Stories from the City
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2000
She may not break new ground with Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, but Polly Jean Harvey proves one thing: she sure knows how to tend to her plot. Hard-rocking, guitar-driven numbers, mesmerizing vocal wordplay, and plenty of noisy atmospherics prove that Harvey is still the queen of rock-noir. --Jason Verlinde --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea--the sixth album from the most incendiary female British performer to emerge in the 1990s--is as powerful a record as any Polly Jean Harvey has made. Masterfully striking a balance between her blues-folk roots, avant-leanings, and soaring pop sensibility, it serves as a summary of Harvey's prior achievements. The abrasive, jagged guitars hark back to her fiery 1992 debut album, Dry, on the ballistic yet anthemic opener, "Big Exit," while the dreamy,... read more --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Re-Worked.......2007-03-29
Already familiar with PJ Harvey and owning her first 3 albums, it was really difficult to desribe this album upon first listening. It seemed like she had come full circle though, it had all of the familiar elements I had come to expect from this incredible musician/songwriter but it also seemed completely different and new....all at once. It was a paradox but a fantastic paradox nonetheless and it still is hard to describe. It might just be a maturing, I am not sure but whatever it is , this is good music, fabulous songwriting and excellent production. However, I urge one to listen to her earlier albums first in order to get an idea of the progresson of Harvey's music and I think it may put this album into correct persepctive. Or, you could just listen to this album and revel in its uniqueness and ponder why everything else out there is just so bad, wishing you could hear more music like this instead.
The Finest Album from One of Rock's Divine Talents.......2007-02-06
Polly Jean Harvey is one of the biggest chameleons in modern rock. From the noisy art-rocker of 1992's "Dry", to the enraged punk of 1993's "Rid of Me", to the hard-rockin' blues mama of 1995's astonishing "To Bring You My Love", and to the solemn sorceress of 1998's great but rather disappointing "Is This Desire?". She changes colors yet again in the 2000 release of "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea", and trust me, it's a big change. Instead of all of the metaphors of albums like "Is This Desire?", she's more instrested in being happy and telling the world about it. When I first listened to this, I didn't quite warm up to it. Where were all the atmospheric keyboard riffs and religious metaphors that made her other albums so fascinating?. But then I listened to "Big Exit", the brilliant, rousing opener of the album and the best song of her entire career. "Big Exit" made me realize that "Stories" shows that Harvey isn't a dour, dark Euro-goth, she is a talented musician and songwriter that just decided to go for a change of pace. "Stories" is P.J. Harvey's most brilliant album and is definetly worth buying. 2004's vulnerable "Uh Huh Her" is another example of this chameleon's different colors. You should buy that too.
Her best? Just maybe.......2007-01-12
I didn't like this album when it came out. Why? I'm not sure. It took me a while to really warm up to it, but now that I have, I think it may be her finest work yet. I never thought I'd like anything as much as her first two albums, but I must now give props to this mature, exciting, biting and gorgeous album.
Happiest PJ Harvey Album.......2006-09-02
This is one of the best albums in Polly Jean's oeuvre. For the first and only time, she reveals the happiness and hearbreak of a relationship, which is the main concept behind the song cycle. As a result, the production is unusually polished with soothing guitar textures and more relaxed vocals. Her next album, "Uh Huh Her," goes back to the stripped down indie rock from her earlier works. She begins with the brilliant high-voltage assault of "Big Exit" and quiets down in the gorgeous "One Line." PJ Harvey ends the album on an ambiguous note, signaling an end to her reverie in New York. Overall, I recommend this album as the most accessible and second only to "To Bring You My Love."
Wow. Just wow........2006-08-25
This album rocks. All over, it's great. PJ Harvey is one of the most influential artists, at least I think so. There isn't a "bad" track on here, they're either great, good, or not your favorite. There's a good mix of fast and slow songs, and it pretty much goes from fast, mid-tempo, slow, fast, slow. The single, "This is Love" is the most single-worthy song on the album. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that lyrics like "I want a pistol/ I want a gun/ I'm scared, baby/ I wanna run/ This was crazy/ Give me the gun" are family friendly. Instead, "This is love/ This is love/ That I'm feeling/" was chosen.
1. Big Exit: 10/10
2. Good Fortune: 9/10
3. A Place Called Home: 9/10
4. One Line: 8.5/10
5. Beautiful Feeling: 8/10
6. The Whores Hustle and The Hustlers Whore: 9.5/10 a bit heavier than the previous ones. Be prepared to sing along to the lyrics.
7. This Mess We're In: 10/10 Thom Yorke is amazing.
8. You Said Something: 8/10
9. Kamikaze: 11/10 The best song is also the heaviest.
10. This Is Love: 9/10
11. Horses In My Dreams: 8.5/10 Where the album slows down.
12. We Float: 9/10 Good song, but a great way to end the album.

With Old Mr. Mackle Hackle, Gunnar Madsen offers up some of the freshest, funniest, and most inventive fare in the ever expanding crop of children's music. "Summertime Is Here" is a bluesy romp in celebration of that venerable season and "Born to Chew (We Eat Meat)" is a carnivorous-dinosaur spoof on '50s rock. "Chicken Road" is a talking country blues that'll leave listeners in stitches as Madsen tells of chicken lipstick, chicken donuts, chickens playing guitars, and just about every other brand of rooster and hen. Horns and squawky keys chronicle the "Elephant Traffic Jam," "Selling Lemonade" is a straight-up folk tune begging for campfire sing-alongs, and the rhyming title track bounces and boings away, lodging itself firmly into one's noggin. Fleshed out with rootsy and faux-classical instrumentation, Madsen's lyrics are smart, sassy, and right on target, operating on multiple levels, pleasing both adult and juvenile audiences. Winning and witty! --Paige La Grone

Fun, Fun, Fun.......2006-03-26
My kids and I have been listening to this on and off for over 5 years and it is still fresh and makes us laugh and feel good. We love "Ants in my Pants" too. This guy is a genius.
This is the best kids CD ever!.......2001-02-21
I am the mother of twin 2 1/2 year old boys so we listen to alot of music in the car. This CD is unbelievably entertaining (which says alot considering I have to listen to it over and over!). Our boys love it and so adults. We find ourselves singing "I'm just a tiny mosquito" all the time which is the kids favorite. Madsen's lyrics are hilarious for the ault listeners, and inventive and comical for children. He is like the Jim Carey of children's music. Some songs are making fun of opera, others jazz, still others are wistful. He should win some award for this one. A must if you have to have children's music! And guess what, you can throw away all those other dreadful tapes away!
Delightful wordplay and whimsey for young listeners........2000-04-07
Old Mr. Mackle-Hackle showcases word play and whimsy that will delight young listeners of all ages. Composer and performer Gunnar Madsen draws upon his extensive background in classical, folk, and pop music to create lively and totally fun recordings which includes Summertime is Here (3:19); Chicken Road (3:38); I'm a Little Twerp (2:17); Born to Chew/We Eat Meat (3:03); The Dinosaur Song (3:11); Elephant Traffic Jam (1:07); The Evelyn Way (2:53); Tiny Mosquito (2:24); Selling Lemonade (2:51); Old Mr. Mackle Hackle (3:45); Flying, Flying (3:38); Tiny Mosquito-reprise (0:19). Old Mr. Mackle-Hackle is a delightful addition to any family, school or community library children's music collection.
Old mr. mackle hackle.......2000-02-08
I am a mother of two small sons(2 and 4). We have listened to Gunnars music since they were little.I love it. My boys love it. My husband loves it. Our imaginations fly with every song, we have a blast together and just sing sing sing!
Let's all sing along!.......2000-01-13
Both my kids took to this CD instantly. I think they have been listening to it almost non-stop since we got it.
When we are away from the music it has been a pleasure hearing the 6-year old singing Elephant Traffic Jam and the 2-year old sing "... ha ha hee the Evelyn way!..."
Unlike many children's songs that get trapped in your brain and won't come out until you think you'll go postal. Gunnar's songs are wonderful works that I enjoy having banging around in my skull.
This album is great for adults and kids a like.

AT LEAST 1 OTHER GOT IT RIGHT!!!.......2005-12-31
th previous reviewer got it spot th fu@k on!!!
K-Rino is th most precocious, unique and preposterously superb Rapper i have encountered! Gza, Rakim an esp Eminem can suk my glock, i dont care 4 ANY of those drastically overrated pop p@$sy punx but Rino even immolates th incredible Bootleg an Dre Dog!!! his Raps are so contrived and elaborate yu simply can not predict what he will say next! also has an extraordinary signiture style all of his own! Dre Dog had something similar but no way th vocabulary and excessive complexity of K-Rino! Bootleg's-"Death Before Disshonesty" album is th only thing i kno that can dispute K-Rino's throne but not enough 2 bump his iyc cream an milk gorging ass out of it!!! bow th f@*k down!!!
OOO NOW BODY RATED THIS??!!!.......2004-12-22
I AM ABOUT TO MAKE A VERY BOLD STATEMENT. ONE IM SURE YOU`VE HEARD OVER AND OVER AGAIN. BUT WHEN I SAY THIS I WANT YOU TO FORGET YOUR POP CORPORATE RATING SYSTEM AND ADHERE TO STRICT EXAMINATIONS ON LYRICAL SKILL AND DELIVERY. I HAVE CONSIDERED ALL OTHER LYRICIST WHICH I AM GREATLY FAMILIAR WITH. OK. YOU READY.
K-RINO IS THE GREATEST RAPPER WHO EVER LIVED.
YES BETTER THAN RAKIM THOUGH HE`S A KING. BETTER THAN RZA THOUGH HE IS EASILY ON OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD. EASILY BEATS EMINEM THOUGH HE IS A MONSTER. THOUGH THIS WORK WAS DONE YEARS AGO IT IS STILL LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF ITS TIME AND I AM STILL PONDERING AND GETTING SOME OF THE LYRICS HE SAID ON THIS ALBUM AND HE CONTINUES TO DO IT DESPITE HIS INVISIBILITY IN A MATERIALISTIC AND DILUTED RAP INDUSTRY.
TAKE A CHANCE AND BUY THIS IS YOU GIVE A DAMB ABOUT RAP AND OR HIP HOP AND SEE WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT.
