Dodi don't just challenge conventions; they toy with them, beat them into submission, and toss them out the window. Fronted by vocalist Archie O'Connor--a caustic hybrid of David Bowie and Jello Biafra--Dodi continually play with listeners' expectations by serving up maddeningly catchy hooks and then shifting gears with unforeseen breaks, quirky instrumentation, and loopy voice samples. From the first track, "Last Week," they showcase their brand of neurotic soul, with O'Connor spewing his self-doubt and anger like a manic Al Green. Meanwhile, the band lays down the perfect groove, building it to a heated crescendo with the help of female backing vocals and Peter Spotts's tweaked-out synthesizers. Multi-instrumentalist Spotts serves as Dodi's secret weapon, lending the songs their quirkiness by throwing in everything from vibraphones to a didgeridoo. On "Heavy Hearted," Spotts's vibes fuel the song as James Palmer's guitars incessantly scratch at the door, finally kicking it in with a wall of distortion. For all O'Connor's heated invectives on relationships, humanity, and life in general, he still manages to come up with surprisingly humorous lyrics, particularly on Dodi's ultimate curveball, "Pussy," a gender-bending tale of self-discovery and gratification. O'Connor's misanthropic cynicism takes a back seat on the life-affirming "Firecracker," an amphetamine-laced anthem about the carnal pleasures of life, punctuated by Palmer's slinky guitar and brilliant backing vocals. The spot-on rhythm section of bassist Michael Wells and drummer Andy Davenhall navigates Dodi through all this painstakingly constructed musical anarchy, managing to provide a solid center to a stunning record with so much happening it can only reveal itself with repeated listens. --Paul Ducey

I wish this CD had been around when I was planning my wedding as it would have been great for helping the bride to select music! Still, it's wonderful to listen to now.

I've always enjoyed Great Wedding music and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of MEHDl (pronounced medie). After an online search I found their site (S00THINGMUSIC,C0M) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Tomaso Albinoni fan of, I find MEHDl to be a great addition to this CD. I had them both in my multi-disc CD player during the wedding and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

Highly recommended. Even has suggestions for pre-ceremony, processional, ceremony, and recessional inside. 2 different versions of Midsummer Night's Dream march included - one with trumpet and organ and one with a full orchestra. Lots of great selections, well recorded.

I used this cd to help me plan which songs I wanted to use for each part of the wedding. This cd helps you suggest the placement for the prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional. The cd mainly has classical songs, but it does have a few of "today's" songs. There could have been a few more songs they could have added. But overall, its a good cd.

    I was really glad that I ordered this CD. My fiance and I are in the process of picking out music for our ceremony, and this cd has been helpful so far. There is a lot of beautiful music on it (a few not so beautiful songs--mostly the voices), as I'm a singer myself, I'm very picky about music. The instrumental pieces are great, and I'm excited to use them as the processional and recessional.
    Just beware, the accompanying book is JUST vocal music, not the instrumental pieces. It also does not include every song on the cd, which I found to be dissapointing.

    Album Description

    Berliners say New York's Rebecca Garfein is causing a revival of Reform Judaism in Germany; this mezzo-soprano is making history with her music, recorded in the country where her great -grandmother perished in the Holocaust. In 1997, she became the first female cantor to sing in a synagogue in Germany; where she performed as part of Berlin's International Jewish Cultural Festival; and this exquisite 1998 release captures that ground - (and stained-glass ceiling) - breaking moment. It contains Jewish songs and prayers in Hebrew and Yiddish, selections from the Book of Ruth and Song of Songs - liturgical music previously only chanted my male clergy - operatic in character, performed in what was once the women's gallery in the Oranienburger Strasse Synagogue before its destruction. This live performance was attended by Jews and non-Jews, women and men, together, shattering the historical separation of faiths and genders. Beautiful, significant, and highly recommended!

    Hmm... Ok, maybe it was not the best reason to want to buy this CD, but I heard one of the songs on it, Hashkiveynu, performed (partially) during an episode of the West Wing, and it sounded AMAZING (it was NOT the same cantor as on this CD). I am not Jewish and not even very spiritual, but I wanted to have that song in my collection.
    I immediately searched the web for the info, got the name of the chant and found this CD. I almost purchased it without listening, when I found a different site, where they actually have rather long excerpts (2 min.) of most tracks, so I listened to them.
    Boy, was I relieved and disappointed at once! Relieved that I didn't buy the CD and disappointed that I couldn't get the song I wanted (I was willing to buy a whole CD for just 1 song, that's how much it impressed me).
    The song sounds very little like the one from the West Wing, although I do believe that the site where I found the info speficially pointed to this CD as having a recording of the same song used in the show. And I'm sorry to say it but the voice also doesn't hold a candle to the one used on the show - way too "operatic", as mentioned by many, and harsh and even unpleasant-sounding to me. It took all the charm and candor right out of the song (in the show, they had a much more natural voice do the song). I also agree that the choir does not mesh well with the soloist.
    If anyone knows where and if I can purchase a recording of this song done by a different singer (if it can be the one from the West Wing, I'll be thrilled), please, let me know. In the meantime, I'm passing on this CD...

    Cantor Rebecca Garfein has a magnificent voice which expresses the oft-overlooked nuances in the music she has chosen for this recording. Able to perform equally well in the metzo soprano and soprano ranges, the cantor delights the listener with thrilling high notes and sultry lower registers.

    Cantor Rebecca Garfein's Sacred Chants is a memorial tribute to the cultural and spiritual greatness of the pre-war German Jewish synagogue. Some of the numbers were composed by Jews on Jewish themes -- for example, Mah Tovu by Cantor Meir Finklestein or Ahavat Olam by Cantor Morris Barash. Other numbers were composed by non-Jews, but they express traditional Jewish values. Throughout, Cantor Garfein sings with love and passion in the spirit of her tradition. Additionally, the beautiful organ music is wonderful to hear for those of us who have enjoyed hearing organ music as part of our Reform Jewish liturgy.

    I have to admit, it am in the process of converting and wanted a contemporary collection of Jewish music in the house. I was especially excited because it featured a female cantor. Unfortunately, I played this CD and it...reminded me of church not synagogue! Lovely for what it is though, with the opera voice, choir and organ music. Not quite what I expected.

    I find this CD really soothes my road rage in the car and makes me feel that nothing bothers me. Overall, the tracks may sound similar if you are paying attention to your driving, but that's not a bad thing when they're all good. But when I bring it inside and pay attention, I find the subtleties to be enjoyable and charming. Avinu Malkeinu is my favorite, bringing tears to my eyes the first time I heard this version.

    This CD was a recommendation to me by friends, and now I am making the same recommendation to others.

    This music arranged by Rachel Van Voorhees is simply beautiful and relaxing. There are 35 separate pieces, varied and lovely. There are some klezmer-origin type songs, yet they are lively but soft, and blend well with the rest of the CD. The sound quality is excellent.

    Though I haven't been raised with Jewish music and therefore don't know whether the meanings of some of the songs would be appropriate for various formal events (like weddings), I can say that out of the 35 songs, there are surely some that would be suitable regardless of whether the event is a wedding, a nice Shabbat dinner, meditation, or simply relaxation as you're falling asleep.

    This CD by master harpist Rachel Van Voorhees has over 25 tracks of wonderful Jewish music. You'll find favorites such as Zum Gali Gali, Dreydl, Erev Shel Shoshannim, Hatikvah, Kvare Achare Chatzot (my personal favorite) and many, many other selections. Van Voorhees exhibits a wide array of tone colors, tempos, and styles in the music, which she arranged herself. This CD would make a perfect gift, and would serve well as background music to any party, Shabbat dinner, or simply as a relaxer! I highly recommend Rachel Van Voorhees' Jewish Favorites.

      I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

          For an album of music from a culture I know virtually nothing about there is an incredible pull to listen again and again. This album is a treasure and a delight and should have appeal and meaning for any serious listener. The superb vocals both male and female are clear, sincere and delightful to the ear. Opera fans can enjoy this as a palate cleanser. No nonsense... Just straight beautiful tones. Buy it.

          This is a truly inspirational album, particularly for those who may be overfamiliar with the liturgy commonly practiced in modern synagogues. Drawing upon an old and rich program of music by Sephardic Jews living in the middle ages, Alia Musica presents a controlled but enlightening, moving, and spiritually engaging set of prayers and poems in Hebrew and Spanish.

          For this reviewer, this album was one of the most delightful finds of my life. I highly recommend it, no matter what your religious affiliation is.
