5 out of 5 stars Moodier and Marvelous.......2006-06-27

Alabama 3 (or, if you want to avoid a lawsuit, A3), is the perfect band for people who like the idea of country, but not necessarily the sound. While their first album, Exile on Coldharbour Lane, was a crafty and humourous mix of genres (you've got everything from gospel to blues to house to, yes, country), this album tones things down quite a bit, and adds shadows to A3's usually bright tones.

In most cases, those shadows highten the edge of the lyrics and the music, especially on the first three tracks: "Too Sick to Pray," "Mansion on the Hill," and "Sad-Eyed Lady of Lowlife." Their special acidic blend of country includes just a dash of gleefully grim hip-hop, and in spite of the gloomy vocals, these songs get the blood pumping.

"Cocaine (Killed My Community)" is the closest the band comes to the driving pulse of straight-up electronica (the mural of sounds that make up the backdrop to this song incorporate the noises that typically accompany drug use, specifically cocaine), and it is also one of the few moments on this album where the group's ambiguous (and satirical?) spirituality jumps into the foreground (a line from the chorus says that they "live in the light of the Lord"). "Walking In My Sleep" is also a heavily digital melody with some deliciously creepy lyrics and a thrum-thick bass line.

Some of the band's lighter and lankier side (the side revealed most acutely in the previous album) shows up in the final track, "Sinking," which is a story-song that borrows heavily from Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The final minutes of this tune are bright and rich and always put a smile on my face.

This otherwise wonderful and brilliant album isn't without its flaws, however. Their cover of "Hotel California" is both unnecessary and rather grating. Likewise, the dark gloom and precise harmonies that energize the rest of the record seem strained and abused in the over-emotive track, "Thrills."

In spite of these small imperfections, this is still a highly creative bit of work. Moodier than some may like, but no less well-played, and notable, if for nothing else, then for its inventive, inspired, and creative blend of humour, energy, and plain, old-fashioned musical skill.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss out on this one...... .......2006-02-24

This is an excellent CD, I love Larry Love's black velvet voice! My favorites are Sad Eyed Lady, Wade into the Water, Hotel California and Cocaine Killed My Community, but all the cuts are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars La Peste rocks.......2006-01-17

Alabama 3 are one of the best bands around , they rock , great lyrics , sense of humour , and you could even dance to it should you be so inclined .

4 out of 5 stars How the light gets in.......2005-07-15

It must be hard to figure out whether or not you really want to buy this album. There are no 30 second clips here, no overarching hit songs. The mood of "La Peste" is definitely darker, as some have pointed out, but I think "poignant" is a more apt adjective. There is yearning, longing, and sorrow with a tinge of hope creeping through every now and then. I think of Leonard Cohen's song, "Anthem", when Cohen sings, "There are cracks, cracks in everything/ That's how the light gets in."

Favorite tracks: "Too Sick to Pray," "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlife," and "Wade into the Water." The stand-out track on this album (the way "Woke Up This Morning" was the standout track on "Exile in Coldharbour Lane") would have to be "Mansion on the Hill."

If you have access to iTunes, you will be able to hear the clips there. For some reason, the cover of "Hotel California" is not available through iTunes, so if you realize that you must add "La Peste" to your music collection, buy the physical album.

I just received A3's new album, "Outlaw." It is available in the UK but not yet here in the States. I am enjoying it quite a bit, especially the songs "Honey in the Rock" (many of the words taken directly from the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, in a rather humorous way), "Hello... I'm Johnny Cash," and "Keep Your Shades On!"

Yes, I'm a fan.

3 out of 5 stars Lost their way?.......2004-11-18

This CD is not the best way to get into this unique band. Although it offers a remix of their classic "Woke-up This Morning" and a killer track in "Too Sick to Pray" the remainder doesn't have the drive and energy of their first album.

There are few killer hooks to the songs (and where they do exist the bass is far to low in the mix to catch your ear). Overall the album sets a mood rather than grabbing your attention and leaving you brainwashed and addicted.

Do NOT buy this as your introdution to the band. Go for "Exile on Coldharbour Lane" and the UK release if you can get it since the US edits out much of the brilliant "Mao Tse Tung Said". Are you guys still that terrified of commies in the woodpile?

La Peste's sound is very average compared to other bands that came out in the late 70's-early 80's. Their single "Better Off Dead"is the best track here period. The other songs are disappointing and boring.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!!.......2003-04-25

If you don't know this guy, you really have to buy the cd, or you can download some songs on the internet ... but you really have to listen to him! His songs are funny and just like other hiphop songs, about money and girls. The only difference is that he raps in French. Most of you won't understand what he says, but the songs are good to listen, even if you can't understand French.
My favorite song is number 7 :J'irai cracher sur vos tombes.
So, buy this album, or whatever, but you have to listen to him!

5 out of 5 stars Worthy Document of Legendary Boston Punkers.......2000-08-23

People think of Mission of Burma, Big Star, etc., as obscure and legendary bands. What, then, of LaPeste, a band of comparable caliber with perhaps one-hundredth the notoriety? In their heyday ('77-'79) in Boston, you could drop their name into the same sentence as the Ramones, the Clash, and the Buzzcocks, and no one would bat an eyelash. They had it all: amazing stage presence, a repertoire of forty semi-catchy pop-punk songs with larger-than-life lyrics, a rip-your-skull-off attack led by blistering drumming from the late Roger Tripp. Above all, they had smarts, style, and ambition -- an American punk version of the Who. They released one 45 but couldn't land a major label deal; when singer / guitarist Peter Dayton left to go solo, the magic left, too.

This album includes the 45 and a handful of half-successful studio tracks, but the bulk of it is drawn from their runner-up performance at WBCN's very first Rock 'n' Roll Rumble (battle of the bands) at the Rat in July of '79. Unfortunately, only the second of their two sets was recorded, and audio problems wiped out their opening number / theme song "Pop Rock Polls." But what was captured on tape is pretty amazing. If you don't jump out of your seat when Dayton blasts into the opening riff of "Don't Wanna Die in My Sleep Tonite," with its squealing, clanging harmonics, you may be dead yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Original Vintage Boston Punk.......2000-05-28

These guys are THE Original - true, gritty, authentic. Raw and alive energy. Boston Punk era live recordings from WBCN and studio recordings that don't mess with the reality of this cd. Never before released great songs - a must for the punk/new wave enthusiast. If you missed 'em in 1979, you can hear 'em now as if you were there. Green Day are a mere shadow of what these guys were FOR REAL!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Punk Rock n Roll band of all time!.......1999-03-23

I would recommend this albumn to all those who love rock n roll. Spin the LP until you are blue in the face cos it doesn't get much better than this. Raw and amazing songs styripped down to the bearest essentials with hooky solos and lyrics that are witty and sophisticated. Also check out The Stitches from Orange County, California they cover the song "better off dead", a definite crowd pleaser. So if you like punk and new wave, circa 1977-82 then you will love this. The albumn consists of live tracks and some studio tracks recorded on and around the 4th of July 1979. I don't know anything else about the band. I can't find anything about them anywhere, a real mystery, but this band is great and these tracks are here for the taking so don't miss out, you can't go wrong with La Peste

      Album Description

Between 1978 and 1982, the Boston music scene was thriving with great punk and new wave bands -- many of which have become legendary. The club scene was hot, and the indie music scene had great support from college and commercial radio. There were loads of great demos, singles and albums cut by these bands, but not all of the recordings ever saw the light of day.

These particular recordings were considered to be a demo, and eventually La Peste disbanded without releasing any of these great songs. As luck would have it, these recordings have all of the real power and energy of the live band. Even with the weird 24-year time-warp delay in their release, they're fun, great vintage Boston punk.
