5 out of 5 stars More coffee, warden?.......2007-05-13

If you have time for only one Firesign album before you die, make sure it's this one. A prescient, strangely psychedelic (no drugs involved) dissection of America & life in general that will leave you awake all night wondering about who or what's really in charge of this whole peculiar shebang anyway? But of course all their albums are like that. Must be those Canadian writers. The Firesign Theater is the closest thing America ever had to Monty Python, and we owe them a LOT for holding up an unflinching mirror to our loony culture.

5 out of 5 stars functiional brain required.......2007-03-31

this is possibly the best comedy cd of all time. if one wishes to experience a delightful active mental journey as opposed to a more passive "the guy tells a joke and i listen to it" comedy club performance, this is the correct choice.
if you don't have the adventure gene in your body, you might find the performance to be scattered, difficult to follow, and more weird than funny.
one more thing. don't try to listen to this while driving. you will either miss the good stuff on the cd, or miss something important on the road. it would be a waste either way.

5 out of 5 stars Hubba hubba George, what a suit!.......2006-08-28

Firesign Theater has been dismissed as a 60s relic, but listening to DCTD,HMTP repeatedly made me realize it's about the members' nostalgia for the pop culture of their childhood (the Henry Aldrich radio series, Archie comics, Korean War B-movies, etc.)rather than drugs and hippies. Little wonder that at the end of the second side, George Tirebiter reverts to a child running after an ice cream truck. It's also incredibly funny and compulsively quotable, their best sustained effort.

5 out of 5 stars On a Scale of 1 to 5, This is a 27!.......2006-08-14

Being their third release, and the first three albums being their tightest work, Dwarf is often misunderstood. Disjointed snippets? Not in the slightest! Dwarf is the story of an aging George Leroy Tirebiter sitting in front of the television, flipping through the channels only to find each station is showing a story about different phases of his life (complete with commercials). I'm uncertain if George was about to die and this is how his life flashed before his eyes. Regardless, this fine piece of work is often quoted, including an apartment complex near a freeway in Indianapolis posting a sign stating, "If you lived here, you'd be home now." Some material has dated better than other, but still an album that bears repeated listening in order to "catch" half of the jokes, puns, and one-liners that are woven into the text of the album. Buy this album, it is a requirement of the (aptly named) Department of Redundancy Department.

4 out of 5 stars Everything You Know Is Wrong.......2006-07-15

OK. For the uninitiated, apologies for the arcane Firesign reference in the title. As for Dwarf, this is a fabulous CD. It is funny. It is smart. It is subtle. It is stupid. It is arcane. It is endlessly self-referential. It is nonsense.

Here's the problem with translating Dwarf to 21st century sensibilities: nobody has the time to figure out a 45-minute comedy routine that requires repeated listening. And yes, it requires figuring out.

I love this material, as obviously dated as it is. But if you don't have the patience to go with it, if you're looking for easy laughs, it's probably not for you. If you loved it once and aren't sure if you're going to love it again, you might find it ages as well for you as Pixie Stix. (Gak.) But if you got below the surface the first time, or you're willing to spend time with it now, go for it. Go back and don't crush that dwarf one more time.

And just for the record, it would've been five stars--if only this weren't a CD. Part of the original joke was the vinyl medium.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

My personal favorite FST album. Although it is necessary to listen to them in chronological order (in particular you must hear "How Can You Be In Two Places At Once" before this one) this one is an absolute must. "Comedy" is simply and inadequate term to describe this.

1 out of 5 stars "Dwarf" is 5 stars - this CD is 0.......2001-12-03

I'm listening to this right now, and I have to say that I'm sorry I didn't wait for the Sony reissue. This is obviously "remastered" from a not-too clean vinyl pressing, with little attempt to disguise the turntable rumble, clicks and pops, and distortion due to wear. Worse, the CD case was shattered when I received it, though Amazon thoughtfully included another broken CD case that combined made a semi-functional case. I've read on the firesign newsgroup that at least one other person received a broken case from another retailer, so I suspect that the fault likes with Evangenline Records.

I just had to turn this off because the distortion was so bad. What a disappointment, and a waste of money. Go with the Sony reissues; they've got to be better than this.

5 out of 5 stars More Science for Morescience High!.......2001-11-28

As per Bruce's review (strange thing: as I was originally listening to this wonderful record, 1970, I was good friends with a guy named Bill Strang), this is a long lost treasure. I sold my Firesign collection in the mid 1970s to help pay for school textbooks. Hooray, finally a college student at age 23!! Anyway, just buy it, light up (you know what I mean), pop it on the turntable, uh, in the drawer, turn out the lights, and be transported. Now where are the rest of their damn albums from '68 through '71?

    5 out of 5 stars Stop calling me Fred....My name's Adolf!.......2001-11-24

Well pass the groat clusters, but be sure to use your entrenching tools! After an altogether too long a hiatus from the shelves, the Firesign classic 'Dwarf' album returns to cd form. I had a friend in the mid 80's who told me that these new fangled cd's are replacing old vinyl, so I had better get me one and toss out my albums. So I did, including my entire Firesign collection. Fifteen years later I have finally gotten 'Dwarf' on cd. It was worth the wait. Within the first thirty seconds of Pastor Flash's return to earth, I was in heaven. A classic returns! Vive le George Tirebiter!

5 out of 5 stars phenominal if you can stand the slow tempo and English.......2000-04-07

Opinion is very sharply divided on Reginald Goodall's Wagner conducting, people either find it revelatory or insufferable. I personally found it very difficult to listen with sustained attention to his complete Ring, but it was worth the effort. This issue presents only the last two scenes of Act III of Twilight of the Gods, but still takes a full hour under Goodall's direction. It is a studio performance and has fewer lapses in intonation than his live recording of the complete opera. The singing is excellent; Rita Hunter has a classic Brunnhilde voice and the rest of the cast is very strong too, although they require prodigious breath control to match Goodall's tempo. The orchestral playing is beautiful and many details in the woodwind, which often get buried elsewhere, are clearly heard. The finale, although again very slow, has crushing power. I first heard this recording on the Unicorn-Kanchana label, both on record and on cassette, and thought it had some of the best sound engineering ever for this music, it really is quite enthralling. For those who object to the translation of the original text into English, I would say that Wagner himself authorized the Ring to be performed on tour after the 1876 Bayreuth Festival (by Angelo Neimann as I recall) and the translation was approved if it meant the difference between getting his music performed or not. Andrew Porter's translation comes as close to the German text as possible in rhythm and word meaning; it does lack some poetic subtleties. The singers enunciate the English text well and for a change it is nice to hear and understand everything that is sung without a libretto. The documentation is very good too. Overall, this is a fine release, although it may not appeal to everyone.

Wendy Bucklew is one of those rare female artists who can mix emotional subtlety with straightforward honesty and create a listening experience that is both comforting and bracing in turns...

Wendy's songs are complex, diverse and often compelling.... describing a compassionate but uncompromising engagement with life's relational vignettes and sagas.....

she also displays her acoustic guitar chops on several songs, most notably on the final cut, the instumental "Different Everytime," which is turning out to be one of my favorite songs on this album--puts me in the mind of Dick Rossmini, a 12-string acoustic virtuoso of yore.....

if people are still selling this disc for around a buck (or less), it not only is a shame, it's an absolute steal, and no way you should pass it up....

I'm sure that you will find that one--or several--of the songs on this disc will turn out to be worth that much (and more!) to you.....stone guarantee!

      trust me on this one........

      5 out of 5 stars Long-time favorite.......2001-06-16

I've been a fan of Wendy's for many years. I lived in Atlanta and discovered her wonderful voice by accident and instantly feel in love with her sound. I regularly check to see if she has a new album since I know it will be wonderful. Now that I've moved, I hope she will travel to Boulder, CO so I can hear her again in person.

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible Voice.......2000-04-28

Wendy's voice is literally amazing. I hit the repeat button like 20 times on "I know the feeling". This is my personal favorite cd by her, but they're all great!

5 out of 5 stars This one lives under my skin.......2000-02-18

I love this disc. Wendy Bucklew's winning voice drips soul, and her song writing gets straight to the truth. I can't stop listening to "Road Trip", and "Ode to Over" is another killer track. Wendy, please come to Rochester!

      5 out of 5 stars Great music.......1999-01-09

Wendy's music and talent always stir up a lot of emotion for me. Look for a re-release of Rage in the Ring from her soon. I'm one of her loyal followers here in Atlanta and want to tell you all if you listen to anything of hers and like it, you'll like all of it.
