Kelly Clarkson could have played her American Idol-propelled career much differently, languishing in the role of dippy ingénue or shunting her musical development by leaning too heavily on overnight stardom. Instead she dug in her heels and allowed good sense (or a good manager) to steer, and somewhere Simon Fuller and the rest of the TV gang ought to be smiling. Credit Breakaway, which couldn't be more aptly titled--the sophomore effort represents a seismic split from the thin if pretty debut, Thankful. Here we encounter Clarkson as superstar, with the humility that made her likable on the first disc tucked tightly under her arm. First single and leadoff track "Breakaway" topped the pop charts on arrival, and its rock-friendly thumps, dips, and rolls don't wear out their welcome. Instead, they blend into the firestorm of beats and guitars that is "Since U Been Gone," another shout-it-out rocker. Those songs set the tone for the rest of the disc in all its fury: The innocence is long gone, "Addicted" and "Hear Me" say. The big, expressive voice ringed by the occasional high-pitch trill--the one that prompted millions to get behind her on Idol--doesn't dip entirely off the radar, though. On "Where Is Your Heart" and the stunning live closer "Beautiful Disaster," it's there in full force--a hint, maybe, that despite the wide, smart career step Breakaway represents, her fans come first. -Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars EVERY SONG IS SO GOOD!.......2007-07-20

Its been a long time since I have bought a c.d. where I liked more than two songs. I really like every song.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding effort with a little of everything........2007-07-14

It's funny that, as big of an American Idol fan as I am, I had never bought a CD from an American Idol until now (though I had been given Clay Aiken's first CD as a gift and LOVED it). I'm so glad I bought this one.

We all know Kelly has a powerhouse voice, but this CD shows that her talent has staying power. I have only listened to the CD all the way through 2 or 3 times so far, but I have liked nearly everything I have heard, and I like that there is some variety in the tempo.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing album!.......2007-06-29

it's nothing like breakaway...in my december kelly shows it's not just about the over done poppy tunes but it's about emotions and the music. its a must buy!!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Advice -- Where is the Real Kelly Clarkson?.......2007-06-27

The problem is not so much Kelly Clarkson, it's the record BUSINESS. What happens to people who win a singing competiton, doing songs their OWN way and singing the type of material they do best, is that record executives like Clive Davis tell them, "you've got to sing this in order to sell records." He did it to Fantasia Barrino and I suspect he'll do the same to Jennifer Hudson.

Poor Kelly is yelling her head off about nothing. I've heard that recently, she is fighting back. Good for her. Kelly realizes that if she continues in this vein, she'll look up 25 years from now and realize she has recorded a lot of junk that nobody cares about.

Look at artists like Aretha Franklin. She can proudly look at her discography and find countless gems that have become standards; people are still dancing to "Respect" and other singers are covering "Daydreaming," "Natural Woman," "Until You Come Back To Me," etc. Take Motown. Over 40 years later, everybody, even young people know "Dancing in the Street, " "Come See About Me," "Please Mr. Postman," etc.

Is there anything coming out of today's music that will last more than three months? Kelly needs to sing power ballads and NOT urged to sound like other singers. THIS IS HER CAREER. She wants to make a mark, not just be another girl singer who made some bad records.

4 out of 5 stars Kelly breaks away! 4 stars!.......2007-06-24

I find that this CD is pretty good. It's really catchy but her first was a bit better because there was more soul in her voice and R&B songs.

5 out of 5 stars Breakaway CD.......2007-05-12

Wonderful music by Art Garfunkel. I didn't know he could sing this well !

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-29

It's a very rare occurrence to find a pop album (or an album in any genre for that matter) in which there isn't filler, but this album is one of those rarities. Every song is completely worth it. Granted, there are two or three songs which aren't quite as good as some tracks ("Ragdoll" in particular. It's a good song, but it's dimmed by the two gorgeous songs it's placed between. I find myself skipping past it in favor of "Breakaway") but they still work for the album as a whole.

Closer to perfection than most pop released in the last forty years.

4 out of 5 stars Still a Classic After All These Years..........2007-01-19

Remembered how refreshing Art's recordings were when released in the mid-70s - very unlike the music being written and recorded then. Heard a cut over the Holidays this past year. Immediately went to Amazon to order the CD. In particular, Break Away, Disney Girls and Looking for the Right One bring back a flood of great memories from that decade I lived in San Diego. A solid production.

5 out of 5 stars Breakaway.......2007-01-17

This is a great CD. I bought the vinyl record years ago and have almost worn it out. I decided I needed the CD. The song "Breakaway" is one of my favorite songs.

I bought this album in the 70's and still enjoy to this day. I will be seeing Art in Arizona on Jan 15th, 2007. Cant wait!

5 out of 5 stars Breakaway - KK & Rita review.......2007-01-10

Another one of KK's albums my sister and I purchased when it was originally released. Enjoy Kris & Rita together. Love 'Dakota (the dancing bear). The cassette wore out over the years so had to replace it with the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Kris at His Best.......2006-07-28

Kris Kristofferson wrote great songs. He was a great solo artist. But, when Rita came along, he pulled out his best songs, hired the best studio musicians, and recorded some of the best country duets ever! He went on to be a Hollywood star, but I remember him best singing "Lover Please" and "I'd Rather be Sorry" with his fine-singing squeeze.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Disc.......2006-06-08

The husband and wife team of Kris and Rita were the darlings of the 1970's, and this album, recorded in 1974, was designed to be the follow up to their first collaboration, the excellent Full Moon. Kris and Rita were smart in their joint albums in that they met in the middle: mostly with covers of really great songs.

Apparently most of the songs were set in in the proper key for Coolidge to sing, which kind of made Kristofferson work all that much harder, and the result is some of his best vocals ever.

The song selection here is quite good too, including two of Kristofferson's own more obscure tunes, I'd Rather Be Sorry and I've Got To Have You (which was previously covered by Carly Simon on her Anticipation album). Another gem includes Rain, penned by country great Larry Gatlin.

It's been a long time coming to see the release of this album on CD -- most of us had to settle for vinyl until now. If you're a fan of either Kristofferson or Coolidge, or you're already familiar with their all-too-brief collaborations (they divorced both personally and professionally), you won't be disappointed with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Ecstatic over finding this in CD at Amazon!!!!!!.......1999-05-30

I have literally "worn out" the album I bought many years ago when this was first released. The collaboration of these two artists was a stroke of genius. The way their voices play off each other will lift your spirit!! If you are a fan of either artist, this is a must!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Kelly's magnum opus ? Hoping not !.......2007-04-24

This CD is an example of a real rarity these days... that being a CD that has more than one or two good songs, and this is one that grows on you and gets better every time you hear it. In fact my personal opinion is that the first 10 songs on disc one are worthy of calling this a crossover rock, pop, and even punk album. Not since Heart and Benetar was around has there been such a talent that could do this (IMHO). The girls got pipes! and traverses from sensual to searing with amazing ease.
This definitely outshines her "Thankful" CD by light years! Missy K would do well to use the same producers, songsmiths, and musicians on her next project, as this was surely a winning team.
Don't do like others have and go too easy listening soft now Kelly, keep knocking out some those kicking songs...

5 out of 5 stars Crazzy!!!!!.......2007-04-01

Kelly Clarkson is an amazing singer. Her vocals continue to stun many people worldwide. Her driven passion, hard work and talent continue to blow the minds of people. Kelly is truly a star and is pretty hard to top. Kelly Clarkson truly has talent!

This IMPORT CD contains not only "Breakaway" but a Limited Edition Enhanced CD with 6 Live/Tracks and Remixes and 3 Music Videos and redone photography. This CD really is one of the best Pop CD's out there! The new photography that replaces the old photography is just icing on the cake! Kelly sounds amazing in all of the live tracks and remixes! This is the CD/IMPORT to buy! I reccomend it to everyone {especially if you love pop music and/or are a die hard fan of Kelly!} Rock on KC!

5 out of 5 stars Best Idol Star To Date.......2007-03-20

This album is simply the best! It showcases the great depth, range, and versatility of Kelly's voice within a very diverse menu of songs!! She is a shining star with a velvet voice. Kerry Underwood may eventually out-sell Kelly in total record sales and she is a wonderful talent as well, but Kelly is the bomb! Kerry should probably stick with country, where as Kelly can sing virtually every form of music out there! I'd love to see her record an R&B album and sing it live on tour!

5 out of 5 stars No wonder she won IDOL. A must have CD. Platinum to be sure.......2007-03-10

Kelly hits a gland-slam. I listen to the many hits on MP3 player all the time.

3 out of 5 stars A terrifying experience ..... but pretty good........2007-02-28

Indeed it was, folks. Under some pressure, I took my teenaged daughter Izzie and her friend Georgina to see La Clarkson at the Hammersmith Apollo, London, known to us hard-bitten old fogies as the Hammersmith Odeon. To be surrounded by 5,000 howling teenagers, mainly girls, is an experience far more daunting than that experienced by those brave soldiers when attacked by the Zulu warriors at Rourkes Drift. Very different from Buddy Guy at the same venue too, I can tell you. I honestly had no idea what to expect - the girl can sing, but the runes were baaaaad, man.

I made a real efort to acquaint myself with this CD in self-defence, and came to like it, but as a full-on blare from the undoubtedly amazing lung power of young Kelly. Therefore, I was as well prepared as possible for the concert. Unlike miserable old curmudgeons like Paul Morley in the Daily Telegraph, who only seems to enjoy angst music such as Beth Orton and the dull Radiohead (and no doubt the Fall), I thought that there was much to like and even admire about the performance. Young K sang "Beautiful Disaster" completely unaccompanied and "Because of You", a power ballad, with just two acoustic guitars. Needless to say, the rather bovine, burger-filled teenagers looked at each other in baffled dismay and horror with the unspoken comment, "She's got it wrong", as it did not follow the CD note for note, and they started, like, talking over, like, it, like. But the girl done well and sang with a lot more feeling than on the CD.

Otherwise, it was business as usual, but with a good solid band she rocked away well and certainly has a heck of a voice. As the CD suggests, she is far far better than her Pop Idol tag and is absolutely note perfect. It's a good CD and it was a good performance.

One thing - like so many girls with musical ability, Kelly can't dance and so she sort-of skips and cocks her legs up, much as the wonderful Sonja Kristina in Curved Air used to do. With her vocal ability, she would do well to follow Judie Tzuke's example and keep still a lot more. Her voice is what we all came to hear and she is no beauty by a long way. But the kids loved it, they really did, and the CD has been on non-stop since. A good effort, actually, and so much better than the shocking rubbish that we have produced in the UK lately (although to defend my Motherland, we have not achieved such depths of despair as Fall Out Boy and Bowling for Soup, for example .... or perhaps we have, on second thoughts).

The CD is therefore recommended and you will have had to have been living on the third moon of Saturn not to know the track listing by now. A final point - "Because of you" is a lovely song and it is as good sung to an acoustic guitar as it is with the full blare behind it.

5 out of 5 stars An ingenious musical triumph squandered by the record industry.......2007-01-17

Probably the best example of Industry Rule #4,080 ("record company people are shady...") is Nate Dogg's amazing double album "G-Funk Classics Vol. 1-2." This is a simply brilliant musical product that has never received fair sales or recognition because of poor decisions by record labels. "G-Funk Classics, Vol. 1-2" is in fact two separate albums. The second disc was recorded to be an album between 1995 and 1996 called "The Prodigal Son" on Death Row Records. Had this been released by Suge Knight, I am sure that this would have followed suit as a critical and commercial success in the procession of platinum selling classics like "The Chronic," "Doggystyle," and "Dogg Food," complete with the guest appearances, W-Balls interludes, and all. Of course, the collapse of Death Row around 1996 led to this album being shelved for years, with enough time for Nate to go back to the studio and independently record "The Ghetto Preacher," the first disc of this set, which he finished by 1998. Since time had passed and options were limited, Nate was forced to release these as a double album independently, and thus is this product with the fairly shabby packaging and virtually no promotion, so much that it was out of print within only a few years. Over the years both discs have been frequently and poorly re-released by multiple labels to little success.

But both discs are overall phenomenal. They sound like a full, cohesive album and there's really no flaw in any. On "G-Funk Classics" it's so easy to see why Nate is the world's most sought after hook man. Nate has more style than any three R&B singers combined. He comes across as a seasoned Long Beach gangster, as hard and tough as any gangsta rapper, yet the smooth edge he polishes over each of his productions leaves you with a great impression. The way he tells stories of his dealings in his hometown, interactions with women, philosophies, and problems are convincing and entertaining. As I'm sure you know by now, his voice is also very enticing. His deep, soulful baritone expresses so much emotion. The production is absolutely extraordinary. While Nate calls it G-Funk, the style he really puts across on these discs is not like the Warren G and Snoop Dogg G-Funk that we all think of. Over woozy, soulful beats, Nate's solo songs could be labeled G-Soul. There's not a poor production to be found on either disc, these are the kind of songs that get stuck in your head and you love it. An all-star production team including LT Hutton, Warren G, Teddy Riley, Daz Dillinger, and Soopafly make what is some of the best laidback west coast music I've ever heard. This is the perfect soundtrack for riding slow in the car or chilling out by yourself. People who think that Nate carry an album by himself have no idea. He exhibits enough talent, character, and style that easily fill two discs of ultimate quality. Another piece that makes "G-Funk Classics" so fulfilling is the guest appearances. Each guest appearance is A-list, making for a who's who of west coast hip hop. Guest rappers include Snoop Dogg, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, Tray Deee, Big Syke, and even 2Pac. "G-Funk Classics" is completely unlike anything I've ever heard and if this weren't such a victim of misfortune this would be an undisputed classic among the top of west coast albums. I can't recommend it any higher.

Disc 1, aka "The Prodigal Sun," is the one recorded later. It starts off with one of Nate's best songs ever, "The Hardest Man in Town." This song is produced by New Jack Swing legend Teddy Riley, of Guy and Blackstreet fame, so it's surprising to hear a beat from him that is so lovably woozy with synths and heavy bass with funk instrumentation. It's an excellent production and Nate totally does it justice with a perfect performance. His lyrics speak of "the hardest man in town," the guns that cause and solve problems in lives. The song "G-Funk" has a great musical track too, using funky guitars for a great backing. Nate sings in an emotional joyful style, expressing happiness of seeing "Long Beach on the map" and talking about what music means to him. "First We Pray" is upbeat and hard, discussing the daily dealings in Long Beach. Nate talks about what he would do if he owned the world on "My World," and on the wonderful "Crazy, Dangerous," he makes a soulful performance about the hood mentality over an excellent, droopy beat. "These Days" is another remarkable song, where Nate expresses sadness over the tough state of his life, with great production from Daz. The nice "Bag o' Weed" precedes the slow and bass-heavy "Dirty H...'s Drawers." "Scared of Love" is a softer and enjoyable song, which comes before the phenomenal "Me & My Homies," a joyful anthem about hanging out with his friends, featuring one of 2Pac's last verses. "Because I Got a Girl" shows a lot of style, and the upbeat and ultra-funky "My Money" is another of my absolute favorites. "Never Leave Me Alone" is just wonderful, and the album ends with the conscious "Where Are You Going?" which addresses the state of the world with a great performance.

Either one of these discs is perfect by itself, but the fact that they're together makes it that much better. The second one, the earlier Death Row material, begins with the extra-funky "Who's Playing Games?", a definite highlight. "I Don't Wanna Hurt No More" is a mournful and deep performance. My favorite track on either disc, though, is "Just Another Day," a perfect, fast beat with heavy bass and synths that allows Nate to shine with a great chorus and verses talking about the strains of being a performer. After the good collabo "She's Strange" is the slow and excellent "Almost in Love." "No Matter Where I Go" is fast, soulful, and a lyrical highlight. "Stone Cold" is a very unique and interesting song, which comes before "Friends," a classic featuring Snoop and Kurupt, a g-funk update to the Whodini standard. Snoop and Tha Dogg Pound show up again for "Puppy Love," an archetypical DPG track. "It's Goin' Down Tonight" once again displays Nate Dogg at his best, and the Warren G collabo "Nobody Does It Better" entertainingly speaks of life after "Regulate." The light "Sexy Girl" features Big Syke from Thug Life, and the self explanatory "Dogg Pound Gangstaville" follows. The last song is "Never Too Late," a horn-fueled Nate Dogg signature ballad.

If you take nothing else from this review, know that "G-Funk Classics" is a truly special double album from an amazing talent with amazing production. His next album "Music and Me" is also good but not on the level of this one. Everything goes right on these records. It's an absolute shame that this is so hard to find today. Is it worth the $30-$40? Well, for two full CDs of rare, 5-star material, this reviewer says yes, although that's a steep price to pay for any music. If this comes your way, it would be a crime not to pick it up. "G-Funk Classics" is that remarkable.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT, IVE WANTED THIS FOR 3 YEARS N JUST GOT IT AND ITS GREAT.......2006-04-14

This Album is a certified classic in my opinion. This is a very rare and valualbe album. As far as I know, Nate Dogg has been on countless songs by other artists. Despite his amazing talent as far as I know hes only come out with 2 albums. His newest one is called "Music & Me". I think that that one is alright. No offense 2 him but I definetely think it could have been better. The thing is you really have to have a good appreciation for REAL CLASSIC G-Funk. Ive been loving GFunk for years, so I can really appreciate his music. But if your new to Nate Dogg, and new to the overall G-Funk genre, than I wouldnt recomment listening to "Music & Me", I would reccomend "G-Funk Classics Vol. 1 & 2". If your looking for a mindless, pointless charade of people yelling and jumping around like brainless animals, I mean Crunk music, than you definetely do not want to get this. However if your lookin for a smooth laid back collection of West Coast music than this is the best thing. THis album makes me feel care free, with out stress and also spits some good game too. This is the kind of Cd that makes you feel pimpish as hell and like you THA MAN, haha. Everytrack has something good to offer. THis is a cd you can play all the way through. Its somewhat of an acquired taste. So to those of you who are already fans of the G-FUnk genre, than you all will LOVE THISSSS, thats if you really understand G Funk, and its Roots, influences and history. But to those of you with no idea, its still a pretty good chill album. GET IT GO GET IT GO GET IT, its worth the price, Because nobody has this!!!!! Its rare, go get it babay.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 star Debut from the King of Hooks.......2004-12-23

After first hearing Nate Dogg on Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" in late 1992 he has been my favorite "singer" around. After a long wait for this album to finally drop I'm glad it did because it is one good double disc CD. The first disc was released in 1997 but was very rare and hard to find. Out of the 28 songs on here I skip 5, and 5 are just ok; which means it could have been a classic 18 song album, but it's still a very good one. It has 3 classics and 15 good or great songs on here. The production is great for Nate's voice and is done mostly by Daz Dillinger, Soopafly, Nate Dogg, Warren G, and LT Hutton (all do at least 3 songs) with 2 or 3 others contributiong to a song each. The guests are mostly his old LBC homies. A must have West coast G-Funk album.

5 out of 5 stars very good production.......2004-12-17

this cd collection contains relaxing songs which still allude to gangster rap, although nate dogg may not be directly in the gangster scene. his voice is so unique and the beats are also very unique and well crafted, which is why this album deserves 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Album is the shiznit.......2004-11-09

When I first heard Nate Dogg, on the Chronic back in '92, Doggystyle in '93, Dogg Food, Regulate and Above the Rim in '94, and practically every album, every single year since, I thought this guy is all that. I bought this album when it came out. Simply by accident. I am from Halifax, and these types of albums, don't usually come to the Eastern most point in Canada. But I lucked out.
It was on the shelf, and I am a huge fan of his, so I could not pass it up. This album is smooth and funky, hard and raw, plus, this album is in my top 10 of all time best albums. I have over 400 albums, and I mean when I say, this album really kicks ass.

Both c.d.s are more than worth it. Although when I bought it, it was for $42.99, but I haven't been disappointed about it ever and never will be. You really should buy this, it is well worth what you pay for it, which is now $24.99.

Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!!!.......2007-04-30

This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Great year one compilation.......2007-01-09

This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.

If you are Space:1999 fan, it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2006-07-27

Talk about bringing back memories. The music is crisp-clear & updated. For the 1999 fans-this is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01

Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.

Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.

Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.

However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09

I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!
