Disappointing.........2006-06-29
Not worth the money or time and trouble ordering this product. I just did not like it!!!!
Yes, Jazz but no much.......2006-02-24
This CD is very smooth to ear. The player trio is fine. The flute (Elena Duran) is more present on Beatles music, Grapelli (violin) presents a splendid violin solo on Bach music (his Air On A G String violin solo is unforgettable). The jazzistic components are presented by bass, drums and piano, but they're not enough to give a genuine jazz touch to this disc, I think so. If you want mor jazzistic features for Bach and Beatles music, you must ear Swingle Singers and Jacques Loussier.
More jazz than Bach.......2004-05-20
Given the title of this album, I was expecting arrangements of a baroque nature; that's not what they've done, however. There are renditions of 19 Beatles tunes done in a style that is largely of the light, sprightly jazz variety, and a similar treatment of a theme from Bach's Brandenburg No. 2. If you like this kind of thing, the recording quality is excellent and the players are good at what they do; the performance is very fluid (to my ear) and the sound is crisp. It is not, however, a baroque adaptation of modern material; the style of performance is merely shifted from rock to acoustical jazz ensemble with embellishments to match. Unfortunately, the moods of the original pieces do not always match the moods of the versions here, and some of the arrangements venture off into other styles in places as well. If I hadn't been expecting something else, I'd probably have liked this CD more.
Papa Bach boogies! Oh, yeah!.......2004-04-06
You are welcome to the Beatles cuts on this CD. The Bach tracks are what make it worth the price.
Don't get me wrong. I love the Beatles, but honestly, the works of Lennon and McCartney do not easily adapt to the jazz trio style. It's more like being pummeled into submission. What's left is better heard in a vertically moving metal booth with a panel of numbered buttons next to its automatic sliding doors (OK, OK, I'll say it! It's ELEVATOR MUSIC!). ::whew::
The Bach selections, quite the opposite, are as at home with a cup of strong black coffee at a bistro table for two as they are on a picnic with an 8-piece spicy chicken dinner from Popeye's (red beans and rice, please). It's only right. Bach was, after all, such an improviser that some of his compositions consist of 2 or 3 chords. It was up to the performer to put SOMETHING between those chords.
When these recordings were originally released on the Angel Records digital LP "Brandenburg Boogie," the titular track was the opening salvo. Here, it's saved for last and very well indeed it serves as a finale to the works that precede it.
"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" sways in a hammock nudged by the breezes of Stephane Grappelli's violin and Elena Duran's flute while Laurie Holloway's piano work sparkles like sunlight filtering through the leaves.
"Groovy Gavotte," based on the Gavotte from French Suite for keyboard No. 5 in G major struts along like an iron-pumping peacock with attitude. Grappelli sits this one out while Duran plays straight lady to Holloway's key-pounding improvisation evocative of that peacock whomping the snot out of a hawk that tried to have him for lunch.
Everyone who records Bach records "Air on the G String." Maybe it's some kind of RIAA reguirement but here, the most mellow cut on the whole disc, is where the whole trio seems to be at their most adventurous. Even Duran nudges her flute outside the dots and lines more than on any other cut.
The Minuet from the Little Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach returns to the norm with Duran once again playing the melody as straight as an arrow while Holloway comes back with the kinds of electric piano riffs you only hear in those previously smoke-filled jazz clubs.
The aria from Cantata No. 30 starts off like a ride in a swing at the park but soon soars over town like a hot-air balloon. Duran's octave leap on the closing bars is a true high point of the disc.
What do you do when you have only one violin but you're playing a movement from the "Double" Violin Concerto? You have Elena play one violin part on her flute while Stephane rocks on his violin and Laurie rolls on his keyboards. Yes, it's been done on classical recordings before but never like this.
The Gigue in B flat major gives the listener and the performers a chance to cool down with a stretch. Once more, one notes Duran's careful note-for-note playing contrasted by Grappelli's sonic leaps and bounds.
The other must-record piece is "Wauchet Auf". Grappelli's improvisation dances around Duran's presentation of the melody. Then, Stephane takes center stage and challenges Laurie to a violin versus electric piano showdown at twenty paces. Who wins? Does it matter?
The Sicilienne from the Sonata for harpsichord and flute exudes an air of mystery and lulls the listener into a sort of calm before a musical storm of Bayou hurricane proportions.
That storm arrives when the trio gets down on "Brandenburg Boogie", modeled after the first movement of the second Brandenburg Concerto. In its original form, the piece was once described as "Dixieland Baroque," all the more fitting for this performance. Grappelli and Holloway provide the most raucous moments while Duran's flute keeps order. Everything culminates in a sort of musical "Oh, yeah!" that leaves the listener both invigorated and out of breath.
interesting.......2002-06-20
This mix of baroque touch and beatle melody results in true pleasure for the ear.

Customer Reviews:
A Real Find!.......2003-08-20
This CD was released in about 1992 but somehow I'd never run across it. I was interested because Jack Gibbons is a pianist I very much admire, primarily for his superb 2CD recording of the minor key études of Alkan, the kind of music that makes even piano virtuosos have nightmares because of their difficulty. One thing I noted in Gibbons's Alkan release was his loose and easy sense of rhythm. So, thought I, maybe he can do Gershwin the way he was meant to be played. And sure enough, he can and does.
These are mostly recreations from the piano roll elaborations that Gershwin recorded himself. Unfortunately the technology at the time Gershwin made them was fairly primitive and it created a kind of rhythmic strait-jacket for his playing. So what Gibbons has done is play the same notes Gershwin played, but subtly free the rhythms so that they sound spontaneous. And do they!
The CD includes a solo piano version of 'Rhapsody in Blue' based on Gershwin's own two-piano arrangement. Also recorded is the slow movement from the 'Concerto in F.' Both are done beautifully.
There is a dynamite performance of 'I'd Rather Charleston,' a tune hardly remembered today. And then there's Gershwin's own patented version (here perfectly mimicked) of 'Fascinating Rhythm.' And on and on.
This is 67 minutes of sheer joy!
Scott Morrison
An Ambitious Interpretation of Gershwin's Pianism.......2002-02-25
Jack Gibbons does a remarkable job in performing his transcriptions of Gershwin's works -- TOO remarkable that is. Each track easily displays Gibbons' technical gifts as a pianist but this is the rare case where it actually works against him. Listen to the original recordings of Gershwin himself playing these works of his and you'll see how EASILY the music flows whereas Gibbons' performance projects that "hard-work" atmosphere; you can hear Gibbons concentrating more on playing everything exactly "right" instead of having plain, flat-out fun. This is not surprising considering Gershwin's pianistic style was shaped by the free-wheeling, Harlem stride-piano masters whereas Gibbons was no doubt a classically-trained pianist where typically each and every single note must be played with proper dynamics and tempo (Gershwin didn't vary his dynamics nor tempo as often as many believe). Still, Jack Gibbons' "The Authentic George Gershwin" series is hands-down the best window into the artistry of George Gershwin's piano playing style. High praise should be given to Gibbons for not "watering-down" Gershwin's piano pieces (like so many have before) and making a recording for anyone who admires Gershwin as a composer as well as a magnificent pianist.
Authentic is a misused word, but this time it really applies.......1999-02-11
I have a huge Gershwin collection accumulated over 40 years and know all this music cold. But I've never heard it played better. I think George himself would smile to hear Gibbons. Unlike the perfect--and bloodless--Gershwin renditions of Michael Feinstein, this one truly captures the spirit of the music. It takes the old Gershwin piano roll renditions with their mechanical rhythm and gives them life. Here, you'll hear hundreds of small variations and Gershwinesque riffs you've never heard before, even if you know this music as well as I do.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding and varied period Haydn.......2004-04-24
Here is one of the most unusual and outstanding Haydn disks extant. The Four Nations Ensemble has put together a pair of piano trios -- played on a period piano -- with two Italian duets, the famous Andante with Variation in F Minor for keyboard, "The Spirit's Song" from Haydn's lieder, and an unusual and rarely recorded duet, "The Battle of the Nile", which the Penguin Guide says has been recorded one other time.
Certainly the greatest interest must be in this piece of music, a counterpart to Haydn's famous "Nelson" mass, written to commemorate Admiral Nelson's victory over Napoleon at the Nile. In this concert aria accompanied by fortepiano, soprano Ann Monoyios tells the story again. "The Nile with wrecks o'erspread," she says, "the curling smoke, the captive banners seat the doom of haughty France and break her galling yoke. (A bit of Haydn's irrelverent national humor in that last line, perhaps?) "Eternal praise, great Nelson to they name and these immortal partners of they fame!"
I love Haydn vocal music and must say this CD presents gifts I never knew of before. "The Spirit's Song", performed by Brown, is so lovely it makes me wish he'd record the entire set of Original Canzonettas with fortepianist Andrew Appel as accompanist. The keyboard trios are not my thing, to be honest, although I enjoyed the tinkly performances. The Italian duets are nice but insubstantial. On the other hand, Appel's performance of the Andante with Variations is good enough to compete with Brendel, Peraiha, Richter and the rest of the world's greatest Haydn players.
This is an unusual and unusually exemplary CD that has been around since 2001. Considering the state of the classical CD business, if you like this kind of thing you may want to act soon. This is the kind of CD that, once disappeared, never reappears. And it is too full of beauty and interest to never have been heard.
Haydn Hitting on All Six.......2001-11-21
This wonderful speculative Haydn soiree features vocal, chamber, and solo instrumental works written when the composer was at the very height of his powers. Like Dvorak a century later, Haydn could seem to do no wrong in the '90s, and the music he produced, even those pieces at the edge of or outside the repertoire, are done with the consummate skill of a master entertainer.
The least of the works on this ASV disk is "The Battle of the Nile," an occasional recitative and aria based on a poem written by Lord Nelson's lover to commemorate his triumph over the French fleet on the Nile, which doomed Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. Despite the negligible quality of the verse, the piece shows Haydn's superb skill as a tone painter. And it features Haydn's characteristic dry humor in the somewhat overboard drama the composer imparts and that the performers capture well.
The two trios, which the very good notes to the recording explain are actually augmented keyboard sonatas, are nicely contrasted, one in the minor key and the other in the major. The A minor trio is music in Haydn's Emfindsamkeit style--brooding, yearning, emotionally charged. The A major trio, on the other hand, is all smiles and energy. Both trios have marvelously impetuous finales that make for great listener satisfaction.
Then there are the "Two Italian Duets" and "The Spirit's Song." The former is a lovely pair of love songs that, if they happened to bear the sainted name of Mozart, would be at the center of the duet repertoire. The later shows Haydn in a Gothic mood, capturing the spookiness of England's latest literary crazy, thanks to Horace Walpole et al. Again, this is fun.
Finally, the keyboard "Andante with Variations," an acknowledged masterwork though not heard much today. The mood is that of the A minor trio: very stern and serious stuff for Haydn, very commanding as well.
The performances on period instruments were obviously very carefully considered so that balances would be just right. The result, in the trios at least, is of hearing this music for the first time. Although I love the classic Beaux Arts treatment of the trios on Philips, the ASV recording shows how this music should sound, the fortepiano clearly a much more equal partner as should be the case. The vocal soloists blend very well and deliver their solo numbers with aplumb. And fortepianist Andrew Appel brings great feeling to the serious keyboard music, great dash to the bracing fast music. If you love Haydn, get this disc. If you don't, here's a great way to start.

MARCH FANS HAVE SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT.......2001-06-08
IF YOUR LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT ANY TRAIN FAN, OR MARCH FAN WILL ENJOY, THAN THIS DISC IS FOR YOU. THE PERFORMANCE IS ENERGETIC AND STRONG. THE DISC FEATURES MORE THAN ENOUGH MUSIC TO KEEP YOUR NEIGHBORS BANGING ON YOUR DOOR TO QUIET DOWN. GREAT LINER NOTES FROM A MORE HISTORICAL POINT OF VIEW. A MUST FOR TRAIN LOVERS. TOTALLY ENJOYABLE FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY.
Playing Does Not Meet Concept of Album.......2001-04-25
What could be more fun than a disc of band music about trains? There is the great band standard "Rolling Thunder" (Henry Fillmore) and several marches that promise to be great fun. (The Toledo Blade, The B&O March, Little Red Caboose, Field & Concert Novelty for example).
I was really looking forward to this album when I saw it. The circus band sounds underrehearsed. There's some great music on this disc--little-played, but not worth investing money. Mr. Phillips has another disc with his Circus Band out--I hope it is better prepared than those on this disc.
The notes center around railroad history, and in that regard they are very interesting. I was hoping more for info on the composers of these marches, galops, and screamers. But that's nitpicking. I would just like to know who people like C. Carlton and D. Moffitt are.

Customer Reviews:
'Swonderful and Fascinatin'.......2001-09-24
A slim volume of Gershwin's own arrangements of his popular songs exists, and has been recorded by many pianists. Unfortunately, these arrangements exist for only a scant few of Gershwin's songs, and they are rather abbreviated and dare I say it? Unsatisfying. Enter Jack Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons has meticulously researched George Gershwin's own playing of these pieces, from old radio shows, movie soundtracks, and other archival sources and he plays them exactly the way the composer did. He kids you not about "authentic". This is about as close as you can get to the source, and the recorded sound is spectacular. Bravo!
