The Singles 86>98

Editorial Reviews

So Depeche Mode releases a singles compilation featuring only one previously unreleased song ("Only When I Lose Myself") in anticipation of a major tour. Sound suspiciously like a shameless cash-in? Sure. But The Singles, 86-98 needed to be made. This is a worthwhile purchase for casual admirers and completists alike. The two-disc set contains revamped versions of the major singles from 1986 to 1998 and a version of "Little 15" that was first released only in France. The set's "grand finale" is the live recording of "Everything Counts," from the 101 album. Although the original studio version of the "Everything Counts" single appeared on 1984's People Are People, DM fudged the chronology to justify including this astounding live recording on the album (a ploy to psych up concert-ticket buyers?). The live recording highlights the worshipful crowd applauding, cheering, and chant-singing "The grabbing hands / Grab all they can / Everything counts in large amounts" long after the song has ended. Ka-ching! --Beth Bessmer --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

New Musical Express
...[T]his two-CD collection shows how the grimy alleyways of cult approval opened out into shiny stadium Valhalla, singer Dave Gahan moving from songwriter Martin Gore's personal voyeur to rock star ringleader. All along, lurking behind the dungeon door and the bedsit curtains, Depeche Mode never really enjoyed the silence. All they ever wanted was the applause. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the greatest singles band ever........2007-07-21

Sure, Beatles fans would stone me to death for that one, but DM were influential and popular as well. They influenced many a goth/industrial act as well as popularized electronic music, and it's not just that, the songs are pretty catchy on the whole. The band's albums are ALL good, but they work well as a singles band too. This compilation uses the versions of the songs used as A-sides, so some of the mixes are different than you might remember them. The songs are all re-mastered here, and the treat for casual fans is you get to see the lyrics to ALL of the songs in here in the liner notes. Oh, and look at the price that Amazon's currently selling this at; if that's not a reason you should be getting this already then I don't know what would be.

Oh, for the people who are already fans, all that's worth mentioning is that classics like "Stripped," "Strangelove," "Personal Jesus," "Enjoy the Silence," "I Feel You," "It's No Good" and "Home" are here. These songs are more than worth buying "The Singles 86>98," and not only that, this isn't a bad first move for your collection of the band. This was the real creative peak for the band. There is only one new song here, "Only When I Lose Myself" and that one is pretty good. It's a more mellow track from the group and I think it works fine. You could also look for a used copy of the single (or if you prefer, the sixth or so singles box set) where you can hear the Dan the Automator remix, which is possibly better than the track in here.

"Condemnation," "In Your Room" and "A Question of Lust" play in different versions than on the respective albums that they originate. This makes a nice additions for the bigger fans like myself, and young ones like myself who find it hard to get their hands on every last single and box set of the group. You'll listen to this album and it's no coincidence they have an album called Music for the Masses. It's rock and only occasionally feels really rock ("I Feel You"), and while it's dark it is never really whiny or overly depressing. There is real emotion to the tracks and this collection, as well as the band selling out the Rose Bowl in Pasedena were things that they used to successfully bite tongues of the classic rock fans. Even the "lower" moments from the group are stuff that most bands wish their finest material could live up to be. "Barrel of a Gun" and "Little 15" are not personal favorites of mine but work fine enough in this collection.

Feeling nostalgic? Want to hear a catalog of a really great band's music? Look no further than this compilation and if not you can sell it; many people will probably want it anyhow.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best electronic bands.......2007-06-18

Depeche Mode does their brand of electronic music very well, with songs that are catchy and stick in the head and are a few times even emotionally evocative. This is a 2-disc compilation, with the first disc being the stronger one, probably cuz it's the one with the radio hits. But the second disc definitely has some gems too. Good stuff on disc 1:

Never Let Me Down Again
Personal Jesus
Enjoy the Silence
Policy of Truth
World in My Eyes

Disc 2 meritorious melodies:

Barrel of Gun
It's No Good
Everything Counts

If you like sythesizer, you'll like this.

This compilation is the greatest collection of their greatest music, no one should be without these CD's if they are a fan!

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars, most definitely.......2007-03-22

Great CD. Practically every song on this is good and enjoyable to listen to. If you like Depeche Mode, you will most definitely like this. Depeche Mode is a great group. They have great vocals and the music is like no other. There is a reason why Depeche Mode has been around for over 20 years. Their music is top-notch.

5 out of 5 stars All The Hits Bagged In One!.......2006-11-23

There was no hesitation picking this one up in the record store. All the singles by Depeche Mode you've heard and loved ( excluding their latest ) are all on this one. Some tracks can get a little anoying - its always about "a question of" this and that ( you DM fans should know what I'm talking about ). But since this two disc set has all the favorites, ITS A MUST HAVE! I'm not so much of a Depeche Mode "fan" but I am pleased to own this set. You'll be just as pleased, it's just a question of whether you get this one or not. So go on and get it already!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All their classic singles, fantastic!! .......2005-08-28

This album is as essential as their studio-albums Welcome To Hell, Black Metal and At War With Satan. One of the many cool things about Venom was that they recorded new stuff for their singles, they did not use songs from their studio albums. In their classic period (81-86) they released 6 singles: In League With Satan, Bloodlust, Die Hard, Warhead, Manitou and Nightmare. All, and their B-sides, are represented on this collection, except Nightmare. Why they did not include Nightmare and its B-side Satanachist is beyond me. But still the collection of songs here is great, 2 of my favourite Venom songs are on this album (and not on their studio albums): Bloodlust and Acid Queen. Other essential classics include Warhead, Seven Gates Of Hell, Die Hard, Manitou and In Nomine Satanus. If you only own the studio albums you are missing out on some of Venoms greatest songs, on some of the greatest black metal songs really.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable just for one tune alone.......2004-11-29

That tune being SHE'S MY BEST FRIEND. Originally done by The Velvet Underground. At the risk of getting wizzed on by Lou Reed, let it be known that I infinitely prefer The WP's version to The VU's version. David Gedge's whispery vocal is pure pleasure. (Gedge makes arch-whisperer Ira Kaplan look like a cheapjack amateur.)

      4 out of 5 stars GREAT MIX.......2000-10-04

This is a great collection, with the bonus of lots of TWP live tracks thrown in. The Wedding Present are not to be missed live, just for your information! They are brilliant and loud live! This really is a singles collection, and as great as the singles are, I am more an advocate of buying their actual albums... I advise you to get Seamonsters for sure!

5 out of 5 stars The best songs TWP ever did.......2000-07-07

About ten years ago, when I was a student, I'd listen to "Seamonsters" every evening. I also listened to the CD singles I had managed to find somewhere - it wasn't easy to find them in Germany. I remember I went to see a concert in Cologne and I wished TWP would release a live album. This double CD is a very pleasant reminder of those days. The CDs comprise singles and live tracks from their best period (imho). They never got any better.

5 out of 5 stars Give me my wedding present.......1999-10-29

If, like me, you think the jaunty, jangly jam of the Velvet Underground's "What Goes On" is just about as good as rock and roll gets, well then you'll very much be digging this band.

5 out of 5 stars a good intro for neophytes, and a must for long-time fans.......1999-03-30

The wedding present's much neglected RCA singles are collected here, along with a few other rarities and live tracks.

      4 out of 5 stars Compilation 1986-1990.......2003-04-12

WDC is a French Psycho/Garage band with dark melodies, fun vocals, sax solos and vegetables everywhere. This cool CD contains some of the best tracks from their albums plus a few unissued and live tracks.
The band have influences from many types of music, but most of all I would call Psychobilly and Surf. My favorite tracks are "Surf & Destroy", "Pizza Attack", "Psychodelic Neurosis" and many others.
If you're a fan of WDC (after listening them on "Psycho Attack Over Europe!" compilation) or if you want to becamse familiar with them - I would recommend this one.
If you're a serious fan (I mean collector) - then go and buy "Beast Off" which contains two first albums on one CD.
