After Everything Now This
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
After 1999's place-keeping covers album, Box of Birds (which neatly paid tribute to such obvious Church influences as Television, Neil Young, and John Foxx-era Ultravox, along with less apparent ones like Mott the Hoople and, yes, Hawkwind), Australia's longest-lived ether-rock quartet returns with a quietly enthralling collection of poetic, understated gems. The album starts with a pair of likely Church classics: "Numbers," a drone-pop masterpiece in which vocalist-bassist Steve Kilbey counts out an elegantly remorseful chorus ("Seven for the lucky pricks who went to heaven..."), followed by the single, "After Everything," the latest in the long line of lost-love songs the Church convey so well. Nor is the album without surprises: "The Awful Ache" time-changes in and out of a crunchy guitar break, while "Night Friends" sounds like a less misanthropic Pink Floyd. Throughout this self-produced 16th (!) album, Kilbey, guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes, and drummer Tim Powles show why they remain one of the post-punk era's most consistently satisfying bands, even if they are occasionally uncompromising to a fault (the atmospheric closing cut, "Invisible," drags on a bit long). The Church may never repeat the success of 1988's Starfish and its hit, "Under the Milky Way," but that's OK. After Everything Now This showcases a talent and sound that manages to keep maturing without ever growing old. --Bill Forman

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

beautiful.......2006-07-21
I love this cd, it is simply a beautiful album. Track 2 "after everything" will be played at my funeral. A haunting, serious and great work of art.
Indeed, a must have for any Church fan. .......2006-03-29
Now that several years have passed since "After Everything Now This" was first released, I truly appreciate this fine album even more. While "Forget Yourself" is a great album as well, it is by no means the "return to form" it was heralded as just prior to its release. "Forget Yourself" shows the band moving into a new direction, while "After Everything Else" actually seems to hearken back to some of the sounds that made The Church such a great act.
This album is not without its dull moments, though. I've read other reviews that declare that there are no filler songs to be found on this album, and I totally disagree. But what is a "filler" tune to one fan could be a "classic" to another. Just like religion and politics provoke heated arguments, try asking a bunch of Church fans what the band's greatest album is!
The opening track, "Numbers," is definitely a keeper to me. This particular track has a sound somewhere between what you'd expect on "Starfish" and "Gold Afternoon Fix." "Chromium," another of this album's standout cuts, has a sound that, at times, sounds like it would belong on "Starfish" and at other times would fit right in on "Heyday." This is certainly a good place to be!
In no particular order of goodness, I'm also partial to "Song for the Asking," "Reprieve," and "Invisible." Want to go all the way back to "The Blurred Crusade"? Put "Invisible" on and see if it doesn't bring back memories.
There is really nothing else on the album that stands out to me, but 5 solid cuts out of 10 isn't a bad feat. Besides, I'm as fickle as any other Church fan, and in a year or two I'll probably swear by the songs that sound dull to me now.
Just listen..........2006-02-12
It may seem silly to say, but from start to finish, this record is why music exists: to invoke emotion. Unlike others who may not agree, I found each song to possess its own identity, from the opening "Numbers" all the way to "Invisible". This album is thouroughly enchanting. My personal favorite, difficult as it is to pinpoint, is "Radiance". But then there's the equally ethereal "Night Friends". It's so hard to choose a favorite here, partly because of The Church's expert ability to create lush soundscapes and wrap them around the straight-from-the heart wordplay sung by Steve Kilbey, and partly because of the arrangement of the pieces is so well though-out, which comes through very nicely. I will even dare say more than once was the occasion where I was moved to misty eyes while playing this record. Somewhere in there was a tender spot that I coudn't stop the music from wafting into. And that, my friends, is perfectly alright with me. Say what you will, but for a piece of music to be able to have such an effect is why I am so very passionate about it.
Recaptures The Magic.......2006-01-02
If you were a Starfish/Blurred Crusade/Heyday fan, this album captures the sound and atmosphere of those great albums. While there is no stand out track like "Under the Milky Way" every track is a keeper. There is absolutely no filler on this CD. After you hear it, you'll want to play it over and over like all those old church albums.
After "Numbers," just OK........2005-08-06
The unremarkable "After Everything Now This," followed the superb "Hologram of Baal," which was the best Church album since "Starfish," and one of their best albums, period. It may have been unrealistic for fans to expect the same quality. In fact, the first song, "Numbers," released as a single before the release of the album, is powerful and memorable, and equals anything on "Hologram." Unfortunately, once you get past "Numbers," AENT, for the most part, meanders along with mostly average unmemorable songs.
While I do like "After Everything," "Chromium," and "Night Friends," I don't think they're even close to the band's best work. The other tracks don't make much of an impression, and some songs could use some serious editing.
If "Numbers" had been on "Hologram of Baal," instead of this album, I would probably consider "Hologram," the best Church album of all. Unfortunately, on AENT, that song is somewhat "dumbed down" by rest.
