After the self-released Somedays and Twentythree Places, Nashville's Matt Wertz signed up with a proper label for Everything in Between. On his third full-length, the Missouri-bred troubadour mixes pop, folk, and blues into an easygoing, yet ebullient sound. As he exults on "The Way I Feel," "Everything inside of me is singin' out." You can hear Dave Matthews, John Mayer, and if you listen really closely, even Michael Jackson, circa Off the Wall, in Wertz's soulful voice (see "Naturally" for proof). Not too surprisingly, Wertz claims all three as influences, along with James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, and Hall & Oates. Interestingly, he also cites the seriously un-cool Doobie Brothers and Toto, but the lack of pretension is refreshing. Aside from "The Way I Feel," the propulsive "Heartbreaker," which evokes the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love," is another catchy tune that deserves a lot of airplay. The other selections may be less memorable, but there are no real clunkers. Matt Wertz doesn't have the most original sound and he seems to be rather risk-averse at this point in his career, but the singer/songwriter has an appealing style. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

amazing.......2007-05-14
This is an amazing album. Matt Wertz comes through as always. Great quality product as well. My favorite songs include 5:19, Carolina, and I will not take my love away. It's an album anyone should own.
My new favorite.......2007-04-07
Ever since my roommate went to a Matt Wertz concert and made me listen to this CD, I've been hooked. Now I've seen him perform twice and I listen to these songs over and over all the time. My favorites are "5:19," - who hasn't been waiting for a phone call? - and "Carolina," but "The Way I Feel" and "Heartbreaker" are really fun, too, and... well... I love them all! Get this CD and give Matt a chance - and definitely catch one of his shows if he comes to town.
fabulous!.......2007-04-04
It is rare to listen to a new cd for the first time and immediately love every single song! Matt is as refreshing as they come. It's evident he puts his heart and soul into writing his music and we're treated to a beautifully honest performance in the end.
Some Really Great Tunes.......2007-03-21
Matt has a great voice, and some real good tunes. I love Carolina and Heartbreaker. 5:19 is a song that everyone with half a heart will be able to identify with...good things to come from Matt!!!

Excellent.......2005-01-08
This album is absolutely wonderful. All of the tracks are good. The music is rich and powerful. The songs sound complex enough to be interesting and draw you in without sounding like it is just "rambling". It is definately a worthwhile purchase.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-12-14
"The Undershore" is Catherine Marie Charlton's fourth album to date, and I think it's her best. The music is complex enough to be interesting with frequent playings at full attention, and soothing enough to be a very pleasant backdrop for other activities. Most of the compositions are solo piano, but several feature Nikkos on flute and/or J. Jody Janetta on percussion. Some of the music is dark and mysterious, and some is lighter and more joyful. Charlton includes her haunting arrangement of "Shenandoah," a piece that she has loved since childhood. A passionate pianist with classical roots as well as a background in jazz improvisation, Charlton's is a strong musical voice. Nikkos' flute blends with and complements the piano beautifully - a compelling duo.
The title track opens the album - a gorgeous piano solo full of emotion and a big, full sound. "The Lonely Cobbler" is about someone so lost in his work that he forgets about friends offering help. Also a solo, it is a very passionate piece with tricky rhythms and a somewhat melancholy mood. "Moon Twist" begins quietly and includes subtle percussion. Deep and mysterious, the middle section transforms into more of a swirling dance, and then trails off at the end. "Ocean's Lullaby" is tranquility, with piano, flute and water sounds - pure peace! "River Dawn" is a 4 1/2 minute version of the 60-minute composition that was Charlton's previous release a couple of years ago. "The Asymptote" is one of the math-inspired pieces that Charlton wrote in college. It refers to a line in math that can be approached, but never reached. On the abstract side, it has a wonderful, sparkling energy. "Edge of Light" is a gorgeous piano and flute duet. Free, and yet structured, I love this one! "Springshine" is a jazzy, upbeat ensemble piece with all three musicians. Light and effervescent, this is joy set to music. The CD closes with "Undershore Flow," an ensemble version of the opening track.
"The Undershore" is a great choice for those who want more complexity and depth to their piano music. Recommended!

letter from the song writer.......2003-09-16
Hey guys!
well, yes with any change some will be happy and some will not. Such is the change with this record! Michelle and i will not be writing any longer... sorry, thats just the way it is... it was a nice time and while i enjoyed the rewriting the wrongs album very much i am personaly most happy with nevada bachelors/and new dear john letters material. (just look i gave it 5 stars :-)
Fact is.. it is more who i am. and while i had fun in making rewriting the wrongs... it was a moment in time, a rather sad moment really. and while people do enjoy them moments... they can purchase it now forever on cd ... :-)
but honestly it is the abstract lyrics, and upbeat pop that i personally write and one MUST be true to themselves first and foremost in writing songs, to me that is a must! SO here is the real me... and there is MUCH more coming from where that came from!!!!
ALSO The good news is... while this record is more like the bachelors stuff, is has charted much higher on CMJ then ANY record i have ever been on... up to #34 on the charts nationwide! It is also selling very well... So I am personally very happy with the new direction. It also has had MUCH better reviews then any record i have ever been a part of... so things are rolling along very nicely.
I hope you take the time to give it an ear!!!
thanks for stopping by!
Liked Rewriting the Wrongs best so far...........2003-09-11
I have been a fan since the days of the Bachelors, but somehow it always fell short for me. I was introduced to The Dear john Letters by my Gal. I fell in love with Rewriting the Wrongs. (still in my top ten of all time favorite local records.) All I can say about Stories is that I miss the writing team of Rob Benson and poet/lyricist Michelle Price
I noticed he used another name on this record in the writing credits, I thought maybe it was a pseudonym for Benson? (It had the same nonsensical lyricism as Benson is known for) Aside from the repeat of the beautiful co-written songs of Unbroken, this could have very well been a Nevada Bachelor's record. Good but not steller. I for one am hoping to hear more from the Benson-Price team and DJL in the future!!
McCartney can retire.......2003-08-04
With Beattlesesqe vocals and a jumping rythym section, sir Paul can retire. Its time! Lead singer Robb Benson has hit his stide with this third release with the Dear John Letters. No longer the sad sappy lyrics of the highschool journal keeper variety, Benson has returned to the helm to pilot this well balanced record. Charged with rock pop gems and littered with sweet sad moments, you travel to real places; "the creation myth" co-penned by Seattle sweetheart Amanda Mae relates the age old story of catharsis in freeing what you wish to hold close. I got this record hot off the press because i could not wait! Go see this band or even an intimate solo show, thank you Robb for doing what you do best.
the NEW best of the NorthWest... fantastic pop from Seattle.......2003-08-04
This cd is by far thier best! Take it from a huge fan of
Guided by voices, Wilco, Ben Kweller, and Spoon...
for Indie pop this record flows so well.
It kinda has a beatles feel, but it's raw and gritty
like todays indie pop. Also the art work is just plain RAD!
I sure hope these guys come back to Bellingham soon!
Otherwise i may have to take a trip to back to Seattle
soon to see them in their home town.

Wow! This is a good CD........2006-02-20
I love this CD. Its full of energy and beat. Great lyrics and vocals with harmonies that bring it.
I love the fast beat in "Everything In Between" (the song.) I like the delivery...angry with attitude.
"Space and Time" should be featured in a movie "And let you dream it/Halfway to Believing/The effort of a thousand tries/Comes alive..." This is a tight CD, Alt. Rock/metal/punk whatever its really just their own sound. And it sounds good.
AWESOME.......2005-10-21
This album is just that.... awesome. The music is deep and complex and keeps you coming back for more. I've never seen these guys live but if their CD is this good they must be great on stage.
TNO Rocks!.......2005-09-16
These guys rock. I have seen them several times in the FL area and they have blown me away each time. Every track on the cd has meaning.
Amazing!.......2005-09-14
This band is great! Like the previous reviewer said, there is a song for every mood on this CD. I also have followed the band for a long time and it is great that they have a CD out. Do yourself a favor and check them out. You won't regret it.
This band rocks!.......2005-09-14
I have followed this band since they were known as dotfash, and let me tell you, they can rock! I like it that they don't sound like any other band out there, but are still true rock and rollers. Great melodies, guitar riffs and powerful drumming. And there's a song for every mood on this CD. Already looking forward to the next one...

Valo makes me listen.......2000-11-23
The production on this CD is stellar. Vocals are strong and seductive. Lyrics are stirring and make you want more. The overall feel of this CD is you just can't get enough. I would listen to it in my car, or play it for a dinner party. It is very mature listening material. Seasoned musicians make a world of difference for your listening pleasure. It is a definite buy and I would recommend this Valo CD with the confidence that the listener will be pleased.,
