Most of the essentials from his peak years.......2004-05-14
Bryan Ferry, either solo or as lead singer with Roxy music, made the top ten of the British charts in the seventies and eighties with fifteen singles and an extended play EP. He also had several other hits so they couldn't all be included here.
Bryan wrote a lot of his own material but he also recorded some distinctive covers. Two of the songs here date back to the thirties. Of course, most people remember the Platters for Smoke gets in your eyes, but it was actually written in 1934. The other oldie, These foolish things, was originally an American number one hit for Benny Goodman in 1936. Bryan eventually emphasized his love for such songs by recording a whole album of them later in his career. Other distinctive covers include Jealous Guy (John Lennon), which provided Bryan with his only UK number one hit, and A hard rain's a gonna fall (Bob Dylan).
Most of the essentials are here including all the songs already mentioned plus Let's stick together, Virginia plain, Love is the drug, Dance away, Angel eyes, Oh yeah and More than this - are here. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that apart from some of the minor hits, Over you (a top five UK hit) and the UK top ten hits Price of love, This is tomorrow and Pyjamarama are also missing.
A single CD cannot do full justice to Bryan's music but this is a strong collection.
"More than this"? Of course!!! But not in this CD..........2003-11-25
First of all, I like Roxy/Ferry, but I can't believe this cd does not include wonderful tracks like "Lover" (remember MIAMI VICE?), "My only love" and "Bete noire". However, it has the rest of the good ol' ones. Buy it
The best of many Roxy/Ferry collections........2003-10-20
"Bryan Ferry" once sang with "Roxy Music", and between them there are many collections. "Bryan Ferry" himself has no "best of", that I'm aware of, other than an album of his ballads. "Roxy Music" has one, but no "Ferry" solo stuff on it. Then there are a few "Roxy/Ferry" collections around. The 20 track "Street Life", which is pretty good, but out of print. The "Ultimate Collection", which is 15 tracks, not as good, and out of print. Another entitled "More Than This", which is roughly the same as this one, and out of print. And Finally this one, which is also called "More Than This", and IN print, but is an import. These are all fairly similar, in length and song selection, but the others you may have to search more for. But between them all, I think this one has the best "Roxy Music", and "Bryan Ferry" songs, just at an import price. So you could get this, or look through the used stores in town for the others. Or you could always just get "Avalon" from "Roxy Music", or "Boys & Girls" from "Bryan Ferry". Luckily, it's all incredibly cool.
NEW DIMENSIONS IN ROCK.......2003-05-21
Roxy Music was very innovative for their time and their sound progressed with every album. In particular, they used the synthesizer in a new way to create compelling textures in their fresh take on art rock. Much variety is displayed here in great rockers like Street Life and the frenzied pop of their first major hit Virginia Plain. There is also the majestic buzz of Love Is The Drug and the slick croon of Dance Away and More Than This, another take on plastic soul? Avalon impresses with its mature lyricism while their interpretation of the classic Smoke Gets In Your Eyes has stood the test of time very well. But my favourite is Ferry's bizarre version of Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, a truly amazing tour de force of hypnotic beats and weird vocals giving the song a complete make-over. This is a truly outstanding collection of songs and though it may not please all the hardcore fans, it provides the cream of Roxy and Ferry's hit singles, making it the perfect anthology for exploring the man and the band.

The selection of tracks for this single-disc retrospective works on the premise that Roxy Music group records and frontman Bryan Ferry's solo efforts were pretty much of a whole. As the distance grew from the time founding member Brian Eno left the fold, that was more and more the case. (Eno quit Roxy with the release of the band's second album, 1973's For Your Pleasure; about the same time, Ferry put out his first spin-off collection, These Foolish Things .) Commonly dubbed art-rockers (in large part because their flirtations with glam, prog, and something approximating mood music for moderns made them tough to categorize more specifically), Roxy's music has aged far better than that of most of their '70s contemporaries, thanks to inventive playing and Ferry's elegant persona and graceful vocals. Granted, this isn't the thorough retelling of the Roxy/Ferry chronicles that devotees long for, but it's a fine primer for more casual Rox fans. --Steven Stolder

Timeless Music.......2006-02-12
Some songs I skip, but most I really enjoy. They have a sensual flow and sound that is inimitable. Classic.
beware, not all songs listed are on this version.......2005-08-16
A decent selection of songs, but beware: The songs "Your Painted Smile" and "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" are not on this version. I learned this the hard way...I sent it back to Amazon, explaining that they are referring to the other version that sells for $37.99, but they sent it right back to me. So if you are buying for those songs, skip this disc.
There's More Than This CD can offer.......2002-09-28
This CD is a 19 tracks taken from both Bryan Ferrys solo career and the ten year career of Roxy Music.
The track selection as another user said is quite predictable especially when it comes to the Roxy Music selections but where as the Streetlife CD still is a good sampler of Roxys songs, it at the same time is somewhat outdated when it comes to the best of Ferrys solo works.
More Than This does some work on that by including a track grabbed from Bete Noire and Taxi but even then the 'best of' title isn't always true. The 'best of' title is more of an individuals opinion than a fact because while it may be called 'The Best of Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music' too much of Ferrys strongest solo songs are left off particularly the enigmatic New Town, the shimmering The Right Stuff & the danceable classic Limbo. There is an import version of this CD that does include the beautiful Your Painted Smile that is not included on the US version and it's a pity because the US has been deprived of so much great music. Another thing about this CD that makes it so flawed is that it doesn't include anything from In Your Mind or Bride Stripped Bare.
On the other hand it does include a track from the 30s oriented As Time Goes By which I found dissapointing but have now come to gradually appreciate.
Veteran fans may not see much point in getting this CD because a good share of them might own most or all of these songs on their parent albums. For those who've never heard of either Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry, this CD is a great collection for the newbie fanbase. Still though it doesn't do either Ferry or Roxy a lot of justice.
I give this CD a five anyway because it's jam packed with just plain great music.
A nice Ferry/Roxy collection.......2002-07-24
This CD is a great selection of singles from both Roxy Music & Bryan Ferry packed onto one incredible CD. My favorite songs are Avalon, I Put A Spell On You, Slave To Love, Windswept, & Oh Yeah.
Only one problem with this CD is that it doesn't include any songs off the 1994 masterpiece Mamouna. It would have been great if they could have squeezed Your Painted Smile onto here. This CD would,ve been perfect if that had been included.
Apart from the lack of any songs off that album I still would recommend this collection but ultimately getting all of Roxys and Ferrys albums are the best bet.
Good, but strangely lacking.......2001-02-13
I really do like this recording as a reminder of just how trancedentally cool Roxy Music was and how really beautiful the songs were. I am incredibly disappointed that Do The Strand was left off- that strange danceable chaos is one of my favorite early 70's songs. On the good side, Oh Yeah and More Than This are just too cool. Great lyrics and great performances by Ferry.
