavy riffs worthy of any hard rock outfit ("Daikaiju Die!"), beautifully intricate melodies (see "Farewell to Monster Island", and hints of reggae, jazz, and even some jamband-esque elements makes for an album that is very distinctive and interesting, never getting repetitive or tiresome at all.
I reccommend this record not only to surf fans, but to lovers of great, unique, instrumental music in general. Buy this record now and experience "the soundtrack to the greatest monster movie never made"
Oh, and for god's sake...seek out their first CD "The Phasing Spider Menace". It's out-of-print, but it's worth any price you might pay just for "Rising Up From the Depths of Time".

A slow burner.......2007-01-11
This is an indie rock kind of thing...not too wierd or exotic, but there is a seathing realism that creeps out from underneath these seemingly meaningless lyrics. There is something very creepy and real going on in these songs, along the lines of Death Cab For Cutie but with more ambiguity and with an overall sound that could tour alongside everything from We Are Scientists or the Bravery, to Single Frame or Autolux (all groups which should never be confused, or underestimated). I can't really descibe this sound, except to say that it's addictive, it ages well, and therefore I can't bring myself to take it out of my CD wallet. It's been in there for almost a year now. That single "Yr Eyes Are Liars" is a MONSTER if you have the ears to notice. So buy this if you are thinking about doing it anyway. Even though they are on a major label...come on, I mean, this label has no clue what to do with a group like this anyway...I was barely able to even find them on the record label website. Just buy it...I doubt they will be on this label for long.
So glad I picked this album up. .......2006-12-27
Tower was closing so they had a clearance sale and I ended up randomly picking up a bunch of cds and this was one of them and I'm soo glad I got it. I've been listening to it non-stop. I'm going to pick up their other albums. Sound Team is my new favorite band.
Team-work.......2006-10-02
For those lucky enough to visit it, Austin is the unofficial indie rock capitol of the United States. So it seems fitting that the lads of Sound Team met there, banded together, and started making music in -- unsurprisingly -- an abandoned record factory.
The results: Their full-length debut "Movie Monster," which has a few freshman stumbles, but overall is composed of pure rock'n'roll wit, like Spoon or the Walkmen. The vibrant sound and skilled instrumentation whirl up into a solid, intriguing debut that gets better every time you listen to it. One of the most unique rock albums of the year.
One of those freshman stumbles is the first two songs of the album -- they should have been switched. The shimmering "Get Out" kicks off the album, but the undulating synth over a soft guitar just isn't very compelling. That's left to the stunning "Born To Please," an urgent, grimy rocker with buzzing guitars and ominous waves of synth. "Do you remember the one who/who took the place/in the sun from you?/I know you do!" Matt Oliver wails.
For a few songs after that, they divide themselves between the synthier songs and the rock-ier songs. The title track is a dark, slightly creepy synth song, but then it switches to the intensely catchy, hard-rock "TV Torso." From there on, the band tries out a variety of styles that are all connected by two things -- their tight riffs, and their undertones of synth. Melodic rock, fuzz-rock, hard rock and finishing up with the energetic "Handful of Billions."
The closest comparison I can make to Sound Team's sound is Spoon -- both of them have tight, often catchy melodies and solid instrumentation. It's rock, with no pretentions. But don't think that this is simple guitar pop -- on the first listen, you're wrapped up in the tight melodies. But after listening for awhile, the hidden layers in each song start to pop out at the listener.
Guitar is the most prominent instrument here -- fuzzing, buzzing and cycling in tight, sleek riffs, or else bouncing along in mellow loops in "Your Eyes Are Liars." It's dark and gritty, and is paired with equally dark (but less gritty) synth that softens the angular edges without being too overpowering. And the whole thing is backed by sharp drumming and the occasional tambourine shake.
Oliver has a voice that takes a little getting used to, especially since he is often overpowered by the music. Personally I had a rough time understanding a word he said at times But his vocals grow on you, especially during "Born to Please," and pretty soon you won't notice the rough edges. Especially if you CAN make out the lyrics -- they're a bit bizarre, but worth it. ("When there's nine thousand neckties/and a swarm all around you...")
Unpretentious but musically astounding, the Sound Team make a tight, solid debut in "Movie Monster." If they get the attention they deserve, then they'll be the next big thing.
major band.......2006-09-25
I heard this album and was stunned. This is a great album by a totally unknown band. Why aren't people talking about these guys? I saw them live in San Francisco and they were a great live band too. All the songs are solid and it's a unique sounding band. If they were from Toronto maybe people would say this is the next Radiohead. My favorite song is "Your Eyes Are Liars." Every song is really great. Sound Team is the band of the future. I really hope that more people can experience this band live. I hope to see them more. Spread the word. I guess they already opened for Arcade Fire, and blew them off the stage. So they have a Next Big Thing vibe. But they are from Texas. Maybe that is holding them back? This record is somewhere between indie classic and major blockbuster. It's very hot today.
Another mediocre band.......2006-09-09
Mediocrity lives! Weak vocals! Can the rave reviewers mention why this is supposedly such a great CD? It's so frustrating that so many people settle for so little.

A hint of what's to come.......2007-01-05
The album starts off strongly but as a whole doesn't equal what Can achieved with Damo Suzuki a few years later. Those albums have some positively religious moments, whereas this one just points the way to the listener who picks up this disc with the benefit of hindsight. I may be demoting this one star because Can at their peak are so awe-inspiring, but this is still better than 75% of what's out there. If you are reading this, you know about Can, you are curious, you obviously have good taste, so you owe it to yourself to pick it up.
Oh Can, you made a believer out of me!.......2006-05-10
Just simply amazing. The sounds made by these guys is still cutting edge. I heard many things about Can, I decided to start with their first album and it had great reviews as well. PLus the cover looks cool, something like Voltron. Anyway, it's only 4 songs but they made an impression on me. Jaki Liebezeit's exquisite style of drumming, part drum machine/part African style drumming just blew me away. Mix that with the heavy bass line from Czukay, Karoli's loud distorted guitar and Mooney's wild singing and you have the stuff of legend. It's a shame that Mooney didn't record another album with them during their music changing era (68-74) because I like him best. Damo Suzuki is great too but I guess we all have a preference. My song on this would be Mary, Mary So Contrary. The insane babbling and repeating of 'Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary' by Malcom Mooney just gets me everytime. There's nothing quite like this band, perhaps Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Flaming Lips and Radiohead's later works but still, Can are a band completely on a group of their own. My only gripe would be that weren't more songs on this album. Ground breaking brilliant stuff.
Can - 'Monster Movie' (Mute).......2005-12-02
Originally released in 1969,as this was Can's very first record.Apparently the only 'actual' lp to feature original vocalist Malcom Mooney.Hey,the man can belt with the best of them but I guess I'm just so used to Damo Suzuki.Nice job on the remaster/reissue here.Tunes that make this CD a true keeper are "Father Cannot Yell",the somewhat psych "Outside My Door" and their twenty minute epic "Yoo Doo Right".A progressive/krautrock classic no doubt.
Smoke a Haiku Cigarette with Can.......2005-10-18
The thing that impresses me most about Can is that while their sound changed dramatically over the years, there was an amazing consistency to their classic run of albums. Monster Movie was their debut, and the only full-length album they released with Malcolm Mooney on vocals (Delay 1968 didn't see the light of day for many years afterward.) On Monster Movie, one can point out many similarities with other acts, such as the acid-drenched Velvet Underground guitar tones, the funky extended beats a la James Brown and the beat-poetry-as-vocals approach of the Doors. But Can sounds nothing less than completely original in the way they blend these elements with their own unique perspectives.
Mooney shared the same offbeat concept of lead vocals as his successor, Damo Suzuki. The big difference is that Mooney was an expatriate American and spoke English as a first language, meaning you can actually make out what he's "singing" (reciting might be more apt!) Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Damo Suzuki's work with the band, but it's cool to hear the vocals so upfront and lyrically discernable on a Can CD. Mooney tosses off terrific little poetic non-sequiters like the one I used in my review title all over this album.
Elsewhere, guitarist Michael Karoli, keyboard player Irmin Schmidt and bassist Holger Czukay were playing a lot rougher and more psychedelic than later albums, while Jaki Liebezeit was his usual precision-controlled monster self on drums. This was a sound that the band would continue through tracks like "Mother Sky" and the Tago Mago extravaganza, before abandoning it for a more ambient direction.
"Father Cannot Yell" is a perfect encapsulation of this early style, with Mooney ranting about fathers who haven't been born yet while the band kicks up a storm that could rival the great "Mother Sky" for intensity. Can's twisted take on the "Mary Mary" nursery rhyme culminates with Mooney's hoarse repetition of the title repeated until it becomes an incantation, while the band swirls and pounds. The real sleeper here is "Outside My Door," a terrific psychedelic nugget with some nice (uncredited) harmonica that was unique in the Can lexicon. By the way, my copy shows this song as being 7:22 for some reason. It's actually 4:05.
The epic, side-long "Yoo Doo Right" was alleged to have been edited from a 12-hour(!) jam session that could rival the Grateful Dead's of the time. It is a mammoth stew of everything that made this inaguaral edition of Can so great, with every member getting a chance to shine before it's finished knocking you out of your seat. "Yoo Doo Right" is worth the price of admission on it's own in the same way that "Mother Sky" was on Soundtracks, but like that album, we can only count our blessings that the surrounding tracks are so great.
This latest remaster, a hybrid this time, improves tremendously over the original vinyl album but not very much over the last remastered edition of this CD. There is a color booklet with some historic pictures and liner notes. My only slight gripe is that some bonus tracks from the Mooney era would have been nice, such as "Connection" and "The Empress & The Ukraine King." But this is a classic 5-star record in it's own right, as was virtually everything this band recorded up to and including Landed.
Can's Psychadelic debut.......2005-05-04
Here it is folks the birth of Can! I don't own many of there cds as of yet except for this one, Tago Mago and Delay1968, but this one is probably my favorite one that I've heard. In this album they have an african-american lead singer named Malcom Mooney who is my favorite singer from Can. He's very different from Damo Suzuki. This album has 4 songs on it with the last song You Doo Right as the entire B-side. All four of the songs rock but my favorite is Outside My Door. I definetly recomend this album to anyone wanting to explore differnt, unique and obscure music as well as to fans of porg rock greats like King Crimson or Genesis. It also has a great album cover that just made me want to hear the album. I recomend this album to add to your collection and if you like this then explore deeper with Tago Mago.

perfect.......2005-01-06
It's a shame that Can has gone straight to the toilet in the late 70s/early 80s, especially when one looks back and considers their tremendous lineup of earlier works. Monster Movie is Can's best record, and arguably one of THE best rock records in the late 60s, period. Nothing came close to it, even in the so-called golden age of rock of 60s and 70s. Early Cans were so bloody good, they left even all the superstars like Zepplin, Floyd, and Hendrix in dust. Monster Movie managed to be gripping, hypnotic, and evocative at the same time. Melody flows and drips, like melted molasses, down an angular rhythmic foundation. It's impossible to overlook Can's fingerprints all over the roadmap of modern rock for many decades to come.
an impressive beginning.......2004-12-30
Of course, Can is the best rock group ever, so the four star review for Monster Movie is only relative to their other masterworks. This is a very good debut, with the group still finding its signature sound and putting out some interesting music in the process. None of the tracks are weak, but the two that stand out are those that bookend the album, Father Cannot Yell and Yoo Doo Right. Both build lengthy songs out of simple tunes and riffs, but do it with intelligence so it doesn't seem boring or redundant. Malcom Mooney is an interesting fellow - his voice is off-key and cracked but he sings/rants with an infectuous energy and intensity, and ultimately adds to the listening experience. Damo Suzuki's better, but it would have been interesting to see how Mooney would have developed as Can's vocalist. The rest of the band is brilliant throughout, in particular Jaki Liebezeit, the best drummer the rock world has ever known. Recommended for anyone interested in the experimental side of things, and of course a must for Can fans.
The Band That Started it All.......2004-01-19
If you are looking to complete your industrial or post punk collection don't fail to add this to your collection. While the later edition of Can with Damo Suzuki is more highly regarded this album is rawer and harsher and more powerful than the later albums. In other words, a minor masterpiece. Father Cannot Yell is like Atom Heart Mother twisted inside out. Mary, Mary so Contrary is the only weak track, a dated ballad. Outside my door is another blast of distorto noise. And Yoo Doo Right makes 70's Miles sound tame in comparison. One of Sonic Youth's favorite bands by the way.
Raw and powerful.......2003-10-19
Besides the brilliant cover art, this album also boasts some of the most gripping experimental music from the late 1960s.
The opening track Father Cannot Yell is a real stunner that reminds me of the Velvet Underground on tracks like European Son or White Light/White Heat with its raw pulsating bass, insistent keyboard and stuttering vocals.
Mary Mary So Contrary is a slow rock excursion with bluesy vocals, whilst Outside My Door is a powerful piece of acid rock psychedelia, not too dissimilar from Big Brother And The Holding Company's masterpieces like Piece Of My Heart or Combination Of The Two.
The long winding track You Doo Right is a 20 minute tour de force of impressive instrumental textures and varied vocals that captures many moods. It includes tribal drumming and veers from bluesy rock to world music to psychedelic textures.
Monster Movie certainly exerted a profound influence on post-punk music of the late seventies and eighties - Talking Heads and Public Image Limited being only two of the groups that come to mind. It remains a classic of brilliant power and has stood the test of time very well.
Here's where it all starts "mary, oh mary so quite contrary".......2002-12-11
Can's debut is just stunning, right out the gate with "father cannot yell" what a record! This was back with original vocalist Malcom Mooney, who just lets it all go on this record in the tradition of the truly possessed, he becomes at times hysterical in the energy he channels on this record, you fear that this much passion and terror and love and intensity coming from one person would kill them. And it nearly did. But the band can do no wrong here, this is when Karoli was still in his Syd Barrett meets Sterling Morrisson guitar phase, and it became a legitimate style in and of itself, but one he more or less discards after "mother sky" a little ways down the road. But back to monster movie, with that strange alteration of Jack Kirby's idea of god as a devourer, Galactus, on the cover. And this record will devour, oh listen to "Mary". One of the greatest rock songs of all time, one of the greatest guitar lines of all time (both the rhythm and the lead) and listen to Malcom get hysterical as he calls her name ("Marymarymarymarymarymary- marymarymarymarymary -MARYMARYMARYMARYMARY MARYMARYMARYMARYMARY") whoa. Incredible stuff. and there's more. Everything is great, the classic "Yoo doo right" it's all here, you need this record if you are interested in Rock music, experimental music, or experimental rock music, of which Can were indeed the kings.

Album Description
"To the Moon is about the blithe optimism found in sunrises and open highways, of the uplifting power of carefree pop. When the sun hits, it sounds like this." - SPLENDID
When the UK's Monster Movie graced us with their first full-length, Last Night Something Happened, one critic dubbed them "hideous boymen with a very secret but very beautiful plan for this world." Two years later, this plan continues to develop and unfold to glorious effect via their second album, To the Moon. The heady yields of Christian Savill and Sean Hewson's working relationship prove that vital songwriting duos are alive and well in contemporary rock `n' roll. Having ended a frustrating yearlong delay caused by an ill-timed artwork-related imbroglio, To the Moon is poised for takeoff. An album of celestial wonder and expanse, To the Moon soars to stratospheric altitudes via volcanic bursts of guitar distortion and delay. Darkly introspective lyrics, whose scope encompasses everything from arctic stars to ellipsis, reveal rare emotional depth and candor. As Pitchfork's Christopher Dare summarized, "It's clear that the album's meant to be a traveler's diversion, so maybe you'll enjoy it as a detour from your next trip to Souvlaki Space Station."

Product Description
This is transistor. This is the sound of our souls..... Thus the robotic whisper introduces Monster Movie's fifth release and third full length. And what do the souls of Christian Savill and Sean Hewson sound like? Harmonica, keyboard, guitar, and a drum machine ushering in the death of autumn. But before we all go pulling our hoods over our heads and gazing mournfully at our shoes, let us remember that these are the guys that draw hearts in snow drifts, bring light through black forest trees, and show little girls bursting from fallen apples.
Customer Reviews:
lovely Lo-Fi shoegaze space folk.......2005-06-09
Melodic little collection of melancholic songs from the mysterious ex-Slowdive members that no one has heard of. Reminds me of Belle and Sebastian at times and even Simon and Garfunkel. Cool guest female vocals and packaging. Only negative is that the disc is only about 20 minutes long. That's the way these guys are, they disappear as silently and quickly as they arrived, leaving us waiting for their next unannounced visit.
Recommended for fans of Lo-Fi, introspective indie, shoegaze

Album Description
The debut album from Monster Movie has hatched and is ready to walk around a bit. Written, performed & produced by Christian Savill & Sean Hewson, it is a landmark follow-up to their self-titled debut EP from 2001. The album, recorded between March and August 2001 at The White House studio in Weston-Super-Mare with Martin Nichols engineering (also the birthplace of their debut EP as well as Slowdive's `Souvlaki'), shows a move away from the layered guitars and strong vocals of the EP to a more somber, subdued & warm sound. Here the vocals are more often layered with Martin Wheeler & Louise Hewson, adding their vocals to those of the band, to create a ghostly, disembodied effect. The instrumentation is more varied here as well, with cheap keyboards and acoustic guitars mixing with radios, feedback & broken effects pedals to create a warm hum. As with the EP, the songwriting is still a strong point but Monster Movie have moved forwards, investigating instrumental so! ngs (witness the cinematic 'Star City') and structure (a la the Faust-like sudden change in 'Winter Is Coming'). Everything on here has a great tune even when it is layers of noise, but the most obvious pop songs are 'Waiting', 'Shortwave', 'Take Me Away', '4th & Pine' & 'Home' with 'Sleeping On A Train' providing a change of pace & some rock action. Monster Movie are known to be collectively fond of Grandaddy, Air, Yo La Tengo & the Super Furry Animals. They are also more likely to be influenced by their intense and occasionally psychotic dislike of most other rock music. Their individual tastes are not considered 'sexy' enough to be listed.

the perfect rainy day cd.......2005-06-08
beautiful chilling music. i keep falling in love this album over, and over again. if it's raining outside, put this cd on!
fave. tracks = 4th & pine, waiting, and shortwave
Better than Slowdive!.......2004-07-26
If you're like me and wish Slowdive/Mojave 3's former frontman Neil Halsted would stop trying to be Nick Drake and go back to composing the beautifully crafted pop we came to enjoy back in the early 90s, Monster Movie is for you. Monster Movie includes Slowdive's Christian Savill and pretty much continues where the legendary British band left off. This is truly dreampop and shoegaze at its absolute finest. Last Night Something Happened was my favorite album of 2002 and still one of my all-time favorites.
HIGHLY recommended for fans of Slowdive, Mahogany, Ride and Chapterhouse!
Excellent to the last note.......2004-04-09
Definitely a MUST BUY for fans of Slowdive. To put it in context, I place it a notch above Just For A Day and a notch below Souvlaki on the goosebump scale. It's easy to close your eyes and imagine it as the elusive Slowdive album that never appeared after Pygmalion was released. Additionally, Monster Movie blows rival siblings Mojave 3 out of the water musically - no contest.
Every song is great, and best of all it withstands repeated listenings beautifully. I never get tired of it.
Hauntingly beautiful music..........2004-01-13
This cd really surprised me. I bought it expecting the usual shoegazer type dreampop...but what I got was an album full of eerily gorgeous melodies and ambient soundscapes that could cloud over your dreams for a long time. This cd is amazing. I am trying to think of a good comparison for what this music reminds me of but it is honestly so unique and lush that It really stands alone in so many ways. It does remind me a little of The Notwist and The Postal Service in a lot of ways though. I love this cd so much! Buy it if you love ambient/dreampop/alternative with light airy vocals...
Eerie but beautiful.......2002-03-12
Their debut EP only hinted at what was possible, this album
realises the early promise and then goes beyond expectation
Monster movie feature ex members of Slowdive. There
are some similarities, but whereas Slowdive were
blissed out on life's youthful possibilities, Monster
movie seem blissed off, kind of weary. Slowdive's
landscape was soft and serene, Monster movie's is
bleak and wintery. The mood of the album seems dark,
confused even. Monster Movie deliver their
despondency with sometimes beautiful melodies
("shortwave" and "home") and sometimes with catchy
guitar pop ("waiting" and "Ooby").

Product Description
Welcome to Monster Movie's latest album, All Lost. The third full-length offering from Christian Savill and Sean Hewson, All Lost features supremely melodic and ethereal pop laden with distortion, otherworldly effects and strangely radiant drone. Vocals are clear and serene, and include meltingly lovely contributions from Rachel Staggs (Experimental Aircraft, Eau Claire). With twelve tracks of dreamy, crystalline music spun out of faraway starlight and falling shadows, this album will wrap your heart up in its pale blue shimmer and keep you forever.
