Ladysmith Black Mambazo proved itself pliable enough when the a capella group was heavily featured on Paul Simon's Graceland. Other crossover collaborations have followed, but few work as seamlessly as this collection, which features old LBM songs, Zulu traditionals and European classical material done in collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra. The rich vocal sound literally fuses with the classical musicians in much the same way as a classical choral group does. To its credit, the orchestra (and arranger Isak Roux) loosens up to fit the more oral/aural traditions of the singers--the music is less precise and reliant on virtuosity. The orchestra provides a particularly sympathetic counterpoint on the traditional "Awu Wemadoda" and is downright playful sounding on "Dona Nobis Pacem." Sounding as elegant and reverent, Ladysmith more than meets the orchestra halfway on the famous Bach choral piece "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." Making borders and boundaries irrelevant, this is a work of startling beauty that couldn't be improved upon. --Tad Hendrickson

Simply Amazing!.......2007-02-12

I have been a fan of Ladysmith for many years and have a few of their albums but this is simply amazing! Music truly has no boundaries and they have used their God given talent to touch the lives of many people. It doesn't sound like it's possible, but they have really crossed many boundaries and this album is just another example of how far one can go if only they believe!

This CD has multipal messages, but the one that strikes me most is the juxtaposition of European "classical" and African "classical". The human soul is one and at the same time unique. That message comes through clearly, and as a bonus, the powerful messages that each track provides in both content and style must not be missed.

I had never heard of this group before and since I like to investigate different types of music, I decided to give it a try. I have truly enjoyed this CD. The more I listen, the more I like. I would highly recommend.

When I first saw the album, I thought---what???? Traditionally, Ladysmith Black Mambazo sings acapella with the notable exceptions of the times they accompany Paul Simon. The group sings a beautiful, close harmony and uses vocalese techniques to provide the occasional percussive click or ululation. Still, the lineup was hard to resist.

"No Boundaries" is pretty amazing stuff, let me tell you. With the help of the English Chamber Orchestra directed by Ralph Gothoni, the two groups meet together on each other's common ground. Ladysmith sings traditional "Amazing Grace", Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" Schubert's "Sanctus." Then the orchestra gets into the African groove for music from South Africa.

Altogether a beautifully arranged, sung, and orchestrated work. If you are new to Ladysmith, this is a good CD to start. If you're an old fan, you'll definitely want "No Boundaries" to complete your collection.

The collaboration between Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the English Chamber Orchestra cannot be improved. The sound that both ensembles make together truly is beautiful indeed, as the original Mambazo songs (of which includes "Jabulani (Rejoice)", "Lifikile Ivangeli (The Gospel Arrives)"), the Zulu traditional selections ("Awu Wemadoda (Hey, Man)", "Walil'Umntwana (The Child is Crying)") to the classicals "Dona Nobis Pacem", a joyous song in its own right, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Ave Verum Corpus". This album definately and distinctly proves that music has no boundaries. Mambazo founder and lead singer Joseph Shabalala and Orchestra conductor Ralf Gothoni (along with arranger Isak Roux) have brought to their many fans a selection of compelling and captivating tunes.

Don't want no more........2006-06-15

This is a CD single of Boy George's title song from "The Crying Game". Great song, but the two remixes here lose some of the charm of the song. There are remixes of two other songs from The Crying Game soundtrack (produced by the Pet Shop Boys), "Let the Music Play" by Carroll Thompson and "Live For Today" by Cicero with Sylvia Mason-James. These remixes aren't that great.

When Boy George was the flavor du jour in the U.K. fronting Culture Club in the early 1980s, he was more of a curiosity in the U.S. than anything else His music career as a solo artist never got off the ground and then one day he was brought in to sing a version of the 1960's song "The Crying Game" in a production by the Pet Shop Boys. The track ended up being the title song for the movie that was the big hush-hush word of mouth hit of the winters of 1992-93 and Boy George's first hit in the U.S. as a solo artist. This CD-Single is not the traditional sort, in that you do not get the "hit" version of the single, but rather a pair of mixes (Digifunky String Mix and Digifunky Diva Dub). There are a pair of mixes for "Let the Music Play" as well, but the last track, "Live For Today" is the best of the bunch. Boy George released a few more solo albums, which were much more personal efforts than his previous ones and avoided doing the sort of covers that were so successful here, along with an autobiography entitled "Take It Like a Man." However, today his singing career has taken a back seat to putting out albums of underground artists heard in clubs. No one can accuse Boy George of not being faithful to his roots.

One of the five best EP's of all time..........2003-11-17

Welcome to post-hardcore's defining moment, when Delaware suddenly became important. Six songs that although slightly similar, became one of the biggest revolutions in hardcore music. Magic Bullet's first release ever, Boy Sets Fire lays down six incredibly emotional pieces full of the voice of the suffering people. With liner notes telling an amazing story of a leechmaster nation, the lyrics are full of sight, wisdom, and energy. The music, although obviously primitively recorded, is excellent in structure and tone, very powerful and driving. The guitar is already full of the BSF sound, the vibrant melodies and excellent chord progressions, and the stunning controlled shift in melody when Nathan's voice shines through. Nathan Gray has one of the most unique vocals for hardcore music, but there is nothing else that could power this band like he does. With emotion that shatters most of the emo out today, his voice soars on this sub 21 minute EP, cutting to the heart of the struggle. This is history right here. If you don't own it...yeah...

This like every other BSF ablum just rocks you so hard you can't find your socks afterwards. If you like hardcore music then this album and any other BSF album is for you!

Pre-Interlude.......2001-01-26

As I await with bated breath the soon-to-be-released 'Interlude' (a collection of tracks recorded during the same epoch as those featured on 'SOund of Water,' their most subtle/sublime record ever) ... I make do with this import EP which contains three tracks: the Hybrid mix of 'Boy is Crying,' the Si-Cut DB mix of 'Northwestern' and the Paul Van Dyk mix of 'How we used to live.' The first is (apparently) a longer version of the 'edit' which will appear on Interlude, although it is only 5.15 here! (I suspect the edit will simply excise the dreamy .45 prelude, no great loss.) It is more propulsive, less coy, than the original. Depending on my mood, this is a good/bad thing. 'Northwestern' is contained here in a terrific dub-style mix. Not having heard the original, I listen and imagine the heartbreak which this version keeps at bay but -- and this is crucial -- without entirely vanquishing. Fierce and sad in equal quantities, like 'Archway People.' The first 2.45 of the 8.48 Van DYke mix is mindless disco fun, which is OK but seems to have little relation to the original. WHen he finally begins sampling the vocals (3 minutes in) it momentarily seems all wrong. But when the beat kicks in (3.45) and the vocals are overlaid on them it suddenly lifts to heaven. Easily the best remix of this epic epic song.
