Truncated.......2007-02-19
I have only one objection to this album. She sings only 2 choruses of "To Keep My Love Alive" while the orchestra keeps playing the music over and over. A lyric like that, and they play just the music! There was plenty of time to put the whole lyric in. "If I Were You" (an imitated idea, most notably to my mind by Adams & Strouse in "All American") is a knock-out, and on this one she sings both verses (there is only one chorus). Highly recommended (if you can find it) anyway. "To Keep..." can be heard in it's entirety on other recordings, like on the revival cast recording of "Connecticut Yankee" by Vivienne Segal (on 2 releases!). Now if someone would just record the complete lyrics of "Mt. Greenery" and "Manhattan" - for a change!
a hidden classic.......2006-10-07
Von Stade is in very fine voice on this CD, and her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is one of the best ever, with a rich, expressive delivery. Her voice has sometimes been considered too operatic for pop material but on this she's just right. Other standouts are "Moon Of My Delight" and the playful "To Keep My Love Alive" but the whole album is solid.
Wonderful record.......2002-11-11
A wonderful record !! Mrs. Von Stade's voice is perfect. I also raccomend this recond because all the arrengments are recreations from the original shows.
exquisite album.......2000-11-10
Contained in this CD are some of the most beautiful versions of the great timeless songs of Rogers and Hart. Coductor John McGlinn's orchestrations are flawless, as are Frederica's vocals. My favorites are 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was', 'My Funny Valentine', 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered', 'Atlantic Blues' and 'A Ship Without a Sail'. Every song is well done and everyone I have turned on to this album loves it.

Customer Reviews:
Know you're the enemy.......2001-04-16
The Manic Street Preachers might be the most aptly named band I've ever heard. They've always been a bit too smart for the States, and that might explain why "Know Your Enemy", their most American radio-friendly album to date, won't get much airplay here. Well, that, and the theme of the album, which is a wonderfully scathing indictment of the Americanization of the world.
The first two singles, "Found that Soul" and "So why So sad" make a nice introduction to the album - calling up the ghosts of Joe Strummer and Brian Wilson respectively. "Year of Purification" might be the best song REM never wrote.
Although I'd probably get smashed over the head with something if I ever mentioned it in front of the Manics, this album reminds me, above all else, of U2's "Achtung Baby". Not so much as the album sounds like U2, but that it seems like a radical re-working of a band, a new direction, embracing irony, maturity, and technology. Listening to "Miss Europa Disco Dancer" or "Wattsville Blues" makes me think of, well, "Zooropa" and "Numb".
The standouts, though, on the first few listenings of the album are the final two 'proper' tracks - "Baby Elian" and "Freedom of Speech Won't Feed My Children". It's strange to hear a perspective of the Elian debacle that so closely matches my own, considering that I actually live in Florida, and I don't think that these Brits have ever even visited the State that threw the election.
The Manics will probably never live up to the frenzied brilliance of "The Holy Bible", and they might never again capture the earnestness of "Everything Must Go", but "Know Your Enemy" is still better than 99% of the music you'll hear on the radio today.

Customer Reviews:
Known by their enemies..........2001-05-18
This album on a first listen told me the manics had grown up, not mentally, but musically. Everyone expects them to be guitar, guitar, guitar, and there are some tracks on this album that suggest that, Intravenous Agnostic and Found That Soul. It is the genius of the tracks like, His Last Painting and The Convalescent that demonstrates James Dean Bradfield virtuosity on the guitar. It may have the traditional cheese like Miss Europa Disco Dancer, but it is still enjoyable to listen to, instead of reaching for that skip button. My own personal favourite track on the album is Baby Elian, i feel that the muscical side is one of the best the manics have written and the subjectof "America the devils playground" is not just political but the manics angst at not being able to break into the American Market. Compared to the last two albums, Everything Must Go and Thids Is My Truth..., the latest offering develops very strongly and is indeed high above the other two. Although it cannot really compete against The Holy Bible, the unbeatable testimony to the great Richey Edwards. What I want to know is who are the enemies? Is it the critics who were "useless and dangerous" (futurist manifesto) or the americans.
