Prolonging the Magic [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A kinder, gentler Cake? You'd never know it from listening to the opening track, a ditty with the rather unconventional title "Satan Is My Motor." But the truth is, most of Prolonging the Magic finds the Sacramento, California, quintet toning down the arch commentary of tracks such as "Rock and Roll Lifestyle" and "The Distance" from albums Motorcade of Generosity and Fashion Nugget. In its place is straight-ahead observational songwriting on "Alpha Beta Parking Lot" and "Guitar," and the naked, if still quirky, relationship commentaries "Where Would I Be?" and "Walk on By." Not to worry: The group's trademark humor is still in place on "You Turn the Screws" and "Sheep Go to Heaven," while touches of steel guitar and musical saw expand their already unusual sonic palette. As the title suggests, Cake seems capable of prolonging the magic a while longer. --Daniel Durchholz --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
Entertainment Weekly
...[N]o track goes the distance like their 1996 novelty hit "The Distance." Proceed with caution, unless your quirk quotient has been magically prolonged. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

FACT.......2007-07-19
BEST CAKE CD EVER! In my opinion, by the time you listen to this cd twice, you will already have fallen in love with 60% of it, by the time you listen to it 5 times it will be 100% it is catchy as hell.
They do it again.......2007-05-15
If you're a Cake fan, you've probably bought this already. It's slightly more polished than, say, "Pressure Chief" (still my favorite), but it still has that marvelous musicality and wry lyrics. If you're new to the band, I recommend you buy more than one CD to experience their extensive range of musical styles.
Cake's lowest point.......2006-12-20
I bought Prolonging the Magic years ago with high expectations. The first four tracks are good, and are worth the low price. Satan Is My Motor was of the quality I expected from Cake, coming in solidly with John McCrea's solid vocal and a tight groove from the band. The melancholy Mexico follows, another solid song, not quite as good as the first track. Never There, the single, is a departure from everything else on the album to make a single in the style of The Distance, but after awhile the catchy hook grows thin, as the song lacks much substance. Guitar is a nice song too. The rest of the album is listenable, mostly, but is all filler except Sheep Go To Heaven. From a musician's point of view, the rest of the album is plain, boring chord progressions, lyrics that appear to have meaning but are actually quite empty.
Prolonging The Magic is a bland album.
Cake Fricken Rocks!!!!!.......2006-05-03
Cake may be the sweetest band i have ever heard in my entire life. They understand rock and know how to make a man chill. Chill, that's how life should always be. Cake thanks for saving my travashamockery music life before i first listened to Cake. Cake is the reason i don't listen to 50 cent and gangsta jams of such. Oh, yea! Did i mention how much Cake rocks?
The Magic Continues.......2006-01-25
Like most people, I first heard Cake when they released "Fashion Nugget". But for me, it was this album that really made me a fan. I've since bought all their albums and I love them all, But this one is still my favorite.
"Magic" is upbeat, witty, and fun. "Satan Is My Motor", "Mexico" "Guitar" are some favorites, but the whole thing is solid. Seriously, there isn't a weak track to be found. I think it's their most complete album.
I highly recommend Prolonging the Magic, and all the other CAKE albums.

Maaaaannnn, I love CAKE. I don't understand how some FANS could not like this cd. Or any of their cds. I love them all. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. You can't even begin to understand. You should buy this CD IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER.
Cake goes the distance.......2001-08-31
The third Cake disk, cleverly titled "Prolonging the Magic", hits hard with thirteen amazing tracks.
The album starts off with "Satan Is My Motor", a song laced with parody and clever lyrics. Most feel the song is a direct refrence to the dark prince himself. Could it be?
A soothing rock song "Mexico" follows, creating an atmosphere worthy of a well lit night club.
Never There, one of the strongest tracks on the disk follows this, followed by "Guitar" and "You Turn The Screws".
A few happy-go-lucky songs come along. "Walk On By", and "Sheep Go To Heavan" have great beats, and clever lyrics once again.
The most creative track is "When You Sleep". A song about where people put their hands while in the act of sleeping could only be created by this sacrimento quartet.
"Hem Of Your Garment" is next, quoting the Bible, not referring to it. The Bass is heavy and the chorus is amazingly catchy.
"Alpha Beta Parking Lot" is calming, and chilling; creating a mood of joyous sorrow. The song leaves an impression long afterwards - much like the aftertaste of a pickle.
Afterwards is "Let Me Go", a love song that proves a point, while making you bob your head.
"Cool Blue Reason"'s lyrics are chilling, and mark your mind with footprints. The song instills something of a sad dilemna.
And finally, the disk comes to a close with "Where Would I Be". A touching Love song that, while being a love song, still packs some amazing bass and drums. The eerie sounding introduction makes you lift your head.
Beautiful music, Great Lyrics, Amazing C.D.
Cake Surprises Again.......2001-07-16
Cake had one hit wonder written all over them after "The Distance." Seemed to be a bit of a novelty song. However, they are quite varied in their styles, and this CD reflects that. "Sheep go to Heaven" and "Never There" keep the same song format as Fashion Nugget, and reflect the creativity of the songwriting. I don't know about song one, with references to Satan, but the rest of the songs are suitable for playing. Alpha Beta Parking Lot is a great stalker song, and they keep coming up with novelty songs that just rock! They remind me, lyrically, of the Presidents, but with staying power. A good, solid album.
Great stuff.......2000-07-29
An awesome album; I can listen to it for hours on end. NEVER THERE rocks the house, and the remaining tracks are awesome as well. It's like moss - it becomes beautiful and grows on you if you will let it.
a REAL music fan.......1999-11-25
You close minded fool. To simply brush aside two of the band's own compositions with such a dismissive, sweeping motion is both ignorant and arrogant. Perhaps next time Cake will take perseonal orders as to each individual person's unique preferences? Until that day, you just may have to live with what the band itself considered worthy of recording material. A critic is nothing but an artist with no talent.

Customer Reviews:
Best album ever.......2001-02-20
This cake album is the bets i've heard. Although their previous works have been very strong, nothing can match the usually mellow and always odd musical and lyric abilities of these boys. This tape once got stuck in my tape deck for 4 months. It was possibly the best thing that has ever happened to me. If you're a fan of music, you need to own this album. Nothing can match the mellowness of mexico, or the irony of satan is my motor. Cool blue reason is another strong track although somber in lyrics and tone. But basically, every track is amazing. The best album ever, without a doubt.
