If Renegades proves to be the last Rage Against the Machine album to feature singer Zack de la Rocha, who quit the band after nine years, it's a cool way to go out. Produced by Rick Rubin, Renegades is a salute to the artists who made Rage what they are--or were. While it's easy to hear Rage's rap roots in songs from Afrika Bambaataa, EPMD, and Volume 10, it's more interesting to see their take on rock in its classic and punk forms. Rage capture the raw spirit, if not the quite the intensity, inherent in the MC5 classic "Kick Out the Jams." A superior second live take appears at the CD's end, followed by a concert version of Cypress Hill's "How I Could Just Kill a Man," with help from B-Real and Sen Dog. Devo's "Beautiful World" is rendered quietly unrecognizable, while Minor Threat's "In My Eyes" is given a wonderfully melodic, ultra-aggro treatment. The Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" takes on a techno vibe that's unsettling and Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" is also effectively modernized. Ultimately, Renegades is a must-have for its song selection, musical execution, and the unhappy fact that it's likely the ultimate offering from one of rock's most musically and politically relevant lineups. --Katherine Turman

Reun1te / Political Agenda.......2007-02-14
When I heard Zack had left the band due to 'creative differences' I was not happy but continued to live with hope that it was not the end of the Rage. Seven years later, they are doing a 1 off concert & just like many out there lets hope they re-ignite the sparks & reform the magical chemistry that in my opinion has never died!
Does anyone own the live & rare Rage cd, if you listen to it, Zack states lets bombard this Leonard Paltere's (SP) mail box until we win, maybe all us Rage fans need to bombard the record company's or the members of Rage themseleves until they do what they again do what they do best & that is make music as Rage Against The Machine.
Yo Check it, as I listen to their material daily even today I can find more passion in Rage than a run down mill scrap band that is Audioslave (namely due to Chris Cornell's semi attempted alright vocals), most of their mateiral in their first 2 albums could have easily been reworked for Rage as a lot of Rage was coming through & the only difference is Chris Cornell was on lead vocals & I am glad I did not see them live when they started playing Rage material (what kind of hypocracy is that?) - man he would have ruined all meaning & destroyed the funk blast!
So cut the chord & get this musical act of RATM back on track, you guys would with ease be no. 1 (not that you lot would care about the fat checks due to the political nature/agenda of the band).
Tom Morello - you are an outstanding guitarist, I could not believe those sounds could be made by guitar but a lot of what you did in Audioslave was just borrowed from Rage, however the rhythm section of Audio is great (esp. Brad he really takes drumming to new levels).
Hopefully the panther the brother De La Rocha has in his 7 year absence written some stronger much needed material due to the musical junk out there today & if there is any hope & in life if I saw a mission that is accomplished it would be Rage reformed & continuing on til their last breath/s.
Not everyone is gifted as musicains so why throw it away guys for a half rate band Audislave? Give me the mic so I can scream "COME ON...AAARRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"
When I think Rage I can with ease think of their song titles:
Bombtrack, Killing in the Name Of, Take the Power Back, Know Your Enemy, Wake Up, Township Rebellion, Freedom, People of the Sun, Bulls on Parade, Vietnow, Revoler, Snakecharmer, Down Rhode, Without a Face, Year of the Boomerang, Testify, Guerrila Radio, Mic Check, Sleep Now In The Fire, Voice of the Voiceless, Maria, Ashes In The Fall, War Within A Breath, No Shelter, Microphone Fiend, Pistol Grip Pump, Renegades of Funk, How I Could Just Kill A Man, Street Fighting Man, Maggies Farm...Wow!!!
Zack - we need & long for you in the music industry more than ever as there has been no one out there able to spit truth like it needs to be done on a microphone only you as the front man of Rage Against The Machine can pull this off.
Peace out my panthers my brothers!
Rage Keep On Rockin' 'Til The Morning Comes.......2007-01-26
Even though "Renegades," Rage Against The Machine's last album, was merely a cover album, it still solidifies the band's career and legendary status as the most active and unique protest rock band for Generation X and as innovators of the ill-fated rap-rock movement. All 12 covers -- spanning from hip-hop to punk to classic rock -- fit perfectly into Rage Against The Machine's songbook, keeping a clear message and not sacrificing one ounce of intergrity or energy. Although the rumors of frontman Zach De La Rocha's disdain for the release of the album have been blamed for the break-up of the band, "Renegades" still stands as yet another exercise in fist-pumping power and excellent and inventive musicianship. Truly, Rage Against The Machine in top form once again.
Hearing Zach spit out rhymes on hip-hop classics such as "Microphone Friend" and "How I Could Just Kill A Man" sounds only natural, but it's when the band ventures into other, less predictable territories that this album really shines. Perfect example would be their cover of Devo's "Beautiful World," a haunting, moving and surprisingly melodic commentary on the state of the world that still holds up today, just as it did in the 80's, and takes the Rage sound into a new realm. On the flipside, "Kick Out The Jams" (originally by MC5), is a brilliant merger of the signature Rage style with the fury of old-school punk. One of the more energetic tracks, this song is truly the point where the album takes shape. "In My Eyes" (originally by Minor Threat) takes on the same tone as "Kick Out The Jams," and remains another highlight, but elsewhere, on the Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen covers, "Maggie's Farm" and "The Ghost Of Tom Joad," the band shows some true influences that never really stood out before. The 12 song set is supported by two bonus live tracks: "Kick Out The Jams" and "How I Could Just Kill A Man," which just further solidify Rage's reputation as one of the best live bands of their time. The latter even features a guest appearance by B-Real and Sen Dog of Cypress Hill.
Overall, "Renegades" is a proper goodbye, that shows it's true roots and honors the band's influences with large amounts of respect and excellent musicianship. It's a shame that their last studio album wasn't original material, but this is just as good. With a Rage Against The Machine reunion on the horizon, who knows what the future will bring. But even if they don't make another album, "Renegades" still shows the band at their best, turning some classics into new anthems for the new millennium.
Rage Covers It All.......2006-12-16
This is a monster cover album. Not many bands can do an album of cover versions and do justice to many songs, but Rage make these songs their own.
Zach's crisp strong vocals are gripping as always and the band is peaking here.
Highlights are Microphone Fiend, Beautiful World, In My Eyes & Maggies Farm.
Pure heavy funk, not just for Rage fans....

In My Opinion this is just another work of pure genious by RATM, the fact that every song on here is good only adds to that...
Every thing here is pretty well perfect, the bonus tracks are pretty cool, and feature, "How I Could Just Kill A Man" with some other arttists.
Every thing here is near perfect, there isn't much more to say.

Album Description
Cymande Renegades of Funk, with its unreleased tracks, "Bird," etc., is a beautifully remastered and sequenced best of album. This special package includes rare vintage photographs of the band, updated liner notes and plus their most famous hit tracks from all three original Cymande LPs, from 1972-1974. The hit track "Bra," kicks off the album in all it's remastered glory. The breaks, horns and basslines sound stunningly current. This album also includes tracks used in Spike Lee's movies, Crooklyn and 25th Hour.
Cymande, pronounced (sah-mahn-day), was an eight member group hailing from Jamaica and the West Indies. They met after moving to London, and were the first to record a fusion of funk, jazz, soul and reggae. Much ahead of their time, they landed at the epicenter of two major movements in music; Dance/Rare Groove, and Hip Hop. Grandmasterflash and Kool Herc dropped Cymande's breaks at South Bronx block parties. And some of the artists who famously sampled Cymande's great tracks include De La Soul, Biz Markie, The Fugees and MC Solar, etc. Cymande also played the Apollo to raves and toured the USA with Al Green in 1973. This band deserves this kind of hommage and more.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Cymande Album Ever.......2005-07-14
The remastering on this record is practically a facelift for this vibrant funk and jazz band. I was so happy to have selected this new release. I can't believe how good Bra sounds. I just threw away my other cymande CD. It had too many flaws in quality. Plus these unreleased tracks are total classics. I especially love Bird. What a precursor to the chilled funk sounds of some of today's contemporary artists. This is the record that gives these eight very talented musicians the credit they deserve. Cheers.

Like coming home..........2006-02-24
The man who had us rocking from the 60's on is back in business and it's like coming home to hear this CD. From "Gauguin in the South Seas" to "Driftwood", the collection is classic Webb: beautifully arranged, beautifully played and sung.
I happen to think "Skywriter" should be added to the list of future standards. Maybe tomorrow I'll have a different opinion. I can't quite seem to take this CD out of my player. If you've loved Webb's works such as "El Mirage" you will probably feel the same way, too.
If you've just been introduced to Webb, don't be surprised you won't be after the rest of his works. Lucky you, to hear it and fall in love for the first time. Lucky me to embrace an old friend again.
Welcome back, Jimmy, it's good to have you recording again. You've been missed.
Webb the Melodic.......2005-08-24
After witnessing Jimmy Webb and Glen Campbell perform in New York at Feinstein's this year, I was eagerly awaiting this CD.At that show Campbell sang No Signs of Age which is included on this disk and Webb performed Time Flies solo. Both songs are destined to be standards-there melodicism and timeless lyrics move and inspire. How many albums include even 1 standard? A standard is a song singers want to sing regardless of music trends for eternity. The rest of the album includes gems such as How Quickly which after repeated listens inspires with it's sad message-- a feat few songwriters can carry off.The beauty of Webb's writing as in Skywriter and She Moves is his melodies married to his lyrics is masterful. There is a variety of Webb offerings on this album. But most of all it contains some of his most moving ballads.Skywriter,Time Flies,She Moves, and No Signs of Age are songs singers will want to sing and players will want to play.Thank you Jimmy.
Without Regret.......2005-08-21
Those of us who love Jimmy Webb as a performer and as a songwriter have waited with bated breath for 9 years for a new set of songs. As the Rhino set "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress: Jimmy Webb in the 70s" documents, Webb was an immensely powerful and inventive singer and songwriter. His albums have held their value as fans clamour to get copies. This set is probably not the place to begin for those seeking to hear the voice behind "Up, Up & Away" & "MacArthur Park." From the artwork sketch of a tired Jimmy and the cowboy sitting on his horse & the "Twilight" title, Webb is not going out with best shot, if this is intended as a parting shot. But his ardent fans like me will still welcome hearing yet a few more of his songs and his voice, even if it sounds a bit tired and offhand, not quite so full of passion at it had been. Vocally, the closer "Driftwood" written 15 years ago musters a great deal of passion and has Webb's lovely voice backed by his sister Susan whose voice blends seamlessly with Jimmy, "Through rainfall close ashore, Through the spray swept away, To the coastline tossed & torn, thrown high & falls to rest, Oh like people, baby like you & I." "How Quickly" has nice energy with Ira Segel's guitar percolating rhythmically and Beth Nielsen Chapman's vocals supporting the lovely melody, "So swiftly you turn without regret to the arms of your new lover, How quickly we forget." "Just Like Marilyn" is also a treat with Webb's witty lyrics, "In this old Ramada Inn bar singing 'All In Love Is Fair,' In this overstuffed naugahyde lounge with the organ thin trying to sound just like a singing violin." Of the other tracks, "Paul Gauguin In the South Seas" experiments with dissonance, painting a sonic landscape more than a pop song. "Class Clown" is a nice tune with Webb witty & worldly wise. While any Jimmy Webb set is going to have depth and intelligence, this is not the best. Knowing that, fans should still explore with confidence the nuances of this master musician's latest offering. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
His last great work.......2006-10-27
This album is simply awesome. As he continues to release mild albums with different musicians, he always seems to get it right when he's with his homeboys. On this one, the chemistry between he, Greg Demos and Jim McPherson clearly shows and each of their own natural tendencies for kicking rock melodies and rhythms shine through. The songwriting is inspired and it has just the right mid-fi crunchy sound. They sound like they're having fun, which I can't say as much for most of the stuff Bob has released since then.
The one-two punch of citizen fighter and kickboxer lightning (along with the cool quick-cut transition between the two) is one of the best things he's done.
Get this album.
bob apes the who.......2006-07-22
but he does it so well. another great song cycle by the master. buy it for edison's memos. it alone justifies the purchase. and the rest of the songs are real good, too. 7th level shutdown is another standout.
this is a different kind of record, the sound is muddy in the midrange yet the playing is tight and bob's vocals are in great form. you really owe it to yourself. and uncle bob could always use you support. so join the soft rock renegades today and help destroy the unbelievers!
hit it again.......2005-01-13
My personal fave Bob solo album. I admit, I am a GBV freak, but something about this solo record is really special to me. The chord choices are a little sadder, the songs a little more emotional and the sounds a bit more atmospheric than your average release by this artist, and the overall effect is an emotionally satisfying listen. Bally Hoo is particularly cool, in the way it incorporates two earlier songs from the album into its arrangement. Edisons Memos has a beautiful arrangement as well. Aeriel is simply gorgeous. This is a great record.
"Play some rock and ro-oool yeah!"
Nice work, Nice sound.......2001-11-05
This is going to sell to the usual limited group of Pollard fans (GBV) and pop music fanatics... so reviewing it is not really required.
Yes it's a good record; the guitar work is textured like I can't remember him doing recently, so that's nice. The words are always funny and sad and just plain odd, which is why we're all here at Mr. Pollard's feet, we love him for just that.
Unfairly ( Because life is not fair ) it won't sell like a Sting Record or Dave Mathews, but as we already know it's better than anything ever done by them...Keep going Bob, we need you.
another prized pollard piece.......2001-10-09
While perhaps not the ideal spot to come into GBV/Pollard saga, it rewards the diehard listener. I never considered myself a fanboy but with this release it has become apparent that I just enjoy Bob's take of rock which condenses the 60's and 70's punk/alt into a tasty frappe which is as much about nodding towards the past as it is about giving a personal stamp. Man of War filters the post big label sign-up lo-fi of Kid Marine, the album which this one shares the core band with, and older GBV articles like Vampire on Titus and Propeller. In other words a garage rock mixed metaphor buffet that car-crashes prog-rock whimsy with proto-punk directness. Two points of interest - The collapse of the pollard's personal life lends the album a more direct, almost confessional tone. And the military metaphors have a unexpected edge due to current events. But like all great works, these minor details do nothing to detract from the pure rock genius you find here.
For those who need highlights, there is plenty. From the Who style stomp of "I drove a tank" to the shambolic intensity of "Edison's Memos", from the sinewy stop-start of "40 yards" to the one-two post alien lanes push of "citizen fighter" and "kickboxer lightning", Man of War is a solid release. Ideal for those alienated by the arena rock of Isolation Drills. For the obssessed, all I have to say is "In Bob, We trust."

...Note that the 'bonus tracks' arent Australia only. 'Maggies Farm' and 'How I Could Just Kill a Man' are also on the U.S. version(they just arent listed as tracks). Since this one is alot more dough than the U.S. version, and they are basically the same, you would want that version instead.

Twilight of the Renegades - another Webb masterpiece.......2005-11-29
This is an absolutely wonderful album. Somehow Jimmy continues to write masterpieces. This is as good as anything he's done. Unfortunately, we won't hear much about these songs until someone records them and makes hits of them.
I wanted to like this album..........2005-08-18
...but ultimately couldn't!!!!
Agree with the other reviewers that "Paul Gaugin" is an excellent addition to the Jimmy Webb canon, but the remainder of the album is simply not up to scratch - and I say this from the perspective of one who considers "Ten Easy Pieces" one of my favourite albums of all time.
The other 2-3 strong songs on the album, in my opinion, are all done better on Michael Feinstein's magnificent "Only One Life" album of last year, recorded with Jimmy. Maybe Jimmy should have kept some of his creativity for his own recording, rather than selflessly giving it to Michael...
So - save your money with this album, but definitely buy Ten Easy Pieces and Only One Life instead!!!
"Paul Gauguin" is worth the price of admission.......2005-07-10
I have followed Jimmy Webb's songwriting career since the 1967 Johnny Rivers Rewind album. His words and music have continually been an inspiration to my own work and life. My copy of this long-awaited album arrived today. I opened it eagerly and played the lead off cut, "Paul Gauguin in the South Seas". 6 minutes and 45 seconds later I had tears in my eyes for the first time in years. What a great song! Never mind the rest of the CD, it's good enough. But "Paul Gauguin" is a masterpiece: if you don't get it the first time, play it again. And again. Thank you Jimmy Webb.
Without Regret.......2005-07-02
Enjoy!
JIMMY, DON'T RIDE INTO THE SUNSET WITH THIS ONE.......2005-06-28
WARNING: Do not be put off Jimmy Webb by what I have written below. I strongly urge every music lover to seek out and discover for himself or herself the magic in Jimmy Webb's music.
Jimmy Webb's new CD TWILIGHT OF THE RENGADES is a disappointment, a disheartening letdown for Webb aficionados who have waited years for a new album. The album does contain inspiring moments and classic Webb songs that have cried out to be recorded and that deserve to be known more widely - 'Time Flies', 'No Signs of Age', 'Paul Gauguin In The South Seas', 'How Quickly' - but these are not nearly enough to save the CD. Sadly, there are few peaks on this record. A stimulating song or performance is quickly deflated by a weak one. Three superb songs, ''Time Flies', 'No Signs of Age', and 'Skywriter', are saddled with poor vocal performances or muddled arrangements. I felt strangely listless after listening to this CD. A Jimmy Webb album usually leaves me soaring. At best, TWILIGHT OF THE RENEGADES is a half-hearted effort. My suspicion is that Jimmy Webb felt an obligation to make this album and no more. There was obviously little motivation to record the best album possible. Discouraging after years of being fed the line that Webb really was hard at work on a solo album.
Study the track list: plainly there was no will to write new songs (ignore the stated copyright dates: the bulk of these songs have their roots in the '80s). Nor was there a will to freshly record a CD's worth of songs (only 10 songs are recent recordings and the CD offers a meager 12 tracks). There appears not even to have been a will to select first-rate material from the abundant Webb song trunk ('Class Clown', 'She Moves, And Eyes Follow', 'Spanish Radio' hardly rank at the forefront of the Webb song catalogue and the less said about the execrable 'Why Do I...', bafflingly issued as a one track promo single in the UK, the better). Even the track sequence seems to have been slapped together with little planning or thought directed to the flow of songs (I reshuffle the tracks when playing the CD). Inexplicably, the lessons of TEN EASY PIECES, by far Webb's best-selling album and the ideal showcase for presentation of his songs (as attested by the recent UK performances), were either ignored or not absorbed. Who's advising this guy? One could spew further but why belabor the point.
The upshot: TWILIGHT OF THE RENEGADES adds up to about a quarter of the superior album I had anticipated from this artist. If you are a Jimmy Webb fan, as with anything Webb-associated, you must have this CD; if you are new to Webb, begin elsewhere (LETTERS, EL MIRAGE, TEN EASY PIECES, SUSPENDING DISBELIEF). Resolve, as well, to attend a Jimmy Webb concert, where you will experience more passionate and stirring renditions of many of the songs that appear on this CD. One wish: that Jimmy Webb recognize the self-evident failings of this album and set a goal to produce a masterwork worthy, as the CD's sleeve suggests, of riding into the sunset to.
