Grand Prix
Editorial Reviews

Armed with a sharp new drummer and outside producer David Bianco (Pixies, Tom Petty), the three veteran members of Glasgow, Scotland's Teenage Fanclub were determined to redeem themselves after 1993's wretched flop, Thirteen. Grand Prix, the group's fourth full album, is fresher, more direct and less cluttered than its predecessor, but it fails to match the grungy exuberance of the band's debut or the Big Star jangle of 1991's Bandwagonesque, which remains its best effort. --Jim DeRogatis --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
One of the half dozen best albums of the 90s.......2007-03-17
There's already a couple of well-written reviews here and there's not a lot I can add, except to say that this album is special to me and it's always one you can come back to whenever you feel you feel you're losing your faith in music to make you FEEL something. It's not quite perfect, but it's not far short. And when it peaks with About You, Sparky's Dream and Don't Look Back, it's simply gorgeous. It's an album that has enough power to define certain times and places when you listened to it. It reminds me most of walking across the small island where I live in Hong Kong a couple of years ago: a warm, sunny Sunday morning, sea all around, other islands dotted around in the South China Sea, on my way to meet some friends. When music can preserve a moment in time, it's priceless. This is priceless. It's beautiful.
Best Fanclub Album.......2006-11-10
I was first turned on to these guys when I was in middle school (over 10 years ago) and I love them as much today. This is by far their best album for listen ability throughout. I love 'Bandwagonesque' as well, but there are a few throwaways on that album. This is easy-listening rock at it's best. I recommend this album if you know anything about rock.
Best Band - You Don't Know!.......2006-08-11
This album is great. From beginning to end. If you don't know now you know. Listen to all the other great reviews for more confirmation! It's great mix of music you recognize, and songs that will have you listening to more. If you don't own a Teenage Fanclub album, this should be your first. You'll be going back for more. While other albums may be hits and misses. This one is a deff. HIT!
One of my all time faves.......2006-03-02
This is a fantastic album. The fact that 5 star reviews are still being submitted over 10 years after its release (and they're not the beatles or u2 or anything) should speak volumes. I have played this CD countless times over the years and I am amazed that I am not sick of it. I am a pretty constant consumer of new music. Get this CD - you won't regret it! (PS I've never done an Amazon review before, but the fact that this has had only 22 motivated me). It is melodic, catchy, uplifting and cheeky - in short, a little piece of musical bliss.
Say Yes And Play Grand Prix.......2005-10-29

Grand Prix of Gibraltar.......2006-11-10
This is a classic. This captures the very essence of SCCA road racing for anyone who was involved in it in the early days. It was a time when almost anyone could afford to go racing, and the sport drew a truly colorful group of people who were endowed with a great sense of humor. Win or lose, the sense of fun was always there...I know, I was one of them.
The Grand Prix of Gibraltar.......2006-06-26
A real classic that will delight all who are keen on the history of motor racing. We found it just as delightfully funny as we did when we first heard it!
Funnniest record ever.......2004-12-01
I am so glad to see that Grand Prix has been remastered. I knew this recording in the 50's as Grand Prix du Rock and have been looking for a copy of it for at least 40 years. You should see the little scrap of paper in my wallet with Peter's name on it so I wouldn't forget who recorded this album. A friend who is an e-bay junkie, tried to find it for me on your website. And voila - there it is. That is so awesome! Peter Ustinov has to be the funniest actor on "record".
Absolute Comedic Genius!.......2004-10-26
Peter Ustinov was one of the funniest people to ever live. Clearly a genius of the highest order. "The Grand Prix of Gibraltar" is a great example of his remarkable craft.
I actually bought a copy of "Sports Cars in Stereo" (the 1958 Sebring Grand Prix) in the mid-1960's when it was fairly new. Stereo was fairly new. The idea of having these fabulous racing cars screaming across my living room, fascinated me (I was about 9 years old.) The next time I was in that store, I bought Peter Ustinov's "Grand Prix of Gibraltar." I actually didn't think much of it at the time. But as I grew older and became even more enamoured of sports cars and racing, "Gibraltar" started to grow on me. Eventually I came to realize what a brilliantly funny piece of work it was. I have heard it dozens of times, now, and I can attest to the truth of the other reviews. The man was incredible and hilarious. There is one tiny error in one of the other review. Every voice and sound effect, save one, came out of Sir Peter's mouth. That one was the sound of a hammer hitting a piece of steel. Clang, clang. That would be an impossible sound to make with a voice, and besides, it was also the only sound that was added after the single recording session.
It might seem corny on first hearing, especially if you don't know any of those names. Ferrari is a household word, but Moss, Gordini, Von Tripps, Fangio, Neubauer, Phil Hill (my greatest childhood hero) may not be so familiar. If they mean something to you, then you're going to love this record. The more I listened to it, the more subtle humor began to dawn on me. It got funnier and funnier until I couldn't help laughing out loud. Nobody else in my home understands it, so I feel like a fool, but I can't help it.
Peter Ustinov was a great actor and comedian. "The Grand Prix of Gibraltar" is gem of tremendous value! I wouldn't be without it!
One of the greatest recordings of all time!.......2004-03-31
Sir Peter died yesterday and that sad event caused me to check to see if this masterpiece had finally been reissued. I've been surviving with a cassette copy of my uncle's original LP for over 30 years. Of course, I don't really NEED the recording at all, since I've had the entire circus/nightmare committed to memory since about 1970. Like Kubrick movies, Jean Shepherd, Stan Getz and Monty Python, it's just part of what I am.
In interviews for auto magazines Ustinov often said that, as a boy, he was actually a car and "Gibraltar" proves he wasn't kidding. If your idea of a great sound effects man is the guy on "Prairie Home Companion" you definitely have another thing coming. I have not heard every comedy record ever made, but I'd be shocked to find another vocal performance that comes close to "Gibraltar". It's simply stunning, completely insane and utterly life enhancing all at once.
At age 45, I'm actually quite young to catch all the 50's personalities and references Ustinov winds into this mad, largely improvised radio play for the car crazed, but I grew up reading old racing books in the school library, so the dead-on parodies of Moss, Hill, Neubauer, Ferrari and all the rest have been breaking me up for decades.
But all of the other people I know who love this record are much older than I (or dead, even) and unless you're a fairly hardcore F1/Endurance fan/history buff, most of the racing-related material is going to fly right past you. Still, Ustinov's extremely sly take on national stereotypes, the Cold War, the BBC vs. American broadcasting and his astounding vocal characterizations and sound effects make "Gibraltar" essential for anyone interested in recorded comedy.
For my fellow "Gibraltar" fans: Almost nobody realizes it anymore, but in many ways Ustinov's recording is a parody of another, even more obscure Riverside LP, "Sounds of Sebring 1959." That disc is almost impossible to find today, but if you can get your hands on a copy you really should hear it.
And ALWAYS remember: No passing on the cliff face!

maurice jarre: the emotion and the strength.......2005-01-29
I am sure that anyone reading this review will agree with me on the fact that m. Jarre's status as a composer is beyond legend. What a pure genius. HOWEVER, I simply have to write this review to warn his fans what a huge disappointment this album is. Frist, the quality of the recording is tinny and insipid [I am not some picky audiophile, but live albums usually leave a lot to be desired]. Most important is that the arrangements and their performance by this orchestra is just totally unsatisfying. Lets face it, what we all love about Jarre is the power of his music in relationship to the films for which it was done. We want the evocative quality of the real scores, pretty much as they were for the films. You wont find it in this album[close your eyes and think of your favorite film score. You can hear it in your mind easily. now imagine hearing an album where the arrangement of it that you hear bears little relationship to what you lovingly remember. Thats the reason for my profound dissatisfaction]... So just buy the 'real' soundtracks and enjoy!
"Ageless Composer..Legendary Icon Extraordinaire..Jarre".......2002-01-21
Highly skilled composer one of the "Old Guard" film scoring Giants...belongs to a very exclusive club of longivity...creating some of the most brilliant scores ever to grace filmland...Mauice Jarre can write music for any story-line...from any country in the world...one who fits the bill of legendary icon in his most worthy profession...FILM COMPOSER EXTRAORDINAIRE!
Not being one so taken with LIVE RECORDINGS, but this 2-CD-Set has much merit, quality and enjoyment, all music composed and yes, conducted by MAURICE JARRE, with very capable musical organizations~ BBC Concert Orchestra,Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, how's that for a Grand Slam line up...but let's see what musical scores make the grade of "stand outs" and the ever popular "highlights".
Starting with the stand outs ~ "A PASSAGE TO INDIA"(1984), string section opens with counterpoints from percussion, giving you a sense of traveling through India, brass takes over with a main theme, gives the ten minute Suite body---"FATAL ATTRACTION" (1987), solo piano sends chills through your memories of the story line, almost textures of "Classical Jazz", blending eerie strings with muted brass joining in for substance, reminds me of some of 1940's murder mysteries with Bogart or Mitchum---"RYAN'S DAUGHTER"(1970), haunting theme with melodic overtones, give way to the percussion section, moving within the unforgettable melody always stumping the music fans, where have I heard this before?
What you've all been waiting for...the HIGHLIGHTS ~ "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"(1962), exceptional score for this stunning film, won an Oscar for "Best Original Score 1962", percussion and brass draws you into the desert, living each passage from an unforgettable arrangement that sits high on the composers list on his achievements---but the one everyone remembers for orchestration, originality and lasting impression of "Classic Soundtracks" is "DR, ZHIVAGO"(1965), sweeping Russian melodies with poignant blends of the windwood sections, listen as the counterpoints abound reeking with passion as the love of two women for one man, the Main Theme is probably one of the most recognizable in the world.
Milan Records has given us an additonal score "SUNSHINE"(1999), a beautiful haunting score that has Jarre's signature in place, the chorus gives off a heavenly sound of "Pure Harmony", counter balanced by the orchestration, gotta love it!
Total Compilation: 2-CD-Set(LIVE) ~ Milan Records 73138-35980-2 ~ (2002)

Pure Pleasure!!!! Give me more!!!.......2006-01-11
Just came back from Europe. This was quite popular in Amsterdam. It's a Belgium band who consist of a former DEUS member and his girlfriend. All words are in French. They sound a bit like Joy Division/New Order but then a bit more electro and with a woman's voice. Definitely influenced by the 80's. Excellent melodies, a crisp sound, nice voice. It's quite unusual but litterally every single song is good. I strongly recommend this cd. It will blow you away.

Customer Reviews:
I felt two stars was a bit unfair, so I chose three..........2007-01-26
Grand Prix is not a great album, let's face it. It is definitely the worst Tokyo Ska record to date, and I'm sure the only pothole in their road so far. The problem here isn't the music, but what the band is lacking: Cleanhead Gimura. He passed away in April of 1995, most believe from HIV. It comes as no surprise then that this record feels completely uninspired. Even the solos seem to feel kinda meh, which is not their style at all. I think this was a record produced by a band who had lost themselves with the death of their longtime friend and frontman, and really, who can blame them?
The crazy thing is that Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is such an amazing band that this record is STILL better than 90% of the other ska band records I've got.
The Best and Worst.......2003-06-30
The absolute best track in this album is track 14:
"Just a little bit of your soul" which they had recorded in their first self-titled maxi single "Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra" with only 6 tracks, all of them flawless.
Track 14 gets the treatment from the most recorded drummer of all time MR. Bernard Purdie in this album.
The worst track of Japanese Pop I ever heard is track 5 "Pit #1", which tries to be funny but in the end is just phony, track 7 is also not worth mentioning, ditto for tracks 11 and 12.
What a wonderful world is quite nice to listen to as well as Let's stay together, which are covers but so skillfully arranged that they get their own merit.
If you are a die-hard fan of the Tokyo Skaparas like me or a fan of Bernard Purdie a.k.a. Mr. Groove you won't mind adding this to your collection, otherwise you'll be happier with Tokyo Ska Paradise "TOJO" their first full lenght album, which has all tracks skillfully groovily played.
The SkaParas prove once more that the less they sing and the more they play, the better the album.

8Ball-Sound of Drift--D1 Grand Prix Official Sound Collection 2.......2005-10-28
I have heard this band in person and they are fantastic! The heavy rock on some cuts and the haunting lyrics on others, are something to hear!! "Masquerade", especially, has a melody that's hard to get out of your head..Great buy! You should see them in concert..WOW!
