Even though Dave was gone with this release, Slayer stayed strong. While it isn't as good as their first 5 albums, it is still worthy of 5 starts and amazing. This was the last Slayer album I bought, simply because I listened too everybody else too much. I figured if it was like Reign in Blood part 2, I wanted nothing to do with it. Simply because If I wanna listen to Reign in Bl0od then well, i'll listen to Reign in Blood. However, I don't really see it, this album stands as a strong but sadly over looked Slayer classic. Jeff and King seem like they may slow it down a little bit here, which at first was annoying, i'd be sitting listening to this album, grinding my teeth waiting for it to speed up (i.e. ss-3) Once I got over that though, it seems that the speed might have done more wrong than right for this album. Don't get me wrong, it is still quite fast. Vocal wise, this is up there with South of Heaven as one of Tom's best vocal performances. While dave is missed (welcome back!!!) Paul does a steady job of filling in, as he would for years. All in all, don't let the few nay sayers stop you from purchasing this album. It's Slayer, never dissapointed. Never anything less.
Killing Fields - 5/5 Talk about starting an album off with an anthem. This is one where I could only imagine how crazy the crowd is at a live show while this one is being played. The first 25 seconds can't even begin to prepare you for what happens next. To think, this is only the first song.
Sex. Murder. Art. - 5/5 A fast one and definetly a good one. A good opening riff leads into killer lyrics/vocals. I feel the drums slow it down a little too much in the start of things but after about 20 seconds, that is not a problem. Definetly a personal favorite of mine. Also a wonderful song name. Tom flows quite well with his vocals here. Should please any thrash maniac.
Fictional Reality - 5/5 Reminds me of a faster version of "Killing Fields" the main riff here, is one of the most memorable from this album. Probably Pauls best work is here. He really helps the flow of the song click well.
Dittohead - 4/5 The intro riff tells you one thing. "This song is going to be short and fast" which is pretty much what it is. One of the fastest here. Part of me thinks they tried to make it too slow and sped it up a bit too much and maybe should have added another 45 seconds or so to this one.
Divine Intervention - 5/5 A song that lets you take a small break. A bit long for the normal Slayer song, over 5 + minutes. Really sets the mood for the second half of the album. Not one to be missed. I love the dark almost depressing feel of the outro for this song.
Circle of Beliefs - 4.5/5 Right away, Tom starts belting it out with his vocals, I wish this song had more of an intro to it. Other than that I can't think of anything else wrong with this. It has one of the best solos on the album. It almost has a "distant" feel which gives it more atmosphere when a solo isn't being played.
SS-3 - 6/5 A song that took me some getting used to. When I did though, it became one of my favorites if not my favorite. The riffs here are the darkest you will find on this album. a song that w ill beat you jsut as hard as any other Slayer track but jsut doing it a bit slower. Enoguh to agonize.
Serenity in Murder - 4.5/5 The song name says it all, I don't think I need to say anything more. This is the type of asylum patient violence we've come to love from Slayer. only here, Tom does some really good singing, which could be called "Spooky" definetly adds something to the song. The guitars hold back here, that doesn't kill the song though.
213 - Definetly the song with the most atmosphere here. The string intro is just great. One of the best songs here. Not one to be passed over. The chorus is a bit choppy but other than that it is great.
Mind Control - 4.5/5 One of the fastest songs here. Can't go wrong with that. A good way to go out. Tom seems to put a little more venom into his vocals here. Great guitar solos as well.
So once again, you can never go wrong with Slayer. Enjoy.
THERES NO LOMBARDO WAH WAH WAH.......2006-08-05
Its sinful that such a great album doesnt have a 5 star average. This is quality thrash metal right here, with a slightly refined sound to it. All the songs have blistering solos, crazy as hell riffs, and of course, Paul Bostaphs inhuman drumming, which brings me to another a point. PAUL BOSTAPH IS JUST AS GOOD AS DAVE LOMBARDO YOU F-ING RETARDS!!!!!! GET IT THROUGH YOUR F-ING SKULLS.
Sorry, I had to get that out. But seriously, just listen to the crazy intro to Killing Fields, his crazy pummeling in Dittohead, and his double bass madness in SS-3. This is Slayer, quality Slayer, and all the b-chin needs to stop. Im betting about half of you who are trashing this album havent even listened to it, like the retards reviewing Trivium and Unearth. If your like those Sepultura and Anthrax fans who refuse to move out of the 80s and early 90s, than so be it. Your loss.
As for me, my favorite tracks are Killing Fields, SS-3, Mind Control, 213, and Dittohead.
If my review has convinced you to have a positive attitude about change, get Diabolus in Musica, this, and God Hates Us All. Also get some of Pauls work with Exodus, Forbidden, and Testament if you need further proof of his excellency.
Not their best, but a great intro for beginners.......2006-06-13
The problem with Divine Intervention is timing. Had this album been released after Reign in Blood or even after South of Heaven, it would have been considered a masterpiece, one of Slayer's finest. But having been released in 1994, it has far too much of a "been there, done that" feel to it, making it difficult to pinpoint any standout tracks. However, with that said, Divine intervention is a very exciting, aggressive LP that IMHO is the album Seasons in The Abyss should have been. This is undoubtedly one of their fastest efforts, although it is not simply a case of "Reign in Blood Redux"; most of the lyrics (with heavy contributions from Tom Araya) deal with the theme of criminal pathology and the breakdown of society, being Slayer's first album with no reference to "Satan." Despite the somewhat rough production values (the band did this one themselves) the balance of strong musicianship, intelligent lyrics and a variety of tempos with a bias toward extreme speed makes this a nice introduction for newcomers to the band. Furthermore, whatever creative rut Slayer found themselves in with this album would be more than compensated for on their next effort, Diabolus in Musica. My personal favorites: Killing Fields, Fictional Reality, Dittohead and Serenity in Murder.
good but a little choppy.......2006-06-10
First things first.Lombardo is not on here.Bostaph is a very good drummer but he isn't the right drummer for slayer. That title belongs to Lombardo and him only. Now to the review. This a good album and now a bit overlooked and forgotten. It still has some slamming songs but this is the last Slayer I usually reach for.To their credit the sound is actually heavier than ever but the songs are just not the classics of the previous three. This still belongs in any Slayer collection. This is Slayer in transition.A new drummer and new decade and now competing with the death metal movement. The best song is the title track.

The premise of Divine Intervention is as follows: Steven Halpern performs 10 piano improvisations (plus an eight-minute piece for electronic keyboards, the disc-closing "Rest in the Light") in the presence of Starr Fuentes, a woman identified in the liner notes as a "healer and master teacher" and a "Bishop of 64 Divine Intervention congregations." As Halpern plays, Fuentes's contribution is "anchoring and transmitting multidimensional energy fields." What is the result of all this focused energy? Nothing quite as revelatory as the recording's title might suggest. The disc opens on a promising note, with a gentle, sweetly melodic charmer simply titled "Opening Theme." What follows thereafter is more formal-sounding, serious-minded music, as if Halpern is searching the piano's lower ranges for notes suitable for the ostensible profundity of the occasion. On the Halpern functionality scale, this would be a disc (at times a well-played one) more appropriate for reflection and rumination and less for incandescent bliss. --Terry Wood

A profound and enlightening presentation and approach.......2003-01-04
Having benefited from more than 30 years of study with indigenous healers, curanderos, shamans, and spiritual masters (and is the lineage holder in a long line of Mayan healers), Starr Fuentes is currently the Bishop for over 260 healing ministries worldwide. In collaboration with composer, recording artist and sound healer Steven Halpern, Faintest has created Healing: Guided Meditations With Starr Faintest and Releasing The Energies Of Cancer: Guided Meditations With Starr Faintest: two outstanding meditation CDS that would grace any personal or alternative medicine collection. Listeners will learn to channel their meditation process toward healing their illnesses, empowering their spirits, and enhancing their overall wellbeing. The musical enhancements of Steven Halpern are perfectly suite enhancements of Starr Faintest's profound and enlightening presentation and approach. Highly recommended for students of metaphysics, alternative healing, and seekers of personal enlightenment.

After pretty much inventing and pioneering death metal in the early '80s, Slayer spent years playing as fast and with as much intensity as they could muster. But after 1986's pinnacle of death, Reign in Blood, the band decided to explore the slower side of intense volume, so it tempered the tempos and indulged in a darker, more atmospheric sound. But with 1994's Divine Intervention, the band proved it could still race to the finish line. Somewhat messier than much of their earlier output, the record makes up in brutality whatever it lacks in precision. If "Killing Fields," "Circle of Belief," and "Sex, Murder, Art" quicken the pulse, the hardcore velocity-fest "Dittohead" will cause the heart to explode in showers of Divine gore. Not for the timid. --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
It's Slayer !!!!.......2006-01-25
Released in 1994 after 4 years and a change in their drummer, this album really was a turning point for Slayer. Not once is the word Satan mentioned in any of these songs ! When I first heard the album, I was a little disapointed (we waited 4 years), but it was still Slayer. The album starts with this cascade of drums and rips right into Killing Fields, which is an excellent song. Right away you can hear the difference in their sound...but is it for the better ?! Seasons in the Abyss had such a crystal clear sound and Divine Intervention just does not sound up to par when compared to the Seasons. That being said, this is a great metal album that is overlooked by many. I must say that I do enjoy this album much more than their most recent material and would recommend it to all. Highlights are Killing Fields, Sex. Murder. Art., 213, Mind Control,
bow before the gods.......2004-05-18
Feeling compelled late at night to offer forth my two cents worth, since for some horrible reason there isn't a review of this record (maybe infamy is enough), so... After four years between studio offerings, the spawns of hell return unabated, ferocious and blood hungry as ever. By no means a bad thing, this is a typical Slayer album full of all those 120db subtleties and nuances that we've all come to know and love. No sh*t, the power and aggression of these guys is incredible, and when all those metal mainstays are busy writing sh*tty records and making themselves look like a bad U2 joke as they age (Metallica: just sell what little soul you kept and get it over with, thanks for scamming us with that "load" of sh*te), these guys beat you over the head with some of their heaviest production and songs that slide nicely into the catalogue like they were always there. Almost hard to believe they're on a major label. Ten years later I still spin this disk on a regular basis, it's seminility only challenged by that breathtaking "in the nightside eclipse" album those Emperor boys put out that same fateful year. What more is there to say? Anyone remotely interested in what metal is supposed to be (as in not written to sell records, for example) NEEDS this disk, since it does a pretty damn good job of actualizing my definition. One of the few old bands left in the genre that still deserve the "metal" moniker (thanks for "youthanising" your band, Dave). Light a doob, grab a shot and watch the sky turn red, fellow hellions. This is why you call yourselves metalheads, and this is what your parents warned you about. Now go. You have commerce to perform.
Best in thier arena- Metallica whimpers in thier shadow.......1998-01-18
This alblum represents a new level of Dementia. If you could pick an alblum -and band- to represent heavy-metal in a permanate archive, This is it! Very literate band. Divine Intervention is a turning point for Slayer. From young chasers of evil spirits, These men may have become Evil in the time leading up to this CD.Musicaly tight and drivin by a new drummer they do a clinic on hard core and the EXPLICID LYRICS on this one are so forward you live each scene they paint in your head. Sir Colin Davis has long been considered the world's finest Berlioz conductor, and over the years, Philips has released all of the composer's major works with Davis at the helm. Now, they're all here, in a 24-CD box, and it is an astonishing achievement. This treasure trove consists of the definitive, available readings of Les Troyens, Béatrice et Bénédict, and Benvenuto Cellini; a wonderfully energetic, passionate Roméo et Juliette; a Te Deum which is huge yet clear and not over-the-top for its own sake; Les Nuits d'été with different singers (of varying ranges in different songs), as Berlioz wanted them performed; the young Dame Janet Baker superb in Herminie and La Mort de Cléopatre; a relaxed, sweet Enfance du Christ; a Requiem which could knock you over; a Damnation de Faust which is both lyrical and exciting; a performance of Lélio which almost makes sense of that strange work; a Symphonie Fantastiquewith atmosphere and thrills; along with 7 overtures, 5 songs, and more. In addition to the moderate price, the packaging is such that the 24 CDs takes up less space than just the earlier releases of Cellini and Troyens together. This is one-stop shopping at its best. --Robert Levine

Great, definitely go with this and TAC.......2005-08-31
Right now, there are four official English-language versions of Les Miserables: the Original London Cast Recording, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, the Complete Symphonic Recording, and the 10th Anniversary Concert Recording. Les Mis' addicts are best served by purchasing all recordings, as they showcase different stages (as in the OLC and the OBC) of the development of this mega-musical, as well as the interesting variations in presentation and performances by the different casts and orchestras.
If you're the average musical-theater listener who can't afford to buy all available English-language recordings, however, my advice would be to get the CSR (due to the fact that it's "complete") and the TAC recording (due to the fact that performer- and performance-wise, it's leaps and bounds better than all of the other recordings). You deserve no less.
Awesome.......2005-07-03
I can't believe all the negative comments about Gary Morris. He is so much better in the role than Colm Wilkinson. I've seen Gary perform the part three times and there is NO better Jean ValJean (seen the play 14 times). It's an international cast and some of the accents do take time getting used to. But the power of the music supercedes it all. Listen with your heart people. It's so incredible.

"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.
However, if you're a serious Les Mis fan, you should buy this CD (in addition), simply because it does have the complete score. (The trouble with THAT is that it includes practically the only misstep in the whole script - if Jean Valjean has his number branded on his chest, then how is it credible that someone else will be convicted in his place?) I bought it for that reason and to hear other interpretations of the roles (in particular Andy Warlow's). I have all 4 versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses, but frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one. This version has a rather weak cast in general, but that does add to the fun arguing about it. On the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions), and Andy Warlow (a stirring Enjorlas for sure, but not THAT much better than Michael Maguire on the OBC and TAC). The scenes at the barricade are the best part of the CD. Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.
I really miss Colm Wilkinson (OLC, OBC and TAC). OK, he has a unique singing style, but such heart. Not always perfect, but so powerful and emotional. All his solos and "Confrontation" just stop me dead in my tracks. The sweetness and purity of his "Bring Him Home" and "Epilogue" move me to tears. But really, there must be someone else who can do at least an adequate job or the show wouldn't have run so long in so many venues. I am willing to listen to another interpretation, but not this one. This is the central role in the play, it really can't survive without a good performance here. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Epilogue". I haven't tried the recommendation of one reviewer of listening while squinting and shaking my head hard, but I don't see how that will help. Morris's "What have I done?", "Bring Him Home" and "Valjean's Confession" make me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button, although "Who am I?" isn't so bad. (I just tried the head shaking trick, it didn't help.)
magnificent!.......2005-06-15
Ok, I admit it. I have long been a fan of musicals, but I was only exposed to Les Mis a few months ago. My roommate loaned me this recording, and I fell in love. I played nothing but this soundtrack for the next several weeks.
As this is the only recording I've heard fully, I cannot give any comparisons between the performers here and those on other versions, but I do wish to give my general impression of the cast.
*Gary Morris (Valjean) - he has a strong, clear voice with which it is hard to find fault. He sings with emotion and passion, and I cannot imagine ever tiring of hearing him as Jean Valjean. If I had to give a complaint, it would be that I could imagine a voice with a little more distinct character...something a little riskier for the part of someone so complex.
*Philip Quast (Javert) - wow, I love deep voices, and his is so rich! I love when he hits the low note near the beginning of "Confrontation" ...I've seriously replayed that part over and over again just because it sends shivers through me...haha, I think you get the idea. This guy is good.
*Debbie Byrne (Fantine) - her voice took some getting used to because at first it seemed to me a little uncontrolled, almost like she could capture the fullness of the sound but not quite hit the notes. However, the more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. Her voice has a wonderful texture, something you totally miss when listening to the super-clear, trilling sopranos that seem to be found all over most other musicals.
*Kaho Shimada (Eponine) - her voice took a little getting used to as well. I was a little confused until I realized she was Japanese, for though I wouldn't say you hear an accent, her voice does have a very different quality to it. Still, I enjoyed her performance very much. Her voice is trembling with emotion the entire time, almost like she can hardly control it...it is quite moving.
*Tracy Shayne (Cosette) - wow. I'm sorry, is Cosette supposed to be this shrill? Turn it off! While I'm impressed at some of the notes she hits, I don't think it's supposed to make you want to cover your ears.
*Michael Ball (Marius) -Ball makes Marius, a rather annoying character if you ask me, into someone actually likable, if not lovable. He's passionate and romantic, but not vapid. Probably my favorite vocal performance.
*Gay Soper and Barry James (the Thernardiers) - their voices are rather grating, but that's the point, right? Very entertaining performances...particularly in "Master of the House" (which, it's true, somehow manages to be stuck in your head all day).
*Anthony Warlow (Enjorolas) - very appropriate voice...manly and vibrant. If he doesn't make you want to go out and fight, then there's no help for you!
Overall, the performances were wonderful. I highly recommend this CD. A great recording of a great musical!
Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-20
I bought this recently, and it was an object lesson in why I ought to research an item before purchasing it.
For me, it's truly a toss-up as to whether this is a recording worth purchasing. The main benefit-a far from insignificant one-is that it is a complete recording full of much more materiel than can be found on the London or Broadway cast recordings. Basically, I was far from satisfied. The liner notes are error ridden, and the casting was not as good as possible. Gary Morris struck me as too young for the part, and Gay Soper (Mme. Thenardier) has a voice akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. But, in the absence of a complete Broadway recording, this still may be the best version available to buy. Be sure, however, to supplement it with another version. (The Tenth Anniversary recording might be the best.)

Product Description
Following releases on such visionary labels as Lo Recordings, Simon Raymonde s Bella Union, Too Pure and Kraak, Bip_Hop is pleased to welcome the release of Rothko's newest ten track album, Eleven Stages of Intervention . Following collaborations with Susumu Yakota (Distant Sounds of Summer) and Caroline Ross (A Place Between), composer and band mainstay Mark Beazley (bass), Michael Donnelly (bass), Ben Page (keyboards/percussion) and Tom Page (drums) continue to create a warm and inviting sound, where solitary keyboard melodies transition from exploratory passages and fragile beauty intertwines effortlessly through somber basslines. Rothko's 2002 album "A Continual Search for Origins" is said to find its base in Beazley's visits to Switzerland, Eleven Stages of Intervention immediately ushers listeners to a similar mapping of interpersonal relationships, stories and insights. 'sit in silent though' (a full-band reworking of the Bad Hand single track) and 'break the cycle of sorrow' (a desire first voiced in 2003's Wish for a World without Hurt 12-inch and BLK w/ BEAR collaboration) act as familiar, yet renewed and re-imaged, pages in the Rothko sound-diary. 'weather every storm' along with 'give.every.thing' and 'watch the black sun fade' are additional stand-out tracks. The music of Rothko at equal turns challenges and comforts the listener. At first perhaps confrontational, yet ultimately nurturing. Familiar passages evolve from the improvisational ether. Healing follows conflict. Eleven Stages of Intervention -- the band's eleventh fulllength release -- adds to Rothko's already innovative and impressive catalogue.

Album Description
During the late 90's Charlotte was the hot spot of activity in what has become the much lauded North Carolina hardcore scene. It was home to PRAYER FOR CLEANSING, FROM HERE ON, UNDYING and countless others. With all those extremely vital bands now defunct, THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION has arrived to help carry the torch, thus lighting a path for the new breed of North Carolina hardcore. Like PRAYER FOR CLEANSING and UNDYING before them THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION combine a vast array of influences and inspirations from metal, hardcore, a straight-edge ideology all the while experimenting with more emotionally driven guitar interplay. Over the last few years THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION have been slugging it out in the trenches playing as many shows as possible throughout the South East and sharing the stage with such notable and diverse acts as: THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD, GLASS CASKET, MISERY INDEX, HASTE THE DAY, KILLWHITNEYDEAD, ARSIS, EXTOL, DEAD TO FALL, FIGHT PA! RIS, THE ACACIA STRAIN and EMBRACE TODAY. Their Tribunal Records debut, "Carefully Built | Carelessly Destroyed" was produced by Jamie King (BETWEEN THE BURIED & ME, BELOVED, GLASS CASKET, KILLWHITNEYDEAD, etc) as they felt he was the best person to help capture the intensity of their destructive live show. Besides the audio content found on "Carefully Built | Carelessly Destroyed" there is also an entire live set filmed in North Carolina. The video was filmed and edited by Blake Faucette of SERIES DVD fame and features 2 unreleased tracks not found on "Carefully Built | Carelessly Destroyed." The pits will keep getting bigger and the touring will never cease as THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION plan to spread the word about the new blood flowing here in North Carolina's hardcore scene.

These words need not to escape from my tongue.......2006-11-02
Let's look at The Damascus Intervention's record label, Tribunal Records, for a minute. A sports analogy seems most fitting here so that's what I'll use.
Killwhitneydead are at the forefront as any Tribunal follower would know, so they'd be the actual team. So if KWD is the team, then that would have to make The Damascus Intervention the mascot, the one who gets the fans into the game. From there you could go any number of ways as long as The Murdered is the next step.
With Tribunal pushing TDI so much it'd only seem likely for hopes to rise greatly and not be met. That doesn't happen though. TDI meet expectations and hopes on all fronts basically. This is an EP though so if this much fury is all packed in in 20 minutes, I'm sure the full length CD will be insane.
The best way I can describe TDI is if you were to take all the movie quotes and discernable vocals out of Killwhitneydead, you'd, in a sense, have The Damascus Intervention. The breakdowns are intense, there's excellent guitar experimentation, and the intense growling/bellowing vocals are all key ingredients in the stew that is TDI. The title track, Carefully Built/Carelessly Destroyed, steals the show. Breakdowns, a few whining guitar riffs, and amazing double bass drums catapult it to a hard to reach spot. There's not really much else to say about these guys, it's a worthy EP but it's way way way too short. However, if you're looking for nonstop riffage, unrelenting vocals, and insane drumming, look no further than The Damascus Intervention. If you want it cheaper though, Tribunal's website has it for ridiculously cheap. So yeah, TDI has immense potential so we can only hope they don't lose the fire that makes this EP what it is.
