Vagabond Heart.......2007-05-14
Something for everyone on this CD and if you love Rod Stewart you will love this mix of music. Starting with the Rhythm of my Heart which gets you singing the corus out loud to the haunting If only at the end you will find every track is worht a listen. My favourite tracks are the foot tapping Motown song and Have I told you lately and the duet with tina Turner It takes two just was the icing on the cake.
Vagabond joy from Rod Stewart.......2006-01-17
This one is Rod Stewart at his best. The voice, the music, and the lyrics. This is a compact and quality collection all over. From the first Track Rythm of my Heart to the last
Track 13. If only, is a rear joy to listen to this CD. Some tracks are not realy up there in rock and roll heaven, so it have some minor fault to put the "masterpiece mark" on it. Nevertheless. The great Tracks on this one realy shines, like the slow rock and roller called Broken Arrow (Track 3). The voice of Rod Stewart realy fit`s in on this one, and a realaxable "wall of sound" with the right instrumental "plink and plonk " sounds in the back ground. Track 4 It takes two The duet with Tina Turner kicks off and gives you a rock and roll song to clap your`e hands and stamp your`e feet to the groovy rythm and vocal. A real "heartstarter" this one. Anyway my favoruite on this one is Track 7 The Motown Song. It`s a homage to the Motown greatness from back then. From the beginning to the end this one has the right feel and groove all trough. It`s a very enthusiastic song, which realy shines on every note. In other words. It has the right temperature for
feeling happy with a smile on your face, after the listen. The rest is a fine mix with ballad and more uptempo songs, with track 10 Have I told you lately, as a stand out in the "ballad department". Track 12 Downtown Train, written by Tom Waits has hit potensial, and Stewart does it in his own way, and there`s nothing wrong with that, so long it has his creative input stamped all over. To sum-up this is Vagabond joy from Rod Stewart . One of his best CD, ever.
Little Known Gem In Rod Stewart 's Repertoire.......2004-06-02
After seeing Rod Stewart live in concert recently, I went in search of "It Takes Two" which had brought the house down at his show. Although I own many of his CD's, this cut was not on any of the ones I had. Although I bought it strictly for this Rod/Tina Turner duet, I found many more "lesser known" songs I thoroughly enjoy on this one. "Rebel Heart" is classic Rocking Rod for those of us who first fell in love with him in the 1970's. The soulful "When A Man's In Love" is also alone worth the cost of the CD. Equally enjoyable are the classic "Rhythm of My Heart" and his delightful homage to Motown with "The Motown Song." I've been playing this one over and over and pondering why it never achieved the success of his other albums.
Originally released in 1991, it was his 18th album and is dedicated to his father who had recently passed away. It was his father that had the foresight to give him a guitar on this 14th birthday instead of the model railway equipment Rod requested. Rock music owes a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Robert Joseph Stewart for such an inspirational gift.
Rod Stewart regaining his strenght.......2003-10-19
It doesn't come close to the magnificent "Every Picture Tells A Story", but compared to Rod Stewart's awful 80s output, "Vagabond Heart" is actually a pretty strong and quite diverse album.
The production is a bit slick, but Stewart's performance is soulful and sincere, and "Vagabond Heart" includes a great cover of Runrig's "Rhythm Of My Heart", a couple of very good originals ("Rebel Heart", "When A Man's In Love"), the radio-friendly duet with Tina Turner, "It Takes Two", a fine rendition of Van Morrison's beautiful ballad "Have I Told You Lately", and a swinging rendition of Larry John McNally's "The Motown Song".
"Vagabond Heart" is quite heavily influenced by soul music (and less by disco, fortunately), and even though it contains a lot of "filler", there are also several really good songs here.
Worth picking up for Rod Stewart-fans (unless they're only fans of his disco-period in the 80s).
3 1/2 stars.
A great album by Rod Stewart.......2002-12-02
This is a really good album. I can't compare it to any of his other albums, because this is the only one of his that I have. He has one of the greatest voices in the music industry. I would have to say that the best songs on this album are "Rithym of my Heart", "The Motown Song", "Have I Told You Lately", and "If Only". I like the song "It Takes Two", but, Tina Turner kinda ruins it for me. Don't get me wrong, she's a great singer usually, but on this track, she just doesn't sound right. He really should have found someone else for the duet. Rod just sings so much better than her in this song that she seams to be out of place. Aside from that, this CD is very good. I was actually surprised of how good it was. It's one of my favorites. If you like Rod Stewart, just get the album, it's worth it.

Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13
This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.
A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25
This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!
Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12
It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."
An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18
The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

While Frazey Ford of the Be Good Tanyas spent the year raising her new baby, band mate Trish Klein had time to record a second record with her other group. Like on their first record, Po' Girl takes the Tanyas' kitchen-sink mix of rustic sounds and adds a blues tinge. Musicians have always fused music from different genres, but now a full generation has grown up barely aware of musical boundaries. The age bracket that spawned Po' Girl is equally at home with country, rock, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and punk. They are even able to seamlessly add a rapper to the half-time country tune "Take the Long Way" without a hint of preciousness-a rapper that name-checks Patti Smith no less. --Michael Ross

Po' Girl's Lilting Melodies Warm the Heart.......2007-01-23
I just love this CD. Po' Girl has penned some beautiful songs that leave you humming for days afterward.
Before Po' Girl came about, I was a huge fan of The Be Good Tanyas for years, having caught their shows in Vancouver, Los Feliz & Hollywood.
I'm so glad the members of that band joined their new friends and that they're all still playing and harmonizing together after major life changes kept them from recording for a spell. Take it from another mom, having kids will derail you for awhile, but it's lovely and very much worth the ride.
I hope to hear much more from the angelic and rootsy voices that make up Po' Girl. They are a genuine gem among so many plastic, formulaic bands that are churning out forgetable CDs in the music world.
Po' Girl. Astounding.......2006-07-19
Well. I stumbled onto Po' Girl on emusic, and am just blown away by this, their second album. Can't stop listening to "Take the Long Way, with CR Avery rapping gently through the middle of the song. Bliss.

Welsh passion/English art songs.......2007-06-17
Bryn Terfel brings astonishing energy, not to mention eardrum-rattling dynamic range, to these English art songs. Frankly, his passionate, sometimes over the top interpretations work for me, injecting virility into songs that could easily become effete in the hands of a more traditionally "English" singer.
As always, DG's sonics are superior. Where a few others have found overly processed sound I simply find superlative engineering that manages to handle Terfel's sometimes overwhelming voice while still capturing the wide range of colors and timbres he injects into every piece.
Malcolm Martineau, by the way, provides first rate accompaniment, also captured with warmth and brilliance by DG's Tonmeister.
"A great lower baritone voice.......incredible songs,".......2006-07-19
Bryn Terfel has one of the most amazing voices. To top it all he has this real passion when he sings. This is a must have for ANY music fan...
The song selections are great....wonderful classical tunes. Many of the lyrics are by Robert Louis Stevenson who, well, we know his reputation.
My favorite song: Whither Must I Wander?
ENGLISH ART SONGS..........2006-07-17
Terfel does a fine job with these pieces.
Especially fine are the Vaughan Williams and Butterworth songs.
Perfect for the male music student.......2005-08-17
As a music student I have found this cd to be a priceless tool. With the wide range of artists Terfel has used in this collection it is a great way for begginers to start to explore wonderful pieces of fantastic composers that would otherwise be unknown. While many would be familiar with the NYSSMA standard "The Vagabond" (which is beautifully presented) I hope that future teachers and professionals would take the time to search through the rest to find songs to not only raise interest in the different composers but feed their passion for the art of music.
~Kyle
Best Recording.......2005-05-09
This Blend of English art song is fantastic a must have for any serious bass-baritone. Not only the always amazing and tremendous interpretation of song by Terfel but especially in the Finzi and Williams do we finally, I reitterate Finally, hear the story of the Young composers passion come out! Also another plus to Terfel, we hear the best bass baritone sound that I think I have ever heard from him! I have listened to every CD that he has made to date including the new silent noon and this is still my most frequently used selection. Also Coach accompanist take a listen to the way that Martineau plays this music it is infactuating! If you buy a Bryn Terfel CD I would reccomend this one!

Customer Reviews:
Few Could Sing Neapolitan Songs like Lanza.......2007-03-13
Neapolitan music is very special and unique. It requires singing from the soul and heart and a voice that articulates the language and its many nuances
Mario Lanza was not Neapolitan but he mastered the dialect and the music and the lyrics in a way that few have been able to articulate. As always, Lanza gives a wonderful performance on this album which does not need or deserve the pieces from the Vagabond King.
The greatest voice of this century and the twentieth century comes out in this splendid work. Just having the Neapolitan songs sung by Mario is worth the cost. I recommend it highly for lovers of the best and brightest, like Lanza was.
Canto Neapolitane.......2006-02-08
This was the last album Lanza recorded in which he was able to muster all his vocal splendor and create what remains perhaps the most passionately interpreted set of Neapolitan songs ever recorded by any tenor in history ( a close second being recordings by di Stefano, Corelli and Sergio Franchi).
Lanzas diction is uncannily Neapolitan, which is no mean feat considering that the Neapolitan dialect is all but impossile to duplicate by anyone not born and raised in the region. Even such greats as Corelli and del Monaco had problems with it and the much over-rated Pavarotti never even came close.
Lanza nailed it!
The song selection is great with the exception of Funicula...that song doesn't work no matter who sings it.
My personal favs are Dichitenchello Vuie, Voce la Notte, and Passione...Canta'p'me being a close second.
Lanzas gift for pouring his every emotion into his singing really comes forth on these songs. Moreso even than on any of his operatic selections which are peerless in their own right.
However; in my mind, Lanza always did his best work on the Neapolitan songs.
The songs from the soundtrack of the film "The Vagabond King" are about as lame as can be. They are right along the usual line of Hollywood junk which Lanza recorded too much of in his short career.
Thus the 4 star rating. I turn the CD off once the Neapolitan stuff is over with.
The only other major distraction here is not due to anything Mario could have controlled or done differently. It's in that that RCA decided to release this album in this then newly discovered "stereo surround" format, which was nothing more than overblown reverb effects. This worked well for a thin voiced Elvis, but it didn't fare to well with this type of material or Marios larger than life voice.
In the end, this is, and always will be a collection of the finest sung Neapolitan songs ever recorded.
Bravo Commendatore Lanza! Bravo!
GREAT!!!!!.......2005-11-26
If your gong to get one Mario Lanza CD or CD Set get the Mario Lanza Collection, But if you want to get one more, get this one, Mario Lanza At His Best. This is one CD (not a set like the collection) which contain many beautiful Italian folk songs and then competes with the songs from Lanza's Movie, The vagabond king. Lanza sings wonderful renditions of Funiculi Funicula, Dicitencello Vuie (just beautiful), Maria Mari (my Grandmothers favorite song), Voce e' Notte, Canta pe' Me, O Surdato Namurato, Comme Facette Mammeta?, Santa Lucia Luntana, Fenesta Che Lucive, Ta Ca Nun Chiagne, 'Na Sera 'e Maggio, and Passione (Which is just beautiful. Then the CD moves to the songs form the vagabond King; Drinking Song, Some day, Love Me Tonight, only A Rose, Tomorrow, Nocturne, Song of the vagabonds and Finale all well done. Judy Rasking sings with Mario on Some day, Only A Rose, Tomorrow, and Finale.
world's greatest tenor.......2005-10-29
Mario Lanza was a singer who possessed an absolutely glorious voice. soaring and beautiful, with a deep rich tone. He sings exclusively in his native Italian language on these recordings and the record is in two parts. the first 12 songs are more operatic in structure, containing moody, solemn passages in which Lanza's voice excels in the passion and romantic solitude that this kind of music is so well at expressing. the remaining eight tracks are a series called The Vagabond King and it's song structures are a little bit more of the old Hollywood variety, beginning with the cheery "Drinking Song" (which was a high rated hit in the u.s.). Mario is joined by soprano Judith Raskin on 4 of the songs and his singing is in English for these songs. this is a great introduction to the world of this fabulous singer.
I've fallen in love again.......2003-01-12
I had this as a LP record many years ago, and was absolutely thrilled to find the CD. I had always loved Lanza's voice, but I now realize that he was without a doubt one of the best tenor voices of the century. His ability to sing so many different types of songs is astounding. His voice is strong, filled with emotion and in some of the songs you can hear that he is hugely enjoying himself. What an incredible pity that he died at such a young age and was never able to fulfill all that he could have been.

A mixed bag of romantic offerings.......2001-12-17
BMG's Lanza collections are usually a mixed bag, and this album of love songs is no exception. Interspersed with some magnificent performances are an assortment of the good, the bad, and the mediocre. Part of the problem, I suspect, is that BMG simply doesn't appreciate what treasures it has buried in its recording vaults. It's enough to bring back Lanza from the grave, swearing in High C (as Time Magazine once tut-tutted) at the injustice of it all.
Lanza, in fairness to BMG, was an inconsistent performer. In the earlier part of his brief career, he had a tendency to sing sharp, and at times his approach to various arias and songs lacked sensitivity. That's not to say he couldn't get it right. At his best he was extraordinary, combining one of the most powerful voices on record with just the right degree of melting mezza voce and a dazzling array of vocal colours. His sense of phrasing was, as Enrico Caruso Jr noted, "instinctively right", and his ability to get into the heart of a song was unquestionable. Even at his roughest, his singing was usually compelling, and one could never label any of his performances "boring".
The bad recordings generally fall into three periods of his life: the Coca-Cola Radio shows of 1951-52, the disastrous Lanza on Broadway album of 1956, and the illness-affected stereo remakes of his Christmas Carols and Student Prince albums, both recorded in 1959, the year of his death. The present CD includes material from the first two periods.
The "Coke" shows, as I've opined in a number of other reviews, produced some amazing performances of both arias and love songs. Unfortunately, however, lack of rehearsal time coupled with poor arrangements often led to the kind of wild, unrestrained singing that Lanza's detractors love to attack (while at the same time overlooking his great performances). On this CD, a number of Coke recordings were released for the first time: Danny Boy; My Wild Irish Rose; Neapolitan Love Song; and Torna a Surriento. The first two are lovely, notwithstanding a poor ending on Danny Boy and some uncertain moments in the tenor's lower register in this song. Victor Herbert's Neapolitan Song contains some piercingly sharp singing, a rough ending and some agreeable mezza voce. Torna a Surriento is too fast, too unpolished and not a patch on the piano accompaniment-only version that Lanza recorded three years later for the movie Serenade.
Among the other Coke selections is the sublime Memories, and the alternately touching and thrilling I'll Be Seeing You, with a B Flat climax that will knock your socks off. Wanting You is rough and exciting in equal measure - ditto the powerhouse Ah Sweet Mystery of Life with its ridiculously fast tempo.
Two songs from the ill-fated Lanza on Broadway album have been inexplicably included, though it must be said that at least these represent the better moments from this dreadful session. You'll Never Walk Alone contains more sharp singing, uneven rhythm and a certain bleariness, while the Borodin-adapted And This Is My Beloved is alternately belted and seductive. Incidentally, Lanza recorded a superior version of You'll Never Walk Alone for his Coke Shows; this is featured on the CD of the same name.
The real highlights for me are the immortal Serenade from The Student Prince; a thrilling Only a Rose (recorded three months after the Lanza on Broadway session and featuring a completely different voice); the aforementioned My Wild Irish Rose & I'll Be Seeing You and a mature rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria. Fans will also enjoy Arrivederci, Roma, and the ubiquitous Be My Love.
All in all an enjoyable hour, but if only more thought had been put into some of the selections...
The best tenor ever.......2001-03-01
Mario Lanza is indeed my favourite of all tenors either living or not. I must have almost everything he ever recorded. This album has a whopping 24 tracks including 5 previously unreleased recordings, which make this a must for any true fan of Lanza. This album has some of his most romantic songs, mostly from stage and film. You won't find any opera here, which is fine, there's plenty of his other albums that have that. These are songs that are guaranteed to stir your heart and soul while Mario's voice will melt them. This is a must-have and at this price there's no reason not to have it.
The greatest singer of all time!.......2000-06-29
This is one of the greatest compilations of Tenor Mario Lanza, The Voice of the Century, ever made. Mario Lanza had such a broad, well focused voice and he is represented to good measure here on songs like "Wanting You", "Neapolitan Love Song", and "Without a Song". On these selections one hears how the Lanza voice had a largeness, depth, and warmth from the bottom all the way to the very top. One will never hear songs like "O Danny Boy", "My Wild Irish Rose", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Torna Surriento", "O Solo Mio", and "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" sung any better or with more feeling. My favorite on this CD, "And this is my Beloved" from Kismet displays the full Lanza Range. This, in my opinion, is one of the greatest single recordings ever made. Here Mario sings the most melting pianissimo and builds to an exciting, full bodied, heart stopping fortissimo High B flat. What passion! The particular recording of "Only a Rose" on this album has been regrettably absent from the catalogs for quite some time. It is a shame too, because Lanza makes this Vagabond King selection sound free and effortless like only Mario Lanza could. Lanza takes the listener through a guided tour, so speak, of truly the greatest singing the world has ever heard. After hearing the final selection, "You'll Never Walk Alone", there won't be a dry eye in the house. This, along with the "Don't Forget Me" Lanza CD, is one of the greatest single CD collections ever put together of Mario, or anyone else for that matter. Lanza was the greatest singer of all time and this is a must have album. The sooner you own this one, the better.

Don't listen to that review about Mos..........2006-07-07
That is the worst way to go about reviewing a Cd: by comparing to something completely different, a la Mos' "The New Danger."
Honestly, the reviews are supposed to be about Speech's crappy CD, not how you feel it's superior to another CD and how you feel the artist wish he could have a CD like that. If that's how you review CD, books, etc, then step away from the keyboard.
You have no way of knowing if Mos wanted to make a CD like this one.
Speech Delivers.......2006-05-19
Speech delivers with his best work since the wonderful Hoopla album. Why are the best artists so underrated? That feel good vibe, intelligent song writing coupled with an uncanny ability to rapp, Speech is at the peak of his powers. Favorite tracks, Scandal, No One Like You, and Shine. This is what Prince would be doing in 2006 if he wasn't a spent force. Soul, rapp or hip hop lovers, grab it!
Speech scores with The Vagaond.......2005-12-10
The Vagabond finds Speech (from hip hop pioneers Arrested Development) in fine form. Standout tracks include Braided Hair, Scandal and Gone Away, a moving and emotional tribute to Speech's brother. This CD is an example of the territory contemporary hip hop artists should and could be travelling. It's a breath of fresh air, and worthy of a listen by anyone who finds the demeaning focus on bling and bimbos stifling.
BEST CD ALL YEAR.......2005-11-29
This CD is the best thing that has come out this year. Speech has done it again. It is so refreshing to hear hip/hop that is not just talking about bling and degrading women. This is a CD that the whole family can listen to.
Don't Sleep On This Great CD!.......2005-11-01
Vagabond is the latest CD from Speech, the lead vocalist from the Grammy Award winning group Arrested Development.
Vagabond by Speech is hands down one of the best CD's of 2005. Vagabond can be compared to John Legend's debut, Kindred's latest CD, and Common's BE. Speech makes some serious grown folks music on this CD. It's really a great CD and can't even really be compared with any of the other hip-hop or rap CD's out right now. Speech blends rap, R&B, and spoken word on this CD.
The CD opens up with the song "Braided Hair" which features the little heard from lately artist Neneh Cherry. Speech and Neneh hooked up to write the song due to their involvement with 1 Giant Leap. This song is followed up by the funky song "Scandal." Speech is rapping in this song but almost sounds like a sped up spoken word artist and he even sings a little on the hook. Speech sings on the song "No One Like You," which is a really awesome song. "Shine," is a very funky, soulful song in which Speech almost sounds like Prince or DeAngelo. "Walking On The Sun," ends with a really neat little rap. It's also a great love song. From start to finish Vagabond is a great CD.
Speech is singing about some real life stuff on this album. The main themes addressed on this album are family and relationships. Speech isn't very political on this album. It's a very grown up album. Fans of Arrested Development probably also enjoy this CD because musically Vagabond sounds like it could be an Arrested Development album in some ways because of course he is the lead vocalist of the group. Couples and people looking for something different will really appreciate this CD. Speech really needs to be recognized for Vagabond come Grammy time.

Come along for the ride.......2006-10-05
Original, jazzy, klezmer-based belly dance opera gypsy music from the coolest and most twisted exiled circus ever to run guns into Spain. Like Kurt Weill buying 3 Mustaphas 3 a glass of absinthe in a bar on Sesame Street. Fun, fresh, wacky, kitschy, catchy, and unpredictable. The lyrics are imaginative (well, the ones in English are), the playing solid, the vocalists are cool, and the whole thing great.
