5 out of 5 stars What are the US record companies thinking???.......2003-12-08

Do not buy this version!!! This is an incredible collection of songs that is ruined by the label that released it here in the US. How can the title track "Who's Gonna Tell" be edited off this album for US release? That is the song that contains the "Painting it Red" lyric. Did the morons editing this record for US release listen to 5 second samples of each song and make an "educated" decision?? The Beautiful South get absolutely no respect in the US. Why? Because we base our opinions on pure media hype not artisitic content. Do you think Gaze will ever get released in the US? I recommend purchasing the double CD of Painting it Red plus the new CD Gaze today! You won't be sorry. FYI. Munch, the DVD release by the Beautiful South will work on your computer DVD player!
THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH FOREVER!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars I miss Jacqueline.......2003-10-29

This album breaks my heart because it is the last I will hear of my beloved Jacqueline, with the band. I love Paul, but my heart has always been partial to Jacque. Saying that, I am looking forward to the new record and many more fantastic adventures from Paul and the gang.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-12-20

Mainly, I bought this album on the strength of Blue is the Colour, which was a great album, with one of the best kick-off songs of all time in 'Don't Marry Her.' This music, on the other hand, is bland, banal, and boring; utterly unconvincing. I doubt it would even help if I was British; These love songs just don't transfer well through the ear or to the heart. Buy it for your mother who's home alone all day, though, and it just might be your good deed for the month.

2 out of 5 stars The worst album of TBS.......2002-02-22

I bought all the collection of TBS, so I hope my opinion would help you. For me, Painting It Red is the worst album of all. Only the track number 10 and 12 are really good. The rest of the songs are realy poor. Another albums of TBS like "Miaow" or "Choke" are really better.

5 out of 5 stars It is that a wrinkle on your forehead? I don't think so........2001-11-18

You know you are an elder statesman when many are eagerly waiting in their wings for your 'misses'. As with beautiful supermodels, they look for any sign of aging and similarly for rock stars, sign of cirrhosis. It seems to me that with the release of a Beautiful South album of late, there would be a group of fans who lash out at them. Is Beautiful South on the slipperly slope to the land of ex-pop stardom and the members should check their retirement accounts to ensure that they won't run out of beer money for the rest of their lives? Fat chance.

Not with this one, at least. Sure, there is a growing sign of tiredness of remaking old records which will probably mean strong witty lyrics and so-so music. What sets 'Painting it Red' apart is the venture into different music genres. The playfulness is not so much in the lyrics anymore but instead in the wide variety of musical arrangements. From the hip street beat 'Just Checkin' to sentimental ballad 'The River' to slightly soulful 'Baby Please Go'. This is arguably the first time in years you can filter out the lyrics and still have a pretty decent record from them. All the songs are pretty consistent, equally good although there are no killer tunes ala 'Song for Whoever' or 'Rotterdam.'

I certainly hope that Beautiful South will keep on making excellent records such as this, but all the enticement the past fans have thrown at me might one day prove irresistible. Until then, they are my chosen drug tonight.

3 out of 5 stars Paul Heaton, if you're reading this..........2001-07-19

Time to ditch the BS and embark on your long-awaited solo career. All we need is your ethereal voice and your brilliant lyrics. Period.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry... but I hoped for better.......2000-11-24

I absolutely love TBS, especially their early work, but this album is somewhat of a disappointment. I agree with another reviewer that one must listen to this album a number of times and let it grow before making a decision. One or two songs may make it into the charts, but there is nothing here that will send shivers down your spine like Perfect 10, or any of their past hits for that matter.

There are 20 tracks, most of which are slow ballads. Although there is a good variety of vocals, the music is rather background-ish, and many riffs and beats seem based on their previous work. So far, I haven't heard too much of that fantastic wit and sarcasm that makes for their usually great lyrics.

Overall, I would wish for less quantity and more quality, and I do not feel that the three extra tracks make it worth the price premium. If you are new to The Beautiful South, then perhaps get their "Carry On Up The Charts" first, or actually any other album of theirs will do. For the fans like me this is obviously a must, because after all, mediocre stuff from TBS is a whole lot better than most of the other music that comes out these days.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome return to the beautiful south.......2000-10-30

Contrary to the above review, I absolutely LOVE this album. Yes, it does take a while to get going, but there are some outstanding songs that take the beautiful south into new territory -- especially "You Can Call Me Leisure." What a fabulous song. No, there aren't any 36D's, Perfect 10's, A Little Time's, or whatever, but notwithstanding "Painting It Red" finds TBS in top form!! Paul Heaton continues to be the most literate and observant songwriter and Dave Rotherway's music is the perfect compliment to Paul's astute wit and sensitivity. This is the beautiful south that's suddenly aware of it's own mortality and that age is slowly creeping on them. This is an older, wiser Beautiful South and they are all the better for it. Definetely one of their finer moments (right there with "Quench" and "0898). Cheers, mates!

3 out of 5 stars There's an album in there...........2000-10-24

Well being a big TBS fan I ordered the "bonus" 20 track version of this disk from the UK early.

As many have mentioned before, there are no golden tracks here, no Perfect 10's (although there is a version of that one), no 36D, no Red Eyes, etc. There is an albums worth of good tunes here, you'll just need to pick them out and burn your own CD to make listening worth while.

Paul's voice is less than interesting, and the normal punch behind the lyrics just isn't there. That being said, I would say that the lyrics are up to TBS standards, just not the music.

If you're a big TBS fan, then by all means buy it, there are enough good tunes to make it worth the dollars, if you're new to TBS, then start elsewhere.
