Goodbye Cruel World
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Costello calls this his worst record, but while its ticky-tocky "modern" (1984) production often smothers the music, Goodbye Cruel World does contain some great songs, notably the ballads "Home Truth" and "Love Field" and the anti-Reagan protest "Peace in Our Time." Rykodisc's CD is a necessity for at least two reasons: bonus tracks of Charles Brown's "Get Yourself Another Fool" and Richard Thompson's "Withered and Died," the latter not listed on the packaging. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
From the Label
This may be the most maligned item in the Costello catalogue -- not least by Costello himself who opens his liner notes with "Congratulations! You have just bought our worst album!" It's certainly the oddest album Costello and the Attractions ever made together, but that's not always a bad thing: Tracks like "The Home Truth," "Love Field" and the single "The Only Flame in Town" show a move toward the deeper, more challenging song structures that Costello would master in the '90s. Album Description
Throughout his phenomenal, almost 30-year career, Elvis Costello has proved himself one of the most versatile and inventive stars in the pop music firmament. He first rose to fame as one of punk rock's breakthrough talents then went on to release innovative albums interpreting a truly diverse range of genres. Costello-originally Liverpool's own Declan McManus-has made an indelible mark on the pop music songbook, bringing unfettered passion and profound lyrical weight to his richly creative stylistic adventures. These three titles continue Rhino's Deluxe Edition restoration of his extraordinary catalogue.
Customer Reviews:
Hard-Won Enjoyment.......2006-11-12
Reading the other reviews here confirms that people hear something in this album worth listening to. That's good to know since I've played it more times than I'll admit over the last 20 something years. And I've gotten considerable enjoyment from it too.
Sure, the production is inappropriate, but most of the songs are quite strong. Consider also the state of music at the time and how doggedly Elvis had been swimming against the current for so long. There are limits, of course: while we can understand the roots of Elvis' less-than-admirable bent towards self-pity, it will never redeem the wallowing of "I Wanna Be Loved." It's true that as a cultural artefact this song is fascinating, but it's a dismal listen in so many ways.
Someone here said their heart wanted to give this album a 5 star rating, but that it would be misleading. That's exactly how I feel. I've got a real soft spot in my heart for these songs, but it's all tied up with excitedly buying the album when it was released and a long subsequent history of coming to terms with it. If I imagine someone listening to this music for the first time today, I can't see them giving it a second chance.
I don't care if it is misleading, though - I'll rate this one with my heart.
Underrated Costello.......2006-08-27
It wasn't all that well-reviewed upon its release, and people tend not to remember it when they think of Elvis Costello's great albums from the early part of his career, but "Goodbye Cruel World" is a solid collection of tunes. You can hear Elvis getting more mature, less cynical and vitriolic than on earlier releases, but there are some gems here: "Peace in Our Time," especially, with it's assessment of the global political climate 40 years after the end of World War II. And of course, don't forget the "torch" song that kicks off the album, "The Only Flame In Town." A wonderful ballad, with assistance from Darryl Hall, of all people. Also interesting: "Room Without a Number", "Worthless Thing", "Home Truth."
Poor Napoleon's Waterloo.......2006-08-04
Tear off the cellophane & the liner notes greet you with, "Congratulations! You just bought our worst album !"
Prospects do indeed look grim. And perhaps this is Poor Napolean's Waterloo. Holding his life in his hands with an artificial limp wrist. It could be worse. After all, we're not talking about Billy Joel here.
But after so many years of pumping out classics at such a frenetic pace, he was bound to fall off his pedestal sooner or later. One listen to PUNCH THE CLOCK & it doesn't take genius to figure out a career crisis was right around the bend.
Personally, "Only Flame In Town" is a guilty pleasure of mine. Well, not "guilty". It's damn fine song. Like, "Everyday I Write The Book", it's a Pop song that makes no apologies for being such. Something you have to admire. And the spare, acoustic version on the bonus disc beautifully makes up for any over-production.
Though a woefully barbiturate take on, "I Wanna Be Loved" seems to have been the the official hit, the only true essential on here is " Love Field". The opening chords will never fail to stop you in your tracks. And as demos would later prove, "Deportee" & "Comedians" are great songs that never had a chance. Same goes for alot of the material on here. But hand a song over to Roy Orbison & you might as well kiss it goodbye.
With the possible exception of "Peace In Our Time", the rest of the album could be characterized as the sound of a man choking on his own piss & vinegar. Slapping on slick production to disguise that fact is the perfect recipie for disaster.
Throughout it all, self-loathing is all too evident. In fact it's something that would go on to characterize his next two releases. But where KING OF AMERICA took a knife & stripped things bare, & BLOOD & CHOCOLATE made gloriously cathartic racket, everything here just turns brittle & shatters.
To be fair, this is far from the worst record ever recorded. There are a lot of things out there far more deserving of that honor. That said, in terms of the high quality of Costello's past work, this is a somewhat dismal listen. For the devoted but discerning fan, it might just prove too painful to witness. Not only does the hero take a fall, he's the fall guy. And no matter how much bonus material you tack on, it won't put this Humpty Dumpty back together again.
Great Release, But Not So Great Bonus Material.......2006-03-07
I wanted to rate this a 4 star at first, I listen to the majority of the main discs songs often when I'm driving to work.
However the bonus disc for this brings it down a star, the majority of these demo's are not polished enough to be listenable unless your a fanatic (which I probably am but still). The levels are not set right and even the live songs on this bonus are kinda weak. If really rough versions of EC's songs are what you like than you'll like it but these were way to rough for me. I give the original release 4 stars and the bonus disc 2 so the average is 3. Definetly worth it for the first disc for any EC fan but maybe the prior releases are a nice bargain, you won't be missing anything by not getting the bonus disc.
a lesser "Armed Forces".......2005-11-16
I came to work with the intention of writing an embittered and overly-angry review regarding the negative reviews, but I've since calmed down.
A lot of people don't like this album. I can sort of understand why, and then again I really can't. The production? Personally, it's fine. It actually sounds like the first four They Might Be Giants records (which is not coincidental -- six years later, the same production team would produce the massively popular "Flood" album), excluding the intentionally overproduced "Only Flame in Town" and "I Wanna Be Loved."
Speaking of "The Only Flame in Town" -- nice as an eighties pop confection, but I'll only listen to it when no one else is around or while wearing headphones. The sax intro does permanently date the song, unfortunately. (Not to mention a quasi-duet with freakin' Daryl Hall.)
The other super-produced song, "I Wanna Be Loved," is actually quite excellent. Your liking of it will be based on how much you like synth noises and drum machine beats.
The rest sounds like a lesser "Armed Forces," frankly. It's not as good as most of his other albums, but it's not bad *at all*. It's sequenced nicely, and after the opening track, I never feel like skipping any songs. And the songs are amazing! "Home Truth," "The Comedians," "Worthless Thing," "Love Field," "The Great Unknown" -- all rather excellent.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks so highly of this much maligned album, but I certainly feel like it. Please, if you such people exist, write a positive review on here so I won't feel so lonely.
Even Costello hates this record, which made me want to hate it so bad, but I just can't.

Customer Reviews:
There's a great reason to choose this reissue over the 2004 edtion.......2007-02-26
There is one reason to get this version over the subsequent 2004 2-disc reissue--the last track on this version, "Deportee," is available nowhere else, and it's a pretty awesome, amazing song as an acoustic performance. It gives great insight, I think to how underserved this album was by 80s production values.
Pretty Awful.......2003-02-17
The sad thing is, I saw EC acoustically perform most of the songs on "Goodbye Cruel World" in April, 1984, two months prior to the orginal release date. Everything sounded great then! Elvis confided in later interviews that he realized during that spring 1984 USA tour, the already completed "Goodbye Cruel World" was indeed awful, but he could do nothing to stop the release of the record. Langer/Winstanley, the "hit producers" behind the band Madness, brought in everything but T-Bone Burnett's kitchen sink for "Cruel World," and the result is an embarrasing, over-produded mush of nothingness. At least no animals were harmed during the recording.
T-Bone Burnett, who had NOTHING to do with this atrocity, would fix things for Elvis on "King of America" two years later.
No fault of their own, but the Attractions, so brilliant on such '80s classics as "Trust" and "Get Happy," seem to be doped up on Valium here. Again, the blame must go to Langer/Winstanley.
The best performance on this CD is "Peace in Our Time," a politically charged lament. Langer/Winstanley controlled their impulses here. Ironically, the two best songs on "GBC's" predecessor, the overrated Langer/Winstanley production "Punch the Clock," were also politically tinged songs. Perhaps "L/W" were told by Elvis not to lay it on so heavy on these gems.
The best SONG on the album is "The Comedians," but you have to hear Roy Orbison's suberb version on his last album to appreciate this one.
Finally: Why is Daryl Hall singing on an Elvis Costello album?
Hey, it ain't that bad!.......2003-01-12
Goodbye Cruel World is definitely Costello's worst album, at least according to most critics and yes, EC himself. To that, I say nonsense. While it isn't one of his brighter moments, it's hardly the abomination it's made out to be. Essentially the problem with this album stems from one basic factor- the songs were good, but tended to be ruined by misguided arrangements and/or lazy, sterile production. (What happened? Well, with his marriage breaking up, squabbles with the record company, and tension with his bandmates, it's obvious that EC simply was unable to give his musical faculties proper focus.) For instance, "The Comedians" is a great song undone by a bizarre arrangement. For a far superior version, check out Roy Orbison's, or EC's own demo recording on the 2CD version of All This Useless Beauty. "Deportees Club" and the Bebe Buell lament "Room With No Number" suffer for similar reasons. "Worthless Thing" is sharp lyrically, but again, one wishes they'd found a better arrangement for the tune.
Despite all this, though, some of the songs still shine. "Love Field" is the one song where the album's approach totally works, a beautiful synth-based, vaguely exotic-sounding ballad. Also effective is the R&B cover "I Wanna Be Loved", which sounds nothing like what you'd expect from Costello, but still contains one of his most infectious performances. "Inch By Inch" creeps along quite nicely, foreshadowing the full-on menace of Blood and Chocolate's "I Want You". "Peace in our Time" may seem a little traditional by EC standards, but it's still a great closer.
Even though the songs on this album were not really given the best treatment, they're still great songs and it's still an extremely enjoyable album. I wouldn't recommend it to a newbie, but a true fan shouldn't have any reservations about picking it up.
Elvis goes Pop..........2000-05-18
Although the album was intended to thrust Costello and the Attractions into the pop mainstream that has eluded them (especially in America), it doesn't quite make it. Still, the lyrics are incredible, as always, even if the "pop" sound doesn't really fit. Best tracks--'Worthless Thing,' 'Love Field' and 'I Wanna Be Loved.' Steve Nieve makes a bigger impression on this album than any to date. His parts shine (especially on 'Love Field').
This album will only be truly appreciated by the huge fans. I love it but, if just a casual listener, I suggest "Punch the Clock" or "Trust." They're a little more accessable.
Get this for the bonus tracks........2000-05-13
Okay, so Elvis himself states in the first line of the liner notes that this is his worst album. (Which is not true as anyone who has listened to the album--not the song--Almost Blue, can attest.) It's an album with some great songs (e.g., "Love Field" "Inch By Inch") and some other pretty good songs that got a bit overproduced. But the real treat of this particular pressing is the bonus tracks. In order to compensate for the overproduction of the regular tracks, Elvis more than generously includes beautifully naked versions of "Motel Matches," "Sleepless Nights," "Withered and Died," and so many others. Plus, his version of "Baby It's You" with Nick Lowe is worth the price alone. Plus, his acoustic "Deportee Song" is just so much better than the rock 'n roll version also featured on the album. (Although the best version of the song can be found on "Bespoke Songs..." sung by Christy Moore ("Tere's a tousand years of history...")

Necessary Purchase.......2003-08-23
People buying a grindcore live cd are complaining about the sound production? SLAP YOURSELVES. This disc is essential to anyone who has any liking whatsoever to grind, death, or anything heavy. Both discs are golden, you can not help but headbang while listening to this album. The most influential grind band's last (double) cd. Get it!
bad production ruins this one.......2002-03-12
i love brutal truth and this was a great idea for a final hurrah but the production [stinks]. it was too hard to capture a brutal truth live performance on cd. either that or the playing is very sloppy. its still pretty good for a diehard brutal truth fan but a few songs are almost unlistenable because of the production. Listening to this album stoned actually makes it sound better though.
goodbye cruel world.......2002-02-19
brutal truth is one of my favorite death/grindcore metal bands. I loved extreme condtitions and need to control but this one doesn't do it as much for me because of the horrible production. it still contains brutal truths best songs live and about ten cover songs so its worth buying for anything brutal truth fan but its not a good introduction to the band. you get your moneys worth with the tracks though, theres over 2 hours of brutal grindcore here, but still the production brings this album down a lot, i say get extreme conditions demand extreme responses first.
thank you danny lilker..........2000-02-02
i would like to begin this review by giving thanks to danny lilker for leading me to this band...i have long been a fan of his, and bought into this band because of his presence...i may never have really given this style of music a chance were it not for his part in this band, and for that i say...thank you, dan...
now, for anyone that wants to know what grindcore is...this is it...i really cannot think of another band that has done it as well as these guys did during their years together...
this is an amazing set, but, for me, the jewel is disc one...a live performance of many of the band's classics...some highlights for me: choice of a new generation, jemenez cricket, sympathy kiss, and kill trend suicide have never sounded better...kevin bellowing out the vocals like an utter madman, gurn grinding away with riffs that are virtually unheard of in the genre, rich banging out every style imaginable across his set, and what can you say about lilker other than to simply utter the word, god...
buy this album, but do not forget the others...this is a band the likes of which we may never again see...
suicide album leaves with a bang.......2000-01-17
This is BT's final album, but at least they go out with a bang, actually noise carnage that resembles some of the best grindcore ever released. The first cd is a live recording from Australia, and while it does have it's tinny production moments, you'll soon forget them as you succumb to the sheer brutality (pun intended) to the overall massive attack that you suffer from the songs. "Walking Corpse": awesome. "Cornucopia" stunning. "Jemenez Cricket": shattering. The second disc is a culmination of other live recordings, covers and b-side one offs. Regardless, an essential purchase for the grind freak. Kevin, gurn, rich and danny shove their primitive foot through our weak skulls for the last time.

Costello calls this his worst record, but while its ticky-tocky "modern" (1984) production often smothers the music, Goodbye Cruel World does contain some great songs, notably the ballads "Home Truth" and "Love Field" and the anti-Reagan protest "Peace in Our Time." --Rickey Wright

Probably better than you remember it.......2007-05-06
I'll admit it, I recall that the first time I heard "Goodbye Cruel World," I was less than impressed. In fact, I was of the mind that it was the album where I wondered if Elvis' reach had finally exceeded his grasp. Even Elvis himself conceded the point on the Ryko reissue, with the now infamous "You've purchased our worst album" comment.
But time has given "Goodbye Cruel World" a finer burnish. The tug of war going on between Elvis himself, his band and producers Langer and Winstanley took some pretty darn good songs and "date stamped" them pretty solidly. That doesn't mean the songs are any less stellar. In fact, two of his strongest songs ever are here, the anthem "Peace In Our Time" and "The Comedians." (Although there's no way to escape the fact that Roy Orbison's eventual version completely trumps Costello's.) Along with "Shipbuilding," "Peace In Our Time" joins the great political songs that EC has written, and is even timely now.
"There's a man going round taking names,
no matter who you claim to be.
As innocent as babies, a mad dog with rabies,
you're still part of some conspiracy."
So why is this such a put upon CD? The unfortunate answer lies on the bonus disc from the 2004 Rhino double CD which, once again, took a three star album and pumps it up an additional star. Listen to the confusion, frustration and hurt in some of those demos, then compare them to the slickly produced final versions. Even the alternate take of "Only Flame In Town" took on a totally different personality, sounding more like a demo for Ray Charles than the peppy brush with the Top 40 that featured Daryl Hall.
The Rhino bonus disc also sported a couple of collector's faves, including a Madness b-side "Tomorrow's Just Another Day" (wherein Elvis suddenly rediscovered his English accent!), a live version of The Specials' "What I Like About You Most is Your Girlfriend," and a demo cover of the great "She Loves The Jerk" courtesy of John Hiatt. If you left this in the memory dustbin, maybe it's time you once again said hello to "Goodbye Cruel World," but I still recommend the Rhino version. Because as time has shown, Elvis at his (alleged) worst can trounce many artists at their best.
