5 out of 5 stars It's a Good, Good Day Today .......2006-01-09

I'm no Nick Cave expert, but I picked up this single on vinyl when it came out and, lord almighty, the B-side second song "Good good day" is absolutely stirring, roiling stuff. It is rock n' roll with a religious fervor and passion; it rings out with a conviction that crosses the border to ecstacy and euphoria. It is one of the great lost classics and before it ups and gets gone for good, the fans better get hip to it.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2001-08-04

As I Sat Sadly By Her Side is an excellent song and one of Nick Cave's best singles in years. A good melody, competent Bad Seeds backing, some truly stellar lyrics (even for Nick), and unexpectantly wonderful vocals make this a very good song indeed. The album that it kicks off, No More Shall We Part, is excellent as well, and if you like this song, I reccommend getting it. The two B-sides to this song, Little Janey's Gone and Good Good Day, are both competent, but nothing special. You can see why they didn't make the album. Nothing great, nothing horrible; still, not bad. Get this if you are a Cave fan.

4 out of 5 stars A good single from a truly excellent album.......2001-06-21

You've probably heard the title song by now, if you have been listening to the radio at all this spring. "As I Sat Sadly By Her Side" is a stunningly beautiful song, and Cave's voice really shines on this one. Even with a running time of more than 6 minutes the song is not a second too long. A masterpiece. "Little Janey's Gone" is a mellow song, and wouldn't be out of tune on the album. "Good Good Day" is a more up-tempo song, and is (IMHO) more of a throwaway to be honest. Fair enough, but one can understand why it didn't make it on the album. As this is an import for you US people, the price may be a bit steep if you're not a die-hard fan, but if you can pick this up at a reasonable price you should give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent new songs!.......2001-04-09

Nick Cave's new single is great. I like "Little Janey's Gone" quite a bit. Nick Cave remains one of the greatest contemporary artists.

5 out of 5 stars Good to have him back.......2001-04-02

As I Sat Sadly By Her Side is one of Nick Cave's finest moments. A wonderful lyric, great melody & the Bad Seeds accompanyment make this 6 minute epic a real gem.

The B-sides aren't bad either. Good Good Day is of high enough quality to appear on an album, maybe it's too happy!!! Little Janey's Gone is a harmless little number, pleasant enough but certainly not one of Nick's masterpieces.

All in all this is a great return to the fray & a good taster for the album.
