The cd is OK.......not great, but then I didn't seem to remember such loud music in the series.....I think I expected more of the troubadour and Carol King.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-01-10

If you like the Gilmore Girls shows, then this cd is a must. I bought it for my 14 year old daughter. She was thrilled when she opened the cd on Christmas.

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25

I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-12

When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars stellar compilation........2007-03-19

i did not arrive on the planet until 1961, so these were not my songs, but i am loving them all the same. a devoted audiophile, i have been acquiring a taste for popular music from the forties only recently. this is a stellar collection if you are looking for pop music from that era. if you get this double cd compilation, rhino records 2 cd's titled "songs that got us through WWII volumes 1 & 2," and "G.I. jukebox," from hip-o records, you will have 5 discs (with some, but not much overlap in songs) of music to transport you back in time for an entire evening. highly enjoyable stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection for the WWII generation..........2007-03-02

I work with elderly people and purchased this CD to play for them at their New Year's Eve party. They loved it.... Nostalgia was definitely in the air. There are a lot of songs on this CD for a great price. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD- Had a 1940's party -Residents Loved it!.......2007-01-18

Ordered this cd for our 1940's Afternoon of Music. Our Elderly Residents Loved it! Great selection!

2 out of 5 stars Good songs, but some later remakes.......2006-06-03

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, if you're enjoying this collection -- I hope you'll continue to enjoy it.

But those who are thinking about purchasing this set should know that some of these recordings are not the original versions, but were recorded well after World War II. For example, the Andrews Sisters and Harry James, among the artists represented on this compilation issued by Capitol, were not on that label until after the war. The reason that the sound quality here is so good, at least on some songs, is that those recordings were made in stereo during the 1950s.

Even the usually reliable All Music Guide mistakenly assumed that Capitol created this good-sounding collection through cross-label licensing and 24-bit mastering. In reality, the label simply used its own later versions of some of the songs, rather than licensing the originals from other labels.

None of this is a reason not to enjoy this collection unless you're looking for recordings that were actually around during World War II -- if so, you'll need to keep searching. I give this collection only 2 stars because I think that Capitol may be trying to convince consumers that these are the original versions of the recordings, when they're not. (If Capitol had actually obtained those originals, this collection would deserve 5 stars easily.)

5 out of 5 stars You'll be singing these songs all day long........2006-01-23

Of all the CDs of songs of the 1940s that I have heard, this one really touched both me and my wife a lot. We play the songs whenever we are in the car and we find ourselves waking up in the morning singing these wonderful songs.

The remastering has produced terrific sounds of these songs we grew up with. This would be a wonderful gift for someone who was alive in during Worl War II. Or, a wonderful gift if you want to know what music was like in the 1940s (which we refer to as the good old days).

So many of the big bands of those days like Les Brown, Kay Kyser, Harry James, Stan Kenton. And vocalists like The Andrew Sisters, Helen O'Connell, Peggy Lee, and Jo Stafford singing these songs just as they sounded back then.

This music brings back those wonderful days when a typical date was to go dancing to one of these bands. You'll have such good memories when you hear them.

My wife and I couldn't be any happier or more enthused by any other CDs (yes there are two CDs, a total of 40 songs).

Do you remember Mairzy Doats, Tampico, the Pied Pipers singing Dream, Drinkin Rum and Coca Cola, Long Ago and Far Away, Johnny Mercer singing Strip Polka, and Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition. So many great songs popular during World War II.

5 out of 5 stars the best from flame.......2007-06-28

i have the other two cd's from flame and this is by far his best work, the beats were pounding, but most importantly his lyrics were straight from the bible, and he did not hesitate to attack a lot of issues we are dealing with today, flame is truly annointed, there is no way anyone could fake that level of passion, this album is perfect for new converts or teenagers ( i gave out a copy at church and the teens loved it) , i bought it almost a month ago and it stil gets regular play in the car and on the ipod,, i can press random and ride with no problem, this cd is a hip hop gospel classic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2007-06-25

This is one of the best Christian Rap CD that I have ever heard. It really is an "end time" record. Every track is tight. You can really listen to this project straight through. I feel like you can really give this CD to someone that is close or not so close to you that does not know the Lord as their Savior and it would touch their hearts. When I listen to this CD I want to give it away to someone that does not know the Lord and is stuck in the ways of this world because I believe that it would touch their hearts to what to know Christ. My fav. tracks on the ablum are Good Ain't Bad, Call Him, When You Step, Worldview, Our World Fallen, basically on the real, I love the whole CD. Flame did his thing on this project, God really used him in a mighty way. Get this CD you will be blessed.

5 out of 5 stars Flame's Best CD to date*****.......2007-06-18

Another solid CD from Flame in fact I personally feel that this is the best of his 3 CD's although I recommend his two previous CD's (Rewind and Flame). I actually don't skip a single track throughout this CD; however, the last track on this CD with J.R. and J-Son, his "When You Step" with Da T.R.U.T.H, and "Bad Ain't Good" are phenomenal tracks that get repeated use in my IPod!!! I recommend this CD to any christian or secular hip-hop fan as this is definitely one of the best Cross Movement CD's to date. I also highly recommend 13 Letters by the 116 clique as Flame does the "Ephesians" track on that CD. I also would recommend Lecrae's "After the Music Stops". And Cross Movement HIS-tory CD which is the Cross Movement's last and probably most solid group project.

5 out of 5 stars .......2007-06-01

Awesome album. Just what I've come to expect from this soldier in Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Finally...Flame Has Arrived.......2007-04-30

Upon hearing of the release of Flame's 3rd album I was a bit reluctant about purchasing this piece, namely because of the theological tone of his first 2 releases(the attacks on different denominations and other faiths left a bad taste in my mouth because that's NOT how you salt the earth and light the world...Jesus said the world would know we're His by our love, not by our apologetics/debates). I was determined that I was going to get rid of all 3 releases if he'd done another joint like "The Real On," but to my surprise, what we have here is Flame's TRUE ARRIVAL to the game. The production is tight, the creativity is there, the lyrics are there, and for once...the theme from start to finish is the world's need for redemption thru Christ, Flame goes back to the basics...the redemptive work of Christ. This is a perfect example of the formula the put Cross Movement on the map in the 1st place. I'd still like to see an apology for the tone of the "theology" joints he dropped in albums 1 & 2, but if Our World:Redeemed picks up where Fallen left off...I'm all in. Much love for Flame this time around. Pray for the Peace. <> <

Album Description

You've arrived in the ultimate luxury resort for your soul. Come into the lounge where you can restore your body, mind and spirit. Settle in as you join our visionary house DJs, the Gordon Brothers (creators of the original Buddha-Lounge series) as they carefully hand-pick the freshest sounds around - exploring the more intimate side of mystical multi-cultural grooves with this perfectly transcendent blend of sensuously hypnotic rhythms, richly radiant vocals and an exotic array of ethnic instruments. Featuring an incredible line-up of world/lounge luminaries including Althea W., Ginkgo Garden, Joe Weinek Opera-to-Relax, Peter Mergener, Artemisia, TAU, David & Steve Gordon and many more genre-bending mixologists. De-stress and unwind, as deep ancient wisdom meets with these mesmerizing modern beats to create the definitive nu-global soundtrack for today; perfectly suited for deepening your yoga experience, as the perfect backdrop for socializing or any time you just want to chill-out.

"If you need a compilation to hold you over until the next installment in Sequoia's "Buddha-Lounge" series gets released, HOTEL TARA is the perfect place to take up residence. Like that series, the album features a luscious non-stop mix of ethnic-flavored grooves, spiritual essence and intoxicating beats compiled and mixed by the Gordon brothers. HOTEL TARA ups the "dreamy" quotient, creating an atmosphere that is at once peaceful and soulful. The beats are low-tempo and many of the songs have a touch of Indian instrumentation as well as a subtle retro-lounge flair. Artists include David and Steve Gordon, Gingko Garden, Althea W., Jaya Lakshmi, Artemisia and others. This is a great album for anyone looking for music that is mellow and cerebral - it is perfect for chilling out to."

5 out of 5 stars Unwind with this..........2007-03-26

Smooth, sensous, soothing, and sultry. A couple of cuts a little on the "loungy" side but overall this is an excellent CD that delivers exactly what you would expect from the title. The quality of this stuff is definitely a cut above a lot of the other budda-lounge wannabes.

5 out of 5 stars A maverick New Age/Eastern hybrid classic!.......2005-03-25

I am absolutely taken into the beauty and harmony that is the album "Hotel Tara". I first heard this at an independent CD store recently and after finding out who it was, I instantly bought the new album and I am proud of my choice of buying it. This album reminds me very strongly of the Earthtone collection series from years ago. After the apparent and unfortunate demise of the Earthtone label, Sequoia Records seems to have taken the torch and "Hotel Tara" is a powerful CD. "Apollo 13" is a highly eclectic track that incorporates voice effects of a NASA space mission with a gorgeous jazz/New Age groove. "Govinda Hari" is an electrifying song with haunting Eastern Indian voices and a very entrancing melody. This is such a wonderful CD and I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Blissful Eastern Chill.......2005-03-10

Nothing less than superb ! This new titles from Sequoia Groove is a blissful voyage into the very best of Eastern influenced downtempo chill-out music. A provacative follow up to Sequoia's Buddha Lounge series. This album really transports the listener into some very exoctic and sensuous musical landscapes. I especially love the Jaya Lakshmi track "Govinda Hari" and "Apollo 13" by Joe Werineck which incorporates actual original recordings from the space mission into a lushly textured background of slow and sultry electonica. This is a great addition to any downtempo musical collection. If you like, Buddha Bar or Hotel De Costa you will love Hotel Tara.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Music for Sacred Lovers.......2005-02-10

David & Steve Gordon have done it again ! Just when you thought it could'nt get any better, these musical visionaries deepen the mix even further. Hotel Tara bills itself as "The Intimate Side of Buddha Lounge" and it certainly delivers on that promise. This is an exotic and enticing blend of traditional Eastern music with the very best that Western downtempo-electronica has to offer, featuring an superlative assortment of the very best Sequoia artists and some absolutely alluring new artists. Likely the most noteable being the lead track "L'Heure Verte/The Green Hour"from Artemisia, the new Steve Gordon solo project with it's distinctive tabla beat, exquisite tamboura, sensuous guitar and luminous vocals provided by Jaya Lakshmi whose "Govinda Hari" also graces the album. David Gordon's new solo track "Floating" is also fantastic, melding chill-out and smooth jazz effortlessly into this delightfully transcendent tune. My wife and I have now found our new favorite CD for our intimate encounters and Tantra sessions. These Sequoia Groove titles just keep getting better and better and this one is perfect suited for the the Sacred Lover. Keep them coming. Absolutely delightful.

4 out of 5 stars Great buy.......2007-07-09

This cd is one of the best cd's I've ever heard. Timbaland's beats cant be replaced, magoo's gritty voice and timabland's hooks are great together. Mix in ginuine, missy, playa, and aaliyah...and the album is complete. My favorite songs are Man Undercover (by Aaliyah), Up jumps the Boogie Remix, Smoke In The Air (Playa) and Joy (Playa and Ginuwine.) This album is definitly worth your money. I love it!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Foundation.......2007-02-27

From the hypnotizing charm to the raw lyrics this cd is SOLID. It's got staying power and demands respect from your ears...I am SO glad I finally got my own copy!

5 out of 5 stars One of Hip Hop's Most Innovative Albums...a landmark production.......2005-09-11

Back in 1997, Timbaland and Magoo came out with their classic cd, Welcome to our World. The reason that makes this one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, is the creative production. Timbaland created beats that no one has ever heard anything like before. His use of off-beat off-drum patterns alond with funky keyboards, synths and guitar licks, made this joint out of VA a straight up classic. Also, a lot of people didn't like Magoo's flow or lyrics, but Magoo is one of the most creative emcee's out there. His flow and use of creative worldplay and punchlines makes him a dangerous emcee on the mic. Alot of mc's out there couldnt touch Magoo. Great lrycism and production of a timeless classic in hip hop.

5 out of 5 stars Love the 'Up Jumps' Remix..........2004-09-08

...actually the stripped down version of the original with a cricket chirping rhythm, a deconstructed Rod Temperton keyboard riff, an offal spouting Magoo, a sober Timbaland and a 'gone-you-don't-know-gone-you-don't-know' Missy. Partiable today. Magic still.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Hip Hop Albums Of All Time.......2003-09-01

This album is so innovative and precisely produced. With beats provided by Mozart Timadeas (my favorite producer), vocals by Magoo, Missy, Playa, Ginuwine, Aaliyah, this album is a 5 out of 5. At first listen you'll be like what the heck is this, but for sure after the first listen of the whole album you'll be hooked to it. From the first track to the last. You have hip hop and R&B throughout this entire album. When you listen to the album you will notice that they were ahead of their time. After listening to the album I thought, damn, "These cats were on some tight stuff back in '97", and indeed they were. I am telling you this is one of the most creative albums ever. There is a track on the album where Timbaland just talks over the beat and you actually rock to it. I love the whole album, but my favorite tracks are Luv 2 Luv U ( both versions ), Up Jumps The Boogie ( both versions ), Joy, Man Undercover, Clock Strikes. I am a true Timbaland fan, I am down with him and the whole click, holla at ya boy!

Emotional, ethereal, and evocative, "Immortal Memory" is a timeless album of extraordinary transcendence. She's also scored or contributed to "Heat", "Whalerider", "Ali", "The Insider", "Mission Impossible 2", "Black Hawk Down", and more. Patrick Cassidy is widely recognized as Ireland's most important classical composer and has released three acclaimed albums. 4 out of 5 stars Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24

This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.

The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.

The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.

The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.

The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.

The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.

The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?

The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.

The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.

The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.

Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.

Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2007-03-17

Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.

Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.

2 out of 5 stars Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies.......2006-05-10

Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

3 out of 5 stars haunting yet empty.......2005-10-19

It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

4 out of 5 stars Ethereal beauty.......2005-07-29

This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

2 out of 5 stars Commercial and disappointing.......2000-12-19

If this CD has made this fantastic quartet known to a larger number of people, then, it's fine. But what a desappointment in terms of music ! A few interresting songs, but i can't feel any great inspiration in this commercial CD poorly surfing on the ethnic wave. A shame.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Infectious Rhythms.......2000-10-31

When this recording was first released, it remained a best-selling classical CD for some time, even though it is not "classical music" in the strict sense of that term. But it is a grabber. It presents some very interesting compositions by contemporary African composers, that while different, are also listenable. Unless one's mind is totally closed to new sounds and new ideas, this is quite an enjoyable collection.

In addition to the African composers, which this CD brings to our attention, it has also served as an introduction for many of us to the Kronos Quartet, a talented group of musicians, who perform a varied repertoire. They are quite good and never boring, as these performances amply demonstrate.

5 out of 5 stars Pieces that fit together a continent.......2000-08-29

More than just a compilation of great music by noted African composers, the album is a repository for the emotional richness of Africa. Each piece is lively, intricate and accessible. There is much joy here; the tracks are full of happiness, heat and nightfall. Also sorrow, but that's Africa, too. A friend gave this to me when I happened to be writing a book about Africa, and it became my soundtrack. I have given dozens of CDs to friends who love Africa. From "Sunset" by Foday Musa Suso to "Waterwheel" by Hamza El Din, "Pieces of Africa" is one of the great musical adventures of the past decade.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2000-03-02

I largely consider myself an alternative rock fan and to describe my knowledge of classical music as "limited" would be kind. I first got to know Kronos when they covered Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and had a video (which I saw once) on either VH1 or MTV. I was fascinated, so when they came to perform at my college (back in 1992) I went to see them. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. They didn't play, they didn't perform in the sense that most classical artists I've seen perform. It has one-half recital, one-half performance art.

So, I rushed out and bought a CD--fortunately it was "Pieces of Africa." I have since bought about half of Kronos's CDs, and all of their releases since, but this one ranks as my favorite. Why? It is joyful, uplifiting, and spiritual without being sentimental. It is a beautiful CD, rich in texture and melody. The quartet is often accompanied by vocalists, drummers, and other African musicians in a way that doesn't simply "feature" them, but integrates them. You can feel the collaboration among the artists.

Above all, this CD offers an accessible, non-threatening introduction to Kronos and their work. If you never explore beyond this CD, never buy Tan Dun or Night Prayers, your life will still be better for having heard this wonderful music.

5 out of 5 stars inventive and lively.......1999-11-11

I especially like the quartet by Volans and waterwheel. But there are no bad pieces here and most are sprightly and inventive, with a few really beuatiful ones.

Pure Gershwin was Michael Feinstein's first album, and it remains one of his best. It may not have the production values of his later Gershwin tributes, Nice Work if You Can Get It (1996) and Michael & George (1998), but it simply and directly presents Feinstein in his piano-bar days, singing to his own tasteful accompaniments with occasional contributions from bass and drums and a second piano. Establishing the patterns for his later albums, he sings unjustly neglected verses to familiar songs, uncovers some never-before-recorded gems ("The World Is Mine," "What Causes That"), and provides song-by-song notes. Longtime friend Rosemary Clooney guests on "Isn't It a Pity?" --David Horiuchi

this is good...and just to hear a REALLY GREAT "Isn't A Pity" duet with Rosie is well worth the price of admission. I REPEAT: just to hear a REALLY GREAT "Isn't A Pity" duet with Rosie is well worth the price of admission. listen & enjoy some great american music. you cant beat an Ira lyric.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD.......2005-05-19

PURE GERSHWIN is just that, pure!. Feinstein interprets Gershwin the way it was meant to be performed. This is pure delight!

4 out of 5 stars Quiet and elegant.......2003-04-20

Michael Feinstein's thin voice is compensated by his apparent enthusiasm for the material and a spare arrangement of piano, bass, and drum that gives this recording the ambiance of an intimate piano bar. Before hearing this disc, I knew only Gershwin's biggest hits, so many of the numbers here were new to me and increase my appreciation of that great American composer.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-04-10

I bought this cd because I am a huge Gershwin enthusiast and am always on the lookout for versions of one of my favorite pieces, "Liza". I'd heard a lot of buzz about Feinstein and the supposed wonderfulness of his Gershwin interpretations, so I thought I would give this album a shot.

I was extremely disappointed. Feinstein seems to suck the life out of Gershwin's compositions, a feat I would have previously thought impossible. Though I concede that vocalists are free to reinterpret songs (many to a great success, as in Louis Armstrong's and Ella Fitzgerals's enjoyable versions of Gershwin), I think Feinstein's lazy tempos "loungy" voice make the tracks on this album boring and annoying.

I have loved to listen to and sing these songs my entire life. I just wanted to warn listeners who perhaps, like myself, enjoy George Gershwin's music for its beautiful clarity and energy (as easily experienced through Gershwin's own recordings, early interpretations by artists such as the Astaires, and even recent broadway "Crazy For You") that they will not experience any feeling of the sort from Michael Feinstein.

Amidst all the gushing that has recently been done over him, I found Michael Feinstein to have attempted to murder "Liza" and the other songs on this album. He merely displays a very unexceptional voice and poor interpretive taste. Fans beware, Feinstein proves that it is possible to make a bad cd of Gershwin songs. I'd recommend listening elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars they can't take that album away from me.......2002-05-09

they say the third time's a charm, but in this instance, it is the first time -- michael feinstein's first gershwin album -- that is the charm. this album is by far better and more listenable than the next two -- "feinstein sings gershwin" and "nice work if you can get it".

the listenability of this album may stem from the fact that it is a bare-bones arrangement, with two pianos, a bass and drums, a la a jazz trio, with no embellishment, so michael feinstein's then sincere and unsophisticated voice is the featured instrument.

i heartily recommend this album, as every song on it is a gem and feinstein's voice is more appealing than on the two later albums, when he jazzed it up with what sounds like an echo chamber and other electronic enhancements and he seems to be doing the songs by the numbers.

feinstein's version of "liza," slowed down to ballad form and plaintively phrased, is the best i have ever heard. the duet with rosemary clooney on "isn't it a pity," again brings out the best of feinstein's then-new voice and shows why george's (clooney) aunt is rightfully considered a jazz legend.

the combined "he loves and she loves/how long has this been going on" is another melodic/poignant highlight, while the album's finale, "someone to watch over me," is a stirring anthem to wanting and needing someone and is done with vocal and instrumental passion; it brings this collection of songs to a fitting crescendo.

for a lawyer's kid from columbus, ohio who started out cataloguing gershwin estate material for the reclusive ira and then began singing the songs for family and friends, michael feinstein has done all right for himself. he has become the recognized interpreter of the gershwin legacy, sort of the same way his pseudo-cousin, john, jr. feinstein, has become the recognized interpreter of the bob knight legacy... .

michael feinstein may have hit a home run his first time up with this album, and it may be his best, as it is the purest and most joyful celebration of gershwin tunes, while the others are fancier, more jazzed up and ponderous and less appealing.

the other albums are certainly not bad, though, and i recommend buying them to fill out a feinstein or gershwin collection, but this one is by far the best one to get if you are only going to get one as a sample of either's work. it is nice work, and you can get it.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely girly, but still a great album .......2007-05-15

It's girly, yes. It's a boy band, yeah. But this CD made a bunch of bucks, in the US and Europe. It's got 17 tracks, one of the a remake of "Angel". The best part is that it's a great gift for your girl if she's a fan; the album that led Westlife to the light of the day.

5 out of 5 stars Another Awesome Album From Westlife.......2006-01-30

Okay this review is basically going to be a song by song kinda deal...

QUEEN OF MY HEART- This is a great song. Perfect choice for the first single released for the album.
BOP BOP BABY- I love this song. And it's even better that it was written by Shane and Bryan. The video is cool, too.
I CRY- I love Mark in this song. So soulful.
WHY DO I LOVE YOU- This is a great song as well. Are we seeing a theme here? I can just picture the dance moves when I hear "Why do I love you like I do..Like I always do" LOL.
I WANNA GROW OLD WITH YOU- I love this song. Such a strong ballad and you can totally tell that these guys wrote this while missing their ladies. I like how Nicky gets a few lines here, too.
EVERGREEN- Not the best song on the album but it has grown on me. I don't really get how you make a night evergreen, though. :)
WORLD OF OUR OWN- This is the song I look forward to every time I play this CD. It is perfectly mixed with perfect singing. I like how Shane's voice gets raspy at times. And Mark is once again amazing here.
TO BE LOVED- This is actually a song where I thought to myself "Hey, that could be a good first dance song for a wedding". One of the best ballads they have done, in my opinion.
DRIVE- I like how this song is a bit different than the rest. They have that part where it's almost a cappella that I love.
IF YOUR HEART'S NOT IN IT- Another song I look forward to when I listen to this CD. Every line sounds so heartfelt.
WHEN YOU COME AROUND- I have to say I haven't listened to this song as much as the others. But I do love the beat in the background. And it's a song that makes you feel happy.
DON'T SAY IT'S TOO LATE- I like this song. Not my favorite, but it has grown on me.
DON'T LET ME GO- Again, I'm glad Nicky and Kian get some lines in this song.
WALK AWAY- I like the sound of "If you want a man that is here to stay..." Good song.
LOVE CRIME- I'm not crazy about it, but it's a good solid song. Takes some getting used to.
IMAGINARY DIVA- I LOVE this song. I didn't at first, but I do now. Again, Mark's voice (and songwriting) is amazing.
ANGEL- I do like this song, but it has been soooo overplayed in the US that I'm not crazy about it. I do think that Westlife did a great job covering it though. It is not an easy song to sing.

Overall, I think this album is definitely a must-have for any pop music fan. And what I love about it is that it is a great CD for working out. The treadmill is much more bearable while this CD is playing. :)

5 out of 5 stars Better Than N*Sync or The Backstreet Boys!.......2005-02-20

I am older and since then, I've kind of been out of the whole boy band or N*Sync thing but, Westlife is an exception. Westlife the U.K's version of N*Sync and the Backstreet Boys is actually better than both groups. With beautiful music, charm, and actual singing ability! This group has all the thing most boy bands lack... and in fact, we the U.S.A are missing out are this worldwide hit group(although we in the U.S.A never catched on to them). This in my opinon is well-worth it's price-tag and perfect gift for any teen or pre-teen girl! Parents buy this one if you've got a daughter who is a pop fantic and N*Sync fans beware this group can sing!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Album.......2004-01-22

Even after 2 years, this album is still my favourite album of all times. Most are single-quality songs and there are many that are tear-makers. This album is more uptempo then C2C and Westlife. Some of the great ballads are Queen of My Heart, I Cry, Why Do I Love You. Some mid-tempo like Don't Say It's too Late, Drive, Love Crime (which is my personal fav.). World of Our Own, (When You're Looking Like That & Uptown Girl in UK album) are songs to rock up the album!

5 out of 5 stars What Westlife really wants to tell the world.......2003-12-19

For a music crazy guy like me, Westlife is jus' 1 of the many bands that I admire. But this album of their's - World Of Our Own, is truly spectacular. It stands out for its length, quality and the song selection. Some songs like 'Love Crime', 'World Of Our Own', 'Angel' and 'Bop Bop Baby' just stand out from the rest - they are AWESOME!

But overall, I'd just like to congratulate all you guys - Shane, Bryan, Nicky, Kian and Mark (WESTLIFE - in all), for a job well done!
