Six Songs
Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
This cd combines two seperate live sessions we did under drastically different conditions. We always wanted to combine our group improvisation with a dj or sampler and here we got our chance. The first was done after a hazy night of gigging and partying in a dilapidated house on the west side of Chicago, on a cold gray morning in March. We didn't know what was going to come out of Steve G's various percussive and electronic toys, and I'm sure nobody knew where the session was going to go. We had a long-running in-joke about never being able to record a particularly inspired performace or rehearsal because none of us had any recording equipment (we could barely afford the stuff we had). But in the end, this was one of those sessions we were lucky to get down on tape, one of our tightest performances.
The second was recorded 3 years later in Brandis, the Czech Republic. Tony booked a week's work of sessions for his solo album and this live improvisation date in an old castle, part of which was renovated to house a recording studio. The beautiful town, lush greenery and ancient walls around us, along with Steven D's bag of tricks, brought forth a relaxed and free-spirited blowing session, with strong performaces by all.
And there you have it. Two different environments led to inspired moments for all involved. Put in on and bug out.

Powerful Live Worship.......2007-06-28
The very power of this album lies in its being recorded while brother Matt was worshiping his heart out . . . LIVE. He is very passionate and in the moment, and from the background response of the audience, it's evident that they were on board with him. Favorite songs are Blessed Be Your Name, The Heart Of Worship, Holy Moment, Let My Words Be Few, and I Will Offer Up My Life. My sister played this many, many times, and for months it seemed like I got something new to encourage me every time. If you buy one new Christian CD this year, let it be this one!
GREAT CD!!.......2007-06-08
I love this CD. It arrived quickly, and was in good condition. I would definitely buy from this vendor again.
A Great Live Worship Album.......2007-05-04
I like a lot of worship leaders out there, Chris Tomlin, Charlie Hall, David Crowder to name a few. However, I have come to love Matt Redman, and he is by far my favorite worship leader out there. Every album that he has put out is stellar, and Blessed Be Your Name is spectacular for a live event. The vocals are easy to hear and understand, while on other live albums they sometimes seem outdone by the crowd noise or too much bass. In some cases where the vocals are outstanding, the music is subdued. Not here. Each instrument is elegantly showcased. Standout tracks on this disk would have to be the title track, "Holy Moment", "Undignified", "Facedown", and my favorite Redman track of all time, "Better is One Day". If you like live music and worship music, this album is for you.
Great..........2007-05-01
You can't go wrong with a Matt Redman cd. It is filled with powerful worship songs that keep you praising God all day!
Great CD.......2006-11-12
Matt does such a great job of worship on this cd. It is a live album but recorded in high fidelity and sounds great. He plays all the best songs and in such a fantastic way.

Philosopher, seeker after the truth, reconciler of science and religion, teacher, guru to artists, writers and musicians, Gurdjieff was an enigmatic figure; even his birthdate is uncertain: 1866 or 1877. He taught movements "to alter or heighten consciousness" at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, located outside Paris---a highly improvisatory process for which he composed equally improvisatory music. Technically untrained, he depended on skilled assistants to realize and write down his ideas, and found one in a devoted disciple: Ukranian pianist/composer Thomas de Hartmann, who selflessly suspended his own career and, after Gurdjieff's death in 1948, privately published and recorded some of their collaborations. As a composer, Gurdjieff, born at the border of Armenia and Turkey, was influenced by the region's ethnic and cultural diversity, by his childhood memories of the religious and philosophical songs improvised by his father, a Greek troubadour, by the hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church, and by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia. For this recording, the performers themselves arranged his compositions for cello and piano, adding five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos, including three based on Byzantine hymns. Both players have been involved with Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox music; both are expert improvisers. Their strong feeling and affinity for the material allows them to approach it with both reverence and freedom; the playing is primarily subdued and inward. The piano texture ranges from delicate tinkling to full-blooded chords and arpeggios; the cello, playing mostly in the low and middle register, often in unison with the piano, sounds dark, warm and beautiful. The music, except for one lively dance, is slow, solemn, and mournful, in the minor mode. Melodies featuring oriental intervals are elaborated but not developed; based on single-note drones, harmonies are static or move in stepwise progressions but do not modulate. This lack of contrast and variety creates an otherworldly, disembodied atmosphere, despite several buildups of motion, dynamics, and intensity. --Edith Eisler

Must have!.......2006-01-12
This amazingly beautiful album to me is the soundtrack of Anatolia, of an era gone by when Turks, Greeks, Armenians and other ethnic groups shared their lives peacefully and harmoniously. Its sadness inevitably reminds me of millions who unnecessarily died on this soil in many wars fought in early twentieth century, of people forced to leave the only land the knew for unknown destinations and destinies, of the unimaginable hardships endured by its people. And more personally it takes me fom New York and puts me right next to my father's grave in a forgotten Anatolian village, 6000 miles away.
an artistic triumph.......2005-12-28
Peaceful, meditative, sad, introspective, deceptively simple. Classical. Coming from a deep sense of inner peace, like all things from the Work, but NOT New Agey.
Mystical.
Mr Gurdjieff sang or hummed his songs and Thomas deHartmann "wrote them down and added harmony". Hard to tell where Mr. G stops and deHartmann starts, but we will never know. Mr G speaks of Objective Music and the vast majority pieces of subjective music. This is the former.
I must confess that many other peformances and arrangements of the music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann, the way it was "supposed to be played", left me cold. Most of the other renditions I heard were played by those Drunk with Orthodoxy, amaturish or just plain lacking in musical ability.
This version is a revelation!
I think G would approve of this.
I like this, I think that the arrangements for cello and piano instead of just piano, as written, is an artistic triumph. The cello played by Anja Lechner expresses the peace and meditative sadness inherent in the music, even if that wasn't the way it's usually played. Composers are often not the best intepreters of their music.
That having been said there are three part to this music, pieces by G/deH, Tsabropoulos and then more G/deH and when the pianist sticks his own works in the middle of Mr G's the quality of composition falls somewhat. His compositions are or similar mood and type to G/deH, but really don't have the same achieve the same heights of depth and soul. (Mr G would say they are not Objective Music, I guess.) Perfomances of all pieces are uniformly good.
I would hope this group will arrange more of Mr G's music in this format in the future.
Recommended.
Interpretations of Gurdjieff's Music.......2005-12-14
You may want to pass this one up if you enjoy Gurdjieff's music as he intended it to be. To me these seem like rambling, flimsy interpretations of strong, articulate works (if you have heard any of the Kremski recordings, you know).
The arrangements do not seem to have captured the spirit of Gurdjieff's music very well. If someone did with Beethoven what has been done with Gurdjieff's music here, I don't think it would be taken seriously.
If you are interested in a new "twist" on Gurdjieff's music, then you may enjoy this. If you enjoy Gurdjieff's music closer to the way which he composed it, then you will want to look for a different recording.
Inspired Subjectivity Encounters An Objective Music.......2005-03-19
Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff's music was first given a broad public exposure with Keith Jarrett's recording "Sacred Hymns" in 1980. The public was perhaps already partly prepared for this music in 1979, due to the release of director Peter Brook's beautiful film on the life of G.I. Gurdjieff, "Meetings with Remarkable Men". The closing sequences of "Meetings with Remarkable Men" show the middle-aged Gurdjieff being taught about deep ontological truths through live performances of both music and dance.
In the 1920's, at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, Gurdjieff continued this work by collaborating with Thomas de Hartmann on creating an "objective music". A music that "would work upon all listeners equally, focusing their mental life and bringing them to a new relationship with the living universe". It is probably Keith Jarrett, who has worked closely with the Gurdjieff Societies of both London and New York, that has produced the most "authentic" or "objective" reading of Gurdjieff's music in recent years.
On this ECM New Series disc of 2004, "Chants, Hymns and Dances", Anja Lechner and Vassilis Tsabropoulos decided to take a more liberal, "subjective", approach. Their interest in these compositions is perhaps more "musical than philosophical". Their suitability for this task should be apparent. Lechner's most recent work has involved interpreting the music of both Armenian Composer Tigran Mansurian and the Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov. While Tsabropoulos, for his part, has worked with ancient Byzantine music and the music of the Greek Orthodox Church.
According to the informative liner notes by Steve Lake, "This music exists for the individual to make of it what he or she will, according to capacity". Lechner and Tsabropoulos both have deep experience with composed music and also with the process of free improvisation. Indeed, these two performers brilliantly interpret Gurdjieff's music with gentle assurance and a bright spontaneity. The five original compositions on this disc by Tsabropoulos even suggest an affinity with the Gurdjieff sensibility that borders on predestination.
"Chants, Hymns and Dances" is worthy of repeated encounter and remains serenely vital with each new audition. This is an ambiguous music that defies easy spiritual classification.

This is one of the most moving records I have ever heard. It is a must have for any classical music lover or anyone who appreciates deeply emotional music. So simple, so powerful. Wow.

Deeply moved........2007-03-02
Received this as a gift over the holidays, and wow.... just, wow. Allison's singing is remarkable in a way that is difficult to put to words. There's an essence to her singing, a vitality that you can appreciate only in the experience. It hit me while sitting in a candle-lit living room on a cold night sipping tea with my lover, and finding that we both were suddenly moved nearly to tears by this great CD. (Yes, I'm referring here to the hauntingly good rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah").
The song selection is great (doesn't hurt that Allison's included "In My Life" -- one of my favorite Beatles songs), and this has certainly made it into my stack of favorites. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
So beautiful..........2006-12-16
One of the most beautiful Christmas albums I have ever heard. You have to hear her sing Angel. Her music will take your breath away. If you like Sarah McLachlan, you'll like this.
Hidden little masterpiece.......2006-05-12
The versions of traditional songs are very good. I think she has a very good voice. This is a nice simple clean album. It is built on talent and passion. Sometimes it reminds me a little of Cher on the more upbeat songs and a bit like Norah Jones on the softer pieces. This is a hidden little masterpiece.
Allison Crowe - Watch Her Rise To The Top.......2006-02-21
Allison Crowe is on her way. I downloaded some of her music here on Amazon, visited her website and wondered where she had been hiding. Allison's music is soulful and full of passion. If you like Norah Jones, you will love Allison. I hear Allison is working on a new CD. I am betting it will be dynamite! WATCH FOR IT!
stunningly beautiful.......2005-11-16
Allison Crowe succeeds in spectacular, inspired, fashion with this highly original approach.
She's gathered together songs of the season that reflect thoughtfulness and spirituality well outside the standard.
Without the sort of polish normally heard on holiday records, Crowe's natural vocals and piano accompaniment are truly stunning.

Product Description
Peter Lieberson's is certainly one of the most refreshing compositional voices to have entered the repertoire of the world s leading orchestras during the past several decades. Lieberson's music ranges broadly: his compositions address the listener with a generous variety of character, while his harmonic palette expresses richly developed hues of both tonality and atonality. This CD features premiere recordings of three major works, opening with a setting of five Rilke poems written for the composer's wife, the much admired mezzo-soprano, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. Ms. Hunt Lieberson performs alongside one of Peter Lieberson's most devoted champions, the estimable pianist, Peter Serkin. Their impassioned account of Lieberson's Rilke Songs was recorded in concert at the Ravinia Festival. The Horn Concerto was composed for horn and a chamber orchestra, and is played by its dedicatee, the horn virtuoso William Purvis. The eighteen minute composition is in two movements that emphasize the lyrical nature of the horn, but also in the composer s words, its feisty, dance-like and humorous side. The largest work on this disc is The Six Realms, a twenty-seven minute cello concerto in six movements, originally composed for Yo Yo Ma. Based on the composer s long standing practice of Tibetan Buddhism, The Six Realms reflect the Buddhist realms, which offer a detailed portrait of human consciousness. The music of this utterly original concerto ranges from sensuously lyrical to humorous, and gives full voice to the cello's ability to sing long lyric lines throughout its range. The cello soloist is Tchaikovsky Competition prize-winner Michaela Fukacova. Michaela Fukacova plays Poul Ruders: Anima (Cello Cto. No. 2) BRIDGE 9122 William Purvis plays Robert and Clara Schumann: Horn Music BRIDGE 9164 Peter Serkin plays Stefan Wolpe: Piece in 2 Parts, BRIDGE 9043
Customer Reviews:
The minority view.......2007-06-03
I really, really wanted to like this music. But after many attempts I found myself unsatisfied. One cannot quarrel with any of the performances. The loss of Lorrain Hunt Lieberson is a blow to music. The performance given by her and her accompanist, Peter Serkin, is as exemplary a reading as one could get. Her fine low register is especially appealing here. But in the end, we've heard this music before. Rhythmically and gesturally it could be late Romantic German. Harmonically, there are a few twists, but nothing that hadn't been done by 1940. Tempi all lean toward moderato, so the overall effect becomes monochromatic. Lieberson remarks how much he learned from his wife; it's hard to quarrel except that he may have forgotten his own responsibility as a teacher.
The Six Realms for amplified cello and orchestra has a slightly scary title. Why is the cello amplified? Are we going to hear scratches, special effects and so on? Thankfully the answer is NO. It appears that the cello is amplified simply to balance it against the orchestra. The piece itself is generally slow and lyrical, with fine playing by Michaela Fukacova. Nice enough, but nowhere we haven't been.
The Horn Concerto is a fine middle Stravinsky piece. There doesn't seem to be much in there that couldn't have been written 60 years before. Instrumentation, harmony, voicings all seem to come from pieces like Dumbarton Oaks, or the Violin Concerto, or perhaps the Piano Cappricio. I was waiting for a punch line, but it never came. The concerto is a first-rate student piece in the style of Stravinsky.
So where would I place Peter Lieberson? I've heard some of his music, particularly for piano, that is much more challenging and engaging. But this music lies alongside music of Harbison, Zwilich, Tower, and many others. There's no denying the craft and lyricism. It's safe. But I hear no individual voice--no imperative.
The more I hear it the more I like it.......2007-03-22
Lieberson's music (so far I only know this CD and the one with his Neruda Songs) is not "difficult". Lieberson has a lyric quality, but in the style of the times.
Of course, Lorraine Hunt is superb (in both CD's, though I must say I found the Neruda Songs the more compelling, even heart wrenching, sometimes bringing me to near tears.
I find the Horn Concerto a delight. And like it, The Six Realms is inventive, nicely orchestrated and at times a bit eerie. There is a ruminative or perhaps sad tone in much of this work. At times it is intensely dramatic and the cello with its deep sensuous sound then provides a provocative contrast.
I think this CD is worth having as much as any of the past 75 years.
Powerful Testament to Lieberson's Musical Talent with Wife Lorraine the Ideal Muse.......2007-03-21
The roaring beauty and emotional torrents in the late mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's unparalleled voice are put on fine display in a live performance of her husband Peter's musical interpretation of German poet Rainer Maria Rilke's "Sonnets to Orpheus". Recorded at the 2004 Ravinia Festival, this eighteen-minute piece in five movements is a passionate combination of voice and piano by Peter Serkin, often at melodic odds with one another yet melding powerfully in a most fluid manner. Rilke's lyrical prose juxtaposes easily with the haunting imagery evoked by Lieberson's music and infused by his innate understanding of the text. Moreover, having his wife play muse elevates the entire performance to sheer transcendence.
The centerpiece of this 2006 disc, "The Six Realms", is almost as compelling as it represents an ambitious canvas of human consciousness as interpreted by Tibetan Buddhism philosophy of which Lieberson has been a devout follower. A concerto in six movements, the piece begins ominously with "The Sorrow of the World", which climbs to a dramatic crescendo that segues into the distinct contours of the realms - anger with Hell, neediness with the Hungry Ghost, willful ignorance with the Animal, passion with the Human, jealousy with the Jealous God, and a level of bliss and self-satisfaction with the God realm. The last two realms are intriguingly combined in the climactic movement. Masterful playing by Michaela Fukacova on violoncello is heard throughout, most prominently in the Hell and Human Realm movements.
The concluding Horn Concerto consists of two longer movements and carries a greater variety of musical textures than the first two, almost cinematic in approach with touches of Gershwin-style jazz and mid-century swing. Spotlighted most lustrously in this piece is the dexterous playing of William Purvis on French horn. Denmark's Odense Symphony Orchestra plays expertly on the last two concertos with Justin Brown conducting on "The Six Realms" and Donald Palma on the "Horn Concerto". Overall, this impressive recording confirms Peter Lieberson as a truly accomplished modern composer who obviously received a great deal of inspiration from his mother, ballerina Vera Zorina (to whom this recording is dedicated), and his wondrously talented wife, who sadly passed away two months after this disc's release.
Rilke Songs, et al........2007-02-17
A very pleasant album, well performed. We especially enjoyed the songs, and the outstanding voice of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, tragically, taken from us far too soon.
Haunting Vocals Amid a Postmodern Score.......2007-01-08
The late mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's full-throated singing once again astounds the astute listener. Rilke's complex poetry, set to music by the late singer's husband, Peter Lieberson, is a haunting combination of music, text, and near perfect vocal interpretation. Hunt Lieberson's incarnation of Rilke's evocations of loss and transformation is nothing less than a supremely intelligent and passionate performance. An orchestral piece and a horn concerto comprise most of the CD and Peter Lieberson's late-20th century musical sensibility is at once lyrical and dark and intent on exploring moods particularly resonant with postmodern life: ambiguity, dissonance, estrangement, lamentation, and the inexorable pull of fate toward the elliptical.

While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
The Very Best of Janet Baker is simply the very best!.......2005-02-09
This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!
Grace Incarnate.......2002-09-02
If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.
A Rare & Glorious Singer.......2002-06-10
This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

Customer Reviews:
Turn off the lights........2004-08-28
This cd should be listened to in the dark with or without the one you love (or love right now), sipping something cold and smooth with a bite.
You are alone and lost at night in a foreign city, and you just want somewhere to sit down and have a drink. You stumble down a dark lane looking for someone, somewhere, and you spot light coming from a doorway. You walk in. You think it's just a bar, and you take the nearest table and order a drink and look around while you sip.
Then the sound. Oh, the sound. It's pure, slow, hot love. You look at the people around you and see so many possibilities. You melt back into your seat, and make eye contact with the stranger at the next table. You realize you aren't lost; you're right where you want to be.
Sultry jazz to the max..........2003-11-09
This cd is sultry jazz to the max from begin to end...
"You Might Say - Bugge Wesseltoft" is my fave cut, though I really like them all... If you're a downtempo/jazz/lounge DJ, then you absolutely need this... Either way, a jazz music fan or DJ - you need this cd in your collection... Peace at ya - DJ Dakini-NYC...
Buy This Now.......2003-06-15
This CD has been in my player the last three days. Sultry songs, great female vocals, it's Jazz with very contemporary, slightly alternative, arrangements. The cuts with SYLK 130 and Elvis Costello are superb.

Customer Reviews:
Shiveringly beautiful..........2006-10-23
Having sung most of the works on this album, I already knew they were moving and beautiful, but the crystalline voices of this ensemble, their blend and precision makes this a must-have for an lover of the genre.
outstanding!.......2002-12-27
This CD contains some of the most beautiful sacred christmas music ever written. The performances are exellent, and each piece follows the next in a perfectly balanced flow. One thing worth noticing is that in addition to the the most commonly heard version of In Dulci Jubilo by Scheidt it also includes the rarer and even more beautiful version by Buxtehude. That version is followed by the last cut, my own favorite Bach choral Ach mein herzliebes Jesulein. If you can't make it to church this christmas, listening to this record might be the next best thing.
Magnificat!.......2000-10-28
This is the most beautiful CD that I have ever heard. It has very religious overtones -- after all, it is "Music of the Nativity". Thus, it makes a delicious Christmas CD. The songs stir the deepest parts of my soul. The sound mix is prime and the performances, especailly the vocal and string renditions, are exceptional. The stand out songs are "Magnificat" and the two songs that follow it. This is like on a moonset/sunrise run on a big empty beach with the bright stars slowly fading in the violet hues of the gaining light. That is what this CD means to me. Check it!

Customer Reviews:
A MUST BUY!!!.......2001-03-03
If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!
Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26
Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.
This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23
What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19
This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.
