Peggy Lebo is an extraordinary singer, composer, pianist, and songwriter in the tradition of Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan. Her composition, Celebrate, performed by Ellie Mack, reached the Billboard charts at #3, and remained on the charts for over 4 months.

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

    Jawz of Life, an emcee out of Decatur GA, is definitely doing his thing. He's got great production from the likes of Applejack and other deejays who have yet to blow up. The beats vary from complex to classic, and just have a strong overall vibe. His lyrical content is a mix of southern slang, clever wordplay and deep messages. Focusing on such subjects as the lies within to the the music industry to the joys of life, Jawz comes correct. Guest appearances by Witchdoctor and T-Mo among others can't hurt. Don't sleep on this gem.

      Lawrence Santiago's Axl Rose (Guns `n' Roses) meets Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) vocals is a match made in heaven for the hard driving rockin' sound of the band he fronts, American Popular. "Sold Out (The American Way") is a knock-yer-socks off kick ass album with no bullshit allowed. Besides, who has the time for that when you can play as good as these guys do? Nothing new going on here, it is just straight ahead hard rock music minus all the extra polish and glitter that often is added to some records to enhance their sound and cover up what a group really sounds like. Their approach is obviously to get in the studio, play their asses off, record the tracks, then let people listen. It works very well for them. The are like the spontaneous combustion that happens inside an engine, the only difference is there is not a muffler to silence the noise nor anything to keep the flames from coming out.

      Santiago's voice is very flexible for a hard rock singer, he can scream, set a softer pace, or maintain an immense energy level with seemingly no effort. The music must carry him to that lofty level of vocal prowess. The variety of metal played is exciting…rock, hard rock, metal, and all of the above come into the equation offering a variety of listener's different decibel levels. For those that like their music hard, fast and loud or a mish mash of all levels of intensity, it is here on this CD. They never loose their hard-core edge and their sound is comparable to what a live in the studio recording would be.

      "My Therapy" was my favorite, no surprise there, because I need therapy on a regular basis, musical that is. In truth, all the songs were great! If you need to blow the roof off your house or your noggin, this will do the trick. In a world full of sell outs that give up their beliefs and original sound just to make it in the music biz, American Popular do it their own way, the American independent music way." musicdish.com

        Oops, sorry, forgot about the soloists. John Aler has a brighter tenor sound, not as dark as Robert Tear, but the way he handles the recitative text is very similar. Both he an John Ostendorf are a little heavy on the vibrato for my taste, but their diction is not that much skewed by it. J. Ostendorf is a heavy, rich bass, which is striking when you first hear it against Aler's brighter lyric voice. It almost seems wooly, but he steers it away from any Wagnerian tendancies to create a striking bu handsome compliment. Baird is gorgeous- it's that simple. She is not my favorite, but she comes real close. With a voice reminiscent of Emma Kirkby and expression along the lines of Janet Baker, it's a refreshing treat among all these increasing Helden-Sopranos who think that baroque music gives them an excuse to through all delicacy out the window. Over all, this recording is more of a 4 1/2, and I think the most well balanced one may come across.

        The conductor may be no Raymond Leppard, but he's preferable by a great stretch than some of these other "new baroque" recordings out there where everything is a forte marcato allegretto. He maintains the baroque atmosphere, much like Harnoncourt's sound (is this he? I don't know who the conductor is). The chorus also has the baroque sound, but my goodness! Thank God for a chorus with proper vowels and a nice sound! Much better than some Deutsche Grammaphon choruses I've heard. If you like the Monteverdi Choir with Gardiner, you'd probably like this chorus as well (I myself am a choister and soloist specializing in oratorio and other such sacred music).

        The enclosed booklet is too poor. The singers are only good (the best is the soprano). Only good also the conductor . In this way this Haendel's work seems a minor one. Is really so?

              Although I had not heard of Catlin before, I investigated the CD because it is released by the always excellent AD Music. Once again, they have found a winner! Canadian based Catalin's "First Breath" is a sort of Vangelis meets Steve Roach meets World Music, but is highly original and manages to retain its own identity. An impressive debut! I look forward to future recordings from Catalin.
