5 out of 5 stars The best of the Dead.......2007-07-07

Quite an awesome CD- Covers everything from the early hits to later music- Takes you from "Truckin'" to "Touch of Grey" all with great digital quality- A must for anyone checking out the band's music now- All the Deadheads already have it-

3 out of 5 stars Like it alot.......2007-07-03

It is great car music. Not "jammy" so I don't have to worry about breaking into dance while driving! Would be better if it did have a live tune or two.

5 out of 5 stars groovy tunes.......2007-05-14

I love the Dead and this is a great collection of some of their best!!!
Jerry will live on thru his music

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion).......2007-05-12

This album does not exist for the converted. It's not here for the tried and true Deadhead. You've already got all of this, most likely in a far superior live version from a sound board tape.

This collection exists for that guy who has heard "Touch of Grey" and "Truckin'" on the radio and wants to own them, but doesn't want to wear tye-die. It exists for that young kid who has heard legend of the Dead, but was too young too see them and missed the boat. It exists for the folks who are curious about their music yet feels intimidated by the vast amount of material available out there (106 officially released titles to date, not including all the tapes out there...) .

This disc exists for these folks, and in that light it works very well. Sure, it's incomplete as any single-disc best of by a band who recorded for 30 years would be, but it covers all the major bases. And it does so better than the "Skeletons...", "...Long Strange Trip..." and "Arista Years" compilations do, and is far-superior in sound quality than any of them. Above all, it whets the appetite for more.

So for the uninitiated, this is the best place to begin your long, strange trip. For some, this may be all you need. But chances are you'll find yourself wanting more...

5 out of 5 stars the best of the best.......2007-04-11

ANY BEGINER GRATEFUL DEAD FAN SHOULD BUY THIS CD
IT HAS ALL THE ESSENTIALS BUY THIS AND WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP ITS BEEN AND THEN YOU GRATEFUL DEAD COLLCTIONS COMPLETE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other than "Black Betty", just some mediocre southern rock. But worth it just for that.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not an original band.......2006-04-20

I bought this cd cuz i love the black betty tune...w/great expectation i figured their other material was gonna blow me away...wrong...Ram Jam should have named themselves Rip-OFF
Jam....after listening to this cd i have concluded that they didnt't have an original bone in their bodies...the songs were a mishmash of blatant allman/skynyrd/blackfoot attempts...the vocals were without energy or feel...i can understand why they wernt sucessful where others were

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for awesome riffs, average singing.......2005-12-27

Ram Jam was an accidental discovery. I have been eyeing this cd for a while now, and now that I've listened to it, I can say that if you like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, or even AC/DC, this is your music. The one song that I really don't care for is "keep your hands on the wheel", but that's only because of the singing, which isn't great, but it gets the job done. The song "High Steppin'" is a good instrumental song, too. All in all, buy this, it pretty much rules.

5 out of 5 stars Black Betty Ready.......2005-11-10

The song "Black Betty" is reason enough to buy this CD. It contains the long-play version of this song..crank it up so the neighbors can give you dirty looks. As for the other tracks they are just ok. But Black Betty makes it worth the investment. Rocked in '77, rocks now.

5 out of 5 stars Both of their LPs on 1 CD!!.......2005-03-18

Ram Jam were a very hard rocking 70's band fronted by Bill Bartlett, formerly of the Lemon Pipers (yeah, the Green Tambourine guys). The albums were produced by bubblegum producers Kasentetz-Katz (same guys who produced Lemon Pipers, 1910 Fruitgum Co. and a lot of other 60s hits). But the Ram Jam albums really rocked hard (especially the lesser known 2nd album titled Portrait of the Young Artist as a Ram). Black Betty was a top 40 hit (a remake of an old Leadbelly song)and was fairly representative of their 1st LP. If all you've ever heard is the single version, which is on most compilations, you owe it to yourself to hear the full version which has a much longer middle section that rocks. This import CD contains both LPs and has everything released by this band except Should've Known Better, which was the B side to the Black Betty single. Great very underrated stuff!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars schmokin'.......2007-01-12

Here's the scoop. There's something mighty suspicious about all of these post-mortem, post legal disputes, J Garcia estate releases -- the estate has its own agenda and lost time to make up -- but at least Rhino's participation in this release establishes a level of creditability. Anyway, Disc one starts off well enough as the first Garcia solo cd is remastered and all of the "songs" therefrom are included. They sound great and this reviewer thinks that they all sound better without the trippy interludes that used to scare the dickens outta' me.

BUT-- cd one changes musically thereafter. Hence the four star rating. Sure, Chuck Berry's "Let It Rock" smokes and every version of "Russian Lullaby" by Jerry has always sounded good, but "Might As Well," "Mission in the Rain" and "I'll take a Melody," (each from the mid 70s "Reflections" cd) depict Jerry striving for a hit single -- something that evaded him in the G/D format throughout the 70s and 80s. Of the last 6 songs on cd one, only one or two are clearly not attempted hit singles ("Knockin' on Heaven's Door" at 7+ minutes with its reggae beat is a highlight and not a potential "hit"). Garcia's third through fifth solo cds were after a hit single, something that he did not appear to be pursuing prior. Thus, here the "studio" cd changes direction mid stream and may not satisfy that "urge to jam out" itch.

CD # 2, the Live cd, is much more consistent and probably the better of the two. The first three songs (one from from Old & In the Way in '73) are very bluegrass; The Beatles' Dear Prudence, at 11+ minutes is a huge highlight with its ska-like beat punctuated by trombone and sax; and Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder they Come" and Dylan's "Senor" are both great.

My copy came with two bonus cds. One is an interview disc with snippets from the first Garcia album and as is the case with every interview cd I've heard before, completely useless. The second bonus cd contains three live tracks and is sub-titled "The tunes that wouldn't fit on the other cds." Of these three live tracks, "That's What Love Will Make You Do" (from 1975) at 11+ minutes is great. This should have appeared on the first cd over some of the less fulfilling studio material, even at the cost of ruining the "Studio/Live" separation of the two basic cds. Robbie Robertson's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" from 1977 is slow, competent, and very, very uninspired (oh look, Jerry's playing with Keith and Donna on this one - say no more!). An acoustic version of Dire Wolf from '84 depicts Jerry's voice in poor shape indeed and at 3+ minutes is uninteresting.

All in all the bonus discs aren't too important if your copy comes sans them. It's cool how this two disc set begins with the studio version of "Deal" and ends on disc 2 with a live "Deal" from 1980 at 9+ minutes. A good purchase, but not great.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits? Like Trying to Hit a Moving Target.......2006-11-29

Compiling something called "The Very Best of Jerry Garcia" must have been a Herculean task, if not a Sisyphean one; how can you possibly cull thousands of hours of recordings down to 140 minutes? It's either heroic, or it's impossible. The answer lies squarely in the middle. This is a nice collection, and very representative of Garcia's solo career, but any true fan would recognize anything called "The Very Best of Jerry Garcia" to be an oxymoron. His solo work was incredibly erratic and uneven, soaring from the unequivocal genius of his first album, "Garcia," but sinking to the confusing morass entitled "Run for the Roses." Strictly speaking, a greatest hits collection would encompass all of the former while (more or less) ignoring the latter, but that is not what a career retrospective disk ought to do, and that is what this really is. To be truly representative, it must gloss over highlights while lingering a bit too long on weaker efforts.
The layout itself is quite intelligent, dedicating one disk to the studio recordings, while dedicating the second to live highlights. The "Garcia" album does have five representative tracks, including the magnificent "Deal," "Bird Song," and "Sugaree," but overlooks "To Lay Me Down" and the totally weird spacey psychedelia of "Late for Supper/Spidergawd/Eep Hour." Meanwhile the thoroughly unremarkable "...Roses" album is represented three times. Garcia's take on "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is an aural sedative, and "Without Love" is a decidedly non-climactic ending to an otherwise satisfying disk.
Fortunately, the live disk compensates nicely. Here, the combination of cover songs and originals compliments Garcia's abilities, and the track selections are more...umm, selective. "Dear Prudence" totally reinvents the Beatles song, and while it may not be an improvement, it at least shows Garcia's penchant for inhabiting his material. "Senor" is a much more inspired song selection than "...Heaven's Door" (as is "Positively 4th Street," marking three Dylan tunes on Garcia's compilation), while "The Harder They Come" is a tried and true take on the reggae classic. Plus, it's always great to hear something from Garcia's traditional folk outfit, Old and In the Way. A better, or more honest, album title for this collection would be "A Brief Synopsis of Garcia's Solo Work." It is a great place to start if you are wondering which part of his career to investigate; either that, or you could pick up his first solo album and take it from there. B+ Tom Ryan

5 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect .......2006-09-27

I'm one of those folks who bought this strictly for CD 2, because I already have everything that's on CD 1. Regarding CD 1, all in all, I have to say they did an "almost perfect" job in the song selection. The "Garcia" album is well represented in that you get the good songs without those scary instrumentals. From "Compliments," I agree with selecting Let It Rock, but I would not have selected Russian Lullaby. I would have selected that mysterious and wonderful song Mississippi Moon or that fantastic song, Turn on the Bright Lights. I think that "Reflections" is well represented. From "Cats Under the Stars," I love the title track of course, but I would not have selected Rubin and Cherise or Rhapsody in Red. The selections from "Run for the Roses" are good selections. All in all, CD 1 is very very good, even with my minor quibbles.
CD 2, the live material, is "better than good." Of the three acoustic tracks that begin CD 2, I like the first track, Catfish John, because it really does capture that "high lonesome sound" a-la Bill Monroe. The Positively 4th Street is very good. The reggae tune The Harder They Come is excellent, mostly because of the bass, they really thump that bass like a fine dub tune. Gamorrah is a very good live version, though I think I prefer the studio version on Cats Under the Stars. Dear Prudence is EXCELLENT. Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) is fantastic, although you probably already have that track on those "Jerry Garcia Band" CDs. The inclusion of Evengeline is unfortunate, in my opinion. So many better tracks than that could have been chosen. The final track, Deal, is very good...it has a sort of mellowness to it that is nice, rather than the harder, rock-out Deals we're used to.
So I would give the whole package 5 stars. Try using CD 1 in your car, it seems to work well that way for me.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars WAR release.......2005-12-06

Let me start by saying this music is great. The Samples are one of the best and most original bands out there. This cd has a lot of good music. Why the 1 star? The musicians who make up the Samples do not get any of the royalties from any of these songs or for this album. The WAR (What Are Records) label owns the rights on the Samples work from 1989 to 1994 (this should explain Heathcliff's complaint about a lack of songs after 1994).

The current incarnation of the band has put out better compilations of their work in Landing on the Sidewalk, Sparta, and Anthology. Go out and buy some of the original more recent Samples including Here and Somewhere Else, and Return to Earth.

3 out of 5 stars Just a "Sampling"........2005-10-10

Sometimes I wonder if there will ever be a perfect collection released for any artist. This does a decent job, but do any casual fans really care about the DVD? And why is this only up to 1994, where's everything since? Also, even from the years presented, where are well known songs like "Everytime", "Who Am I?", and numerous others? Just like the bloated 3-disc collection "Anthology In Motion", this could be better. God knows The Samples deserve a simple 18 track career-spanning "best of", and so do we. Still though, great songs, and their best release since "The Last Drag" album.

4 out of 5 stars Shouldn't have been grouped with punk rock.......2006-08-21

These guys should have been bigger.

They were great musicians. Played in a power trio format, Bruce Foxton's bass was powerful, countered the melodies of the guitar, and was up front in the sound. The guitar playing was right out of early The Who. Paul Weller developed into a real fine musician

And boy, live these guys were the real deal! They rocked!

When punk/new wave died, they were ignored and changed their sound. They should have stayed with their original sound! The Stylel Counsel stunk and even know Weller is worshipped in England, The Jam was his zenith!

4 out of 5 stars Not Enough.......2003-01-25

The band cut too many great tracks to sumarize on a single CD. However, "The Compact Snap" plus "The Jam Collection" do manage to get the best stuff onto TWO CDs; I recommend going that route instead.

5 out of 5 stars "Something's happening here today...".......2001-04-12

The Jam were in the grand tradition of great British singles bands which begins with the holy sixties trinity of Beatles/Who/Kinks and passes on through to the Pretenders, Madness and the Smiths in the 1980s, and on to the likes of Blur. What distinguishes them from the others is that, with the possible exception of Madness, they are by far the most ineradicably English of all those bands. That was a strength and a weakness - it gave them a sense of identity, but it also mired them in that English working class sensibility. The Jam were huge in the UK, had a university level following in places such as New Zealand and Canada, and were unknown anywhere else. Their other flaw was once identified by Who guitarist (and Jam fan) Pete Townshend: the Jam lack a sense of humour. This dourness sometimes makes the band unnecessarily heavy listening. It is possible to deal with heavy themes and maintain a light touch - a lesson the Jam could have learned from all their 1960s-era mentors.

That said, this collection does show the remarkable progress of this band. The opening four tracks, are from the first two albums and show the Jam as, to put it bluntly, a second tier punk outfit. But it was on the Jam's third album, All Mod Cons - released in 1978 and represented here by the Kinks' cover `David Watts', plus `A bomb in Wardour St', and the remarkable `Down in the Tube Station at Midnight' - that the group began to grow. The next couple of years saw the Jam hit its peak - a slew of singles like `Strange Town' and `When You're Young' had some great playing, plus lyrics which catch the alienation of late teens life. "Tears of rage run down your face/But still you say it's fun" sings Weller on `When You're Young.' The pinnacle was `Going Underground', a tight rabbit punch of a single from 1980, and a superb guitar and vocal attack from singer/writer/guitarist Paul Weller.

The band followed that up with the magnificent `Sound Affects' album and from there things started to unravel. That album contained some of Weller's best ever tracks - songs such as `That's Entertainment' which truly synthesised the band's influences and did something new with them. But Weller decided he wanted to be a soul star, and took the band in that direction. Sometimes this worked (even if `A Town Called Malice' sounds like the Supremes) and sometimes it didn't. However the band went out on a high - `Beat Surrender' is a rousing, stomping roar of a single - a fitting end to a band which had the integrity to get out while they were still on top.

5 out of 5 stars Collection of an Era.......1998-07-19

The Jam were never really known outside England, but to the people who knew of them, they meant a hell of a lot to them. This collection (mainly of singles) is a tremendous introduction to Paul Weller and to the band. Each track is another brick in the wall of britpop. Early punk-inspired rockers like "In The City" and "All Around The World" are replaced later on by the accoustic classic "That's Entertainment" and more soulful numbers like the brilliant "The Bitterest Pill". Highly recommended to anyone with a remote interest in British music.
