The Charlatans
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
England's Charlatans U.K. have grown considerably since they surfaced in 1990 as part of the Manchester dance scene. The band members have become solid songwriters and soulful, bluesy musicians who hint at what the Rolling Stones might sound like today if they hadn't become such pathetic geezers. Unfortunately, the band's self-titled album hasn't generated much excitement at home, and the group hasn't made an impact in the U.S. since its debut single, "The Only One I Know." It's a strong effort nonetheless, and a lot more satisfying than contemporaneous outings by kindred spirits the Stone Roses and Primal Scream. --Jim DeRogatis --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

"I Got Mine" and you can enjoy yours!.......2007-06-05
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
The Charlatans (Please do not confuse them with the 80's band Charlatans U.K.) unfortunately share a few things in common with the Great Society (Grace Slick). Both bands didn't get the respect they deserved at the time and that is a rock and roll disgrace. These groups were helping to carve the incredible sounds that would make the San Francisco music scene legendary.
By the time the Charlatans released a record there were too many years past and the line-up had shifted. That is why you'll find "The Amazing Charlatans" an essential archival release.
This collection puts together the 23 demos they had shopped in the creative period. The old story is now a broken record when a band can perform folk, blues, country, rock, jug band, and psych the suits don't have the knowledge or the patience to formulate a marketing strategy.
There is plenty of strong material to sink your teeth into. Please understand before the CD starts to play the Charlatans niche at this time did not involve an entry into the improvisational zone. Excluding the energy charged "Alabama Bound" that clocks in over 6 minutes, the rest of the tunes fall into standard range. They pack a lot of wallop with standouts such as "Codine" sometimes called "Codine Blues", "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away", "Walkin", and "The Shadow Knows."
Herb Greene the legendary photographer from the San Francisco scene that supplied numerous pictures for my book (Jefferson Airplane and Great Society) had photographed the Charlatans. If Herb took your picture there was something in your music that yelled out "Timeless."
If you want some Hot Licks from Mr. Dan Hicks it is part of the package.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

THE original San Francisco Sound.......2000-02-02
If you have any affection for the Psychedelic sounds of the 60s and want to get an idea of how it started, this is the Record to listen to: The Charlatans started it all, before the Jefferson Airplane, before Moby Grape and yes, before Grateful Dead. The group did release a record in 1969, but most of the original band members were gone by then and it is a rather mediocre affair. This colloction however brings together for the first time the songs that made them famous in the Bay area during their 1965 and 1966 heydays. Some of these songs may sound strange and not "psychedelic" at all, more like old fashioned good time music. But try to imagine their outfit, place yourself in the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco around 1966 and the music will fit perfectly. Listen to "Alabama Bound", their version of "Codeine" and "How Can I Miss You, When You Won't Go Away". I just wish there would be some live recordings salvaged from that time. But this collection is the only thing left and therefore the best there is.

Solid best-of collection from 1990-1997.......2005-08-18
Melting Pot is a sort of companion piece to Songs From the Other Side, both released at the end of the Charlatans' tennure on Beggar's Banquet records. While that other album contained the best of the b-sides, this is the best of the single and album material, and a very good collection it is. I seem to be in the minority here...I like The Only One I Know, Then, and other songs from that era, but not as much as the later material. The best songs on this collection, in my opinion, are Jesus Hairdo, Crashin' In, I Never Want an Easy Life If Me and He Were Ever to Get There, Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over, Here Comes a Soul Saver, Can't Get Out of Bed, Just Lookin', and One to Another. All of them are slices of British 1990's rock mixed with the best bits of late 1960's pyschedelic and Stones influences. If you've never heard The Charlatans, this and Songs From the Other Side would be great introductions.
Some of this great band's finest tunes.......2000-11-13
Everything From the dancy The Only One I Know and Opportunity, through their wilderness years of comparatively weak songs like Jesus Hairdo and Theme From the Wish (which overall don't worsen this much), and onto the scintilatng pop hits of North Country Boy, Just Looking and One To Another, is here.
Of course no 'Best Of' Collection will please everyone, and I have to say that Telling Stories' title track should've been here. Bullet Comes' sirly psychadelic touches would've been a good addition, and perhaps also a long-lost gem- Life Is Sweet, Chemical brotehrs featuring Tim Burgess on vocals.
Still, this shows why this is such a top band, the way they have seen in so many styles and kept following their own evolving path. And to correct the other review- they were not booted out by the record label, they chose to move on. So did Shed Seven for that matter.
Great musical journey of the band...but was it necessary?.......2000-07-13
I have never been a fan of 'best of' albums as they seem to be just a way of cashing in on fans, before dropping the band from the record company, as is the case of fellow Brit-Popper's Shed Seven and here to The Charlatans. Having said that, I bought it myself which renders my point useless.
The Charlatans are still to this day sadly overlooked, depite the fact that they are the soul survivors from the Baggy era and seem to improve with every album. This album shows you their smooth transition from acid-house to Brit-Pop and it includes some of the most memorable hits of the '90's.
'The Only One I Know' was the song that launched the Charlatans career using Hammond organ which has been prevelant throughout the bands career. Added to this are Tim Burgess' airy vocals typical of the so called 'Madchester' scene of the time. The equally impressive 'Then', hears Rob Collins use of Wurlitzer against Burgess's fine emotional tune.
The spacey 'Opportunity Three' sticks to the Baggy sound with psychedelic vocals and infectious bass and keyboards behind. 'Over Rising' carries on the album's high standard, this time incorporating backward vocals and excellent keyboard work from Collins showing how the band have remained distinct from fellow Mancunians The Stone Roses.
The repetitive 'Sproston Green' is saved by the rousing chorus and shows The Charlatans rockier side. 'Wierdo' relies too heavily on Collins' stop-gap organ sound (though he seemed to be enjoying it), and the album falls short of expectations for the first time. Its disturbing sound does fit, though, with the lyrical subject matter, and the song is partially saved by Mark Collins' guitar break.
'Theme From The Wish' is the first of two (unnecessary) semi-instrumentals which are odd choices for a best-of album. 'Patrol' sees the Chemical Brothers dabbing their hands into the mixing as the album reaches 1994.
'Can't Get Out Of Bed', 'Jesus Hairdo' and 'Crashin' In' were all written at a time when The Charlatans were unsure of their musical direction, and it shows as the songs fails reach the enthusiasm of Burgess' vocal performance. The psychedelic 'I Never want An Easy...' is one of the few songs from that year that really works on the album, as the song builds up to a great psychedelic-rock climax worthy of vintage Stones.
By 1995 The Charlatans were back on confident form shown by their willingness to produce the songs themselves. 'Just Lookin'' and 'Here Comes A Soul Saver' are the first examples of more thoughful, sensitive electric guitar being used by the band. Both tracks create a feeling not captured since their debut album 4 years earlier.
Then follows the first all out Brit-Pop tune - the cracking 'Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over' which points to the bands more melodic future.
Highlight of the album is the timeless rocker 'One To Another', taken from the bands hit album 'Tellin'Stories' (see my review). It captures the mood of the country during the Brit-Pop peak in the mid-90's and gave the band some rare recognition by being voted as 'single of the 90's' by music magazine, 'Melody Maker'.
The album concludes with the countryish 'North Country Boy' giving Burgess the chance to show his love of Bob Dylan that he would persue on the bands next LP 'Us And Us Only'.
Can't be called a great album, as it more a collection of hits. But as these money-grabbing marketing schemes go, The Charlatans' 'Melting Pot' is one of the most deserving.
Hop On Baby!!!.......1999-06-23
A cracking "greatest hits" collection from one of Britains finest talents. From the baggie opener "Only on I know" with it wonderful hammond sound courtesy of the sadly missed Rob Collins to the pop swagger of "North Country Boy",this would be a fine addition to anyones collection.
A must have!!!.......1999-06-02
While the Stone Roses never reached their full potential, the Charlatans have been going strong for ten years now. What can you say about a greatest hits disc? They are a great band, and if you like Brit Pop, you're gonna love this one. Check out the Chemical Brothers mix. Very cool. I know they are in the studio now, so the Manchester sound lives on!

Singled out.......2001-04-04
I don't know what it is about cd maxi-singles... often they're full of pointless remixes, and other times they've got nothing but sheer brilliance throughout the aluminum. This is somewhere in between.
The final two mixes of "Toothache" and "Patrol" are great stuff... and they ostensibly could have been put on one of the Charlatans' LPs without having to resort to the 'maxi-single' blues. The rest is fairly uninteresting, and it's decidedly not for die-hard Charlatans fans.
It'll keep up the interest of the electronica set, and is pretty useful in a DJ situation. But it's not essential.
charlatans remixed by Chemmies.......2000-06-10
If you're a Charlatans UK fan, you'll probably want to skip this. This single/EP is more of a showcase of the Chemical Brothers. It's remixes and such made by Tom and Ed of Charlatans songs. That said, it's pretty good. I mean, it's no DYOH, but it's good...I recommend it.

Charlies' Big Score.......2006-12-02
For starters, all the hits are here; the chronology is immaterial because the songwriting and performances are top notch. The remastering adds punch and, I feel, an overall edginess to each track. Listening to these songs, track by track, reaffirms that The Charlatans are a brilliant act; there is strength in their diversity; although the songs vary in approach, given the time frame, it is the absolute character of this band that shines through. I must admit, I have everything they've ever done, but this collection is still a stunner on all fronts.
A must for long time fans and and a great introduction for anyone interested in great music.

Manchester-bashers will be shocked by the third effort from the Charlatans, which bares nary a trace of the hollow psychedelic dance-pop that became synonymous with that town and this band in the late '80s. Up to Our Hips has a slow, bluesy feel and strong, well-crafted tunes. Maybe the band sobered up after keyboardist Rob Collins was arrested for armed robbery; maybe it gleaned more than style from its new-found love for German art-rockers Can, or maybe it was the influence of unlikely producer Steve Hillage of Gong. Whatever the case, Up to Our Hips is a substantive, rewarding effort .Jim DeRogatis

I've haven't heard all but one song on this album more than once, but I remember how awesome it sounded! I love the song "Can't Get Out Of Bed". These guys are pretty good. I'm gonna recommend this album!
Phenomenal rumblings of greatness here..........2006-09-28
Up to Our Hips was the Charlatans' third album and is up there with the two albums that followed it (1995's self-titled and 1997's Tellin' Stories) as among their absolute best. This album features heavily the funk and groove of the Charlatans, especially their excellent rhythm section. From classics like Come In Number 21, I Never Want An Easy Life...., Can't Get Out of Bed, the exquisite Jesus Hairdo, and the title track to the rest of the album, there is hardly a weak moment on this disc. I would start with the two albums following this if you're just getting into this band and then move immediately to this one...it's superb and the grooves can't be beat. Tim Burgess' vocals are hushed and intense while the burn of the band behind him is fantastic. A phenomenal album.
Up To Our Hips- The Charlatans.......2006-08-28
Had this on tape and loved it. Wanted to replace it on CD because this is just timeless and a diamond in the rough. I def. recommend for you folk/rock lovers out there who tend to stray from the mainstream!
A step down from the Charlatan's previous two albums.......2006-02-11
As a Charlatans' fan, I have to disagree with most of the other reviews, in that I think "Some Friendly" and "Between 10th and 11th" are better and more exciting albums. Although "Up to Our Hips" sounds like it may have been better engineered than the previous two, I find about half of the album tepid, or, in the case of "Can't Get out of Bed" and "Jesus Hairdo," too "sing-songy," if you get what I'm saying. I do like "I Never Want an Easy Life," "Autograph," "Patrol," and "Inside-Looking Out" (once the last mentioned stops sounding like the old Peggy Lee standard "You Give Me Fever"), but really, other than possibly "Autograph," I don't consider any of these songs to be in the same class as "The Only One I Know," "Then," "Sproston Green," "Tremolo Song," or "Weirdo," not to mention some other great songs that came later. "Feel Flows" is interesting in a druggy sort of way, but grows tedious after several listenings.
I guess I could say I like, but don't love, about half of this album, and prefer the Charlatans' prior two releases quite a bit more. But since this and other Charlatans albums have received precious few reviews (as compared, e.g., to the number of reviews for the Stone Roses and Oasis), I feel a certain kinship with other Charlatans fans, and can appreciate the fact that others liked this album alot more than I did.
Brilliant.......2005-08-05
When it initially came out, this album was crapped on by critics and fans who said the album had little focus and even less soul. This couldn't be further from the truth. I've followed the Charlatans since early 1990 and they would never surpass this incredible album. Although I love all of their releases in different ways, this is the one I always come back to. If you're a fan of Britpop with a lovely slice of Hammond organ in the background this is worth every penny you could spend on it (and lucky for you, it's probably not selling for much more than a few pennies when you find it used). Full of punchy production, hushed vocals, and a great drum mix you're unlikely to find another disc from this genre and this stage in the 90s that can surpass this one.

For those complaining about the lack of longevity from modern rock bands, we point you to The Charlatans UK. Sixteen years and nine studio albums into their career, Simpatico finds these Northwich baggy veterans not quite at the top of their game, but endeavouring to drag their groove-led Hammond rock sound into intriguing new territories. Most interesting is an apparent influence of dub reggae on the traditional Charlatans sound, an influence that crops up on the coolly cynical "For Your Entertainment" and again on "City Of The Dead", a ska-tinged harmonica lament accompanied by haunted backing vocals that harks back to the urban decay of The Specials' "Ghost Town". Less successful is "NYC (There's No Need To Stop)"--an apparent stab at the voguish Big Apple punk-disco as practised by LCD Soundsystem, but one that suffers from clumsy execution, and isn't helped along by frontman Tim Burgess' rather clichéd lyrics: "Underground counterculture/Eat you up like a hungry vulture". Newcomers will find The Charlatans' back catalogue a more rewarding place to start, but fans will be delighted there's more to Simpatico than simple organ-riffing retread.--Louis Pattison
Album Description
The first U.S release in five years from the Charlatans U.K finds the band reestablishing itself as one of the legendary Brit Pop bands. By combining the swirling guitar psychedelica that has influenced everyone from The Stone Roses to Oasis and updating their sound to incorporate hints of dub and reggae, SIMPATICO. is an album that finds the Charlatans UK dancing with brilliance on a most welcome comeback.

Customer Reviews:
Reggatta de...Burgess.......2007-03-09
In my opionion, the first track, Blackend Blue Eyes should have been on a James Bond soundtrack. It is HUGE sounding with a backing string section, er so it sounds. NYC is dancy and funky and all around a good time. In short the rest of the album is something entirely different than the first two tracks. Something different but still very good (though not typically Charlatans). It is steeped in 1980's reggaefied new wave/punk of that era (Police, Clash, Specials, Elvis Costello etc.) Some tracks echo roots-rock from that decade as well. A very good collecton of music but not as much an album as was Up At The Lake. Recommended.
A great, solid album.......2006-11-16
Simpatico is the Charlatans' most recent album (as of 2006) and while it isn't their best album, it is still an excellent document of their later period (and current) sound. The album opens up with a classic Charlatans track, Blackened Blue Eyes, which ranks up there with their best singles. It's followed by NYC, which is pretty lightweight but fun, although the lyrical cliches are a little cheesy. It seems that the Charlatans are determined to have a song that harkens back to 2001's Wonderland on each subsequent album (NYC and Feel the Pressure off of 2003's Up at the Lake). Anyway, this album does contain some great songs, like Dead Man's Eye, The Architect, For Your Entertainment, City of the Dead, and Road to Paradise. There are also some weak tracks, like Glory Glory, which is rather plodding, and the weak album closer, instrumental Sunset and Vine.
Overall the current Charlatans sound seems to incorporate a lot of dub and reggae, which is not a bad thing since they seem to be able to incorporate it with their traditional British Rock style so well.
All in all, while this isn't their best album, it is a solid and worthy addiiton to their catalog and one worth checking out.
Simpatico is Fantastico!!.......2006-08-30
Simply put, this album is great through and through. The Charlatans UK have really put together an album that is worthy of praise. It is one of those albums you want to listen to over and over again. I am a fan from back in the day of Some Friendly and I am glad to see they are peak form again.
Best of late Charlatans.......2006-06-17
This CD definitely marks a return to the Charlatans I love. I have all of their CD's and I would put this in the top third. If anything, because of the first two songs (Blackened Blue Eyes & NYC). Other favorites include Muddy Ground, the Architect and Road to Paradise. The songs do tend to be slower than on past releases but who is to say that is a bad thing? They are not ballads, they are just a little slower paced. My one problem is with Sunset & Vine. While definitely not a bad song, I was expecting more from an instrumental. I think this was a good example where they could have sped things up a bit.
Hooked.......2006-06-13
Nice return for the Charlatans. I've been a fan since Indian Rope and Some Friendly, but this is one of the better albums - have been playing it every day for a few weeks now. Great stuff.

yes, yes it is. I had put this album off til last to complete my Charlies collection. I have no idea why. This along with Wonderland and Simpatico are my favorites. Amazing amazing amazing
A Fantastic Album and a Return to Form!.......2006-10-19
Up at the Lake, released in 2003, is the Charlatans' follow-up to 2001 experimental and somewhat weak Wonderland album. Up at the Lake is different yet it retains all of the classic Charlatans elements. Let me explain.....
The overriding theme of this album seems to be love, in all its forms and all the feelings that go along with it: joy, loss, pain, happiness, and everything in between. It's a fabulous record, however. Gone are the dance-beats of Wonderland (except for the second track, Feel the Pressure) and we're back to the sounds that made the Charlatans so excellent...great SINGING from Tim Burgess (here he uses the falsetto when appropriate, to much better effect that its constant use on Wonderland), great bass and drums, keyboards, and killer guitar licks and textures. And the songs....
The album starts with Up at the Lake, a rockin' little number. Feel the Pressure is probably my least favorite track on the disc...it sounds like it was left off of Wonderland and is pretty out of place here, although it's an enjoyable listen nontheless. As I Watch You in Disbelief reminds me of mid-1970s Bowie and is really exciting. Then we get to the meat of the album, which are the "love" songs, and they're all great! From the melancholy of Loving You Is Easy, I'll Sing a Hymn, Cry Yourself to Sleep, Try Again Today, and the somber album closer Dead Love, to the more upbeat rockers like Blue For You, High Up Your Tree, Bonafide Treasure, and Apples and Oranges, the album doesn't have a low point. Truly excellent and showing that the Charlatans are in no way slowing down at this point in their careers.
One note to make...you must get the UK edition of this album, which is the complete album. All other versions are missing the track I'll Sing a Hymn. Find it used or as an import, but that's the one to get.
FIVE STARS.......2006-07-04
Excellent album! Not what I was expecting but still excellent. This is part of the Charlatans Trilogy of solid albums, Some Friendly, Tellin Stories and Up at the Lake. But I do love all their music. I don't care for this album cover though. It doesn't fit the music, too dreary. Johnny Marr did an excellent job of compiling the tracks. FIVE STARS!
Buyer Beware.......2005-05-01
Before you purchase this CD, check amazon.co.uk. The British version has an extra track and costs about $7.00 less than this version (in spite of being air mailed from Europe). Trust me, the extra song and money saved are well worth it.
WOW...their best since "Tellin' Stories".......2004-12-10
Why hasn't this record been released in the US yet?? After 2 very disappointing records (Wonderland and Us & Us Only), the Charlatans have made their best record since 1997's Telling Stories. This is a fine return to the grooves and sways that we always knew they were capable of. I just bought this CD, but it has made it into the top 10 of the year. Great job, Charlatans. Thank you for giving your old fans a reason to still care. Not their best (that would be Up To Our Hips), but still a brilliant record!!

Charlatans were originals for their time.......2003-06-14
The Charlatans were one of the original bands of the outgrowth of the San Francisco bohemian period of the sixties. Even though the sound quality is not top notch, this album is a good representation of the band in it's heyday with some really great eclectic songs of the psychedelic era. There is some first time blending of country, folk, blues, and New Orleans style jazz with rock'n roll instrumentation. The band was best when experienced live due to their high energy level, but these recordings are the next best thing and can bring back memories of a time that one can only smile upon.
Glad it's being released again but..........2001-12-15
Before you buy this, buy "Amazing Charlatans" (available at Amazon). Because by 1969 when this LP came out, most of the original members (including Dan Hicks) were gone. Especially the Charlatans signature track "Alabama Bound" sounds here a little mechanical if compared to the spirited group vocal version which was recorded back in 66 (and is on Amazing Charlatans). Still, if you really dig the San Francisco sound of the sixties, this is a must buy. It may also not be neglected, that some of the tracks on this album are actually really good. Van Dyke Parks "High Coin Baby" is the opener and the vocal harmonies are superb. The same goes for some other tracks.
I own this LP in the CD version which was released by the french company EVA some years ago. I will buy this as soon as it's out in the hope that it will offer better sound quality. What I am missing from the track listing are bonus tracks.
By the way, a good read on the subject is Joel Selvins book "The Summer Of Love" which covers the story of the Charlatans, Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother etc. extensively. That's the mood you should get into: Read the book and listen to CDs by the Charlatans. Far out, man!

Customer Reviews:
A really good debut album from the Charlatans.......2006-12-01
Some Friendly, the debut from the Charlatans, is actually a very good, although somewhat slightly dated, album. Released in 1990, it contains two of their best ever songs, The Only One I Know and Sproston Green. Sproston Green in particular is just wonderful, with a haunting melody line played underneath the vocals.
Other songs on the album that are really good include the opener You're Not Very Well, Believe You Me, White Shirt, Opportunity, Then, and Flower. Sonic is probably my absolute least favorite track on the album, but still one I listen to, as it's OK. This album was the first and only release with their original guitarist (who is alright, nothing special). Second and current guitarist Mark Collins, who is MUCH better, joined shortly after this album's release.
Anyway, a good debut, really great swirling British psychedelia powered especially by Rob Collins' organ and keyboard playing. Check this out...don't get it as your first Charlatans disc, but definitely add it to your Charlatans library.
(four and a half stars) I heard a song on the radio . . ........2006-02-04
It must have been about fifteen years ago that I heard part of a song on the radio containing this unique swirling 60's styled psychedelic sound -- including a Hammond organ. After attempting to figure out what the song could be, and the performer of it, I tried in desperation to call the station I heard it on and singing into the telephone what I could recall of the song -- to no avail (this was years before one could get this information from the internet). Anyway, eventually I heard the song again, and it, of course, was "The Only One I Know," by the Charlatans UK, so I immediately rushed out to purchase "Some Friendly." Half a dozen albums later (and one concert in a small club) and I'm still a fan.
Actually, as it turns out, the aforementioned "The Only One I Know," became my second favorite song on the album, surpassed by the even better "Then," with that amazing bass line complimented perfectly by the omnipresent organ. The shimmering nostalgic feeling of "Sproston Green" concludes the album on a high note. Other highlights for me are the opener "You're Not Very Well," and the lively "Believe You Me," but there really isn't a weak link to this very fine album.
Obviously, it's natural to compare The Charlatans to the Stone Roses and Oasis. To me, the Stone Roses debut album sets an almost impossible watermark. The music is richer and more complex, and the Roses clearly had the more talented musicians. However, as pointed out in a previous review, the Stone Roses star burned too bright too soon, whereas The Charlatans play on. As far as Oasis is concerned, I've always liked the Charlatans more, although I can see how one could argue that the Charlatans could not match Oasis at their best (certainly not in cd or ticket sales).
The unfortunate thing about the Charlatans is that I think "Some Friendly," remains their freshest and best album to date. In later albums, the band would include too many songs that were unmemorable and, at times, somewhat dull. Even so, The Charlatans really should have been better known in the U.S.A. based on their first two albums alone. Just consider how few have reviewed "Some Friendly," and you'll see my point.
The 80s.......2003-07-17
After hearing 'The Only One I Know' on internet radio I came here to buy the album. I was confused at the date amazon gives as 1998 release since i couldve sworn i'd listened to this album a number of times in my highschool girlfriends bedroom. After a little research my thoughts were correct as this album came out in 1990. So i called up some friends and asked around to see if anyone i knew had the album. why buy it? instead i'll check out Melting Pot or Wonderland.
What i enjoy about this album is the way its a perfect ending to the 80s sound. Alot like listening to an Echo and the Bunnymen album but without the horrible nostalgia of 7th grade science experiments. The whole album has a wonderful 60s vibe to it with influences from groups such as the Byrds. Its a nice album to listen to while driving through the country with the top down.
The only one I have........2003-03-23
Though the whole album is pretty good, "The only one I know" is definitely the high point. Most of the disc has a good groove to it, and has alot of organ throughout. Some tracks dancy, some trippy. It simultaneously sounds retro and modern, and is good thing just to put on and enjoy. They also have a "best of" called "Melting pot", you may want to try that out. Either disc should fit well between your "Happy Mondays" and "Stone Roses" cd's.
Uneven album hints at later promise.......2002-03-01
The Charlatans UK were one of the preeminent bands to come out of London's Madchester scene, and their debut album, Some Friendly, shows signs of what the band would become on later albums. Taken as a whole, Some Friendly is a scattershot album that shows promise. On one hand, it is the album that introduced the dance scene to the Charlatans with their monster early `90s hit "The Only One I Know." "Opportunity" is a standout, with its spacey, atmospheric feel, as is "Then," which is driven by its strong bassline. However, the high moments are too few. Opening with "You're Not Very Well," the Charlatans catch attention with the track's springy beat and buoyant Hammond, however they all but repeat the song three times on "Polar Bear," "Believe You Me," and "Sonic," with "Sonic" being the only decent song of the three. Perhaps no other track sums up Some Friendly more than "Flower." "Flower" employs yet another strong bassline and a piercing guitar intro, yet the lyrics do not live up to its initial expectations. There is definitely promise to be found on Some Friendly, yet the album is a stark contrast to the heights the band would achieve on later albums.
