This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Bought this on vinyl in 87 or 88 and I'm not one of those people who listens to old music. But I like this as much as when I first bought it way back when. It's really too bad these guys never found an audience. What a great band. Have the first CD, Script of the Bridge, which I also like very much but Strange Times is just a masterpiece. Not a bad cut on the whole thing. Amazing.

I first heard the Chameleons in the early 80's and was hooked. As a College freshman, Strange Times took longer to grow on me than earlier releases, but once it did those roots never let go. This isn't just a collection of songs but a journey. I feel like I've been through and experience after listening to the album. Now in my 40s, I still listen to this album more than almost any other. I would put this work up against other all-time bests such as Clash - London Calling, REM - Murmur, Radiohead - the Bends, and Nirvana - Nevermind as highest impact recordings. Put on a set of headphones and listen in a darkened room. Enjoy it.

After their two previous releases, we knew the chameleons could easily astonish everybody with their new,raw, intense and beautiful music;that does not change here, but good news was that they could actually rock.Once drummer John Lever turns on the powerhouse and the cranked up bass joins, you know that you won`t be able to remain seated while listening to the cd.The guitars use unusual tunings,adding further beauty and exotic brilliance.
But above all of this there`s master songwriting , allowing you to discover something new after repeated listenings.At times the album is a bit dark,recalling past times to be much better than today,but truth doesn`t hurt..lol...
Song Swamp Thing can be familiar to you and if not, download it because it will be stick in your head forever.My favourites also include the terrific drummin` "Soul in Isolation ",nice chord progression " In Answer" and upbeat tempo " Seriocity".
If you get this one , together with Script of the Bridge,you will notice how good and timeless 80`s music can be.Do yourself a favour and get both.

Album Description

Augie March is a band whose very name was poached from perhaps THE great American novel, to give the people of America an inkling of the underside of Australia. In 2002, the band had set up camp in a disused telephone company building in outer Melbourne to write the album that would become Strange Bird. It covers a lot of sonic terrain, veering from the sweet, building harmony of The Vineyard, through the Wild West gallop of This Train, the heavy Song in the Key of Chance and muted melancholy of O Mi Sol Mi Lon to the plaintive balladry of The Night is A Blackbird, and that's all in the first twenty minutes. It was released in Australia in October 2002 and did great things. A few insightful American music journalists from Rolling Stone to The Big Takeover to the All Music Guide have caught wind of the release and have already signed on as their champions.The rest of the world is about to catch up. The US release of Strange Bird contains the award winning videos for "The Vineyard" and "Little Wonder."

A year and half since I first bought it and still discovering how good this album is. The depth and richness of both the lyrics and music are simply unparalleled by any contemporary band I've heard. The new album is finally out....living in the States, I'll have to wait a little while for it to arrive. So for the past few weeks I've been listening to this one a lot, and developing a newer, deeper appreciation.
I heard the last 30 seconds or so of "Train" on the radio while flipping through the stations. Made it a point to stay on the station after it was over, to get the band's name. Oggie Mark, or something. Made a mental note to not forget it-the song was too cool and I had to hear the whole thing. Haven't heard them on U.S. radio more than twice since. Went home, went on amazon, typed up the name and- ah- Augie March, from a Saul Bellows novel. Underground Australian band. Read the reviews for this album and figured it was worth the $14.00 or so. Haven't looked back since.
I think the crown jewel of Augie's music is definitely the lyrics. Glen Richards' love of-and mastery of- language is apparent throughout the album. I would go so far as to say, if there was such a thing as virtuoso lyricism, this is it. Glen uses grammar, vocabulary, rhyme, etc., to bend and polish the lines of each song into uncommonly vivid and breathtaking imagery. Every word is necessary, carefully chosen; each song has it's own logic, it's own resolution. I'm no expert on poetry, but a while ago it became a sort of high compliment to call rock musicians "poets"- from Dylan & Morrison to Eminem & Tupac. Well sir, this is poetry. It borders on affectation- lots of "O'"s and "a'"s- and sometimes crosses the line- "Brundisium" (awesome song, but some of the lyrics don't quite do it for me) and particulary "O Song" (I just think songs about songwriting are the height or pretense)- I feel are examples of that. And I'll be honest- I will probably never know what some songs are about ("There's something at the bottom of the Black Pool"- cool imagery, no idea what he's talking about). From what I've gathered Glen is very well read and a lot of these lyrics allude to the works of authors like T.S. Elliot. Again, that might be a wee bit pretenious.
But this is ok; because as high-fallutin' as the lyrics are, what gives them weight is the incredible music. Effortlessly diverse- from jazz to folk to heavy-retro-psychedelic-whatever. Never sounds forced or contrived, and utterly devoid of cliche or filler. I hear Pink Floyd mainly, also The Beatles, maybe a little Radiohead. Like all great pop music, it's when the lyrics and music intertwine and feed off of each other that the best results are achieved. And the results are sublime....I feel the best tracks on the album are "Train" and "Little Wonder". "Train" is just the best song of this century (that I've heard) and on track to be one of my favorite songs ever. Absolutely timeless. And "Little Wonder"- well the last verse of that song.... with the terribly sad, almost disturbingly vivid lyrics juxtaposed with the bittersweet lullaby-like melody...well, you just have to hear it. Other standout tracks include "The Vineyard", "O Mi So Li Lon/Song in the Key...", and especially "The Drowning Dream" (although again- no clue on the lyrics, except that there are very dreamy). I dig the heavier and psychedelic stuff the most.
So why almost only 4 stars, after all this gushing? Like most albums today, it's too long. A record with 8 great songs is superior to one with 8 great and 4 mediocre! There are a couple songs I wouldn't miss if they weren't included. And there are flow problems....The lilting "Little Wonder" works great after the manic ride of "Train"- but then you have another, even slower song in "The Night is a Blackbird". Beautiful song, but a bit of a pill. And the middle of the album kind of drags with several mid-tempo, jazzy songs in a row. Good songs- I love "The Keepa"- but one after the other like that-kind of a drag.
But in spite of this, I have to give it 5 stars. The other day I was listening to "Addle Brains"- an ok song- and the lyrics just clicked- it's about a homeless man and apathy. Now I have a whole new appreciation for the song. That is what I mean about the depth of this album....over a year later and I'm still discovering it. It's not like I've been listening to it straight for a year and half, but every few months I get the urge and dive right in. That is worth 5 stars. If you can't tell, I highly recommend it....a unique and beautiful experience awaits you. No matter what music you're into (I'm an 80's Metal/Classic Rock guy!). Get it! Now!

This one is a little disappointing after the band's first album, Sunset Studies. Their debut album was dreamy and beautiful, whereas Strange Bird is a bit more abrasive. Songs like "The Drowning Dream" harken back to the first album but a stark contrast can be heard in songs like "Song in the Key of Chance". Glen's lyrics are still in fine form, but the delivery of the songs has changed. Sunset Studies was like snuggling under the covers on a winter's night. Strange Bird is... well, it's hard to say. Being up too early the next morning, perhaps. Pretty, with a frost on the ground... Shiny, glinting, polished. Definitely more polished. And the songs are much more diverse. Where Sunset Studies was held together by a definite mood, Strange Bird veers all over the place. Jazzy upbeat songs like "Keepa" nestle between slower, plodding songs like "The Night is a Blackbird". My favourite songs are those melodic, dynamic songs at the end of the album, namely "Drowning Dream", "Sunstroke House", and "Brundisium". Also a standout is the rollicking "This Train is Taking No Passengers".

Overall, second to Sunset Studies, but still highly recommended.

What. An. Album. What. A. Band.

Seriously, if you haven't heard of this band, go out and by both of their albums now. Go on, I'll wait for you. They are probably one of the greatest bands in the world at the moment. And their new album comes out this year. Yippee!

I'm not quite sure how to describe this music. Indie-folk-pop, perhaps? Well, it's an extremely diverse album. One second you are listening to the chamber pop of The vineyard, the next song This train will be taking no passengers sounds like a lost Pogues number. Glenn Richards (the lead singer and songwriter) has a real way with words. He scatters literary references throughout his songs. His songs are gems of melodic beauty, complex without losing sight of what makes a song enjoyable -- a great tune.

Album of the year no doubt.

The path taken includes ISB, Love, Mike Oldfield, Modest Mouse, Wilco, Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire....If any of those appeal to you, give this CD a try. I sound rather objective, but my spirits are so elegantly lifted by oh, such a magnificent band of individuals. The music is clearly heavenly, craftly blending voice and instruments for an amazing journey into gorgeous dramatic music. These guys are for real. I treasure this music.

Chameleons are one of those bands that toiled in obscurity creating a singular sound that other bands would water down and find success with.

They were influenced by the usual suspects themselves (Joy Division, Siouxsie etc.), but brought an epic scope and progressive sophistication to their chosen style.

This album has a depth that rewards many listens and can usually be found in the bargain rack. Give it a try.

With some of the most beautiful abstract cover art gracing their album covers, the Chameleons UK are almost obliged to guarantee an album that's nothing short of breathtaking. After just purchasing this album at a steal (less than $8!!) and giving it a good listen, I can truly say that this album does not dissapoint. I must admit, Im in a Britpop phase, trying to revisit the great sounds I couldn't appreciate in my childhood. And, starting to tire of the neo-New Wave movement of the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, etc., I've begun exploring the roots. Bullseye with this one: it's one of the more memorable 80's albums; melodic, introspective, ethereal-sounding, cinematic, abstract.....

Yes folks, KoD succeeded where many bands haven't: they made a second album that was just as good as their first amazing debut!

Yeah, it has the same powerful vocals, guitar and rhythms as their first. Not to mention it has another killer title (the latter two albums do as well)- that always helps!

This was the first KoD album I heard but "Death of Cool" is my favourite. You can never get enough of the ethereal genius that KoD creates.

This is a great start in the KoD world. Fans of KoD, should own this as well as the other three albums. Oh and the EPs, singles, compilations...

i heard the song "pda" by interpol a couple of years back and it brought me back to this disk. such an amazing sound. this was their best cd and is some of the best of the late eighties and early nineties. they recorded this disc at a little island studio and it's as if they somehow transferred the vacation attitude into the music. it's difficult to explain it except to say the songs on this disc build an incrediclby wonderful mood and just seem to flow one to the next. it's like the best of the Catherine Wheel and the best Lush mixed together - great guitar, atomospheric and solid song writing. a totally enjoyable musical experience that stands the test of time.

Geez, it's been over a decade and a half since I purchased this cd! How the time flys by. And with the passing of time I keep returning to "Strange Free World", an album that ages like the finest of wines.

I loved Ride's "Nowhere", Catherine Wheel's "Ferment", MBV's "Loveless", Slowdive's "Just for a Day", and Lush's "Deluxe", but "Strange Free World" by Kitchens of Distinction stands out among the best of the shoegaze set, and is the sadly unedrappreciated leader of the pack, the alpha chief star destroyer, if such a thing exists. Produced by Hugh Jones (some Echo and the Bunnymen), this second K.O.D. release from the year 1991 is gold from beginning to end. Unfortunately, this was a time when all of this great music from the UK was being overshadowed by a dumb stateside genre of music called grunge. Blech. Now, kids are discovering this stuff once again, but still not enough in my opinion. While most of the groups I mentioned earlier were great, their voices tended to get lost in the layers of guitars and effects and the lyrics at times were a bit vague and abstract, which is fine. However, it's refreshing to hear an album that is just as sonically engaging, if not better sounding than the others ("shoegazey" if you will) yet with honest, cohesive, clear lyrics and excellent vocalls pitifully copied by the likes of the vastly overrated Interpol (God, and those annoying clothes and haircuts--come on people!!!). Again, while the atmospheric, shoegaze aspect of the music is very appealing to me, it's those timeless lyrics that bring it home again and again. And, these guys can raise the tempo and rock like none other. Songs like "Gorgeous Love" and "Drive that Fast" are just a couple of the highlights on this unsung classic released during a very exciting time in current music history,and still sound brand new today.

I remember hearing Drive that Fast and thinking, got to get this. Then I heard the whole album and listened to it regularly for years. Recently, my brother bought me an album by a band called Interpol. Damn if this is not the same vocalist, or a darn good admirer. So what did I do? pulled KOD cd's out and listened all over again! How good is this album? When my wife and I went back to Hawaii for our 5th (5 years ago)anniversary, this was one of my 12 cds to come with (I have over 800 cds). Why are they gone! Come back! Please more of this!

I can't believe it's been 13 years since I first heard this CD. Funny thing is I listened for 3 or 4 years before I actually listened to the lyrics too.

Another KOD reviewer on Amazon had problem with some of the gay-themed lyrics. If you can't get over that, then frankly you don't deserve to hear it. The guitar effects will put you in a trance, and the songs flow together seamlessly. One of the reasons KOD didn't have mainstream success is their songs are some heavy duty songs about LOVE, both gutwrentching, and glorious.

One of the top 10 CD's that changed my life.

Just buy it.

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

      1994. What a year that was. I remember vividly hearing this cd come raging like a storm onto the club PA system on a cold, rainy, Autumn night. I had to ask the DJ who on earth this was. Reverent vocal strains of hints of Peter Murphy with a guitar sound like no other, raining down from the heavens to bathe us in it's all encompassing glow. I begged the DJ to play more of this cd that night and went home convinced this was a revelation in sound.

      I occasionally put this cd on when I want a glimpse of what the indie scene used to be and when bands really knew how to play their instruments with their hearts and captured you, forever, with their minds...

      As Brocade begins you are immediately greeted with a repetitious krautrock line reminiscent of both Neu! and Can. From the immediacy of that sweeping hook, they take themselves into sounds that begin to start moving through the sky. Like an instrumental early 4AD record you always imagined in your head. Their ability to slow down and change time creates a space where you can wander with intensity. They let you look at that one thing for so long and with so much devotion you begin to start seeing the bigger picture just by the magnification of one sound, one idea, one deep focus. Landing want to see how close they can get to the sky -- they feel wind shake them -- sun blast them -- air refresh them. Highly recommended!

      Certain types of music have long had general associations attached to them. Back when I was in college, my roommate and I were both really into electronic music (we both started getting listening around the early heydays of Warp Records and Plus 8), and on more than on occasion, when someone entered our room (which were admittedly usually decorated in strange ways as well), they would say, "you guys must do a lot of drugs" (oddly enough, neither of us did). For awhile, these responses amused us, but at a certain point they became a bit annoying as well.

      I suppose the above statement is a bit of a roundabout way of wondering whether certain bands ever get annoyed with being coupled with certain associations (such as taking drugs), and the space rock genre in general (including Landing) have certainly gotten mixed into this category. Heck, you could go back to Pink Floyd and even further if you want to talk about bands where people have said that taking drugs not only helps in the enjoyment of the music, but is needed.

      Anyway, on to Brocade, which is the seventh full-length release from Landing in seven years. After a couple albums on K Records, the prolific group (they've also released a couple EPs in that time period) finds themselves returning to the Strange Attractors label with their newest release, which finds founding member Dick Baldwin replaced by friend and tour mate Peter Baumann. The result is another tripped-out batch of five songs that run nearly an hour in length.

      Recorded mostly live in the studio with a couple overdubs, Brocade has a warm feel that adds the the effect of the music quite nicely. Opener "Loft" locks into an almost krauty groove right from the start and the group layers short guitar arpeggios and some gurgles of synth into a tightly-wound jame while "Yon" mixes some female vocals into a dense, swirling fog of e-bowed guitar and synth washes. "Spiral Arms" mixes multiple guitar parts (some more e-bow, some strummed melodies) along with windswept synths and chimes that all sort of blend together into an appealing, if somewhat unfocused whole.

      If the previous track was unfocused, then the growling, overdriven "How To Be Clean" is easily the most straightforward, with just over four minutes of fairly generic, fuzzy rock that pretty much dissolves into complete mud by the end. On the seventeen minute closer "Music For Three Synthesizers," it's back off into space-out land, with a track that's exactly as the title states. The sparse track brings to mind the sparse ambient work of Brian Eno, but mimics almost the exact feel of "Cliffs" by Aphex Twin (from Selected Ambient Works Volume 2) with similar structure and melody but different sounds. If you like Landing, you're probably not going to go wrong with Brocade, but there are other releases I still much prefer in this genre (Yume Bitsu still gets my vote as one of the best ever).
