About the Artist
Simeon Hein has been playing guitar for over 20 years. He has been writing original songs for the last 10 years and this is his 4th release. His playing technique comes from the likes of Leo Kottke, John Fahey, John Renbourn, Pierre Bensusan, and Jimmy Page.

An Insightful Journey in Listening.......2002-07-24

Simeon Hein's "Opening Skies" will open your mind with its infinite clarity.
Not merely as a sound recording, where your ears reach out to the ends of the universe in the stereo field finding glorious planets, galaxies, and bright stars...all brilliantly defined by Simeon's finess, grace, and sensitivity... jewels suspended in space - but "Opening Skies" feels like an insight. To what? Something like..."Oh yeah...I'm not just a self contained, drifting island mesmerized and tortured by every subtle change of temperature that strikes my earth body. There is so much more...so much more...and the possibilities are huge!"

The original quality of these pieces sets in adrift on voyage from the complacent slavery of so much modern music. Guitar notes suspend in space like the Milky Way ( not the candy bar, although, it is that creamy )with planets streaming across the infinite expanse within your head. His guitar says...I don't care where you are...I'm going to take you there! "Opening Skies", "Milk Hill", and "Going in Circles" do this very well.

His original music is refreshingly unique and his cover of the traditional "Lord Franklin" is adorned with his spacious originality...almost suggesting intergalactic voyages between the folk lines of the traditional lyric. Wonderful!

Simeon Hein's CD 'Opening Skies' is a rare collection of
songs no two alike, yet together weaving musical threads into
a single journey.

At the root of it is Simeon's fingerstyle guitar playing,
taking alternating bass picking, Celtic and ambient voicings
into uncharted waters. Other-worldly sounds including
delay-tapped guitar adventures and synth pads take the
recording well and truly off the ground and into a world of
Simeon's design.

Highlights for me are the very human tunes 'Teri's Song' and
"February Ice'. Also a new slant on the traditional
'Lord Franklin' is typical of Simeon's ability to re-cycle
elements into something completely new.

I'm a fairly new (about a year) Jen Cass fan. Both of her albums are terrific. Jen has the ability to make you laugh or make you cry. Her lyrics are powerful and have the ability to melt your heart. On top of that, she's an amazing person who seems to connect with each and every fan.

In "Skies Burning Red" Jen Cass has delivered a beautiful CD and a tremendous follow-up to her '96 debut. Jen is the superlative storyteller of our time. She has written some very bold melodies (see "Trouble") and the instrumentation is tasty, from a vocal/piano duet to well-balanced ensemble work. Each song has its own enticing personality so the CD stays fresh throughout. I am really excited about this album! Get it, enjoy it, and spread the word - Jen Cass is a fantastic artist.

start listening before everyone else finds out..........2003-04-14

I have been listening to Jen Cass for years, ever since a friend who went to law school with her at Michigan lent me a copy of her first CD.

When I describer her, I call her a feminist folk-rock singer songwriter with a wonderful country twang. I don't know if it really captures her... but she has a great voice, writes excellent music and some of the best lyrics out there. Highly recommend you give her a listen.

Let's all buy enough of her CDs so that she can get out of the lawyer business for good!
