Unwind
Editorial Reviews

This fine follow-up to Oleander's gold-selling 1999 effort, February Son, finds the quartet coming into their own, forging an identity in an often-faceless pop-rock field populated by the likes of Collective Soul and Candlebox. Fronted by the dynamic Thomas Flowers, the group has blossomed from their Nirvana-lite roots into something more original and expansive. Witness the darkly evocative "Are You There?" which moves easily into "Halo," a lilting ballad rife with strings. From the funky and spare "Benign" to the rah-rah rave-up "Jimmy Shaker Day" to the soaring and soulful, Lenny Kravtiz-like "Tightrope," there's nary a loser to be found. Unwind is most interesting on the harder-edged songs such as the raucous but taut "She's Up, She's Down." With stellar production, thoughtful arrangements, and well-crafted songs, Unwind is the kind of album that fans and radio programmers alike can embrace. The Sacramento-bred band may be named after a poisonous flower, but this burgeoning bunch is anything but toxic. --Katherine Turman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
Lovely mix of world beat and electronica.......2005-10-16
This album is a mixture of world beat including asian, indian and middle eastern rhythms and melodies, with an electronica feel. It is in the same vein, but softer than Dum Dum Project's mix of indian chants. I highly recommend it for meditation or yoga, but also just to relax while studying for a test or having to deal with any stressor. It is not sticky sweet, or cloyingly annoy as something like Enya (not all songs, but some) can be...You won't go use this for aerobics or running, so if you are looking for more up beat electronica with world sounds you should try the new Reboot- Music for the next generation from Om Records. Benefits from both CDs also go to charity, so that's bonus. For what this music is intended, i.e. lounge type chill with a world beat influence, it does an excellent job, and I highly recommend it.
Dept. store Music.......2005-07-07
This album is horrid, not genuine and drones on and on. Sorry I bought it. Prozac on a CD. A new drink coaster.
News for Yoga Fit instructors.......2004-07-02
I used this CD for my Yoga class last week and loved it. I want to let you know that this is the same CD that Yoga Fit sells as Zen Cafe - Dessert. At least this way you can listen to a sample before buying. It flows wonderfully and is a joy to listen to. I highly recommened it for anyone wanting to chill or use it for teaching yoga classes.
Step Into The Lounge.......2004-06-19
Ancient wisdom, calmness, gentleness, dignity, but also exotic and mysterious magic, strange beauty - these are the notions which the Buddhist culture evokes in our minds - no matter what culture or religion we stem from ourselves.
All these qualities are dealt with in the 14 tracks from ambient artists from Europe and the US assembled on this compilation. The DJ has selected them with knowing care and exquisite taste. Here modern western sounds meet with themes and topics from ancient oriental and occidental cultures.
Gentle but subtly effective trance grooves, moody haunting melodies, and soothing harmonies relax the listener and nurture his mind, soul and body in a easy and entertaining way.
Buddha Lounge 3 is out of the world !.......2004-05-12
I just recently got my hands on the latest installment of Sequoia Groove's Buddha Lounge series and it is even better than the previous releases in the series. Absolutely phenomenal ! It has many of my favorite artists along side some fantastic new European artists that I continue to discover through this series. I particulary enjoyed and recommend Nasser Kilada's sensuous middle-eastern number "Tarnima" , Alcyone's up-beat "Velvet Sutra, and David Gordon's cool and fluid "Bodhisattvas" which is a real departure from what I have heard from him in the past.
Buddha-Lounge 3 takes me to an exotically hip, down-tempo place that is just our of this world !

Didn't even like classical music until now!.......2006-05-15
When I read an article about how listening to baroque music composed with a 60 BPM rhythm could actually raise your IQ, relieve stress, and improve focus, I was intrigued. I did a search on Mozart, Handel and Bach - all were mentioned in the article, and then I came across The Mozart Effect series here on Amazon. I bought this CD as well as Volume 1:Strengthen Your Mind and let me tell you, it has changed my outlook on life. I feel absolutely healthier and happier after listening to only these two albums for a week, haven't tired of them yet! I plan on buying the rest of the series and enjoying their benefits for a long, long time.
Truly relaxing music.......2002-01-28
This CD was the start of my collection of Mozart music compiled by Don Campbell. I can listen to it day in and day out, before I go to sleep. The special frequency of the compositions is soothing and extremely relaxing. This is one of the most special albums I have ever purchased. If you want beautiful music for a massage; if you have trouble sleeping; if you just want to unwind, listen to this CD. You'll feel why.

Distracting Melody.......2007-02-17
I own a number of Dr. Thompson's CDs. Recently I purchased Unwind, Breathe, and Thunderstorm. Thunderstorm is wonderful---soothing, realistic. But Unwind has melody tracks, thus my 2-star rating. For me, this is not only distracting, but I tire of listening to a melody over and over. If that doesn't bother you, the quality of the CDs is excellent. I've yet to come across one of these that isn't.

Album Description
Raleigh, NC's purveyors of 60's-style pop are back with six songs of perfect melody, harmony, and beat stylings. This is the follow-up to their 2003 critically acclaimed full-length debut, "The Rosebuds Makeout", and the duo are in top form, delivering hooks galore and lush romantic ballads, too. For fans of The Kinks, The Shins, The Zombies, and Superchunk.
Customer Reviews:
outdoes the debut in half the time!.......2005-11-02
Nice and immediate, with two absolutely grrrr-eat songs: "The Beat Goes On" and "I'd Feel Better."
Review from the Synthesis.......2005-06-01
The Rosebuds are known for dabbling in many diverse genres while sprinkling pop-y hooks over each piece. Here on Unwind, the group runs the gamut from alternative rock ballads ("El Camino") to boogie-filled rock `n' roll. With six accessible songs of indie rock goodness, Unwind plays more like an album than an EP. The boy/girl duo of Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp plays a variety of instruments, including lap steel, piano and Fender Rhodes, helping to give each song a sense of completeness, yet avoiding the image of them just screwing around in the studio. The Rosebuds are able to tackle almost any genre as long as they spread their indie-pop sweetness over it.

Its Like Grunge Ballads.......2007-03-01
This is a great album for those who like Grunge Ballads. If you like songs like "sex and candy", "far behind", "wishlist", "force of nature", "glycerine", and "the day I tried to live" then check this out. This is like a new version of a combination of those, Oleander-style.
One song on this particularly, "Jimmy Shakur Day", sounds like it is meant to be like Nirvana.
Hilights include the releases "Yours if you like" and "Are You There?", the love-attatchment saga "She's Up, She's Down", and the remniscent "Back Home Years Ago". This cd is like the ballad version of the first cd (although "are you there?" is like "why i'm here" and I suppose "Yours if you like" can be reffered to as like "i walk alone". Anyway, most of the songs on here fall under the ballad or power-ballad categories. They accomplish this by also pulling off the modern rock of late 90s and now style and also the grunge rock style.
Much more credit is definitely needed for this band!.......2005-06-26
Please! I mean, come ON! This album is undisputedly better than just "4" stars. I know at one time it was above 4, or around a perfect rating- so let's keep it that way, people! Personally, this is the most catchy, excellent album by Oleander I own! Articulant lyrics and jamming, driving beats overlap beautiful melodies ( hence,"Halo") that help catapult me into jamming along. To demonstrate my foremost thoughts of criticism and approval, here is a track breakdown:
1. Come To Stay- Behold the ulitmate, energetic jamming opener! Great way to start off the album. It's like you start it and you just zip right through it. 9/10
2. Yours If You Like- REAL kickin' song. A hip beat, right-on-key guitar riffs and sincere, powerful drumming. One of my favorites. 10/10
3. Are You There?- This song was their first hit on this record, and don't get me wrong, it is distinctively marvelous, but it really isn't my favorite. 8/10
4. Halo- MY FAVORITE!!! A beautiful song with fascinating ballads, a dream-like theme, and hope concealed deep within this song of shining in the Heavens above. Very cool. 10/10
5. Benign- A real trippy, funky song that you can really grow on. (All of this time, I-LOVE-THIS-SOOONNG!!!)
6. Unwind- Not as good as the rest of the powerhouses; it can get monotonous at times, but still worth a listen. (Thank god it's only 2 min. 50 sec.) 6.5/10
7. Goodbye- A darker, more melancholic theme to this song, but in the end, you have NOTHING to lose. I especially love the lyrical quote about the roller-coaster ride colliding. Extremely compelling.
8. Jimmy Shaker Day- A very fast-paced winner with explosive riffs and hard hitting, fueled up singing and lyrics. 8/10
9. Back Home Years Ago- This song could probably make you reminisce back to when you were younger or even to a childhood. It's just like how they quote in it times come and honorable times go. 9/10
10. Tightrope- SLLOOWW, soft song that really has a feel for love and beauty, going too far, and ending up back at the start. Good riffage once it gets into the jammin' rock. 9/10
11. She's Up, She's Down- Not such a good song (not because it's BAD or anything, it just doesn't stick in your mind) I guess that means it's easily forgettable. This is really the only one I resent. 5/10
12. Champion- THIS really makes up for the last one; a great closer. Strive to win and shoot for the whole nine yards, never back down and keep fighting! Perfect song to salute to our troops fighting overseas. 10/10
That wraps it up. I sincerely hope this review will be helpful to you. If you don't have it, pick it up some time and give it a spin. You'll see what I mean.
The best of their efforts.......2005-03-24
I like Oleander alot, there is just one problem that I have with their music, they have yet to realease that definitive cd. I have all of their major album releases and each one is worth buying. The problem is there is always so much filler! The only reason I call this album their best is beacause the filler is of better quality on this disc then the others. "are you there?" "come to stay" "unwind" and "jimmy shaker day" all have a quality about them that hit you in the ear drum and force you to listen. However, the big downfall of Oleander is that they seem to be in love with the ballad, and their not very good at them. "Benign" and "tightrope" are ok but either then that the rest of the album is that filler I was talking about. Don't misunderstand me, I encourage people to pick up this album, not only that but get "February son" and "Joyride" too. That way you can make an awesome mix cd and get rid of the filler.
fun and catchy but heavy nonetheless.......2005-02-12
i heard "why im here", but wasnt too impressed.so in spring of 2001, i heard "are you there" and i was floored.grabbed the cd immeaditely and loved what i heard."come to stay" is a fun and fast opener and is easily one of the best songs on here."yours if you like" is another upbeat song, slower than "come to stay" and even incorporates a synthesizer (?)."are you there" youve probably heard once before and it is an absolutely amazing catchy rock song.two mellow tracks follow that arent bad, but tracks 6,7, and 8 pick things up."ugoodbye" is kind of sludgy while "jimmy shaker day" has a "hey!" chant breakdown with really choppy beats."unwind" is an amazingly well done song and is extremely hooky during the chorus.the only drawback to this cd is the inclusion of some filler tracks, but the others DEFINTELY make up for it.a great cd for fans of collective soul, american hifi, doubledrive, and socialburn.
Third rate Collective Soul..........2004-09-21
Alt/Metal band from Sacramento...nothing great but better than a lot of the heavy metal/rap crap out there today. I would rate them a third rate Collective Soul.

Pure Escape.......2006-05-11
Kavin Hoo continues to touch and stir to vulnerability through the emotive canvas of Pure Relaxation.
Having gone through a dreadful divorce that tore my soul into a million pieces, I am still made whole into the reflection of One, again, transported by his solemn-spirited musical sketches.
Listening to The Wind Beckons, my mind's eye envisions the silhouette of my heart [piano] filled with peace and faith as I walk in slow motion near fading waves [viola and violin pizzicato] as the sun says hello to the moon [cellos and bases] on my favorite west-coast beach. I can truely feel the wind [synths] on my face as it beckons a healing energy [oboe] assuring me that I can let go and live, again. Now, under the big sky my ears catch the Music of Nightfall. I feel the rhythm of my beating heart quicken as I hear a river of stars in a trailing comet across its span and I pause to pray a prayer of Awakening.
Thank you, Kavin , for your rapturous affection and penetrating daydreams... for opening the core of our souls.

Healing Music great for Reiki and others!.......2006-03-06
Since my Reiki practioner only had 1 cd that she uses for all her clients, I decided to break the monotony of her music by bringing this cd to use for my Reiki therapy and my Reiki practioner loved it that she uses it for all her other clients. The various music is relaxing and will not bore you and works well to complement any healing therapy. Highly Recommended!
