About the Artist
Amy Denio first made a name for herself as a "serious" composer of contemporary classical music. Then, for almost a decade, she was a member of the Seattle-based Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, an all-female ensemble named after a woman who posed as a man to be able to work in the male-dominated jazz world of the 1930's and '40's. But just as the quartet was gaining a national reputation, Denio quit to pursue a solo career playing her own odd style of folk-rock, in which she plays saxophone, accordion, bass, and a bunch of other instruments. - From the NPR commentary aired January 11th, 1999

Often viewed as the band's last great album, Tattoo You contributed one true classic, "Start Me Up," to the Stones' canon. The song, still used as a concert finale, begins with a fat Keith Richards guitar riff and ends with a leering Mick Jagger murmuring about a woman who could "make a dead man come." The rest isn't as consistent as, say, "Sticky Fingers," but the fast-paced "Hang Fire," the surprisingly non-sexy "Waiting on a Friend," and Richards's "bitch"-filled "Little T&A" make this the Stones' best '80s release by far. Released in 1981, it was the right album at the right time, with strong singles just after MTV began. With typical savvy, the Stones maneuvered gently into the video age. --Steve Knopper

Amazon really needs to consider some alternatives to the five star ratings. It is simply too easy to lump a variety of albums into one category even though they may differ slightly. It's the difference between a B+ and a B- if you will - sorry, it's the teacher in me. I would make this a 6 if it were a 10 point scale, opposed to Dirty Work or Emotional Rescue or Black and Blue being 7s. It's good but not a Stones cd that I play all the time. I play other eighties Stones albums more than this if that gives you any perspective.
What I used to really like about this recording was that, in the vinyl days, one side was rock, the other slower songs. It was kind of cool that you could choose your mood and play the side to fit. Granted, you can do the same now as the pacing is not changed, but I just wanted to point out that geezer factoid. I tend to like the slower side best. There are some really great songs there and Mick is in fine form.
The rocking side has the more familiar numbers including Start Me Up which can make the unique claim of having its opening riff being universally accepted as a sports icon. In sports arenas around the globe, Keef's opening hammer-on chording signals the faithful to get up and cheer the home team. Not many musicians can make that claim - not that they'd want to, either. It is a fast-paced and typical Stones rocking cadre of songs and it won't disappoint even the casual Stones fan. Ronnie's contribution of Black Limousine is the highlight for me. I love the Stones doing the blues.
Many call this the last great album or some such label and I disagree. All Stones albums since the 70s have to be taken at face value - they have some good and some average and even some bad. Yet, it's the Stones and that always makes me happy.

Don't believe the negative reviews. Tattoo You is one of The Rolling Stones' greatest albums! Unlike Some Girls and Emotional Rescue, there's not a trace of disco on this one. Infact, the album could be considered a sequel of sorts to Sticky Fingers. Many of the songs mirror ones from that album. Instead of 'Brown Sugar,' we're given 'Start Me Up,' which was the Stones' best rock single since then. Instead of 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking,' we're given 'Slave,' a jam that also features a superb blend of guitar and saxophone. Indeed, the sax makes its most triumphant return here, courtesy of the great Sonny Rollins and Bobby Keyes. Instead of 'You Gotta Move,' we're given 'Black Limosine,' and so on. Also like Sticky Fingers, Tattoo You features just as many rockers as slow numbers.

To dismiss Tattoo You as simply an album of out-takes is ignorant. It delievers in a way that no other Stones album has been able to since, partly because it is the last one to have that "classic Stones" sound. In addition, it can't be denied that great talent went into the tracks. Tattoo You features no less than 4 amazing gutiarists - Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Wayne Perkins, and Mick Taylor. The book "According to the Rolling Stones" even lists Pete Townshend among the credits. I suspect that he played on 'Worried About You' since the beat is similar to The Who's 'Baba O' Riley', but who knows. Perkins does an awesome guitar solo on 'Worried About You' and Taylor appears on 'Tops' and 'Waiting on a Friend.'

Considering what came after it (Undercover, Dirty Work, Steel Wheels), it's no wonder that Tattoo You is considered the last great Stones album. Voodoo Lounge, while not a complete failure, is littered with filler and Bridges to Babylon has hip-hop overtones in spots. Only until A Bigger Bang did the band finally release an album that was fairly consistent in quality. Tattoo You is definitely worth buying and I also recommend Still Life, a live album from their 1981-1982 tour that serves as the perfect bonus CD to this great album.

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece CD album simply entitled "TATTOO YOU" by THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD, THE ROLLING STONES! This album was originally released on vinyl/LP and cassette in 1981 on the infamous Rolling Stones Records label which is manufactured by Columbia Records/CBS Inc. I purchased the very first release of this album on CD and the matrix or ID number is CK 40502. I also purchased the re-release issue of this album in the Collector's Edition on the Virgin Records label. The matrix or ID number is 7243-8-39502-2-5. If I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible.

In my opinion, "TATTOO YOU" is an another outstanding album and production by The Glimmer Twins! I will list and briefly review all the song tracks in their exact order as follows: (1.) "Start Me Up," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Magnificent! Another great fast rocker by The Stones which is also an anthem in my sports events! What a great way to begin this legendary album! This song, believe it or not, was originally recorded as a Raggae song during the "EMOTIONAL RESCUE" sessions! I love this song dearly very much!) (2.) "Hang Fire," (Outstanding! Another great fast rocker by The Stones! I love this song, its one of my favorites!) (3.) "Slave," (Outstanding! Another great rocker! I love it!) (4.) "little T & A," (Outstanding! Another great fast rocker sung by Keith! I love this song!) (5.) "Black Limousine," (Outstanding! Another great fast rocker! I loved the way The Stones performed this song during their 1981-82 North American Tour. I love this song!) (6.) "Neighbors," (Outstanding! Another great Stones rocker! I love it!) (7.) "Worried About You," (Outstanding! Another great slow Stones song! One of the rarest moments that you will ever hear Mick sing at the falsetto vocal level besides "Miss You!" I love it!) (8.) "Tops," (Outstanding! Another great slow Stones song! I love this song!) (9.) "Heaven," (Outstanding! Another beautifully crafted and arranged slow song sung by Mick using his lead falsetto vocals! I love this song dearly!) (10.) "No Use In Crying" (Another great slow Stones song! I love it!) and (11.) "Waiting On A Friend." (Outstanding! Brilliant! Magnificent! Another great slow rocker by The Stones! I love Mick's lead falsetto vocals! I love this song so much and is so very dear to me! This song is a great way to conclude this album! I love it!) Overall, all of the song tracks in this album are nothing short of outstanding! A brilliant album indeed!

As you can see, this album is definitely worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as part of his or her collection. This album, like many of the other Stones great albums, will be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come. Great album.

In closing, what can I say about The Stones that hasn't already been said? Besides The Beatles, The Stones have contributed and accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll while living the Rock n' Roll lifestyle their way and on their terms which is extremely fast! The Stones are still THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD indeed! Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. The most amazing aspect of this album was that it was a very strong release coming from a band that had been around almost 20 years.

Back in the 1970s with "Some Girls", even that album was considered pretty good for such an old band. "Emotional Rescue" was a misfire and this band was written off for good.

They ROAR into the 1980's with this album that was not only high qulaity for the Stones but the songs were bona fide contemporary radio and MTV staples.

"Start me Up", "Hang Fire" Little T & A" and "Waiting on a friend " are the standouts.

They never came close again. It was all downhill from here.

Out of a really strong catalogue of great Rory albums, I think I'd pick this one as my favorite. And that's coming from someone who adores all his albums up through "Photo Finish" (out of his subsequent albums, I only have "Top Priority" and "Jinx," and although they are really good, I prefer Rory's work before then). Every song stands out on Tattoo, is excellent. "Livin' Like a Trucker" may be my all-time favorite Rory rocker. "Clothesline"'s rhythm ran as an endless loop inside my head as I ran a recent half-marathon; Rory definitely made "great music to run to."

Rory Gallagher was one of the hardest working musicians of his all-too-short time. The fact that he delivered both "Blueprint" and "Tattoo" in 1973, plus touring most of the time, shows he was not one to sit on his laurels or wallow in the trappings of success.

Working with Lou Martin on keyboards, Rod de'Arth on drums, and his long-time bass player, Gerry McAvoy, Mr. Gallagher playing brims with confidence, spirit, and energy throughout.

Once more, he covers the blues-rock terrain, throwing down blistering licks on Tattoo'd Lady and Cradle Rock; dipping into the Delta blues on 20-20 Vision; and working the groove with menacing authority on one of his trademark tunes, A Million Miles Away. The doses of humility and humor that run through Mr. Gallagher's songs help him connect with his audience and remind us that we lost a great one in June 1995.

Pick up the remastered CD if you can: excellent sound, a pair of bonus tracks, and Donal Gallagher's insights are all bonuses.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Rock Blues Guitarists Ever!.......2007-03-28

Having seen Rory Gallagher perform several times in my life, I would have to say that he was the greatest Rock performer I ever saw. When he gave a performance it was with a raw intensity that one seldom see's by any perfomer in a concert. The man literally lived the blues. Unfortunately, for as great a guitarist as he was he is relatively obscure in the era of 60s, 70s, and 80s rock blues musicians. And that is a shame. Although I never saw Jimi Hendrix perform [too young] I am at least lucky in that I was able to see the brilliance of Rory Gallagher's guitar.

I like all of his albums quite frankly. There are those who quibble at some of his albums as not being strong, or focused. Well, I beg to disagree. If you saw him in concert you'd know what I'm talking about. However, for those who have not heard, or listened to much of Rory Gallagher's music, I do highly recommend his live sets. Especially "Irish Tour 74." Now that's a great album. Others complain that his lyrics and vocals are not great. Well, their good enough for me.

The album "Tattoo" is a good place for those of you who would like to delve into Rory Gallagher. Two strong songs on the set, "Tattoo Lady" followed by the more powerful "Cradle Rock" start this albums set off. Although Rory Gallagher is less known than many of his contemporaries, those who love good blues and rock blues in particular, will find that their music collection is not complete without this unheralded master of guitar.

I won't guarantee that you will like Rory Gallagher: I know I sure do, but at least give the man a listen or two. You might find yourself wowed by his style and sizzling guitar work. Sadly, Rory Gallagher died of heart failure in 1995. The last album released in his honor was titled " A Blue Day For The Blues." An appropriate title. I remember running into a friend who had this particular CD, and when he informed me of Rory Gallagher's death, many months before, I was shocked to say the least. I read the newspapers, and I am also very informed about what is going on in the world. And when you hear second-hand that a talented musician such as Rory Gallagher died, and never read it anywhere, well you get the point. He was as unknown in death as he was in life. This album is highly recommended.

rory gallagher the blues/rock musician who vasely under-rated for his guitar playing and vocal ablity's this album has me tapping my foot all the way through and i don't do that on many albums but this album is superb i say that about quite a few album i only do it when there something special and this album is special
on this album you've got blues/hard rock/jazz. a mixture to keep your juices going
20-20 vision is a bloody fantastic song that's catchy as a cold
and the bonus tracks are as you say blues-tastic

This is a good studio album of Rory's from the early 1970's. He is a polished guitar player, and this album allows that skill to shine through. However, if you're not a serious collector, skip it and buy the new double-cd he has out now.

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

As the lead singer of New Grass Revival, über tenor John Cowan always brought an urgency and bold authority to the experimental form his bandmates forged out of bluegrass. So it's no surprise that his versatility carried over to his next ventures, blue-eyed soul and prog-rock, or to his current eponymously named acoustic ensemble, where he's joined by Jeff Autry (guitar), Wayne Benson (mandolin), Shad Cobb (fiddle), and Noam Pikelny (banjo). Their kick-off tune, "Carla's Got a New Tattoo," in which a locomotive rhythm propels Bob Lucas's cheeky lyrics about the cool of body art, recalls the legendary New Grass at their zenith. But the band quickly switches gears to the dark blues of "Misery and Happiness," in which Cowan, powering down his force-of-nature voice to make room for ghostly harmony by Patty Griffin, stunningly evokes the searing pain of redemptive love gone cold. The highlights here are many, and a lot of them bear the stamp of Cowan's friend Darrell Scott, beginning with the spiritual "6 Red Birds (In a Joshua Tree)," which Cowan and Scott wrote together, and segueing to "With a Memory Like Mine," an exquisite song of the crazy-making grief of war (written by Scott and his father, Wayne). But the collaboration that will long stick in the mind is "Drown," a harrowing story song of child molestation. Cowan and Scott (who contributes plaintive piano accompaniment) wrote it together, but it's Cowan's own story of violation, and it's one of the bravest songs of the year. The Songs: "Carla's Got A New Tattoo" opens the set with barn-burning instrumental work and inspired vocal spunk. The soulful "Misery & Happiness," a lamentation on the bittersweet experience of finding love and losing it, features gorgeous harmony vocals from Patty Griffin. "Working In The New Mine" harkens back to old school bluegrass, with a driving tempo, stellar picking, charged modulation, and acrobatic vocal harmonies. A melodic "Back To Your Arms" and Mark Simos' "Hurting Sure" are modern country masterpieces that would sound right at home on country radio. "In Bristol Town" is a ballad with some old-time Appalachian character. The 6-minute closing track, "Drown," is the most emotional and controversial. It's a disturbing and detailed disclosure about child molestation. Based on personal experience as a seven-year-old survivor, John felt it was a tragic story that needed to be told. Cowan collaborated with Darrell Scott on "Drown" and "Red Birds (In A Joshua Tree)." Darrel and his father (Wayne) penned "With A Memory Like Mine," a sad song of a son returning frm war in a flag-draped casket.

The Musicians: Besides Cow on lead vocals and bass, the band's current lineup is Jeff Autry (guitar, bouzouki), Wayne Benson, (mandolin), Shad Cobb (fiddle), Noam Pikelny (banjo), and Luke Bulla (fiddle, mandolin). All but Pikelny contribute harmony vocals.

Of Special Note: Six guests who are "special" offer up vocals (Patty Griffin), piano (Darrell Scott), cello (Bryn Bright), bass harmonica (Mickey Raphael), percussion (Giles Reaves), and "sonic onslaught" (Jay Joyce).

Any Recommendations: The studio effects are a little overstated in a few places. Sound effects, echo, reverb and looping sounds have their place, and producer Jay Joyce could've used them a bit more sparingly to create certain intimate moods and soul-stirring settings.

I like the return to a little more acoustic sound than on the previous John Cowan CD "Always Take Me Back." That one had some superb novelties, like the Yes and King Crimson covers, but it lacked cohesion, and the original songs were not as good as on John's debut. This one is closer to the New Grass Revival vibe with strong songs throughout and some expert instrumental passages, too. John's cover of The Blue Nile (Tomorrow Morning) is a wonderful choice, and it sheds light on the underrated songwriting of Paul Buchanan. With Sam Bush's recent album "Laps In Seven" also sounding great, these are good times for New Grass Revival fans.

First and foremost, John Cowan's resonating tenor voice would send shock waves through a polar ice cap. The hair on my arms stood up the entire concert. The way the album is mastered, it's one long continuous medley that's over far too quickly. The arrangements are laid out in an order that flows like a river. John mixes styles on this recording that range from blues to southern rock to Celtic soul in a most indelible piece of work. Cow band rocks on this, especially fiddler Shad Cob and mandolinist Wayne Benson. Didn't think it was possible for JC to improve, but he continues to outpace himself. One for the collector's list and posterity. Tattoo transfer was a really cool bonus!

Best work by Cowan yet. No let down from start to finish though the last song "Drown", which deals with the reality of child molestation, seems out of place for this particular album. Regardless, it's an excellent mix and masterful production. Certain enjoyment for any newgrass fan.

Bought it 2 weeks ago on release date and have been listening to it every day since. Still not tired of it. The music is a large heaping dollop of bluegrass (excuse me New Grass)a dash of country with a pinch of southern rock, a bit of gospel, and a little mountain music tossed in, served up with a serious jolt of reality (referencing last cut "Drown").This group is in unison with one another and this Cd reflects their individual awsome talents especially John Cowans incredible vocals. That man can belt a tune in any category from rock to country and everything in between.

Honestly this is the third worst release from the Crue - after Generation Swine and Theatre of Pain. But there are some tracks that are decent such as White Punks on Dope (cover song go figure), Fake and New Tattoo are decent catchy Crue tracks. Castillo does an adequate job (God rest his soul) and Mars is his typical high standard guitar playing. Sixx on the other hand f'd up the lyrics throughout this release. Neil - well he sounds good and that is about it.

Motley Crue, arguably the biggest pop-metal band of the 1980s, had a tough time in the 1990s. First there was the falling out and ensuing feud between vocalist Vince Neil and the rest of the band. Then there were the alternative and grunge moments that made the Crue's style of music passé. The Crue responded to the public's change in taste by releasing the grunge-sounding "Motley Crue" (1994) album with vocalist John Corabi that was a huge bomb. Then, despite Neil's return to the band, there was another flop with the faux industrial/alt.rock-esque "Generation Swine" (1997). All the while internal problems persisted. Unable to get along, drummer Tommy Lee and Neil almost killed each other at an Airport in the late 90s. Frustrated with both Neil and the band's audience for not liking the Crue's attempts to modernize, Lee quit the group in the summer of '99 to form the Nu-Metal outfit Methods of Mayhem. The final blow came when the Crue left their record label Electra, although they did receive the complete rights to their master-tapes, so they could re-release and repackage their back-catalogue as they saw fit.

Despite a decade that didn't treat them too kindly, at the dawn of the new millennium, the Crue soldiered on. The first task at hand was finding a new drummer. Randy Castillo, formally of Ozzy Osbourne's band, was tapped to replace Tommy Lee. With a new drummer, a new label, and a fresh perspective, Nikki Sixx, (bass) Mick Mars, (guitar) Vince Neil, (vocals) and Randy Castillo (drums) went into the studio in the spring of 2000 to record their eighth studio album.

For Motley Crue's self-titled album and "Generation Swine," the band tried to modernize. While some fans appreciated the Crue's more modern, updated sound (I personally feel that the self-titled album is the Crue's finest work) the public didn't bite. Fans of old-school 80s rock hated anything that wasn't about T and A, and why would a younger audience want to listen to an 80s rock band try to sound like music of their generation?

For their new album, the Crue decided to return to their roots and make an old-school, 80s sunset-strip, pop-metal album. In order to make an 80s style album, Guns N' Roses producer Mike Clint was brought on board. Assisting main songwriter and Crue leader Nikki Sixx in writing the songs was the unknown James Michael. After a few months in the studio, the Crue unleashed "New Tattoo" in the summer of 2000.

Fans are mixed on "New Tattoo." Some feel that it's the band's best work since "Dr. Feelgood" and a return to the sound of classic Crue after years of trend-hopping. Others, however, feel that it's a half-baked attempt to go back in time, or rehash a style where the well of creativity has long since run dry. To be sure, "New Tattoo" definitely sounds like old-school Crue. It actually sounds as though it could have come out around 1988, between "Girls, Girls, Girls" (1987) and "Dr. Feelgood" (1989).

While I don't love this album, I like it a lot. It has a lot going for it. For one thing, the band sounds great. "Theatre of Pain" (1985) and "Girls, Girls, Girls" may have had well-written songs, but the band was so smacked out of its mind on coke, heroin and booze, the quality of the music suffered. On "New Tattoo," the music is done in a similar pop-metal vein (melodic with a sing along chorus) only now the band sounds focused, and the performance is top-notch. Vince Neil gives the best vocal performance of his career with the title-track and sounds great throughout the entire album. Mick Mars's playing is also great, as his soloing has never sounded better and is pure ear candy. Similarly, Sixx and Castillo offer a solid rhythm section, thus making the band sound tight from start to finish.

"New Tattoo" is not as complex or ambitious as "Motley Crue" or "Generation Swine." It's a back-to-basics type of album, which is fine, as the album is generally very well written. There are a couple of weak songs, like the okay-but-not-great opening (and first single) "Hell on High Heals," and "Punched in the Teeth by Love," which sound like clichéd, by-the-numbers hair-metal. The rest of the album, however, is quite strong. The songs are generally fast-paced hard-rockers, that have good hooks and strong melodies that should definitely please fans of the pop-metal genre. The obligatory ballads, "New Tattoo," and "Hollywood Ending" are far less generic than most of its type, and show maturity, without loosing its edge.

The album's biggest flaw, however, are the lyrics. The Crue's lyrics (especially "Theatre of Pain" thought "Dr. Feelgood") have always been somewhat cheesy, but they're especially bad here, as titles such as "Treat Me like the Dog that I am" and "She Needs Rock N' Roll" would suggest. And while the Crue's lyrics in the past were somewhat cheesy, they were still edgy, and the Crue's members were young, and it was in the 80s, so the band gets a pass for past offensives. But in 2000, a middle-aged Crue has no excuse and the band just sounds goofy. Still, the cheesy lyrics don't ruin the album, as the band's top-notch performance and mostly solid collection of songs are more than enough to make this a strong release.

If you are a fan of Motley Crue or 80s-style hard-rock in general, you will probably get something out of this album. Despite a few bad songs and poor lyrical content, it's still a solid album. On a sad note, Randy Castillo succumbed to cancer and died a few years after the release of "New Tattoo."




4 out of 5 stars QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT IT...ITS THE CRUE!!!!!.......2005-08-05

I don't see why every one is bashing New Tattoo! People complained about Crue '94 and Generation Swine because it was too much of a departure from the Shout, Girls and Feelgood style. Everybody bitched, everybody pissed and everybody moaned . So...Nikki and the boyz decide to release a good 'ol fashioned Crue album to satisfy all these "hair rockers" that are now Losing their hair or aging very ungracefully by the time of it's release. What they gave us is a Motley Crue record. In the same style of those mentioned previously. It has all all the trimmin's!!!! Arena anthems, ballads and just plain ol raunch and roll. For this recording, Tommy Lee stepped aside to focus on Methods of Meyhem (another EXCELLENT attempt for what it is...) and former Ozzy drummer Randy Castillo joined the Crue, pounding away like clockwork. Songs like hell on High Heels, Treat Me Like the Dog I Am, New Tattoo, Punched In The Teeth By Love are perfect Motley Crue songs. Catchy, sleezy, melodic Crue songs to suit the taste buds of any Crue fan. See, what happened is this album came out as metal changed. Gone were the 80's style metal that we all know and love dearly. I am a fan of each and all genres of all eras, and New Tattoo gets a 4 out of 5 for me. Why not 5? Well, while it's a decent release, it's not a very stong one. The 4 is for the good tunes and for an EXCELLENT cover of the Tubes', White Punks On Dope! The other thing that makes this a very strong 4 is the sound quality! A crystal clear engineering job well done...if only the first 4 could have been recorded like this...! To Mr. Randy Castillo, thanks for giving us one more round of skin pounding before making you way to rock and roll Heaven. R.I.P brother...we'll NEVER forget you!

NEW TATTOO(2000).Motley Crue's eigth(studio)album.

By the year 2000,Motley Crue had seen and done it all. They had accidently killed their best friends in car accidents,they had beatun up their wifes and gotten arrested and charged with spousal abuse--you name it,and there is a good chance that either Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,Tommy Lee,and/or Mick Mars had done it. And a year before the twenty-first century arrived,The Crue released a new studio album in the summer of 2000. How did the album meausure up? Read on for my review of this:

This album,along with THEATRE OF PAIN,MC '94,and GENERATION SWINE,is a "love it or hate it" album. I'd also say that it is easily the worst album Motley Crue has EVER released. And while Nikki Sixx usually contributes most of the work to Motley Crue albums,the Crue member who probably did most of the work here is drummer Randy Castillo(RIP)who had been hired as Motley Crue's replacement drummer after Tommy Lee had quit the band to do his Methods of Mayhem project. Castillo was a good drummer(he died from complications of cancer in 2002)and when a replacement member of a band deserves the most credit for the first album the band that hired him for and had recorded with him,you know that's not a good sign.The only good tracks on here(whether or not I like the title track depends on the mood I am in while listening to it)are the opener HELL ON HIGH HEELS,FAKE,and their cover of The Tubes' WHITE PUNKS ON DOPE(it is one of their best cover songs)--everything else here is just really bad. And while the lyrics are quite stupid also,how many agree with me that the dialogue on TREAT ME LIKE THE DOG I AM and PORNO STAR is annoying? Apart from the good songs on this CD,the songs here just sound unispired and are all quite stupid-I wouldn't say that Motley Crue was exactly returning to their original sound on this album. Them returning to their original sound shows at times during this record,but with this CD,after listening to it,it may seem a little apparent that Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,and Mick Mars wanted half of this album to sound like their original material(DR. FEELGOOD,GIRLS,GIRLS,GIRLS,etc.)while they wanted half of it to sound like the kind of rock music that was popular back in 2000-they didn't want us to think that,but guess what--we caught what they were hoping we wouldn't be able to tell after their fans had listened to this record.

Overall,a dreadful CD that could have been and should have been totally better--Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,and Mick Mars should have put more effort into this CD then they really did. And here is the bottom line:get their new two disc greatest hits set RED,WHITE,AND CRUE--that way,you will get HELL ON HIGH HEELS and the single version of the title track off of this album,and then download the other two good tracks on this album(the tracks that I mentioned at the top of this review,and the bonus tracks here--if you want them)and then skip the rest. Now that Tommy Lee is back with the band,hopefully Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,and Mick Mars will make a new,decent studio album that WILL sound more like DR. FEELGOOD,GIRLS,GIRLS,GIRLS,etc.(I always found MC '94 to be underappreciated--I liked GENERATION SWINE,but I can see why some(or most)Crue fans don't care for it). Enough said--although I am looking forward for seeing The Crue in concert one month from now).

If you like old motley crue you will like this one. It is super catchy, nice guiter parts, and just a feel great rock record, that doesn't try to make some big social comment or take itself too seriously. It just goes out and rocks.

Probably the first thing you should know about the Tatts is that the singer goes by the name "Angry" Anderson, and I gotta say the name fits. In an era when practically every band in the world tries as hard as they can to be "tough" and "bad," these guys are the genuine article. Musically, this is basic rock and roll, played hard and fast with Pete Wells'greasy slide guitar providing the leads. This was their first album but to my mind they never improved on it.

While Rose Tattoo plays blues based hard rock like Bon Scott AC-DC, the comparison ends there as far as I'm concerned. This is a mixture of hard rock, punk, and American Southern rock. It's fast. It's hard. And then there's that slide guitar so prevelant in blues and southern rock. Angry Anderson is a true poet. His lyrics create mental pictures as all great poets do. The Butcher and Fast Eddie is an epic poem about a battle between warriors, much as the epic Celtic, Scandanavian and Saxon epics. This is a true story brought to life through vivid word images. Just because a band plays hard driving gut level rock'n'roll, it doesn't mean they aren't highly intelligent creative people. To me. Rose Tattoo has always been way underrated, even by some of their fans. I find them superior to AC-DC on many levels (and I love the stuff w/ Bon Scott). Nice Boys Don't Play Rock'n'Roll (which was butchered by Guns'n'Roses) is another jammin' song with very vivid lyrical images. I think the whole album is a work of art, overlooked by overeducated snobs, because of the punk inflected hard rock style. Their other discs are more than worth your time, too. Sure, band members start drifting away over the years, but Anderson always has something worthwhile to say, and a good band to back him up. Angry Anderson is the voice of the working man, the man in the street, the underdog who get's f#$%*ed over by government and the system. On the most basic level, this is good rock'n'roll, but there's something far deeper going on for those who are interested.

Comparison to AC/DC is--in my book--the highest praise a band can get, so I got curious. In some ways, Rose Tattoo will remind you of AC/DC more than any other band will. But don't look for another AC/DC, or even a band that could do a worthy tribute. "Angry" (for lead vocalist, "Angry" Anderson) is, in fact, an upfront confession. This truly is unadulterated yelling, with no technique or recognizable style to help make it work. The drummer makes a nice contribution on this album, but then the way over-used slide guitar starts sounding like just a cover up for the lack of real, no frills six-string talent. "Rock and Roll Outlaw" is the most memorable track, and the AC/DC influence shines through. "The Butcher and Fast Eddy" will call to mind the AC/DC great, "Live Wire", while "Bad Boy For Love" gives you "She's Got Balls" shamelessly recycled with a lyrics transfusion. "Nice Boys", with it's quick beat and yelling, like a lot of tracks that follow, sounds something like a punk spin on an AC/DC-inspired sound. The slide guitar yell-ballad "Stuck On You" will drive home the point that some bands add ballads because they think it's part of "The Formula". Things begin to wrap up on an up note with a sizzling intro to "Astra Wally".

Just because you can play an instrument and sing does not mean you should make an album or assume that you are in league with "classic rockers" such as Zep or Bad Company,even. Sheesh these guys are dreadful. Save your money. Go to a local club in your town, have a few pops, listen to a live band with dreams of hitting it big. You sure as hell don't need this. The rest of you reviewers please stop cheapening the 4 or 5 star ratings; if you don't know this is a dog stop review all together.

    Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.

    Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

    I like lots of Christian music that nobody has ever heard of, but Massivivid has to be my favorite. This first album, Brightblur, has it all. They lyrics are outstanding. They're not watered down, they say what needs to be said. Musically, this album is amazing. The first songs get crammed in your head until you forget everything else exists. This first set of songs climaxes with an emotionaly ravenging tune called Epitome, moves on through to the tongue-twisting Crop Circles then segways out to the next set with the odd, screaming Deep Heaven. Now we have arrived at tracks 10, 11 and 12 and it is just unbelievable the way the three songs build and build and build. They are the pinnacle of rock ballads; mellow yet startling. I cannot even describe the emotion and physical compulsion these songs bring. From there, it lightens up and finishes off with a couple remixes and even some down right hilarious studio blurbs.

    This is a MUST buy for any music lover; Christian or otherwise.

    Absolutely LOVE this album! I only wish they did more stuff! If you ever need to know what real music sounds like, just pop this CD in - a true classic, to be sure! Get it while it's still available!

    This is one of the best Christian albums that i have ever listened to, and own. It addresses the realities of life while not super-spiritulizing. I recomend this to everyone, even if you don't like alternative or rock, it's worth buying, just for the lyrics.

    I am a young Christian who loves heavy music, from punk to rap to techno. Being a lover of Christ isn't just gospel and praise music, it's also in-your-face! This is my favorite cd. It's worn out and I need a new one.

    This band rocks the house. Though one may be tempted to think that this is a NIN wanna be group, that isn't true. After listening to NIN for years, I can say that this band has similarities, but it is much different in it's "feel" and especially in their lyrics. While Trent continues his "downward spiral into hell", these guys are rockin' into a more hopeful glympse of truth and reality of knowing and living for G-d, as opposed to hatred of G-d and perversion of reality in a twisted state of self-worship. Overall I'm sick of hearing Reznor's whining... we all have pain, and I sympathize, but Reznor enjoys the pain so he can whine about it and make $$$ off it. But do I need to say anything else about NIN... I'll listen to my Massivivid CD instead, thank you.
