About the Artist
Snoozer came together in the fall of 1999. Paul Alves, guitarist of many years experience on the NYC scene, from North American Drum and Steel to hard rock act Drill, called Mats Nordman up. Mats, whose long career as a drummer spans from touring with numerous blues and rock acts to being a founding member of Purge, where all ears when Paul wanted to get together and jam. With fresh minds, a lot of experience what to do and NOT do in a band, they both trotted down to a local rehearsal studio in their part of the world, New York's lower east side. Already knowing and liking each other, it was more of a melding of philosophies about what they wanted to do and how to do it. Musically "the shit was already there"
Now they only needed one more culprit. Paul knew this guy whose band he'd recorded a few years back. Enter Marvin Freitas, who had been around the Newark scene for years, in bands like Gosh and Treble.Snoozer was formed! A diverse group of artist, from Miles Davis and Marvin Gaye, to Tommy Bolin and Jimi Hendrix, all the way to Nirvana, Metallica and Fugazi influence Snoozer's music. And the band members' varied origins add to the mix. Paul's family is Portuguese, Marvin's roots are Spanish and Mats is from Sweden. After a few months of rehearsal Snoozer went into the studio and recorded 4 songs for their first release. Snoozer's record was released on Messin With Records in September 2000.

Thought it was a great crate find, but..........2004-10-06
Beck's diverse, anything-goes approach is, in my opinion, his most positive quality. His closest fans are likely to accept wild stylistic swings in album context. We are also likely to find joke songs charming or, at worst, good for a laugh.
When I found this import (hard to find) maxisingle at a record shop, I was thrilled. I purchased it and prepared for greatness. After all, Beck's singles are fertile ground for lost would-be album cuts and other great B-sides. And his "Mellow Gold"-era singles are no exception. The "Loser" maxisingle is loaded with great stuff. "Beercan" has some gems as well.
This one is horrible. "Pay No Mind" is acceptable but fairs much better in album context. The bonus cuts are insulting. "Special People" is funny for about 12 seconds, then devolves into same-y "humor." The other tunes are pseudo-blues and wacky (not in a good way) yodelling. When you consider that the man handled several folk/blues styles sincerely and with dynamite songwriting results on "One Foot in the Grave", this collection is a big letdown.
Not that it really matters since it's long out of print. But don't be fooled into buying an expensive used copy of this. Any of his K Records 7-inches are substantially better. The other "Mellow Gold" singles are also wonderful. In my opinion, Beck has exceptional quality control and I enjoy my substantial collection of his work. But this one is awful.
only for hardcore fans.......2004-04-03
This is a very ordinary single from Beck. When I saw that there were 3 non-LP tracks on this one I got my hopes up, since Beck's b-sides are usually very good. These tracks are trash though and would only be of marginal interest to your average Beck fan. 'Special People' is just a silly vocal performance, Trouble of My Days is pretty boring also. The last track does redeem the single somewhat since it has a decent melody but the quality is very rough (as is the case with the previous two). Basically, you are paying for three boring and very short demos. Stay away unless you are truly obsessed with Beck.

ah, Be[c]k... a modern master. but I say the obscurer the material the better, usually & the b-sides here [we all have Mellow Gold anyway, don't we?] are from the highly sought after Golden Feelings tape which was one of his earliest & rarest releases, these are apparently cleaned up a little bit soundwise. Anyway Special People features 2 lots of vocals from Beck & nothing else, chanting "special people, steal some beef" & other things that special people do, hilarious & utterly demented. Trouble All My Days is THE BLUES, MAN! real raw & twangy, introduced w/ a little evangelical tv snippet. Supergolden Black Sunchild has a lot of twisted yodelling then he breathes out rather than sings "bless the sceptre, the genius doll?". I wish I had that whole album, then I would feel blessed, although it's not quite as excellent as the stuff on One Foot or Stereopathetic in my humble estimation. The a-side itself is genius, unforgettable stuff, 1 of his best ever. An alternate lyrics version called Got No Mind can be found on the Beercan + more! single which I recommend too. I consider this a 9 & 1/2 minute album rather than a single. Enjoy.
Worth a listen.......2000-03-15
Of course, "Pay No Mind" is terrific. As to the other three songs, "Special People" is a strange a cappella poem that didn't make it onto my B-sides mix tape. "Trouble All My Days" sounds like it was recorded for ten bucks, but it's kinda charming in its sloppiness. "Supergolden" is great--it's the only time I've heard Beck try a "head voice" in his singing.
so-so.......1999-11-27
Being a huge Beck fan, I found this single to be quite a disappointment. "Pay No Mind" has always been one of my favorites, however the rest of the songs are pretty much throw-aways that even the obsessed could do without. Check out the much better "Loser" or "Beercan" singles instead.
