The Wallflowers' third album isn't so much a breach birth as it is past-due. But Jakob Dylan claimed he needed the four years off to come to terms with whether or not he could plumb his own life for material. It appears he can, because here the songwriter tears the veil off his complicated relationship with his famous father and uses it as a vehicle to express some of the same moments of self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy that we all experience, even if we aren't related to Bob Dylan. This newfound candor in the formerly abstruse singer makes for a much more authentic, emotionally affective record, whether he's wearing his neuroses on his sleeve or reinventing old slave spirituals in "Mourning Train." And even if you don't believe that the Dylan paterfamilias ever castigated his son like "Hand Me Down" infers ("Now look at you / With your worn out shoes / Living proof evolution is through"), it makes for compelling listening, made even more persuasive by the Wallflowers' sparse, muscular playing, which evokes the specter of those titans of classic rock: Jackson Browne, the Eagles, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. --Jaan Uhelszki --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

This is where they're reaching the pinnacle.......2007-07-12
I liked the Wallflowers from the beginning, but "Breach" is where you start to see the lyrics become personal. Jakob Dylan's reached down deep and come up with some winners. "Murder 101", and "Some Flowers Bloom Dead" are two favorites--right now. I cannot consistently say there's just one song on any Wallflowers CD. Their music is consistently good and interesting even when it's not the most recent.
Great Album.......2006-02-13
This is a super album to hang out with friends and listen over a drink.
My Favorite Wallflowers CD.......2005-08-03
I like this one better than Bringing Down the Horse because it has some of my favorite songs on it. Jakob Dylan grows on each record and his lyrics keep getting better and better. Favorites include Letters from the Wasteland, Sleepwalker, I've Been Delivered, Some Flowers Bloom Dead, and Murder 101. This record sounds so good and is going to become a classic like BDTH. Highly Recommended.
Well worth the wait.......2005-07-21
From the very first track you are drawn into this expansive and well compiled album from The Wallflowers. Each component of the band is well blended to form a unified sound and is complimented by the powerful lyrics. Quite often artists experience a slight hedge in their productivity as the number of albums they release grows. This is very much the opposite with The Wallflowers as this is a strong release and I would even venture to say their best yet. The song lyrics express their character while their musicianship shows why they are at the top of their game.
More mature Dylan.......2005-05-27
This record is more mature than Bringing Down the Horse, and there are some some wonderful songs on it, but I dont think it measures up to Red Letter Days or Rebel, Sweetheart. A few slow and depressing songs, but otherwise a very good effort. Favorite songs are I've Been Delivered, Some Flowers Bloom Dead, Letters From the Wasteland, and Sleepwalker.

Album Description
Specially priced 5 song EP! Shivaree turned heads all around the globe with their 1999 debut I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head for Making Me Live In This Dump. "Reminiscent of such melancholy clowns as Sparklehorse and Tom Waits," said Spin, while NME claimed singer Ambrosia Parsley "was simply born to be a star." Five years and half a million worldwide album sales later, Shivaree return in January, '05 with the release of the utterly captivating Who's Got Trouble? As an entrée, Ambrosia and company offer Breach. Parsley moonlights writing and singing a sly weekly re-cap of world events for Air America Radio, and this pre-election EP includes two new Shivaree songs in the spirit of the season as well as interpretations of socio-political classics by Brian Eno, John Cale and the Waterboys. Together these three exclusive tracks and two-song Trouble preview provide a fitting, long overdue re-introduction to Shivaree's noir charm and devilish wit.

BACK in the USS....er, USA! So happy you are, boy........2004-11-07
I was hooked after seeing Shivaree live in Annapolis in 2000, following their debut album, "I Oughtta...". Then I was disappointed that their next album, "Rough Dreams", was released only in Europe, although I understand it had great success there, as well as their corresponding tour. So I was very excited to hear Ambrosia's unique voice back on US soil in the most unexpected place: SINGING a hilariously caustic version of the weekly news on Air America Radio! If you haven't heard these incredibly wry and entertaining ditties yet...you MUST! I hope they all come out in a CD collection too -- might actually help me get through my Bush-induced malaise for the next 4 years. But I'm also enjoying this EP immensely, and I'm anticipating the LP in January. But mostly, I'm looking forward to seeing Shivaree again at Ram's Head in Annapolis on November 20. Their live shows are really something -- don't miss them if they come through your town in the coming year.
Shivaree - Breach EP.......2004-11-01
The latest offering from Shivaree is definately worth the five bucks. The first two tracks will be appearing on the upcoming album "Who's Got Trouble?", while the last three are studio recordings of song the band has covered during some of their live shows. I'll be rating each of these sections seperately.
The album songs are as perfect as we're used to. Lead singer Ambrosia Parsley sounds as spectacular as ever. "The Fat Lady of Limbourg" is one of the most intelligent songs I've heard in a long while. You may not like it after the first listening, but after a few more plays through it's true greatness begins to sink in. You'll be hearing it replay in your mind for days after listening to it (if it were possible to go days without it). "I Close My Eyes" is a far more single-ready song. It is instantly catchy, and will have you singing or humming along to it's chorus instantly. The vocals sound oddly spooky during certain parts, "I can make you sorry if I want / Find some other house for you to haunt". These songs are definately worth the price of the whole CD.
The covers, on the other hand, aren't quite as good. "Fear Is a Man's Best Friend" is easliy the best of the lot. It is quiet, catchy, and one of the best cover songs I've ever heard. "Strange Boat" sounds bad. The vocals are too far apart, and way too different. I bought this CD to hear Ambrosia Parsley, not Ed Harcourt. His voice should not be louder than hers to the point where it drowns her out. The lyrics are a bit annoying as well. There are some songs that just shouldn't be covered, this is one of them. "657 Bed B" isnt really a cover (Parsley has writing credits), but it deserves to be grouped with them. For one thing, it sounds extremely out of place. A sad, moaning country song does not belong on an Art Rock album. It does get some points though, Ambrosia does sound truly pained on some of her lines, and she obviously feels very strongly on what the song is about.
It probably won't attract any new fans, but previous ones should be pleased.
Essential.......2004-10-20
An incredible EP from a criminally unappreciated band, at least by Americans. I recently rediscovered the magic of Shivaree after hearing "Goodnight Moon" in "Kill Bill Vol.2", and thinking, "Hey, I think I have this disc". So I pulled out "I Oughtta Give You A Shot..." and have been playing it incessantly. It was quite a pleasant surprise to learn that "Breach" was to be released imminently. And having heard it, I can say that it stands as some of their best work. Two great original songs and three fantastic covers, including a personal favorite, The Waterboys' "Strange Boat", which is beautifully rendered here as a duet with Ed Harcourt. "I Close My Eyes" recalls classic Roxy Music, which seems fitting, considering the amazing cover of Eno's "The Fat Lady of Limbourg". This is a hard band to pin down, as they dabble in pretty much every style imaginable. But Ambrosia Parsley, the lead singer and femme fatale of the group, skillfully leads the band through every twist and turn with remarkable self-assurance. Pure bliss.

The Wallflowers' third album isn't so much a breach birth as it is past due. This newfound candor in the formerly abstruse singer makes for a much more authentic, emotionally affective record, whether he's wearing his neuroses on his sleeve or reinventing old slave spirituals in "Mourning Train." And even if you don't believe that the Dylan paterfamilias ever castigated his son like "Hand Me Down," infers ("Now look at you / With your worn out shoes / Living proof evolution is through"), it makes for compelling listening, made even more persuasive by the Wallflowers' sparse, muscular playing, which evokes the specter of those titans of classic rock: Jackson Browne, the Eagles, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Album from a Talented Band.......2001-08-17
I have to confess that I bought "Breach" after I read some interviews with Jakob Dylan and was impressed by how articulate and down to earth he seemed (I bought "Bringing Down the Horse" after I bought this album). I am a huge Bob Dylan fan but have tried my hardest to not let that influence my opinion of his youngest son's band. And it wasn't hard at all. Jakob Dylan is not his father and shouldn't be as harshly compared as he is sometimes; after all, NO ONE writes like Bob Dylan. His son, however, has proven himself to be pretty darn talented in his own right. Jakob's skill as a songwriter is amazing; he lyrics are solid and intelligent all throughout this album, and besides that, the Wallflowers are a genuinely talented band. Their instrumentals are first-rate and fit perfectly with Jakob's smooth voice. Favorite tracks here are "Letters From the Wasteland," "Hand Me Down," "Sleepwalker," and "Birdcage." All of the songs seem to be deeply personal, and there isn't one on here I don't like. This is an album from a group who worked hard to get where they are today, and the result is a refreshingly candid work from a genuinely talented singer-songwriter and his band. If you like good music, buy "Breach." It has a key place in my CD collection, an honor considering that I am a huge "Classic Rock" fan and The Wallflowers are one of the only modern bands I like. This is an album that would make Bob proud. Way to go Jakob, Rami, Gregg, Michael and Mario! You guys rock!
Now THIS is some music here!.......2001-05-15
At first listen, Breach doesn't sound as good as Bringing Down the Horse. Breach is much more introspective, so therefore it may not have as much mass appeal. However, give it a few more spins, and soon you won't want to take it out of your CD player! Breach is actually a better, more consistent album than BDTH. All the tracks are excellent, from the hard-rocking Letters From the Wasteland to the beautiful hidden track Babybird. The smart, melodic folk-rock is perfect for every mood. The lyrics are deep and poetic, although it takes a few listens to fully grasp Dylan's shades of meaning. He has also grown as a singer since 1996, showing off a range and expression that I didn't know he possessed. With all that in place, Jakob Dylan once again proves that he is perfectly capable of stepping out of his father's immense shadow (in my opinion, he is just as talented--his singing voice is much better, at any rate). The question is whether or not this top-notch collection will find an audience in the era of TRL.
So if you are sick of the boy bands and Britneys, buy this album! Breach is the work of a singer-songwriter and a talented band, as opposed to a lip-synching teen idol working on automatic pilot. It is the perfect antidote to the materialistic and shallow landscape that defines the majority of today's pop music. It's just a shame that the public wasn't more receptive to it.
Whassupppppp.......2000-12-29
I really do not understand these reviews. How can this record be considered stellar? HA! What a joke. The production is way too polished, the songs are simply dull. The hidden track is really the only decent track on the cd. I guess they are just trying to make some spending money (i would imagine it will sell millions...probably even win a grammy!) and sacrifice the creativity. I heard their first album and thought it was great....the second one was better.....and now this! C'mon guys! Jacob needs a little tutoring from his pop. This record, coming from a band with potential, simply sucks.
not bad.......2000-12-22
its a shame this album isnt doing too well and it probably will be considered a perfect example of a sophomore slump. sleep walker went nowhere, and the album has dropped off the top 100 in about only 7 weeks. this album does have some strong points. a main issue from the wallflowers is to create something thats not bland. on some of their cd's they fail to make anything different and it all sounds the same. with this one, they have some variety, but its alot like the other one. just great pop/rock music. i dont see a bright future for them, and thats a shame. the wallflowers are a great band, and you should probably check this album out.
kingsummers is blown away.......2000-12-12
**Breach** is simply incredible. The CD has hits from beginning to end and it stays true to the Wallflowers sound. This is definitely a must have, it's impossible to take it out of your cd player. i just saw them in concert 12.09.00 and they sounded unbelievable. Hurry and grab this cd,it's destined to be a classic, once again Jakob opens his heart and soul to the listener and absolutely blows you away. The boys are back after a long 4 years. don't wait any longer, your really missing out.
